The 21.5" iMac Desktop Computer from Apple is an all-in-one desktop computer with an ultra-slim unibody design. Measuring at just 5mm at its edges, the iMac has 40% less volume than its predecessor. The body of the iMac isn't the only thing that got thinner. The LCD display is now 5mm thinner, and Apple also removed a 2mm gap between the LCD panel and the glass to save even more space.
The 21.5" widescreen display features LED backlighting for vibrant, accurate color. With in-plane switching (IPS) technology, the iMac has a wide 178° viewing angle. The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio and Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution, supported by an nVIDIA GeForce GT 640M graphics card with 512MB discrete GDDR5 memory.
Just because it's thinner doesn't mean the iMac sacrifices performance. The iMac features a quad-core Ivy Bridge 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor. The processor can also be overclocked up to 3.2GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The system also has 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive, 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, a 720p FaceTime HD camera, dual microphones and built-in stereo speakers.
For ports, the iMac has dual Thunderbolt ports (which also double as Mini DisplayPorts) and four USB 3.0 ports. You'll be able to connect with various compatible components. If you would rather go wireless with your peripherals, you can use Bluetooth 4.0 technology where compatible.
Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion comes preinstalled on the iMac. Mountain Lion introduces a host of new features, such as Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Notification Center and more. Mountain Lion seamlessly integrates with your other Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch using iCloud. Just sign into iCloud with your Apple ID and you'll instantly have access to all your settings, files, photos, music and more.
Also included with Mountain Lion is iLife. iLife has a complete suite of digital creativity applications. Easy enough for anyone to use, iLife will help you edit your home movies, organize digital photos, and compose original music. The system is also powerful enough to run Apple's professional-level applications, perfect for those who are ready to move up to the next level of creative software.

Being retired, I wanted a desktop experience that didn't spend a lot of time fiddling with the operating system. I have had iMacs previously, and they have always served me well. The one I was 'retiring' was from 2006, and though it still worked, it was getting extremely slow, and I could not update the OS X past 6.8 because of hardware considerations, so decided to start anew with a brand new iMac and Mountain Lion. I knew from reading the reviews that the optical drive had been eliminated, so included an external Apple super drive (external) in the order. Everything works 'just like it should', and I am extremely happy with my purchase. I am bringing over my previous software applications selectively, and they all have installed without a hitch, sometimes giving me a newer update that I could not take advantage of on the older iMac. The design and display is a 'work of art', and the much increased speed is a pleasure to work with. The bonus software with the purchase was an unexpected addition. These are all 'pros'; I have no 'cons.'

Nice computer for everyday use!
Good for home use, but not so great to run editing software on it.

Comments about Apple 21.5" iMac Desktop Computer:
I love the looks of my beautiful new iMac and its sleek wireless keyboard and mouse. I am still learning about its new features so I cannot yet comment on them. I like the scrolling and zooming capabilities of the mouse. I might miss burning disks (I am an old lady with old audio/video equipment) and I do miss the forward delete button that was on my old keyboard, but not enough to go back to it.
Comments about Apple 21.5" iMac Desktop Computer:
It's an okay computer. Not really worth the price!

Small business home office. Finally made the switch from "that other OS" to Mac. Clean, safe, intuitive and fast. No constant "update" reminders and virus warnings and infections. Very happy. Wasn't happy about having to install an external cd/dvd drive, but we'll live over it.

Photos are downloaded quickly from camera or disk drive.
Cropping and enhancing tools are simple.
They look great on a big screen. Music sounds great too.
All in one monitor does not require a big desk. Not having a word
processor is not a big deal as that can be easily added.

I bought the imac to replace a wintel computer that my kids use. It's sleek, compact and the screen is beautiful.
I got it up and running with minor configuring but more sophisticated configuring takes quite a bit of knowledge for a non-mac user, even for me with years of unix experience.

Comments about Apple 21.5" iMac Desktop Computer:
Very happy with machine so far. Home use for internet, financial software, Office, etc. to replace PowerPC iMac. The wider display is great for multi-tasking. Mountain Lion OS has behaved fine. The weight is 12.5 lbs so easy to move around and deal with. Happy with the wireless keyboard and mouse. Delighted that the mouse can scroll and do other trackpad functionality. Having the display forward right on the glass is nice. Had some trouble with vision and nausea from display but that has gone away now. Am guessing it is because the resolution is much higher than my old machine. Set up in minutes out of the box. Packaged great with three layers of boxes for shipping. Drawback - no internal optical drive (purchased Superdrive separately) - however, went through three faulty drives on earlier iMac, so perhaps better they leave that out, since problematic for Apple.

Love the computer, however, I don't feel like it needs to be thinner, I would rather have more ports in the back for FIrewire and ethernet, and mostly a OPTICAL DRIVE! I know they are on there way out, but there are still here! I still have CD's and DVD's.

Comments about Apple 21.5" iMac Desktop Computer:
I replaced a 9 year old Dell with the new base 21.5" iMac. It boots and runs applications lightning fast; has a crisp, richly colored display and its operating system was very easy to learn and use (for one transitioning from Windows XP). Sound from the internal speakers is really quite good and the anti-glare screen is much easier on the eyes than glossy displays. The wireless keyboard and mouse also have a very good "feel" and were easy to switch to. I also appreciate the array of useful software installed - without the bloatware that came on my old pc.
I had first looked at pcs - but the new Windows 8 system was confusing and awkward to use when I demoed it in the store, especially if you really don't want/need to use a touch screen. I decided to go with Apple instead, and I'm very happy I made the switch.
