The PMD661 MKII from Marantz is a professional stereo field recorder that offers recording, playback, editing and security features in a handheld package. Like its predecessors the PMD660 and the PMD661, the PMD661 MKII incorporates a host of new features and advancements.

New security features have been added to the MKII to help keep your device and your recordings safe from unauthorized access. Menu locking and passcode protection keeps recorder usage restricted. File encryption allows you to lock specific .WAV or .MP3 files and passcode protect them. Encrypted files can only be played back on the PMD661 MKII itself or the included PMD Mark Editor software. These security features may be useful in law enforcement, court recording, surveillance, and government applications. Other new features include the linear retake record function, which allows for quick retake recordings on-the-fly, and the SD card check feature which allows you to easily check the compatibility of a particular SD card type.

In addition to these new features, the PMD661 MKII offers the full gamut of legacy features including on-board microphones, dual XLR inputs to connect external mics and 48V phantom power for condenser microphones. You can also use the S/PDIF digital or 3.5mm mini line input to connect other audio sources. Audio files can be recorded as WAV or MP3 at rates up to 24-bit/96kHz and files can be transferred to your computer via the USB 2.0 port.

Device Passcode Protection
The PMD661 MKII can be locked and passcode protected to prevent unauthorized usage
Audio File Encryption
.MP3 files can be encrypted to .MPS files and .WAV files encrypted to .WAS files which utilize a 4 digit passcode protection feature. Only those with the passcode can open and play the files either on the player or in the new updated PMD Marker Editor software, included in the box
Linear Retake Record Function
Retake record function allows you go back though the previously recorded audio to set a new record start point and retake a specific section of the recording
SD Card Check Compatibility Feature
'SD Card Check' function quickly checks the compatibility of an SD card when inserted. Useful for checking a particular type of SD card prior to buying to make sure the card is compatible
High-Quality Recording
Record stereo or mono WAV or MP3 files at rates up to 24-bit/96kHz
Input Options
Record audio via the built-in microphones, as well as the dual mic/line XLR inputs. The XLR jacks provide +48V phantom power for use with condenser mics. S/PDIF digital and 3.5mm mini line inputs are also provided

Computer Integration
The USB 2.0 port lets you easily transfer audio to a computer, while the included PMD Mark Editor software lets you edit your files

Comments about Marantz PMD661 MKII Professional Portable Flash Field Recorder:

I am upgrading from a Tascam DR100 (the orignal, not the Mark II).

The first PMD661 MkII I received was noisy. It was noisier than the Tascam DR100. I could not believe this at first, but I tested it many different ways. It did not outperform the Tascam DR100. I exchanged it for a second one, that one did outperform the Tascam DR100. So quality control is evidently an issue. If you get one which is noisy, exchange it.

Otherwise, I'm not impressed with the ergonomics or the non-rugged design of the PMD661. Tascam's DR100 has a metal skin, and a lot more switches, dials and knobs. Marantz requires you to hunt through menus to do simple things that are exposed on switches with the Tascam.

I'm staying with the Marantz for the better noise floor, but I would have stayed with the Tascam if it had a better preamp offering.

Comments about Marantz PMD661 MKII Professional Portable Flash Field Recorder:

Wether for rough and rugged field recordings, pro music recording, or quick and easy scratch pad, you name it, this thing has shown up for me big time.
Fast start up, great presets for your 3 favored situations, great ergononics. A tad big for people into spy /stealth recording, but I have done fine hiding it in the curve of my back, with good lavalier sewn in shoulder pads, or a big mic in a shoulder bag. The non pocket size inconvenience is greatly forgotten once you start using this gem. I can actually operate this thing with one hand. Big capacity. Batteries last a long time, if you do not use the phantom power.
The ref. speaker came really handy a few times. plug in the Shure VP88 and you are not going to beleive it. Versatile ins: Dig, line, Xlr... really could not be happier.

Comments about Marantz PMD661 MKII Professional Portable Flash Field Recorder:

Excellent product. Quick startup from *off* position. The Zoom H4N took 17 seconds, sometimes even longer. Also love the dial feature for gain control, as well as quietly soft buttons. I have an Oade modded version which improves the pre-amps and such.

Anyway, just a word of caution...the strap bars are a weak point. I do a lot of run & gun, with the 661 slung under my shoulder. No abuse here. The strap bars started coming loose and one eventually fell off. They are attached by tiny screws from the inside. It's a minor but still significant inconvenience for me. Other than that, it's been a great product.
