The Gitzo GT2542T Series 2 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber 4-Section Tripod combines compactness and light weight with strength and stability to support up to an amazing 26.46 lb with absolute rigidity. The Traveler series tripod features the stability and size of a Mountaineer Series 2 tripod, to serve the high-end photographer, bird watcher, or videographer who needs an easily portable support with no compromise in performance. The 4-section legs turn 180° and completely enclose the center column and the locking mechanism, for a very short folded length of less than 17".

The GT2542T is composed of advanced 6x carbon fiber, a material that guarantees structural strength and flexion rigidity as it absorbs vibration. This last function is crucial for keeping long telephoto lenses, video lenses, and spotting scopes absolutely stable, and so the 2.93-lb tripod is the perfect support for long-distance nature shots for which the smallest shake means the difference between capturing a bird or other flighty creature centered within the frame and missing the shot entirely.

The redesigned G-Lock leg-locking mechanism also contributes to the tripod's rigidity, achieving a 20% increase over previous-generation technology. Moreover, as the tripod's load approaches its 26.46-lb maximum, the locking mechanism actually increases in strength. With G-Lock, leg locking is stronger, safer, and faster.

G-Lock
The locking mechanism has been completely redesigned in order to achieve a 20% increase in rigidity, faster operation and stronger, safer locking. G-Lock's special design also provides a 'gravity lock' effect: the higher the load applied vertically to the leg, the stronger the lock.
Rapid Center Column
The center-column locking collar above the tripod chassis makes it easier to adjust the column quickly. A grooved design prevents rotation of the column and improves system stability
Reversible Center Column
The rapid column can easily be inverted for an alternative shooting angle or low level macro work.
Counterweight Hook
This built-in accessory allows you to hang a stabilizing weight (e.g. a full camera bag or a sand/water bag) from the bottom of the tripod center column. Useful with long, heavy lenses, on uneven ground or in windy conditions.
Anti Leg Rotation
A redesigned Anti Leg Rotation system means the tripod can be opened in less than 15 seconds. Simply loosen all the twist locks on each leg at the same time, then pull the leg down and tighten the locks individually.
Gitzo 6x Carbon Fiber
Gitzo 6x guarantees structural strength, flexion rigidity, and great vibration absorption properties. The performance of this multilayer design is unique and inimitable thanks to the advanced aerospace production technology and the exclusive inner structure. It is the highest-density tube that's 100% made of top-quality ultra-thin (7μm) carbon fibers – a 28mm tube contains 1.5 million carbon fibers

Comments about Gitzo GT2542T Series 2 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber 4-Section Tripod:

As one might expect from Gitzo, a superb tripod--light, compact, and sturdy. Highly recommended for travel, for cameras up to medium format size (I was using a Mamiya 7, with no problems at all).

Comments about Gitzo GT2542T Series 2 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber 4-Section Tripod:

I recently bought the GT2542T Series 2 traveler Carbon Fiber tripod, and in all honesty, it is excellent for my needs. On that topic, my major use for a tripod is when I'm doing landscape photography or night photography.

I have been using a Manfrotto 055xprob which is a larger, and heavier tripod for almost 5 years now. It is an excellent tripod (coupled with a 7D+battery pack + 410 manfrotto junior gear head), but as the weight of my equipment has increased, I've been looking for a lightweight tripod to carry along on trips that require travel/hiking.

After some research online, I identified a couple of tripods that I wanted to see in person before I made the decision. The Gitzo 2542t immediately stood out for three reasons:

          1. low weight (almost half of that of the manfrotto 055 xprob)
          2. carbon fiber build (so much easier to handle in somewhat cold temperatures, although I will be interested in finding out how this works out in sub zero temperatures)
          3. small size (if you take off the head, it fits in carry on luggage)

The locking mechanism (twist lock) is quick and easy to implement. Further, it is very stable. And, despite it being a lightweight, the camera did withstand moderately windy conditions very well! This tripod is adequate for the heaviest combination of camera + lens that I have used (7D+battery pack+RRS BH-40 ballhead + 70-200 f2.8).

When the camera (7D + battery pack) is mounted on a tripod head (RRS BH-40/ Manfrotto 410 junior gear head), and the center column is fully extended, the eyepiece reaches my eyelevel (about 5' 8" or so). This is an issue worth consideration for tall people.

All in all, it is a great tripod. I would recommend it, if you have similar needs.

Comments about Gitzo GT2542T Series 2 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber 4-Section Tripod:

I really like this tripod! I travel a lot and needed something that was light, but supported my Nikon D800 and various lenses. This and a ball head really does the trick. I can fold it up and put it in a suitcase without taking up a lot of weight and space. Now, I don't leave home without it!
