The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens from Canon is optimized for full-frame 35mm sensors, and another entry into Canon's high quality L-series of lenses. It has two Super Ultra-low Dispersion (Super UD) and two standard UD lens elements working together to minimize chromatic aberrations, and reduce color blurring around the edges of your subject. Its two types of aspherical elements combine to help reduce spherical aberration over the entire image area and the full zoom range. Optimized lens coatings help ensure exceptional color rendering while minimizing ghosting.

Its ring-type Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) and high-speed CPU, with optimized AF algorithms, ensure you experience quick, quiet and precise autofocusing whenever you need it. The lens has improved dust and water resistance to protect it from damage outdoors, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear lens surfaces resist fingerprints and smearing. The circular nine-bladed diaphragm delivers beautiful, soft background effects. A zoom lock lever holds the zoom position at the 24mm wide end for safe transporting while attached to an EOS DSLR camera over the shoulder - preventing lens creep.

Hybrid Image Stabilization (IS)
Introducing image stabilization to their 24-70mm L-series lenses, Canon's Hybrid IS provides four stops of effective shutter speed compensation for both types of camera shake when shooting macro photography: angular and shift. This means you can shoot in dimmer conditions, capturing images with shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
Dual UD & Super UD Lens Elements
This lens' optical design utilizes two Super UD and two UD lens elements to minimize chromatic aberration in the edges of your wide-angle shots. It also eliminates color blurring around the edge of your subjects, for images with greater resolution and contrast.
Dual Aspherical Lens Elements
In addition to the UD elements, this lens combines two types of aspherical lenses to reduce spherical aberration and achieve high image quality across both the entire screen area and throughout the full 24-70mm zoom range.
Ring-Type Ultra Sonic Motor (USM)
A ring-type USM and high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms enable silent and fast autofocusing to help you focus right on the action.
Minimum Focusing Distance: 1.25'
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 1.25' (0.38 m) across the entire zoom range, excluding the macro mode.
Macro Mode With 0.7x Magnification
Full macro shooting is possible thanks to the Macro Mode Switch. With up to 0.7x magnification, it is easily accessible with a one-touch switch at the 70mm telephoto end of the zoom range.
Manual Focus Override
In One Shot Autofocus mode manual focus can be applied for exacting precision.
Weather Resistant to Dust & Moisture
This lens is highly resistant to dust and water, allowing you to shoot in harsh conditions when necessary.
Fluorine Coatings Reduce Fingerprints
Fluorine coatings on both the front and rear lens surfaces resist smears and fingerprints.
Zoom Lock Lever
Keep your lens from unintentionally extending, or creeping, when you don't want it to with the Zoom Lock lever. It locks the zoom position at the wide end for safe transporting, when the lens is most compact.
9x Circular Aperture Blades
With nine circular blades, the lens' diaphragm delivers soft, pleasant bokeh background effects.

I know this has been the "why did Canon make this particular lens" of the year but here is my experience and take: (shooting on the Canon 5D Mark lll)
I have had a 24-105 F4L since it first came out and have used it for most of my landscape work along with my 17-40L and my longer L series telephotos zooms. It has always been my go to lens for landscapes and my normal walk around lens. I decided to try the 24-70F2.8 ll first . Shot it against the 24-105 and did not find it any sharper in real life tests using the same test subjects I use for all of my new lenses. I also did not like losing the Image stabilization since it would be a go to walk around lens. I also do not need to go to f2.8 for landscapes but it would have been nice for inside low light photos where flash would be a pain or not allowable. But for me I decided I was paying way too much for a stop of light I did not need that much plus losing IS on a go to walk around lens was not that good- especially when the IQ was not any better for me then my 24-105.
So, I decided to give the new 24-70's one more try, sent back the f2.8 and exchanged it for the 24-70 F4. It has now replaced the 24-105 F4 as my primary landscape and walk around lens. It does shoot sharper edge to edge then the 24-105, does not have the barrel distortion at 24mm and shoots a slightly brighter image. It is also a little shorter and lighter. Although I have a dedicated Macro lens, having the "kinda" macro feature is also handy for a close up you were not prepared for. Do I miss the extra stretch from 70- 105 mm sometimes? Yes, but I have plenty of L zooms from 70 + with me at the same time. Just have to change lenses a little more frequently now.
My advice to anyone contemplating the 24-70 F4L over the 24-70 F2.8Lll or the 24-105F4L is this: If you shoot primarily outside and have another good quality zoom that goes over 70mm, get the 24-70 F4L. If you shoot primarily outside but do not have a good zoom over 70mm, go with the 24-105. If you shoot primarily indoors and do not need IS and do not mind spending the extra bucks, then the F2.8

I've ordered this lens twice now, and had to return it both times due to disappointing image quality. The first copy was definitely better than my existing 24-105 at 24mm, but had serious focus-shift issues at medium to long focal lengths and all distances. If i'd been willing to take the Canon warranty service gamble, it might've turned into a good lens in the end. But that's a real big gamble there. The second copy was noticeably worse than the first copy, and slightly worse than my 24-105 on average. And in several test shots, it was real soft away from the center. I think it probably had some correctable calibration issues, but again i decided not to risk the Canon service gamble. The IS was slightly better than my 24-105.I still haven't given up on this lens, but due to the excessive IQ variation i've been seeing here, i'll probably have to bite the bullet, pay the $[$]salestax hit, and buy locally instead, where i can test the lens copy out before buying.Maybe part of my trouble is with the local UPS gorillas who really trash the brown boxes out here. The 24-70 f/4 just isn't packaged well enough by Canon to handle the sort of rough treatment UPS gives it.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I wanted a catch-most lens to go with my 70-200mm. For years, I've seen people shooting with their 24-70's on all the time and swearing by them. Usually I run and gun with a 14mm, 16-35mm, 50mm and 70-200mm. The focal ranges are obvious in that by replacing the 14 and 16-35 I would be losing some wide angle shots. I gave it ago anyway. Here's what I found: This lens is acceptable sharp, not wow sharp. The colors reproduced are on point with all my other lenses (including the 85 and 100mm). Form factor is great as it's compact and easy to use. Macro is a nice touch, but I've yet to use it professionally. The IS is a huge plus. Keeps things stable, especially at 70mm. The bad: This lens is not f4 all the way through, no way. Noticeably darker at 70mm, maybe a stop or two. A little soft at 50mm, not unusable, but a significant difference from the 50mm. I found myself wanting to be wider, I guess I'm just used to the 16-35. In the end, the jury is still deliberating whether or not I'll keep it. It does cover a good focal range and produces a decent image. It is "L" glass, but like the 24-105mm, I just found it not as tack sharp as the 2.8's and lower. I know this has nothing to do with it, as my 70-200mm f4 is one of my favorite lenses. I'm using this lens on a Sony FS700 with a MetaBones Speedbooster, bringing down to a 2.8. Even at this f stop, it seems very standard to me, maybe I need more hours with it. For the price, you really can't complain. You get what you pay for. Is it worth $-$ ? Yes. Is it as sharp as the 2.8 or other "L" glass? No. Is it sharper than the 24-105? Just a little.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I bought this lens after a lot of thought and I am very happy with this. This lens is ridiculously sharp and is a good size and weight. I bought this because I'm in the process of upgrading to full-frame equipment. The difference between this and the EF-S equivalents is amazing. The tough decision was between this one and the f2.8. I feel that for my needs, the image stabilization was more important than the extra stops. This lens more than meets my needs.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I considered 3 lenses namely Sigma 24-105 f4 DG OS HSM and the Canon 24-105 f3.5 to 5.6 IS STM. I read mixed reviews of the Sigma added to which it has not been available at B&H for some weeks, the Canon 24-105 had little written about it (today there is an article in the UK magazine Amateur Photographer which gives it an average review.

I therefore opted for the Canon 24-70.

It has so far proved very good and extremely quiet.

The loss of one stop on the 2.8 is offset by the difference in cost. As I will use the lens for landscape work I am unlikely to shoot with it wide open and there should be little disadvantage. It is also lighter to carry around which is a benefit.

So far I have not found fault with the lens and hope that remains the case.

I bought this lens and the 24-105. I sent the 24-105 back. This lens is very sharp, the image stabilization works incredibly well, and the macro mode is very nice. The lens also seems a bit brighter than the 24-105 in testing on my 6D.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This is a great walk-around lens. It's lighter and smaller than the 24-105 and its big brother the f2.8. It's super sharp and just a great lens. And the macro takes it to the next level, this lens is extremely versatile! There is a lock on the lens hood that is weird just because I'm not used to it. I have used this for photography and video and it does great at both.

Useful for parties, scenery where frequent changes of prime lenses would be necessary. Sharpness is comparable to prime lenses at f/4.
Weight is a problem for hiking trips.
          F/4 is generally sufficient.

I bought this lens to replace my much older (from 2002) Canon 28-70mm f/2.8L Lens. You are probably wondering why, well my old lens took beautiful pictures, but it didn't have IS and my flash unit could not read the lens so I was constantly struggling with proper exposure adjustments when shooting at special events. I love my new lens!!! It also takes sharp beautiful pictures and my flash and it work perfectly together so less headaches for me! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it is an f/4.0.....obviously not the fault of the lens I just couldn't justify spending the extra $$ for the f/2.8 when I would mainly use a higher f-stop anyway for group shots. If you don't have to have a f2.8 I definitely recommend this lens!!

Great lens, an improvement over the 24 to 105 f-4 in both sharpness and pin cushion distortion. With the image stabilization you can save on the weight of the f-2.8 version and still maintain sharpness in fairly low light situations. I would still prefer an internal zoom lens but the extension is minimal and the zoom is very smooth.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I use this lens on a cropped sensor camera, Canon 7D. It's much sharper than the best EF-S lens at all zooms. Although an f/4 lens, I was surprised at the amount of light it gets through the glass. As an all purpose lens, I use it indoors as well. For group shots in a large dim lit room with a 430EX Canon flash I can shoot at f/8 and 1/100 exposure and I get better results than an EF-S lens at comparable focal length. Landscape detail, and oddly enough saturation, is much better as well. I do no intend to use the macro function, the Canon EF 100mm does a much better job. For portraits it does a decent job, however a 85mm or 70-200mm would be a better choice in this case. The lens is not bulky or heavy. The only complaint I have is that the zoom ring in on the inner side of the barrel and my fingers hit the camera body while zooming. The lens construction seems to be very sturdy, I would say much better than the EF-S lenses.

                  Great General Purpose Lens

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I went this route since I primarily shoot primes indoors and wanted something to compliment my 6D outdoors. Very solid build! Macro mode is fun, useable and easier than some have said to engage. After a day with it, I find the change second nature. There is a lighting issue, but macro is a bonus, not the primary reason one should buy this. I like the zoom lock as I have the camera and lens hanging from a black rapid at my side and it is easily knocked around from time to time. Probably just a mental thing, but this is my only non-internal zooming lens, so it makes me feel a little better. Oh, and the color, contrast, and sharpness are all on par or better than my other L's. The size is a plus as well. Highly recommended!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I was going to upgrade my old 24-70/2.8L Mk1 to Mk2, and ended up getting this one instead (and keeping the original Mk1). And now the f4L is staying on my 5D most of the time, and the f2.8L only gets to be put on if I need to shoot portraits. I also bought the tiny 270EX II flashlight to help the f4L with very low light situation. With the rebate now, this lens is very good value for money!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I'm a wedding photographer. I purchased this lens after owning the 24-70 f2.8 II for about 1 year. I need IS in certain situations. I now own both lenses and love them both. I haven't used the 24-70 f4 IS enough to make an honest comparison but I expect it will perform very well.
