Comments about Vivitar DR-5000 Digital Macro Ring Flash:

Since I only shoot macro occasionally, I didn't want to spend big on a dedicated ringflash with TTL exposure. This unit does the job at a very low price. On manual mode, you get a full power flash each time, so your exposure will vary with the distance from the flash to your subject. Here are the important numbers that are not included in the owner's manual ... using my full-frame Nikon d600 with a 105mm macro lens, focusing at 1:2 (one-half life-size) I get f16 at ISO 100. Of course you can get a higher number by increasing your ISO. You cannot vary the output manually (no 1/2, 1/4,etc.) It's full power all the time. The auto mode is useless, as are the included instructions. The quality of the light seems every bit as good as the higher priced, dedicated units. It comes with adapters to fit my 52mm filter Nikon 105, as well as my 67mm filter Zeiss 50.It fits securely and handles well handheld. You can't go wrong!

Comments about Vivitar DR-5000 Digital Macro Ring Flash:

Good bare-bones option for macro photography. I use it on an Olympus OM-D with a 60 mm macro lens. It does the job provided you're willing to experiment a bit with manual camera settings and are not expecting anything fancy.

There are only two light output settings on the flash: a full-power 'manual' setting and an attenuated 'auto' setting. Auto seems to be adequate for outdoor daylight macro work with a minimum of fussing with the camera settings if you just want a touch of fill. Indoors, auto is a touch underpowered in very low light, but in well lit rooms might be okay. The flash doesn't seem to vary the output in this setting as far as I can tell though, there's just one intensity available in auto. Manual setting delivers an awfully big blast of light for macro but can be made to work indoors if the shutter speed is sufficiently fast and the lens is stopped down considerably. Manual should work okay for portraits too, provided there is sufficient working distance between subject and camera and you're not too fussy about lack of diffusers. Doesn't eat batteries too badly. I'm anxious to try this flash with something like cave photography.

There is no TTL option; this flash requires for your camera to be in manual mode. A 52 mm filter thread (or smaller with a step-up ring) for the lens is ideal; larger filter-size lenses carry the potential in some circumstances to vignette with this flash. There is no option to adjust left and right sides of the flash, and there is no option for continuous light like some other third-party flashes have. Forget it for video. The battery compartment is difficult to get closed once you install the batteries, but this can be worked around. All things considered, this is a cheap but viable option for any make of camera.

I bought the flash for taking dental photos with my OM-D and 12-50 kit lens, and it is great for its price. There is no TTL, and I use it on manual setting: 1/160, F22 gives me perfect results every time - even light, natural colors. Good basic flash.
