The Pegasus J4 2.5" Thunderbolt Hard / Solid State Drive Enclosure (Empty) from Promise Technology is a disk array with four empty 2.5" bays for SATA hard disk (HDD) or solid state (SSD) drives (sold separately).

The array is equipped with two Thunderbolt 10Gb/s interfaces (cables sold separately) and delivers data transfer speeds of up to 480MB/s with 7200rpm HDDs or over 750MB/s with SSDs. It can be set up in a variety of RAID backup configurations, including RAID 0, 1 and JBOD, giving you the flexibility to choose higher data storage capacity or greater data protection.

The system supports daisy chaining up to 6 Thunderbolt-compatible devices. It is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.8, 10.7.4, 10.7.5, 10.8 and 10.8.2. It supports Time Machine in Mac OS X. The enclosure is constructed from durable, lightweight aluminum.

Empty enclosure with four SATA hard disk / solid state drive bays
Connects to a computer via two Thunderbolt 10Gb/s interfaces (cables sold separately). Delivers up to 480MB/s with 7200rpm HDDs or over 750MB/s speeds with SSDs
Choose from a variety of RAID backup configurations, including RAID 0, 1 and JBOD, giving you the flexibility to choose higher data storage capacity or greater data protection. RAID 0 offers no redundancy, so it gives you the least amount of data protection, but offers improved performance and additional storage (100% capacity). RAID 1 creates an exact copy (mirroring without parity or striping) of a set of data on 2 or more disks, for increased protection but reduced capacity and transfer speed. JBOD is Just a Bunch of Disks, offering no redundancy and therefore very little protection. Each disk is accessed directly as an independent drive. It differs from RAID 0 in that it does not truncate the other drives to the size of the smallest disk in the array. The hard drive array supports daisy chaining up to 6 Thunderbolt-compatible devices, meaning you can combine high levels of data protection with high capacity and transfer speeds by configuring 2 daisy chained J4 arrays in a RAID 10 (RAID 1 + RAID 0)
Combine with a Mac mini to create a cost-effective server-storage solution. Benefit from the freedom to add more devices when you require additional storage capacity

Comments about Promise Technology Pegasus J4 2.5" Thunderbolt Hard / Solid State Drive Enclosure (Empty):

I put 4 Samsung 240GB 840 Pro SSDs in this product, connected to an iMac via Thunderbolt, and the speed is beyond what I expected. See the attached photo...typically getting general speeds of over 800MB/sec for reads and writes per Blackmagic Test. Obviously real world usage isn't quite that fast, but it gives you a good idea at just how fast this unit is.

I use the drive as my primary home for photos to work on in Lightroom and Photoshop. The only concern I have is that it's only 1 TB...I will have to purchase more of them as the size of my library grows.

I also have a Pegasus R6 with six SSDs in them, and it clocks at around 700MB a second for reads and writes. The J4 is surprisingly faster. It is also amazingly quiet...you don't even know it's on your desk.

I've only had it for a few weeks, so I can't comment on long-term quality control...but it was very easy to install (just plug and play), and you can control RAID via Mac's Disk Utility. Mine is set up for RAID 0 (striped).

I cannot recommend this product enough. For anyone that needs a drive for frequent access (i.e. a Photographer using Photoshop and Lightroom), this drive is perfect.

Very quiet and does what it's supposed to do.

One downside was that I tried to put a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adaptor in the daisy chain (iMac -> J4 -> Adaptor) and it did not recognize it.

Comments about Promise Technology Pegasus J4 2.5" Thunderbolt Hard / Solid State Drive Enclosure (Empty):

One Thunderbolt enabled OS will not mount the drive. Mac OS computers cannot boot from it. Promise unhelpful, at best, and does not understand how to support the end user. Promise support is really ... unsupportive. I've waited 4 days for a promised "tomorrow" answer about booting.

The enclosure is solid enough; quiet and well built. Impressive case. I like AC cords rather than transformers. A wee bit pricy.

Wait for a flash upgrade unless Promise drops the drive before. Then you'll be happy you waited, either way.

Comments about Promise Technology Pegasus J4 2.5" Thunderbolt Hard / Solid State Drive Enclosure (Empty):

Very fast and quiet and it looks good too.

The device is exactly what I wanted. As with all raid devices one only knows how good it is after a few years of use - so far could not be more impressed with its performance.

The only reasons for 4 stars rather than 5 is no thunderbolt cable and a tricky installation. That said I did use Monentus 750 XT drives not on the compatibility list (check this out before buying drives) and I have raid 10 running. The drives were not recognised before I updated the software online.

Comments about Promise Technology Pegasus J4 2.5" Thunderbolt Hard / Solid State Drive Enclosure (Empty):

Things i really like about the J4:

              built-in power supply 100-240v
well built, much better than the photos online indicate
fast performance, can achieve 230mb/sec (AJA) with 2x slowish 2TB WD20NPVT as RAID 0
supports 2TB hard drives (14.9mm) with the lid off.
supports 12.5 mm hard drives with the lid on

You can fit one of these with 4x 9.5mm 2.5" 1TB hard drives inside a mac mini bay (with LID off) in the Sonnet RackMacMini rackmount enclosure.

              Things i don't like about the J4:

No 10.6.8 support, even though every other thunderbolt devices supports 10.6.8 this one doesn't!
If it supported 10.6.8, then it would be 5 stars!

Comments about Promise Technology Pegasus J4 2.5" Thunderbolt Hard / Solid State Drive Enclosure (Empty):

Let me start by clarifying that I'm sure I'll be happy with it soon, and I'll soon be able to recommend it to a friend. But as stated below I'm waiting for a replacement unit and to say that I recommend it to a friend while sitting next to a dead unit might show bias which isn't my intent. Read on...

I'm excited about the potential with this storage unit because of the speed and how quiet it is. Considering how difficult it is to upgrade internal storage in a mac mini and how much Apple charges for their internal storage options, I'm looking forward to using this as a fast compliment to my mini's internal storage.

The documentation wasn't very clear whether installing only two drives was a supported configuration, but I tried it with two. I saw impressive throughput with two drives in a RAID0 configuration, and even decent throughput with two drives in a RAID1 config. I then added two more drives and was happy to see 4 drives in a RAID0 config beat my 6G SSD, and was very fast in a RAID10 config. In each of these configurations it didn't seem like the thunderbolt interface was a limiting factor. Very nice indeed.

              A couple of NITs:
First, a cd is included that has the required driver among other things, but I didn't have an optical drive handy. Not a problem as it's available on their website and it's easy to find. But there's reference in the manual to a mgt utility that doesn't seem to be available for download so I'm not sure what I'm missing out on. Maybe I overlooked it somewhere?

Second, I should have known ahead of time, but in order for a mac to recognize the disks and use the J4 you need to load a driver and reboot. That a driver is needed means that you can't boot from the J4 which I found disappointing. I feel like I should have known ahead of time but I missed that.

Lastly, my unit failed entirely which is also a bit disappointing. Now I'm not stressed about it as I contacted Promise, they responded very quickly, and a new unit is on the way so I'm positive I'll be whole in no time at all. I'm also fortunate in that I'm not blowing deadlines for having failed storage. This is my third promise array and in 3+ years of using them daily this is the second time I had to use their customer service. The first time I had a power supply fail just before the warranty ended and Promise replaced it quickly. This failure kind of feels like a power supply, but regardless of the root cause I'm sure it'll be behind me soon.

Lastly, for what it's worth, the drives I chose were not on the HCL (I chose WD caviar blacks) but that wasn't an issue with using the array or working with their support.
