Designed for the Nikon 1 series cameras, the black Nikon 1 SB-N7 Speedlight maintains the camera's compact, well-balanced design, mounting right onto the camera's hot shoe and using Nikon's i-TTL system. With a guide number of 59' at ISO 100, the SB-N7 Speedlight delivers significant lighting power in a small package. Use it as a fill flash to highlight the subtle details of well-lit subjects, even from a distance, or power through a heavily backlit portrait with ease.

The flash head tilts 120° so you can direct the light exactly where you want it: whether that is straight ahead, straight up, backward, or anywhere in-between. It features a coverage angle of 10mm with CX-format cameras and it comes with a wide-flash adapter panel to uniformly spread the flash for use with wide 6.7mm lenses.

When you need more light in a dimly lit interior, or need to fill in the shadows of a backlit portrait, the SB-N7 provides the power and versatility you need for your Nikon 1 series mirrorless camera. It features slow, first and second curtain sync modes for more creative lighting effects. The unit also runs on just 2 AAA batteries with a recycle time of 3.5-30 seconds and comes with a soft case.

I knew going in that this flash did not swivel...if you do your research before buying you will notice that there is no mention of this swivelling and many sites said it did not swivel...and there are ways to work around this...but back to this flash...incredible amount of power...I was bouncing the flash inside a gothic cathedral with good results . I had borrowed a sb-n5 and for me it was underpowered and I did not like the fact that it drew its power from the camera battery...In the Sb-N7 it uses 2 AAA batteries...adds to the weight though and the size of the flash is considerably larger than the sb-N5...Most of the portraits I shoot are horizontal...so the fact that this does not swivel is not a factor to me...I like it...plus you can have it set to TTL or manual

I use this flash on a V1 when I'm not inclined to lug my D800 setup. The unit works as it should, giving good, balanced fill-flash results. The GN is adequate for most situations where a monster flash is not needed. The head tilts to allow bounce lighting, however it does NOT rotate, making bounce lighting (from the ceiling, anyway) impossible when the camera is rotated to portrait position. This is its most serious limitation. There is only an on/off switch on it, so you cannot select the other flash modes supported by most of Nikon's larger speedlights. I don't find this very limiting because I don't use the camera for "serious" photography. All in all, this flash unit puts out enough power and produces well-illuminated subjects under most conditions. If you're looking for an SB-910 replacement, this isn't it.

Only if you are using up close

    By Molly

Comments about 1 SB-N7 Speedlight (Black):

I needed a flash to go with my Nikon 1 for a last minute trip I was taking. It works good in close quarters/when shooting subjects up close. It is not powerful by any means and it has two modes, on and off, you can not control it otherwise. Unfortunately it also does not swivel horizontally, so be aware before you purchase.

Well i knew going in that this had no great features. It does a good job TTL. It has no CLS! to trigger other flash must use in Manual mode and set other flashes on SU4 mode or use Studio flash with slaves. I use it for general TTl and sometimes as a Slave trigger.

Probably the best accesory you can get for the 1v2. The in camera flash is only useful for fill in or close portraits. This external flash adds a lot of flexibility and is more than adequately powerful for essentially any task. My biggest compliment is how it manages spot on exposures every time. The price is also very affordable. Simply cant say enouuh good things about this simple, powerful and affordable strobe. Personally I would I wouldnt mind touse for indoor photograhy all time!

I was happy to add this to my 1 Nikkor inventory because the SB-N5 was underpowered. This flash has become the primary flash, with the SB-N5 strictly in a backup role. I do wish the 1 Nikon System used the standard flash hotshoe so that the "grownup" Speedlights could be used.

I purchased the SB-N7 so I could use my Nikon V1 in all light situations. It is small enough to keep in my camera bag when not in use. I like the versatility changing the modes of the flash and the ability to bounce the light. It is far better than any built in flash found on most cameras of this size.

What this flash lacks from my other flashes on my SLR is the ability to rotate the head or use a cable to move the flash off the camera .

I am using this flash as an additional accessory to illuminate the subject since there is no built-in flash on the Nikon 1 V1. I can't say more how powerful this little guy is when I tried all the power levels that can be adjusted from the camera. The only thing I didn't like with it which I'm sure every pro photographer has seen is the tilting ability sidewards as this thing can only be tilted to front and backwards. What about taking a portrait shot?! You know what I mean Nikon!

Comments about 1 SB-N7 Speedlight (Black):

I am very pleased with the quality of the illumination from my new N7 Flash.
The unit is very small and light. I use the Energizer lithium AAA batteries. I get fairly fast recycle and the lithium batteries keep the weight to a minimum.
It does have power limitations and it can only swivel for horizontal photos but that is a reflection of it's size and weight. More power and features would add size and weight and that is not what the Nikon 1 system is about.
I have a Nikon D90 with the 18-200 mm lens. It's a great camera but not something I want to carry all day at Disney or when I'm traveling light.
I got the V1 because I wanted something small with excellent image quality and features beyond a point and shoot.

I am not usually one to rant or write reviews, however this product's design flaw needs to be shared for other potential buyers. I have a Nikon 1 V1 and I love it for what it is. A great compact camera that gives me some of the benefits of my two D700s without all of the weight and space of them plus the pro lenses I use with them. I love the size of the V1 when carrying all the stuff with our new child. I have the SB-N5 and I like it too for it's small size and ability to minimize red eye due to being off enough of the lens axis. However, my biggest gripe has been the lack of power, especially when trying to bounce flash. So I was very interested in the SB-N7 so I could have that extra punch for those nice bounce flash shots as well as outdoor daylight shots. I preordered over a month ago and eagerly awaited trying it out tonight when the package arrived.

After opening the package I was playing around with the flash and was getting ready to try it when I saw something was amiss. I was like wait a minute....maybe I just don't know how to do it. I pushed, pulled, did a 360 examination. Nope, they really designed it this way. The stupid flash can't be used to bounce when shooting in the vertical format! That's right, when most people would be using the bounce effect, taking portraits, you can't bounce the flash. The flash head does not twist horizontally. Nikon even says on their website for the SB-N7, "Experienced shooters often bounce their flash off the ceiling above them or a wall behind them for an attractive softening effect. The Nikon 1 SB-N7 Speedlight's flash head tilts 120° so you can direct the light exactly where you want it—straight ahead, up, behind you and everywhere in-between." Yes, it tilts 120 degrees forward and aft when you hold the camera for the standard horizontal shot. However it's direct flash only if you want to shoot vertical. How is it that the less powerful, supposedly designed for amateurs SB-N5 can bounce for both horizontal and vertical shots but the SB-N7 can't? I'm returning this poorly designed item. Big time goof Nikon.
