Questions? Ask our experts:

Powerful, and designed for both still photographers and videographers, the HVL-F60M External Flash from Sony is loaded with advanced features and capabilities, including complete ADI / P-TTL functionality, the Quick Shift Bounce system, wireless TTL control with ratio, and LED light, and a Quick Navi system with a large dot matrix LCD. Primarily, this unit sits at the top of its respective range due to the excellent guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and 105mm. Also, the zoom head has a range of 24-105mm with full-frame cameras, which can be expanded to 15mm with the built-in wide-angle panel.

Other advanced capabilities of this flash include the Quick Shift Bounce system, which enables pivoting of the head 90° left and right. This allows photographers to keep the flash and LCD properly oriented during vertical shooting. Aiding usage is the Quick Navi control interface which provides comprehensive information on settings and status as well as a click wheel for making fast, intuitive changes on the large dot matrix LCD.

Wireless TTL is available with the top-of-the-line HVL-F60M and includes ratio control in addition to the standard wireless controller and remote flash functions. Ratio control enables setting different outputs for three separate groups of flashes in relation to one another. Specifically for videographers, an LED light has been integrated into this model with an output of 1200 lux at 1.6'. Also, this light has a built-in diffusion panel for softer output and the flash comes with a tungsten color conversion filter for it.

Along with all of these advanced features, this flash has a variety of standard settings, such as slow, high-speed, first and second curtain sync modes as well as a stroboscopic flash setting. It runs on 4 AA batteries which provide a recycle time of 0.1 to 3.5 seconds. Additionally, it is packaged with a bounce adapter, a terminal protector cap, a mini-stand, and a carrying case.

This unit is compatible with Sony's Multi Interface Shoe and is not natively compatible with the older Sony/Minolta Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe. Though, with the use of the included ADP-AMA Shoe Adapter, Sony cameras with the Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe can be adapted to use Multi Interface Shoe external flashes with full compatibility.

Advance Distance Integration (ADI) flash metering works with cameras and lenses with distance encoders to more accurately balance flash output with ambient light and subject reflectivity by taking camera-to-subject distance into account
LED video light has 15 output levels with a maximum luminance of 1200 lux at 1.6' at a max range of 6.5' at ISO 3200 and f/5.6
Stroboscopic flash mode with frequency of 1-100 Hz with bursts of 2-100 flashes
Manual flash output from 1/1 to 1/256 in 1/3 or 1/2 EV steps
Wireless control features 4 channels and 3 groups
Wireless flash ratio control has settings of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and off
Modeling flash settings at either 2 Hz three times or 40 Hz for 4 seconds
Auto zoom function will recognize and adjust for sensor size
Works with FA-EB1AM External Battery Adapter for longer battery life

SONY HVL-F60M is a huge flash. It looks slightly comical and feels a bit unruly on the A7. With this said, the flash functions very well. The color is true and shot to shot recycling rate is respectable. It has an very useful cobra head design allowing the flash to bent 90 degree sideways for portraits. It has a build in bounce card and includes a large diff-user. The bounce mode works well and produces pleasing diffused light for portraits. The build quality top notch and is the same quality as the very best of the other OEMs (Cannon, Nikon came to mind). It has an integrated video light which I didn't test. The flash has multiple operational modes including HSS (high speed sync). I found the menu layout to be intuitive and user friendly. I was able to start using it without reading the manual.

I have read a large number of reviews regarding overheating issue with this flash. I have not experienced this problem on my unit. I tried a number of times to duplicate this issue but wasn't able to. I have set the flash on manual mode in maximum setting and fired away in a dark room. I have put in as much as 50-60 shots back to back without the dreaded overheating icon. Not sure if SONY has changed the design in later batch of this flash. I used Eneloop rechargable cells if that makes difference.

In general, this is a nice flash with a wealth of options. I am not sure if this is a perfect match for A7 since it is so large. That however, is not a fault of the flash.

Sony did a poor job of changing the hot shoe. The added connections are a plus, but the physical mount is weak. This flash does not even have a metal foot, it is made of hardened plastic. Canon, Nikon, Metz flashes have metal foots. After a month of using my A99 and this HVLF60M flash, the foot (on the flash unit itself), that attaches to the hot shoe had cracked. I had to call Sony parts & service and the replacement foot costs $[$]+ shipping. The weight of this large flash unit is too heavy for the new hot shoe mount. My older HVLF58AM flashes never had this problem and they were put through the same wear, except for 3 years long. The Metz Mecablitz 52 AF-1 TTL is half the price of this HVLF60M, but has a real metal foot.My older HVLF58AM also overheated much less than this newer unit. I regularly shoot both flashes at the maximum power or half power, because I always use the bounce flash off of ceilings. This new flash will overheat in about 10 minutes and you will have to wait 5-10 minutes for it to cool down and re-enable. The newer flash overheats 2x or more quicker than the older flash at the same max settings and frequencies, and the new flash takes longer to turn back on.There is a LED video light on this, but I much prefer LED lite panels over this. This new HVLF60M also has a snap on diffuser, and on it are metal pins with a magnetic sensor on the flash. I expect that it is for future colored gels and different tyes of diffusers. Hoping for the third parties to figure out the magnetic coding, and make flash accessories for this flash.Ony 1 star because I bought this flash to use at weddings, expected it to perform at a wedding reception dinner indoors, but it kept overheating on me. It's fustrating.

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

Excellent TTL control when mounted on the camera with no need for an adapter since it already has the new custom Multi Interface shoe. Easy to set up and easy to adjust direction for bouncing the light. I keep a light modifier on top of the flash to avoid any directional lighting problems.

Wireless control for off camera shooting is done by light, not radio or IR, so another Sony flash like the HVL-F20AM must be mounted on the camera. Although in theory radio triggers should allow it to work remotely in manual, testing with both Cactus and Phottix Odin triggers were not successful since in neither case did the firing pin on the HVL-F60M line up with the center contact on the Sony provided adapter. I did manage to get it to work on the Cactus only after whittling down the plastic piece on the back of the shoe that serves as a stop allowing the firing pin to properly align.

So when I need an 'on camera' flash I use this one in TTL since it really does a fantastic job, but I use a third party flash with a Phottix Odin trigger for all 'off camera' work.

    Off camera flash

    By Rudi Dee

    from Mill Valley

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

In order to use the HVL-f60M off camera with the Sony A7r, you need to order the FA-CS1M multi interface shoe to go on the camera, and the FA-MC1AM Off-Camera Flash Cable, with two male ends in order to connect the flash to the camera. Do not order the FA-EC1AM Cable, as it has one female end and one male end, which won't connect the flash to the shoe. However, it is useful as an extension cable for extra length.

Flash seems to have valuable attributes, with led lights and bounce flash flap. But I have not found a way to get it to work with pocket wizards. Being limited to direct cable is a big drawback. That and the fact that it is heavier and a bit larger than my Canon flashes. Detracts from the reason for using mirrorless cameras in the first place, ie for a more compact package. Not sure I would buy this again...

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

I use this SONY flash for my SONY A99 since I do not want to deal with third-party compatibility issues.

The only problem I have encountered with this flash is that the shoe mounting lever is flimsy. The locking button on the lever broke within a few days of use and so the flash would slip out of the shoe. Although B&H made good on a replacement (new flash returned in short time), I now use a velcro-type tie wrap around the mounting for "safety".

If purchased with the bundle, it is definitely worth buying. It helps illuminate subjects and diffuse light with the tilting flash head since the a7/r lacks an in-camera flash.

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

This flash has tremendous range and intelligence. Leave HSS on and shoot at whatever aperture you want. It gets it right nearly every time. It knows when you have the diffuser on and adjusts for it. I've never had a TTL flash with this precision before. The built in LED light is such a nice bonus and the luminosity of it is adjustable. Sony provides an orange filter for daylight look as well as an adapter for older Minolta style shoe.

I tried to get it to overheat because of the bad reviews I had seen. Yes it will but it took 50 full power flashes to do it every ten seconds. That sounds reasonable to me.

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

I ordered this as part of a kit with the A7. It has a very clever design, and decent customizability. Here are the things I didn't expect:

              1) It doesn't include tungsten and florescent diffusers, as Nikons do.
              2) It can't pivot perpendicular to the focal plane. This limits your options to bounce.
              3) The diffuser doesn't fit in the main case, even if you left it on the flash, instead it comes with its own add-on case that can get a little awkward.

Otherwise, it's effective on all fronts. I'm quite happy to no longer have to manually meter flash shots on my Sony.

While there are many negative reviews on this Sony flash due to overheating problems, I have not experienced this on the A7R. Ran a simple test of approx 75 flash shots in a darken room within 4 min span and did not experience overheating. Batteries were generic dollar store varieties. It's a bit large for the A7R, but only one offered with current stack promotion.
LED video light is a nice added feature.

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

When this flash works, it works great, but don't expect to get a lot of photos from it. I first purchased the HVL-F60M a few weeks back. I only did one "shoot" with it, which was for my newborn nephew. In 3.5 hours, trying as hard as I could I only was able to capture 73 photos with the flash (about 1 photo every 3 minutes average) because I spent the majority of the time waiting for the darn thing to not be overheated. It never felt warm to me (batteries or flash) but kept displaying the error. So I returned that flash out of frustration.I decided to give the HVL-F43M a try, as it still had sufficient power for anything I needed photo wise. I was also interested in getting it to work as an off camera flash. Well this ended up pretty much being a no brainer! Let's see. 2 Flashes for the same price of the overheating HVL-F60M. Now I came home, popped in fresh batteries and gave it the best stress test I could do. In 35 minutes, I snapped 362 photos with the HVL-F20M on the camera, and the HVL-F43M sitting elsewhere in the room. FINALLY after my finger was getting sore did the HVL-F43M give me the overheated warning (HVL-F20M still seemed to want to keep trucking). Batteries still seem to be sufficient in both flashes after letting sit to cool, so that is another plus. Let's see - 1 photo every 3 minutes, or about 10 photos a minute? I will take this super combo, thank you! I am not sure why their "flagship" monster flash (HVL-F60M) cannot stay cool. Actually I think it stays cool but I feel maybe the sensor is bad and it seems to be a common issue with this flash. When I put my hand on the top of the flash it is perfectly cool and if I take out the batteries they are not even warm. But alas, I cannot use the flash with the giant thermometer telling me to slow down. About 10 minutes into the HVL-F43M stress test the bulb and batteries were very warm to the touch but the warning never came on until much MUCH later. I hope Sony fixes this issue soon as I still have high hopes for this flash if and ONLY if you could use it as a professional workhorse! The video light is alright on this flash, at least from an all-in-one standpoint if you need something quick. I have some nice LED panels so I won't miss that too much, just the convenience if you really needed it. One final note - as I was really mainly stress testing HVL-F43M, the only "ready" light I paid attention to was the HVL-F43M. Quite often I never let the HVL-F20M CHG light light up (meaning I was firing it at reduced strength) and EVERY time it was still strong enough to set off my HVL-F43M. I understand this seems to be a review of 3 different flashes, and really it is, but I hope this helps you decide the best choice for you!

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

I'm a big fan of what Sony has been doing the past few years since enterin the DLSR market. This flash would be another star in their cap if it only worked. I understand flashguns by their nature have a tendancy to overheat but this is just silly. IMO they should one, either do what Nikon did with the SB900/910 and allow the flash to fire at lower power when it starts to heat up rather than just shut down or two, allow you to set a power limit. ie. tell the flash to not go above a certain power.

As it stands anytime you shoot TTL and the flash fires at full power it will overheat in litterally mintues and even faster depending on the ambient temperature. I've had it overheat on me in about a dozen shots before.

Aside from the overheating issues the flash is a gem but that one flaw is a deal breaker.

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

I am using this flash with my A77 via the shoe adapter supplied, mainly for indoor shooting.
I love the bouncer included and how automatically the flash will change settings when you mount the bouncer on it. Also the LED lighting is cool feature for DSLR video shooting, which also comes with 3200k converter.
The main problem with this flash, is overheating! sadly, it overheats if you are using the flash continuously for 20 shots or so, then you will have to wait 10 minutes to cool down which is also not welcome!
The new hot shoe mount is made of plastic, although it seems hard plastic, a metal shoe will be much more appreciated.

This flash mounted onto the a99 is great. There is a very slight wobble but i don't foresee it to cause too many issues. The bottom foot is plastic with the pins might have been better build if it was medal. Not sure how they would have incorporated the pins with a metal foot though. Forget about what you hear about other reviews mentioning that it does not have a pc sync cord. Either it was overlooked because it is hidden or they do not own this unit. The PC Sync is located on the bottom left side, next to the IR light. It is not labeled but there is a tab that comes off. The LED light is excellent and bright! Use this more often than i would have thought. includes a diffuser and a converter for the hotshot. I would recommend this flash unit. ** I have not experienced overheating but I have not put it under strenuous conditions.

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:

I have only had F60M for two weeks so I cannot speak on all options. The different way the head swivels is wonderful, easy to operate and reduces side shadow. The included diffusion/bounce dome is fantastic. I photographed orchids at the NY Botanical Garden and the light was so soft, with little effort I was able to make the flash light unnoticeable. Menus are easy to navigate, manual overrides easy to find and understand. That's a huge step forward from the older Sony units. The new hotshoe that requires an (included) adapter for older Alpha models is something to complain about. The A99 has it's own adapter for older flashes - it's a mess, at least it feels that way at first. To me it's the price of progress and I got over it. Over all I am very impressed.

Comments about Sony HVL-F60M External Flash:
