Comments about Epson DC-20 Document Camera (White):

I'm using the camera to record myself drawing, and even though there is a little lag between the movement of my hand and what I see on the external monitor, the video is still smooth at 30 fps.
Having a document camera as a dedicated video recorder is more practical and portable to me than having a video camera rigged up to do the same job (I had that setup before and it was more trouble than it was worth, with the camera mounted on a ceiling jig and hooked to an external monitor.).
My main problem with this document camera is that you cannot do a custom white balance and freeze it, nor can you keep a fixed exposure level. Everytime I move my hand in and out of a drawing, the white balance and exposure changes. For art instruction, that is a problem.
I still think a document camera is a better solution than a rigged up video camera.
Auto-exposure assumes that the average light of a scene is some shade of mid-grey. That means that even white paper looks grey no matter how much light I add. There is an exposure override, but I still cannot achieve the white I can with a video camera. In fact, I have decided to do my demonstrations on gray paper and add white highlights to my drawings to reduce the problem. I hope Epson reads my review and corrects the problem in the future, but I sure wish there would be some firmware update that I could use to solve my problem. After all, this is the top of the line document camera for Epson.
If I'm doing a watercolor painting, then the continuous white balance becomes an additional problem, because the colors are continuously being balanced to mid-gray... (or white). Just bringing my hand into the field of view changes the white balance.
I still love my document camera; unfortunately, I don't feel like I could produce professional quality training videos with it, but I will definitely be creating plenty of YouTube videos soon.
