The EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens from Canon is a wide-angle prime lens with a fast maximum aperture. It is ideal as an everyday lens and is very effective in low light conditions

The lens' ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM), rear focusing system, and high-speed CPU--with optimized AF algorithms--ensure that you experience quick, quiet and precise autofocus action. Its circular eight-bladed diaphragm gives pleasing, soft background effects, and a Glass Molded (GMo) aspherical lens element minimizes aberrations and contributes to higher image quality out to the edges of the frame.

Adjust focus using either autofocus (AF), or full-time manual focus, without having to switch modes or change camera settings. Optical Image Stabilization (IS) gives up to 4 shutter speed stops of compensation against the blur caused by camera shake, providing clearer images when shooting in low light. A micro-stepping drive provides quieter operation and a low speed focus drive delivers optimal results when shooting video.

Optical Image Stabilization (IS)
Canon's optical Image Stabilization provides four stops of effective shutter speed compensation for camera shake, and can detect normal shooting or panning and automatically switch to the optimal IS mode. This means you can shoot in dimmer conditions, capturing images with shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
Glass Molded Aspherical Element (GMo)
A single Glass Molded (GMo) aspherical lens element achieves high image quality with improved performance in the edges of the lens.
Rear Focusing & Ultrasonic Motor (USM)
A ring-type USM, high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms, and rear-focusing system combine to enable silent and fast autofocusing to help you focus right on the action.
Full-Time Manual Focus Override
With this lens, you have access to full-time manual focus for manual adjustment even while in AF mode.
Micro‐Stepping Drive Aperture
The construction of the aperture mechanism uses micro-stepping drive control for quieter operation during each shot.
Minimum Focusing Distance: 9.48"
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.48" (24 cm).
8x Circular Diaphragm Blades
With eight circular blades, the lens' diaphragm delivers very pleasant, soft bokeh background effects.

I Initially bought the 1.4 about 3 days before B&H put this on their website, I then bought this lens to test both lenses and see which fit my needs better. I will give you a quick overview of what i found about both lenses. This conclusion was based using a chart, and my 5d mk2. This is my second 1.4L as well as the one i bought a year earlier i needed to return for money issues. And this recent model was a much better performing lens then my past 1.4L.

    The 1.4L
    Pros
    -Better construction
    -more professional feeling
-Max 1.4 for great selective focus.

    Cons
-Cooler color Temp (as per my testing)
-Worse and noticeable CA (for you who do not know, when you get to the corners of the image, you get ghosting of green and purple tints around details)
-Equal Falloff at Max Aperture as the USM

    The 2.0 USM
    Pros
    -Lightweight
    -IS
-INCREDIBLY more sharp then the 1.4 @ 1.4 and 2.0 corner to corner. The 2.0 USM is sharper throughout the frame then the 1.4L. Even when stopping down to f4, on both lenses they are equal sharpness but the CA is still worse on the 1.4L
-VERY minimal and unnoticeable CA if any.
-Bokeh is much smoother then the 1.4L as it has rounded blades for more circular OFF (Out of Focus) blurs.
-Color temp was warmer (Which i prefer but all can be altered in photoshop).
-IS is silent and much better then the previous IS motors on earlier lenses.

    Cons
    -Overpriced
    -Cheap plastic construction
    -No lens hood yet
    -Max aperture at 2.0

    Conclusion:
The 35 F2 USM is a great performing lens and the 2.0 is the perfect formulation for the 35mm focal length. It performs way better then the 1.4 optically. The 1.4L is better built and you can feel the quality put into that lens. The price for the 35 f2 is overpriced just because of the cheap plastics it is built with, but Canon figures that it is an amazing performer that they can charge that price and people who know will pay for it, IN both video (IS is a great plus for videographers) and photography.

I am returning the 1.4L just because of its weaker performance optically, higher price tag (but not by much). And the f2 will benefit me with handheld videos during weddings and various projects that require video. Its too bad the f2 isnt an L Glass with metal construction bc i would pay for that in a heartbeat without hesitation.

If you are debating between the 1.4L and the 2.0 USM and can wait alittle longer, Wait until the price goes down for the 2.0 USM because $100-$200 decrease this lens should be in everyones bag. Also i was considering the Sigma but the various Auto-focusing issues (Back or Forward Focus) scared me, since i did not want to keep changing lenses to search for that perfect lens.

I hope this helped you decide on the lens. Good luck

See my full review on youtube (use key word safari pepenzi)

    Basically:

    a. The lens is sharp
    b. The colors and contrast were acceptable indoors but rather a struggle for night shots outdoors
    c. The lens performed poorly when pointed directly at light source with unacceptable flares
    d. The image stabilization in video mode performed rather sub standard. Shots were shaky hand held with IS turned on, very much like non IS lenses. Stable parts of the handheld shots were more of trying harder to hold steady versus lens IS doing its job.
    e. The lens is light weight
    f. Autofocus in photo mode was semi slow and in low light, lens found it hard to nail focus
    g. Manual focus ring was not as fluid but usable

Overall, it was hard to justify the cost of this lens. IF autofocus was reliable in low light, If Image Stabilization was effective, if lens coating were more resistant to light flares, then it would have been a keeper.

Please note, this is an independent opinion based on limited use of this lens over a period of two days. This is by no means an all inclusive testing but I did quite enough shots to give me a verdict. I do however hope this helps someone out there with at least some information, considering the lens is new and not too many real world reviews available as of the time of this writing.

I purchased the lens here at and Returned it. While I think the lens can be capable, I just could not fall in love with it, as much as I really wanted to :( . Would try the Sigma 35mm 1.4...fingers crossed.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

Been shooting with video cameras for many years professionally and for fun. I'm semi retired now recently took an interest in DSLR's purchase a Canon 70d about 8 mo. ago. I just now felt ready to move on from the kit lens. When I first saw the EF 35mm quite some time ago I dismissed it as being to expensive, almost a grand. It's still rather overpriced especially with no lens hood included. That being said thought I would give it a try and now have decided to keep it.Pros – Very nicely balanced on the 70d only weighs 11oz. easy to shoot and carry around.Descent build quality not L quality but still good. It's a good focal length for my needs on the 70d it's around 55mm Fairly fast at f/2 sharp wide open, tact sharp across the frame at f 2.8 Full Time Manual focus ring is smooth and well damped easy to use.The IS makes a difference with hand held videos, nice feature, very quiet.AF works very quickly in fairly low light (one small lamp in room) Takes beautiful still portraits and close ups very pleasing colors, contrast, detail. When needed it works exceptionally well with my Speedlite 580exII.No distortion or serious vignette problems mounted on the 70d on FF camera there is some but the EF 35mm lens profiles correct these issues in camera while shooting.Minor Cons -Being a video shooter I was a little disappoint in the focus motor noise it is noticeable and will be recorded on your sound track when using the onboard camera mics. However I often use external mics or recorders anyway. Also I enjoy overriding the AF manually pulling focus to get artistic effects and this lens fits my needs. In most situations though the focus motor noise goes unnoticed by the folks around you when shooting stills or videos. AF will hunt and have trouble locking on in candlelight (a few candles) or in very poor light. I generally switch to manual focus and live view at that point anyway. Conclusion -I thought about purchasing the Sigma 35mm f1.4 its and excellent fast lens but very heavy over twice the weight of the Canon. The thought of carrying it around all night made my arms ache. No IS feature and cost over $ more. Did not feel the $ for a little fast sharper lens was worth it in my case. Additionally several reviewers complained about inconsistent AF issues when used with their 70d's even under good lighting conditions. The 70d is a good camera it's not full frame of course but with this EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens and fairly good light it comes close to producing comparable images. Sometimes it's very hard for my friends with FF cameras to tell the images apart. The AF gets a fast solid lock though the viewfinder or with live view in fairly low light. This lens has definitely brought out the best in my 70d and I recommend it for anyone looking for a sharp, fairly fast prime lens with general use focal length.

    BLOWN AWAY!!!!

    By Pump

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I have heard all the rumors of this lens... From it isn't that great to this lens should be an L lens..... So after months of reading and looking at images I went to my local camera store to shoot with one, but it's hard to judge a lens by just shooting in the camera store. So I went back into reading reviews... I recently came back to Canon after trying to switch to Fuji I enjoyed the X-T1 but its not good enough in low light for me just yet. So coming back to Canon I had owned the 35mm 1.4L before and the Sigma 35mm 1.4. One day i said forget it came here ordered the lens and I can honestly say this lens is a beast!!! I have some great images already I haven't had it a month and I'm not disappointed in my purchase I can't wait for my first wedding with it in April. I just shot with it in the studio and it was great! It's fast and accurate. The stabilization is great especially for video. Colors resemble the L series lenses. Build quality is nice I love the weight of the lens and the look of it. It really is an L without the price get it you'll love it!!!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I have a 60D and some day would like to add a full-frame. I wanted a prime lens, something faster than the f/3.5 and f/4 zooms I have. I considered the 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm. Anyway after reading review after review I decided on the 35.

This lens is great! On my crop sensor body it's very sharp at f2, in fact, seems to be sharp at all apertures. Even on a full frame, any of the issues it has are gone by f2.8. The IS works great as well. I have a very high "keeper" rate even at 1/6 sec. Auto focus is fast and accurate.

My only grippe is a typical one for Canon. No hood included.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

It's a good lens, decent build, AF struggles in artificial light.
IS makes this lens very expensive and heavy, and it's mostly useless for such bright lens with short FL. AF is loud and lens is not suitable for video or Live View.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I recently started taking photography classes and initially started out buying the Canon EOS Rebel T5i (body only) and a 50 mm prime lens. After getting into the photography more, I needed another lens! When inside or in tight spaces, I needed a wider angle on the lens. So I finally was able to purchase this lens, getting the free shipping, plus the $[$] rebate. I'm very pleased with this lens. The clarity has been great, and I love using it when taking pictures of families, as the 50 mm lens was difficult at times to get all of the family members into the shot. I'm also very happy with B&H Photo as well. Great customer service!

I wanted a nice relatively fast, normal'ish prime for indoor photos on my 70d. Works like a charm, and the images are outstanding, especially compared to my 24-105L.

I did use the lens for some video, and it is a fairly loud lens during autofocus, if anyone is looking to use it in that manner.

I always wanted the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art, but finally chose the 35IS which is cheaper, lighter, and most likely a little more reliable.. It works perfectly with EOS 6D, and the color is very nice. Not perfect at f2 but sharp enough. Bokeh is great for a 35mm.

I wanted to add a 35mm prime lens to my Canon system without spending a fortune for an L series lens. Guess if I could afford an L lens, I would purchase one. That said, I wanted a "fast" f/2 35mm that would give me sharp images. This lens delivers!! I have a Canon 5D and a Canon 5D Mark III. I think this lens is special. Love the fact it has an IS system. It's light and I'm very happy. Downside is the price and it doesn't come with a shade (which I purchased separately).

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

Great lens for APS-C cameras (I own a Canon 70D). 35mm lens is an effective 56mm - perfect for shooting landscapes and portraits, and, because it's an f2, it's also great for taking shots indoors without needing flash. 35mm doesn't create the wide-angle effect you get with wider angle lenses, so the shots come out looking undistorted. Expensive, but it's a lens that gets lots of use because of its versatility (especially for APS-C format cameras).

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

This is a great lens to shoot video. With a nice low light F stop of 2 and image stabilization this makes for a great video lens, not to mention a nice wide angle portrait lens. The build quality is above average and if you purchase it you will not be disappointed.

I owned prior a canon 100 mm macro lens which is awesome for close up but the biggest drawback is that most times you have to keep moving back to be able to fit all in. on the other hand w/ my new 35 mm w/ IS which on a 50d is equivalent to 56 mm which is what the eues sees. only used it once and cant wait to the presceptive I will be able to get from this lens

Overall very happy with this lens. I think it's a great value.. Used it a lot for a music studio shoot (low lighting) and liked the results combined with my 5D MIII. My wallet liked it as well -vs- the 35L. Look forward to using it for my travel kit and general purpose lens.
