The NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/4G ED VR Telephoto Zoom Lens from Nikon strikes an ideal balance between exceptional optics, advanced lens technologies, and a range of popular focal lengths. Designed for full-frame Nikon FX-format cameras, this G-series lens is also compatible with Nikon's cropped DX-format cameras. When attached to a cropped sensor camera, it turns the 70-200mm focal length into the 35mm equivalent of a 105-300mm zoom - with a maximum f/4 aperture throughout the zoom on either FX- or DX-format. Several advanced Nikon technologies combine to provide this lens with exceptional optical quality, and helpful features for low-light shooting, including Vibration Reduction (VR), three Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) Elements, a Silent Wave Motor (SWM), and several optical glass coatings.

Arguably the most helpful of these technologies is its Vibration Reduction technology, which prevents camera shake and allows for handheld shooting in low-light conditions. With this technology, you can shoot at shutter speeds up to five times slower than you otherwise could - producing much sharper photos and HD videos as a result.

When shooting in less than desirable conditions, you need to know that you can count on your shots to be focused quickly, precisely and quietly. Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides all of these, with a quick and seamless manual override as well. This is all done within the lens barrel, thanks to the Internal Focus design of this G-series lens, so that the length of the lens remains constant as you zoom or focus.

Focus as close as 3.3' so you can zoom in on your subjects, big or small, from a comfortable working distance. When you don't want or need autofocus, switch it off with the Manual/Auto (M/A) focusing mode that allows for almost zero lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This means you won't have to move your eyes from the viewfinder in order to switch from quick AF, to refined manual focus.

Going deeper into the lens, we find it has a total of 20 elements in 14 groups, three of them being Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements, as well as anti-reflective Nano Crystal Coat and Super Integrated multilayer Coating. The ED elements provide better sharpness and color correction by minimizing chromatic aberration - even at the widest aperture, and the Nano Crystal Coat prevents internal lens reflections, ghosting, and flare.

With a great telephoto zoom range, 5-stops of vibration reduction, and high quality optics, the NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens provides sharp and clear images in bright sunlight or dim twilight.

DX-Format (35mm Equivalent): 105-300mm
Though it is a full-frame, FX-format lens, the 70-200mm f/4G is compatible with Nikon's cropped DX-format sensors. With a crop factor of 1.5x, DX-format sensor cameras turn the 70-200mm focal length of this lens into the 35mm equivalent of a 105-300mm lens, adding greater telephoto zoom capabilities on the smaller sized sensor.
Aperture Range: f/4.0-32
With a constant maximum aperture of f/4.0 throughout the zoom range, this lens' high quality design means you don't have to sacrifice your aperture in order to shoot higher focal lengths - as some lenses do when zooming in. From 70mm all the way up to 200mm you can use f/4 throughout, along with the shallower depth of field that it brings.
3x Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) Elements
To reduce chromatic aberrations, most noticeable when zoomed all the way in to 200mm, the three extra-low dispersion glass elements correct specific wavelengths of light - providing maximum sharpness and minimum chromatic aberration, even at the widest f/4.0 aperture setting.
Optical Vibration Reduction (VR)
This optical Nikon lens technology improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake, with up to 5 stops of image stabilization. This means you can shoot at shutter speeds up to five times slower than would otherwise be possible, for dramatically sharper handheld photos and HD videos. Lenses such as this that offer vibration reduction even feature the abbreviation "VR" on the lens barrel.
Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which provides AF lens technology that is fast, quiet and precise with seamless manual focus override.
Manual/Auto Focusing Mode (M/A)
The M/A focusing mode allows you to change from automatic to manual focusing immediately by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch from quick autofocusing to fine manual focusing all while looking through the viewfinder.
Anti-Reflective Nano Crystal Coat
This anti-reflective coating reduces internal reflections from the lens elements, across a wide range of wavelengths. The Nano Crystal Coat removes ghosting effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghosting and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally - for greater image clarity and contrast.
Optical Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
In addition to the Nano Crystal Coat, this lens also has a Super Integrated multilayer Coating on its optical groups and lens elements.
Internal Focus Lens Design (IF)
Thanks to the Internal Focus (IF) design of the lens, you can focus automatically or manually without changing the length of the lens. All of the movement of the lens elements takes place within the lens barrel so you can remain at the same working distance throughout the focus range.
Minimum Focus Distance: 3.3'
Focus as close as 3.28 ft. from your subject with a maximum magnification of 1.36X; capture even the smallest subjects while maintaining a comfortable working distance.
9x Circular Aperture Blades
Create beautiful softly blurred backgrounds (bokeh) with a more natural appearance.
Filter Diameter: 67mm
The 67mm from filter thread does not rotate, allowing rotating polarizing filters to be used.

As an amateur photographer making occasional images of friends performing in theatrical settings, I purchased this lens for a game safari trip over the holiday. I searched for a lens that would not be too heavy to carry a long distance, provide adequate focal length from a vehicle, with vibration reduction built in, allow sharp captures in low light (outdoors at dusk and twilight) and be compatible with my D90. After comparing various Nikkor focal lengths for several months against an f/2.8 lower priced third party lens, to my surprise and delight I stumbled across this sturdy, lightweight AF-S 70-200mm f/4 telephoto 15 days before departure. Not only did this lense perform better then expected, but in my small hands the size and weight was as comfortable as shooting with the 18-105mm kit lense and at half the cost of the Nikkor f/2.8 with the same focal length. B&H delivered on time during their busiest holiday season. I returned home with stunning, sharp images that I am proud to share.

I had great hopes for this lens to cut weight for hiking relative to the f/2.8, the greater capability of the VRIII, and the lack of focus breathing at close distances. There is much to like about this lens. It feels great on a D800, and encourages one to pick up and just shoot. The VRIII is quite impressive. An added bonus is that with VRIII on a Nikon V1, it is a spectacular lens (a combination I also tested). Taking closeups is a joy with the lack of focus breathing and close focus. Zoom and focus controls feel quite nice.

But the image quality is distinctly different than that of the 70-200 f/2.8. I did extensive testing, from brick walls (orthogonal and at an angle to measure symmetry), and many distant shots (I mainly do landscapes). I tried two samples from B&H, as well as a rental, after finding some significant sample variations; such variations expressed themselves as asymmetric sharpness in different corners at different zoom lengths. I concluded that on a D800 sensor, 1) the micro-contrast was significantly better with my f/2.8 lens (at equivalent f-stop, of course), and 2) the image quality consistency across the frame and corner-to-corner sharpness and presence was just not a match for the f/2.8. One very surprising handling issue was how difficult it was to focus (LV, manual) the f/4 at long zoom at long distances, relative to the f/2.8, due to the short throw of the focus.

The final thing that convinced me to keep my f/2.8 and not purchase the f/4 lens was the build quality. The f/2.8 lens is built like a tank and I think will last far longer and, critically, stay in alignment better over the years of packing it around in places and bouncing in 4WD vehicles. Yes, my aging back would have loved to choose the f/4, but the quality of images from the f/2.8, across the frame and at all zoom settings is clearly stronger. I have had my f/2.8 in the rain and snow, and never had an issue. I will find something else to omit form my pack to drop the weight.

This is not to say the f/4 is not a great lens - it is clearly superior to the 70-300 VR (which I also have and tested), but the f/4 is not magic and you do get what you pay for. One item of advice for f/4 purchasers - the tripod collar is not really needed (the lens balances just like the 70-300 VR), and, in fact, the balance point is too far forward for anything but a very light DSLR body. The collar would seem to be a very poor balance for a D4/D3X, etc. I was surprised by this.

Unless need f2.8, no need for bigger, heavier lens.

        General purpose lens.

Small and Light compared to the f/2.8 version with similar performance at about $1K less. The one stop difference is easily compensated with an ISO increase. This lens is sharp, focuses fast and handles well.

Not supplied with a tripod collar (shame on Nikon)

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/4G ED VR Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I tried the f/2.8 and just found it too heavy to carry around on a walk-around basis. I switched to this f/4. OMG - lighter, smaller and every bit as sharp as to image quality. You the trade-off is weight vs faster f/2.8. In my mind - not a contest. How often must one go to 2.8 vs always lugging around a lens that weights 2 to 3 times as heavy as this f/4. This is a terrific lens.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/4G ED VR Telephoto Zoom Lens:

My copy had no quality control problems that I could detect. It focused accurately at 100 inches at all focal lengths on a D800 with no autofocus correction. The exception was at 200mm where there was back focus of about 1/4 inch at 100 inches, which is within my personal tolerances. My copy was equally sharp in the center and corners at 30 feet at all focal lengths within my ability to use test charts. The above remarks merely confirm that a copy without defects conforms to the test results one finds on the web. Microcontrast is good by Nikon standards but certainly not up to Zeiss standards. Up to now I've taken few pictures with it due to a month's business travel to Europe within a week of receipt for which I use a D7100 with a 18-200mm Nikon lens. It's not weight and bulk but the risk of theft that deters me from taking the D800 with my complement of lenses: 21mm Zeiss, 35mm Zeiss, 50mm f/1.8 Nikon, and the 70-200 f/4 Nikon under review. The best review of this lens that I have found is Ming Thein's in connection with a photo expedition to Havana. I agree with everything he says.

I'm planning a long-distance hike on which I plan to take a D800E and a 24-120 F/4 VR. I have a 70-200 f/2.8 VRII which I like a lot but it is big and heavy, so I bought the 70-200 f/4.0 VR for the trip. I expected it might not be quite as good as the f/2.8 but would be good enough for the trip and I could sell it afterward. Having received the f/4.0 and tested it for a while now, I'm happy to say it is as sharp, focuses as well, VR works as well as the f/2.8. The f/4 is better about vignetting and it focuses closer than the f/2.8. The only advantages I see to the f/2.8 are the extra stop and the bomb-proof construction. I expect I'll be keeping the f/4.0 after all.

Images are every bit as crisp and clear as any image I've gotten with the f/2.8 version, and this lens is so much lighter than the f/2.8 model, it is actually a pleasure to carry around. It performs like a champ wide open at f/4, regardless of the shooting conditions and/or available light. Auto focus is speedy and sharp.

For the money, this is one of the two finest lenses Nikon currently makes...in a tie with the 200mm f/2.

The lens works great. I had a vr1 2.8. But it's optical quality was a joke once I got a d800. I went back to my 80-200 2,8 and was very happy. I decided to shrink my bag size with this lens and it worked great. Super sharp and the vr is quite good.

Wanted this lens for some time. Superb optics, matching or exceeding the 70-200 f2.8, and it weighs much less. A must have for any serious photographer.

Love the weight of this lens and the results are spectacular as well. Was wary before purchase, but this lens is tack sharp and the difference in weight between this and the 2.8 is substantial. Would absolutely recommend this lens and it's results.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/4G ED VR Telephoto Zoom Lens:

This is a tremendous lens, especially given the price and the size. The main drawback, as others have noted, is the lack of a tripod collar included with the lens. However, the lens makes up for this by being an extremely solid performer at all focal lengths, even at f/4. Colors and sharpness are top notch. The VR implementation is the best I've used so far on a Nikon lens, and noticeably superior to the older technology on the 16-35mm f/4, which I also own.

I also appreciate that the lens stays 200mm even when focusing very close, unlike it's more expensive, older f/2.8 brother.

As a light, sharp, clear lens this quickly became one of my favorites to use with the D800E. It's not necessarily the right lens for the demanding professional photojournalist who needs f/2.8, but for many other uses - including landscape, my primary use - where f/2.8 isn't necessary, it's perfect.

I am putting together a Nikon constant f/4 lens kit. I already have the 24-120mm f/4 which is dynamite! The clarity and fast focus is superb. I added this 70-200mm f/4 and I am so pleased with it. I have a Nikon D610 now, previously a D600 & before a D700. I love FX and this new lens is sensational. It's a 10 on performance and it is light (compared to the 2.8 version) with only 1 stop difference. I absolutely recommend this lens to the serious enthusiast.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/4G ED VR Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I recently took the plunge and upgraded to full frame with the D610. After much study and debate I chose this lens and the 16-35mm f/4 to add to the 35-70mm f/2.8D I already owned. So far, my results from this lens have been everything I had hoped for. The combination of the D610 and this lens produces great pictures. The low light performance of this combination beats my D7000 with a 50mm f/1.4G attached. The sharpness, detail, contrast and color are all excellent. I am very happy with this lens on the D610 and I look forward to taking many more pictures.

Absolutely one of Nikon's best! Sharp at all focal lengths, with brilliant colors. I have had nearly every version of the 80-200 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8, including the most recent VR II version; all are exceptional, but heavy! Shooting with the Nikon Df this lens is perfect, and the need for 2.8 is very, very, rare. The weight is nicely distributed on the Df as well. The build quality is better than I expected. This is wonderful telephoto lens that will not disappoint. Great for travel and landscape work!
