The 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras from Sigma is the first entry into Sigma's Art series of professional lenses, with an emphasis on artistic expression and the creative potential of the lens. With a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, floating inner focusing system, and Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) you'll have quick and accurate control over the artistic effects achieved by the lens' high quality elements.
For wide angle photography, this 35mm lens and its circular 9-bladed f/1.4 aperture ensure excellent brightness and blurred background (bokeh) effects. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.
The lens' Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) and floating inner focusing system ensure that you experience quick, quiet and precise autofocusing whenever you need it. Adjust focus using either autofocus (AF), or full-time manual focus, without having to switch camera modes or change settings - just flick the switch from AF to MF.
For greater build quality and strength, all metallic parts and the new Thermally Stable Composite compound material (TSC), are housed internally. Its brass made bayonet mount has both high accuracy and durability, and a special treatment is applied to its surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term daily use.

Well, I don't have canon 1.4L, but I am very satisfied with is build quality and the image quality. I use this mainly for indoor, low light condition. So I am really looking forward to a good performance at f/2 if not f/1.4. I know max out aperture will be a little soft, but f/1.4 is totally usable. f/2 is sharp enough that I won't doubt if I should use f/2. The sweet spot will be between f/2.8, f/4 and f/5.6, and the image result from these aperture are very, very sharp. I did not test small apertures as I don't have to use it with small aperture.

I was excited about this lens. While not a terribly stable photographer I reasoned that the doubled shutter speed would make up for my shakes (comparing with the Canon 35mm f/2 IS). Alas, focus issues made me reluctantly return it. Had the Sigma consistently front or back focused I probably would have kept it (The USB Dock seems intriguing). My copy however demonstrated what I consider to be too many shots that were either front or back focused. I've seen a few reviews that indicated their second copy was much improved in this area but I elected to try the 35mm f/2 IS instead. Time will tell if I was right. I'll post a review of that lens when I get it. As for most other aspects of the review, others can enunciate far better than I. The AF issues kept me from being a fan however.

Comments about Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras:
I am coming from an NEX 5N where I consistently used the Zeiss 24. Now I have a Canon 6D and this is the lens that had a similar focal length on a full frame camera to my NEX combo. The first thing I noticed is how heavy this lens is (and large). I believe this lens alone is heavier than my NEX 5N and Zeiss 24 lens combo. But this is as good as 35mm gets on any DSLR camera. Image quality is the bottom line and this lens delivers. So, 5 stars. But it does have some negatives:
1. size and weight.
2. minimum focusing distance is considerably longer than my Zeiss 24 lens, which was around 6". The Sigma 35 is around 11", so that's unfortunate. However, it's very comparable the Canon 35L in this regard, but that doesn't make it appealing to me. I don't want to deal with extension tubes or whatever to get near macro shooting, I just want a lens this size to deliver.
3. That's it with the negative and it's all good otherwise. Sharp, nice bokeh, and terrific wide open. I am pleased.

Comments about Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras:
I'm not gonna get into a technical review (obviously), as there are a number of good professional reviews out there. But I'll share my personal experience. But before that I have to say that build quality, sharpness, and color/contrast on the copy I ended up keeping is amazing. Especially because this is the first higher end lens I've used. The only minor non-important issue is that the rubber on the focus ring attracts more dust. I never had this issue on my other lenses.
The very first copy that I got was really solid. Couldn't feel or hear any moving elements when shaking it. The auto-focus also seemed to be very accurate based on some basic tests I did (shooting charts on my monitor). However a day later I noticed a VERY light and tiny scratch on the metal part of the focus ring (only visible under a certain angle of light), so I decided to get another copy as that slightly bothered me. And that's when I was somewhat disappointed. I tried other copies here and from another seller, and found issues with those.
One issue they had was the wobbly feel and sound of things moving within the lens when shaking it. I would expect this on cheaper lenses, but not on this especially having seen the first copy. One of the lenses was different enough from the first copy that I didn't even bother putting it on my camera. Just put it right back in the box and sent it back.
The other issue was auto-focus accuracy and calibration. Since 60D doesn't have in-camera focus adjustments, I really have to make sure that my body and lens are calibrated. And since my three other lenses are all fine, I have to assume that calibration on the additional Sigma copies I got was off. I kept switching back and forth between the initial copy and the candidates, and consistently observed that the results from the initial copy was much better.
Louder noise from moving elements combined with focus issue lead me to keep the initial copy. And now I feel very luck that I got that copy.

I bought this lens so I could take pictures of my grandchildren indoors without disturbing them with flash. I also wanted good focus isolation. I got all this and beautiful bokeh to boot. Since buying this lens I have gotten enough wow photographs to justify the cost. I am now looking forward to more Art series lenes from Sigma

I'd actually love to give this lens 4.5 stars! I love this lens! It is incredibly sharp! Like really, really sharp. Even in incredibly low light. There is no CA even at 1.4, which I just love. And no barrel distortion, which is way cool. I love it more than the Canon L series 35mm, which is saying alot. That's a fantastic lens. The only drawback is that the bokeh is quite as pretty and it's not weather resistant, but it's cheaper. So there. I'm incredibly happy with this lens and would buy it again.

I shoot a mix of glamour/boudoir under one company and weddings/engagements under another.
This lens is absolutely fantastic - it require a little microadjustment, but once I dialed it in, it became a game changer and the favorite bit of kit that I have. The colors are vibrant and gorgeous, the sharpness is second to none, and my clients are routinely impressed by the shots from this lens mounted to my 5D Mark III.
Overall, this 35 will keep pace with or pass any Canon L primes I've shot with - just an amazing buy!

I bought this lens for a trip to Japan (that I am currently still on). With me I packed, a 24mm, a 50mm, a 70-200, an 85mm (all Canon) and of course, my new Sigma 35mm. Ten days into my trip, my Sigma hasn't come off my camera.
If you are a fan of the 35mm focal length, this should be your first purchase. Strong build, fast autofocus, and exceptional image clarity.
Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras:
I have used my Canon 35mm f/1.4L for quite some time and somehow I just feel like it's pretty soft compared to my 50L and 85L. After hearing all the reviews about this Sigma 35mm f/1.4 I decided to give it a shot. I was totally blown away by how sharp the lenses is at f/1.4! Plus it costs way less than the Canon 35L. I do notice there are two very minor drawbacks thou. First, totally haven't tested it scientifically, I feel like the Sigma focuses a tiny bit slower than the Canon 35L. The other pretty noticeable issue is that it seems to vignette more than the Canon at wideopen. Anyway, I still give it a 5 stars because it's that awesome! Totally recommended!!

The barrier to entry for the 35mm 1.4 just fell. This lens is incredible. It's perfect, and it's priced to change the industry the way the 5Dii changed video.

I have used both the Nikkor 35 f1.4 and now the Sigma 35 f/1.4. I used a Nikon D800 body with both lenses extensively. I am telling you, please don't waste your money and go with the Nikkor, the Sigma IS THAT GOOD. Images are absolutely beautiful. The Sigma is built like a tank and the autofocus speed is just as fast if not faster than the Nikkor. Awaiting the availability of the Sigma USB dock for more flexibility.

This lens is awesome.
Two months ago I purchased a Canon 24-70mm 2.8 ii and while the technical performance of it was excellent, with a 2.8 max aperture, I got bored and the images dissapointed me. I returned the Canon to purchase this 35mm 1.4 Sigma. I don't really understand the use of a mid-range zoom anymore, and I'm doing weddings and candids. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges here, but trust me, for this range, go with a nice prime like this one. a 35mm on one body and the 70-200 on the other and you're golden.
About the sigma.
Wow. What a lens. This thing at least appears to be incredibly well built. The weight is perfect (less than a pro midrange zoom). It's fairly small. The hood fits great with a nice 'click.' What distortion? There is none. Colors just POP. Bokeh is beautiful. Sharpness is unbelievable. And, despite what some say, AF is quick and accurate (After Microadjust +6, no big deal). Vignetting is clearly present at 1.4, and I personally like that. Half of us end up adding some vignetting in post anyways.
I shot a 1yr/old birthday today and I got amazing shots with this. Had I used a 24-70, I would have gotten the same or maybe more shots, but none would blow me away as this lens does consistently.
Get one.

This lens is one of the sharpest ones I have ever owned. Excellent focus and images are very shARP even when stopped down to 1.4. Never had a Sigma before but this lens rates as good as other Canon L lenses I have. Expensive yes but well worth the cost in my book.
Highly recommened.

Comments about Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras:
Built like a tank and sharp as a tack. I've been interested in a fast "normal" prime for my crop sensor (previously a Rebel XT, now on a 60D) for some time to break me from the lazy habits of zoom lenses. This lens does not disapoint at all. The field of view on the 1.6x is great, the lens is sharp enough at f/1.4, and super sharp at f/2.8. I haven't done any true head-to-head comparisons, but I feel it is slightly softer that my Canon 85mm f/1.8, but that may not be the case in reality. At a price well below Canon's 35L and not much higher than the slower f/2 IS, it's a no-brainer. Complaints? If i had to nitpick, I'd say that the focus is a tad slower than I expected. The manual focus ring is a bit stiff, but I imagine that will change with use.
