The EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens from Canon is a wide-angle prime lens with a fast maximum aperture. It is ideal as an everyday lens and is very effective in low light conditions

The lens' ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM), rear focusing system, and high-speed CPU--with optimized AF algorithms--ensure that you experience quick, quiet and precise autofocus action. Its circular eight-bladed diaphragm gives pleasing, soft background effects, and a Glass Molded (GMo) aspherical lens element minimizes aberrations and contributes to higher image quality out to the edges of the frame.

Adjust focus using either autofocus (AF), or full-time manual focus, without having to switch modes or change camera settings. Optical Image Stabilization (IS) gives up to 4 shutter speed stops of compensation against the blur caused by camera shake, providing clearer images when shooting in low light. A micro-stepping drive provides quieter operation and a low speed focus drive delivers optimal results when shooting video.

Optical Image Stabilization (IS)
Canon's optical Image Stabilization provides four stops of effective shutter speed compensation for camera shake, and can detect normal shooting or panning and automatically switch to the optimal IS mode. This means you can shoot in dimmer conditions, capturing images with shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
Glass Molded Aspherical Element (GMo)
A single Glass Molded (GMo) aspherical lens element achieves high image quality with improved performance in the edges of the lens.
Rear Focusing & Ultrasonic Motor (USM)
A ring-type USM, high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms, and rear-focusing system combine to enable silent and fast autofocusing to help you focus right on the action.
Full-Time Manual Focus Override
With this lens, you have access to full-time manual focus for manual adjustment even while in AF mode.
Micro‐Stepping Drive Aperture
The construction of the aperture mechanism uses micro-stepping drive control for quieter operation during each shot.
Minimum Focusing Distance: 9.48"
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.48" (24 cm).
8x Circular Diaphragm Blades
With eight circular blades, the lens' diaphragm delivers very pleasant, soft bokeh background effects.

I Initially bought the 1.4 about 3 days before B&H put this on their website, I then bought this lens to test both lenses and see which fit my needs better. I will give you a quick overview of what i found about both lenses. This conclusion was based using a chart, and my 5d mk2. This is my second 1.4L as well as the one i bought a year earlier i needed to return for money issues. And this recent model was a much better performing lens then my past 1.4L.

    The 1.4L
    Pros
    -Better construction
    -more professional feeling
-Max 1.4 for great selective focus.

    Cons
-Cooler color Temp (as per my testing)
-Worse and noticeable CA (for you who do not know, when you get to the corners of the image, you get ghosting of green and purple tints around details)
-Equal Falloff at Max Aperture as the USM

    The 2.0 USM
    Pros
    -Lightweight
    -IS
-INCREDIBLY more sharp then the 1.4 @ 1.4 and 2.0 corner to corner. The 2.0 USM is sharper throughout the frame then the 1.4L. Even when stopping down to f4, on both lenses they are equal sharpness but the CA is still worse on the 1.4L
-VERY minimal and unnoticeable CA if any.
-Bokeh is much smoother then the 1.4L as it has rounded blades for more circular OFF (Out of Focus) blurs.
-Color temp was warmer (Which i prefer but all can be altered in photoshop).
-IS is silent and much better then the previous IS motors on earlier lenses.

    Cons
    -Overpriced
    -Cheap plastic construction
    -No lens hood yet
    -Max aperture at 2.0

    Conclusion:
The 35 F2 USM is a great performing lens and the 2.0 is the perfect formulation for the 35mm focal length. It performs way better then the 1.4 optically. The 1.4L is better built and you can feel the quality put into that lens. The price for the 35 f2 is overpriced just because of the cheap plastics it is built with, but Canon figures that it is an amazing performer that they can charge that price and people who know will pay for it, IN both video (IS is a great plus for videographers) and photography.

I am returning the 1.4L just because of its weaker performance optically, higher price tag (but not by much). And the f2 will benefit me with handheld videos during weddings and various projects that require video. Its too bad the f2 isnt an L Glass with metal construction bc i would pay for that in a heartbeat without hesitation.

If you are debating between the 1.4L and the 2.0 USM and can wait alittle longer, Wait until the price goes down for the 2.0 USM because $100-$200 decrease this lens should be in everyones bag. Also i was considering the Sigma but the various Auto-focusing issues (Back or Forward Focus) scared me, since i did not want to keep changing lenses to search for that perfect lens.

I hope this helped you decide on the lens. Good luck

See my full review on youtube (use key word safari pepenzi)

    Basically:

    a. The lens is sharp
    b. The colors and contrast were acceptable indoors but rather a struggle for night shots outdoors
    c. The lens performed poorly when pointed directly at light source with unacceptable flares
    d. The image stabilization in video mode performed rather sub standard. Shots were shaky hand held with IS turned on, very much like non IS lenses. Stable parts of the handheld shots were more of trying harder to hold steady versus lens IS doing its job.
    e. The lens is light weight
    f. Autofocus in photo mode was semi slow and in low light, lens found it hard to nail focus
    g. Manual focus ring was not as fluid but usable

Overall, it was hard to justify the cost of this lens. IF autofocus was reliable in low light, If Image Stabilization was effective, if lens coating were more resistant to light flares, then it would have been a keeper.

Please note, this is an independent opinion based on limited use of this lens over a period of two days. This is by no means an all inclusive testing but I did quite enough shots to give me a verdict. I do however hope this helps someone out there with at least some information, considering the lens is new and not too many real world reviews available as of the time of this writing.

I purchased the lens here at and Returned it. While I think the lens can be capable, I just could not fall in love with it, as much as I really wanted to :( . Would try the Sigma 35mm 1.4...fingers crossed.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

This lens was purchased to use with a 5DMIII for photo journalism and landscapes. Not great wide open (too much vignetting, visible bokeh fringing, not sharp enough), but very good by f/2.8 and excellent from f/4 to f/8 where it will be used most. Focusing is fast and sure. Stabilization is a relief to have indoors. Foreground bokeh can be a bit harsh in landscapes, but that is typical of the wide angle lenses that I have used. Overall build quality is fine. Not weather sealed, but the focusing is internal and the tolerances seem tight, so this probably won't be a problem. Love the fact that it is compact and light; perfect for a small kit that doesn't intimidate people and easy to carry around on vacation. At this price, the lens should come with a hood and pouch.

I haven't used prime lens for sometime, I was caught up in easy to use zooms. This lens has reminded me as to how good primes are. I know that it isn't a L lens, but the sharpness, contrast and colors that come through make this a great lens. i use it on my 70D and 50D and I like it with the crop factor.

It's a very nice lens. Accurate and very sharp. I love it as my every day street photography default lens. The only one thing which disappoint me - Canon doesn't provide lens hood for this lens. Original price of this lens was around $[*]. Now it's $[*]0 and no Lens Hood? Of course you can buy it separately for almost $60 which is ridiculous to pay $[*] for a lens and then extra 60 for a piece of plastic which should come with it by default. It's like buying a lens without front and rear cap. SMH Canon Fail! I had my doubts about this lens first - since it is my first non-L lens. And usually Canon non-L lenses are very plastic and cheap. But this lens feels solid - not as solid as Zeiss 35 Distagon all metal tanks, but still very solid, nice round bokeh, smooth focusing ring.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

This is a compact light lens- very handy and non obtrusive. The focus is fast and seems to have high image quality. I chose this over the Art Sigma as it is a carry around do all lens. My camera gear is heavy enough. If I travel, this is the one. Great for candids.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I do a lot of people shots, portraits, etc. My two most useful lens were 24-105mm f/4L and 70-200 f/4L. Decided to move on to Full Frame, sold my 7D and most of my other zoom lenses. Bought a 6D and decided primes are the way to go now.
This 35mm f/2 IS (cannot afford the 35mm f/1.4L) plus 85mm f/1.8 and 135 f/2L are now in my bag to handle most everything.
I find the 35mm f/2 IS is fast, sharp, lightweight and fun as a walk-around lens.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I love this lens! I purchased to shoot weddings and portraits and it has not let me down. Initially reading reviews it was a toss up between this copy and the 1.4 L. I rented the 1.4 and although it was a wonderful lens I just couldn't justify the price when this lens was so good.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

great low light option for lots of situations, but the photographer needs to be aware that when you open up the aperture to say 2.0 the shallow depth of field really makes it hard to get critical focus on your subject - I had to learn to concentrate on the subject as the focus point - the lens on auto focus is super fast to focus so it's up to the photographer to learn how to get a sharp keeper.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I use it for portrait/documentary photography. The minimum focusing distance coupled with low distortion won me over. I have all but retired my 50mm 1.4 except for certain situations - and while there's nothing wrong with that lens, it is still beautiful and beautifully sharp - my choice boils down to style preference. The 50mm felt claustrophobic. The 35 gives me the breathing room I need.I'm not crazy about having to toggle AF/MF, but that wasn't a deal breaker. While at BH I tried the 35mm 1.4. Of course that was sweet, but unless you MUST HAVE 1.4, there was no earthly reason to shell out the money. I also I tried the 28 and 24, and while both were sharp, the distortion was more than I wanted to deal with.

Needed a night sky and an indoor lens. Easy and lightweight to use. Light enough to carry in Lowepro Passport Sling2 for lowlight shots at the zoo and at museums. Excellent value for a non "L" lens. Main camera is a 6D; backup camera is a 60D.Bought it for astrophotography, as well; however, I have not had a chance to go out for night sky photography since I bought it.
