The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens from Canon is optimized for full-frame 35mm sensors, and another entry into Canon's high quality L-series of lenses. It has two Super Ultra-low Dispersion (Super UD) and two standard UD lens elements working together to minimize chromatic aberrations, and reduce color blurring around the edges of your subject. Its two types of aspherical elements combine to help reduce spherical aberration over the entire image area and the full zoom range. Optimized lens coatings help ensure exceptional color rendering while minimizing ghosting.

Its ring-type Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) and high-speed CPU, with optimized AF algorithms, ensure you experience quick, quiet and precise autofocusing whenever you need it. The lens has improved dust and water resistance to protect it from damage outdoors, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear lens surfaces resist fingerprints and smearing. The circular nine-bladed diaphragm delivers beautiful, soft background effects. A zoom lock lever holds the zoom position at the 24mm wide end for safe transporting while attached to an EOS DSLR camera over the shoulder - preventing lens creep.

Hybrid Image Stabilization (IS)
Introducing image stabilization to their 24-70mm L-series lenses, Canon's Hybrid IS provides four stops of effective shutter speed compensation for both types of camera shake when shooting macro photography: angular and shift. This means you can shoot in dimmer conditions, capturing images with shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
Dual UD & Super UD Lens Elements
This lens' optical design utilizes two Super UD and two UD lens elements to minimize chromatic aberration in the edges of your wide-angle shots. It also eliminates color blurring around the edge of your subjects, for images with greater resolution and contrast.
Dual Aspherical Lens Elements
In addition to the UD elements, this lens combines two types of aspherical lenses to reduce spherical aberration and achieve high image quality across both the entire screen area and throughout the full 24-70mm zoom range.
Ring-Type Ultra Sonic Motor (USM)
A ring-type USM and high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms enable silent and fast autofocusing to help you focus right on the action.
Minimum Focusing Distance: 1.25'
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 1.25' (0.38 m) across the entire zoom range, excluding the macro mode.
Macro Mode With 0.7x Magnification
Full macro shooting is possible thanks to the Macro Mode Switch. With up to 0.7x magnification, it is easily accessible with a one-touch switch at the 70mm telephoto end of the zoom range.
Manual Focus Override
In One Shot Autofocus mode manual focus can be applied for exacting precision.
Weather Resistant to Dust & Moisture
This lens is highly resistant to dust and water, allowing you to shoot in harsh conditions when necessary.
Fluorine Coatings Reduce Fingerprints
Fluorine coatings on both the front and rear lens surfaces resist smears and fingerprints.
Zoom Lock Lever
Keep your lens from unintentionally extending, or creeping, when you don't want it to with the Zoom Lock lever. It locks the zoom position at the wide end for safe transporting, when the lens is most compact.
9x Circular Aperture Blades
With nine circular blades, the lens' diaphragm delivers soft, pleasant bokeh background effects.

I know this has been the "why did Canon make this particular lens" of the year but here is my experience and take: (shooting on the Canon 5D Mark lll)
I have had a 24-105 F4L since it first came out and have used it for most of my landscape work along with my 17-40L and my longer L series telephotos zooms. It has always been my go to lens for landscapes and my normal walk around lens. I decided to try the 24-70F2.8 ll first . Shot it against the 24-105 and did not find it any sharper in real life tests using the same test subjects I use for all of my new lenses. I also did not like losing the Image stabilization since it would be a go to walk around lens. I also do not need to go to f2.8 for landscapes but it would have been nice for inside low light photos where flash would be a pain or not allowable. But for me I decided I was paying way too much for a stop of light I did not need that much plus losing IS on a go to walk around lens was not that good- especially when the IQ was not any better for me then my 24-105.
So, I decided to give the new 24-70's one more try, sent back the f2.8 and exchanged it for the 24-70 F4. It has now replaced the 24-105 F4 as my primary landscape and walk around lens. It does shoot sharper edge to edge then the 24-105, does not have the barrel distortion at 24mm and shoots a slightly brighter image. It is also a little shorter and lighter. Although I have a dedicated Macro lens, having the "kinda" macro feature is also handy for a close up you were not prepared for. Do I miss the extra stretch from 70- 105 mm sometimes? Yes, but I have plenty of L zooms from 70 + with me at the same time. Just have to change lenses a little more frequently now.
My advice to anyone contemplating the 24-70 F4L over the 24-70 F2.8Lll or the 24-105F4L is this: If you shoot primarily outside and have another good quality zoom that goes over 70mm, get the 24-70 F4L. If you shoot primarily outside but do not have a good zoom over 70mm, go with the 24-105. If you shoot primarily indoors and do not need IS and do not mind spending the extra bucks, then the F2.8

I am pleased with this lens overall, upgrading from old 28-135 lens I've used for over a decade. The 24-70 is sharp and color is brighter and I like the "macro" ability and lens lock-up. The only thing which really frustrates me and makes me gnash my teeth is that the zoom ring is so skinny and ridiculously close to the camera body that it is really hard to zoom. Very awkward and slow to use. Why couldn't the zoom ring be the further out ring and the manual focus ring be closer to the body as in my old 28-135?!?! I can't zoom and support the lens with my hand effectively.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I have wanted this range zoom in the L glass for a while. The f2.8 would've been great, but my budget could not stretch that far, so I order this one instead. I'm so happy I did! I do not see myself missing the extra stop, and the IS makes up for it. It has proven to be sharp as a tack and the colors and contrast are great. This lens has been on my camera since its arrival, and I foresee it becoming my go to lens. Very happy I decided to go for it.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Overall solid lens with macro. When using a MetaBones Speedbooster, this becomes an F2.8. Although sharp and colors looks great on an FS7, the light from the lens changes when you zoom. Darker on tight (70mm) and lighter on wide (24mm), I'd say it's more like 3.5-5.6.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

As with all glass purchases I do a lot of research before I make a purchase. I had a 17-40 earlier that I "lent" to a friend and have not seen it again. I that lens as my primary lens and have missing an option for my everyday lens. It is even better because it is a higher quality lens, it has a longer reach and the macro feature is a very nice added feature. While I have only had it for a couple of weeks I am very impressed. The locking feature is also a plus for wondering around the paths and trails. I hope to compliment this with the addition of a 70-200 in the future.

This is a great lens for an all-purpose studio lens—which is exactly what I bought it for. It is sharp, and has an excellent autofocus. It seems to be solidly built, and there is little to no creep, even when mounted on a copy stand for a long period of time.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This review is based on testing this copy of the 24-70 f/4L lens on a 5Ds R platform and comparing it to my existing 24-105 f/4L lens for the purpose of determining whether the acquisition cost of the lens would be justified, based on any perceived performance advantage over the 24-105 f/4L on this camera.
A side-by-side comparison was made with the lenses mounted on a RRS TVC 24L tripod and using a test target at 15 feet, Camera set on Aperture Priority, ISO 100, f/16. Settings for focal length were: 24, 50, 70mm. The tripod and camera position remained the same throughout the shooting, only the lenses were exchanged. AF spot focus was used and the spot position on the subject was constant.
All images were examined in Photoshop CS 5.2, as raw images, no sharpening or other processing. Magnification was 100%.
Results: 1. At 24mm, both lenses exhibited softness at all 4 corners of the image. Centers were perceived as sharp, slight vignetting for either lens. 2. At 50 mm, lens softness was not apparent with either lens, corners sharp, no vignetting. 3. At 70mm, lens softness was not apparent with either lens, corners sharp, no vignetting. I did not use the lens for macro.
My Conclusion: Based on my typical use of this type of zoom lens, I did not see enough advantage in the performance of the 24-70 f/4L to justify the cost of replacing my 24-105 f/4L for the landscape work that I do. Both of the lenses overall performed very well on the 5Ds R, despite the fact that Canon does not recommend the 24-105 f/4L for this camera. I suspect that they also feel the same about the 24-70 f/4L and would prefer the 24-70 f/2.8L II instead.
I need to evaluate the new 24-70 f/2.8L II to determine if the performance of this lens would justify the price.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I have to start saying the this is only rated 4 stars because the f2.8L II is 5 starts.
This lens is lighter and smaller than the f2.8L II I owned before, offers great sharpness and the macro capabilities come handy when needed, despite I have a dedicated macro lens.
Yes, the f2.8L II is a little sharper but is was not the lens to carry around the whole day on trips so, it stay at home most of the time. For low light applications and portrait, yes the f2.8L II is better and gives you better contrast and bokeh but, this one has the IS that works efficiently and has less barrel distorsion at the wide end.
This one is not for bokehlicious (it's only f/4) but transition to defocussed areas is smooth.
This is now in my bag all the time.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

it would be greater if it has 2.8 aperature but I could not go without Image Stabilizer so I did not have choice. but I am satisfied what I got.

it can be great for multi purpose use.
                24-70 zoom range is awesome.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I researched for a long time before choosing the 24-70 f/4 IS lens. I couldn't afford the 24-70 f/2.8 II lens this was an excellent alternative. This lens is super sharp. I use it as a day to day lens.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

The Canon 24-70 f4 IS Lens is exactly what I wanted. A small, lightweight, sharp-as-a-tack lens with the best, silent, Image Stabilization available. The Canon 24-105 wasn't good for me due to its bulky size and mediocre Image Stabilization. The 24-70 ll 2.8 is amazing BUT its way to big and heavy and lacks image stabilization.

The 24-70 f4 IS Lens is now my go-to lens for 90% of the time. I do a lot of documentary video work; shooting interviews, run-and-gun, pickups and production stills. This lens is PERFECT for all of it. When I need Zeiss Primes, I use them, otherwise, this lens is delivers. If you're handholding for video or want to travel light, this is the ONLY lens you should be considering (as of October 2015).

Also, the ease of manually pulling focus with this lens is a treat.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I just bought the Canon 5dsr and needed a good wide angle zoom lens to take advantage of the high resolution in this camera. The EF 24-70 was up to the task. In addition to the exceptional clarity, this lens has a macro capability that allows me to get extremely close to a subject. I bought this to replace an 18-135 zoom. Losing the 6mm at the wide end has been barely noticeable, but losing the 65 mm at the other end is something else. That would be the only thing I'd change, but I have to admit, the macro feature and the overall clarity have been worth it.

Really like this lens so far, although haven't had much opportunity yet. Good combination with 7D mark II, fast lens and fast camera. Wish it had a little wider field of view. Mostly for landscape and travel photography is the main use of lens.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I love this lens! My wife and I decided to add a 24-70 lens to our kit earlier this year, but were on a budget. So we bought a used copy of the original Canon 24-70 f/2.8L lens. To be honest, it wasn't great. It was inconsistent at best, and we were defaulting to other cheaper lenses because we couldn't rely on it. We finally returned it and exchanged it for a brand new 24-70 f/4L. We've been thrilled. The things we love about it are the image quality, lighter weight and smaller form factor, pro-quality build, the macro mode, the IS, and the PRICE! We use it on our 7Dii and 5Diii. Every photographer should have a 24-70 in their bag, and this is a great option for those on a budget.

I have also used a borrowed Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II, and that lens is amazing—I do believe it's a bit sharper than the f/4 version. That being said, I gave this lens 4 stars only because the f/2.8 version is a 5 star, and I don't believe this lens is quite as good—but still awesome. You can't go wrong.
