Product Highlights
  • Helps to Eliminate Reflections and Glare
  • Reduces Haze in Landscapes
  • Greater Color and Tonal Saturation
  • 8-Layer Multi-Coating
  • Thin Frame
  • Optical Glass

The Hoya 77mm HD2 Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter has an 8-layer multi-coating for very high average light transmission of 99.35%. It is constructed from optical glass and features a thin frame.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Has an 8-layer multi-coating for very high average light transmission of 99.35%.
Constructed from hardened optical glass to increase strength and durability.
Thin frame.
Water- and oil-repellent and scratch- and stain-resistant, making for easy cleaning.

Comments about Hoya 77mm HD2 Circular Polarizer Filter:

This is a really nice and well made polarizer. I haven't had any issues with it and the clarity is awesome. I haven't gotten to really play around with it too much, the weather hasn't been very sunny. But from what i have seen the polarization effect isn't as pronounced as I would have liked. But that could be my fault more than the filter. I was just hoping for more drastic polarization. In any case, the Hoya HD/HD2 lines are the only real filters i use, and i really like them overall. I'm sure i'll get a lot of use out of this CP and look forward to the weather clearing up and having more time to experiment with it.

Hoya is top of the line. This is great to pull out those landscape colors, see into water, and cut the reflections from shinny objects.

Comments about Hoya 77mm HD2 Circular Polarizer Filter:

Twice I have had this product literally come apart. The threading separated from the parts. The first time Hoya admitted they had a problem and replaced the product the second time they ignored me. The first occasion the threading fell off and would not mount to the camera lens. The second time the threading came off where the 2 parts are connected and I now have a non functional separate 2 parts polarizer.

If you are in the market for a multi-coated polarizer, you may wish to consider other manufacturers.

Comments about Hoya 77mm HD2 Circular Polarizer Filter:

The Hoya HD2 New series of filters, these are filters made with extremely high quality optical glass that is chemically altered during its molten state to become FOUR times stronger than the glass would be otherwise. The "HD2" in the Hoya HD2 Circular Polarizer filter by Hoya name doesn't stand for "High Definition" but rather stands for "Hardened." I'm dropping steel weights on the glass, holding the filter in their hands and then banging the filter's glass into the edge of a table, These filters are the toughest thing you can buy to protect your lens short of a lens cap.The HD2 filters have 8-layer anti-reflective multi-coating that is water and oil repellent as well as scratch and stain resistant. The filter ring itself is also one of the "thin frame" style rings. which means you can use these filters on wide-angle lenses without fear of vignetting.Bottom line, the Hoya HD2 Circular Polarizer filter by Hoya are the only filters I'm willing to put on my expensive lenses.
