Comments about Profoto RFi 3.0 x 4.0' Softbox:

Very versatile, durable, and great light quality. This soft box is worth the money and the size is perfect for head-shots or full body. I love the soft light that this puts out compared to an umbrella. It does add a lot of weight to the mono light (D1) that I put it on and requires a heavy duty boom arm if you're going to extend it. The weight is due too the excellent build quality. My next purchase will be the 5' octobox.

Comments about Profoto RFi 3.0 x 4.0' Softbox:

The Profoto 3'x4' soft box provides nice even light and is a happy match with their B1 and D1 series of strobes. It requires a Speedring adapter to mount. The soft box comes with color-coded mounting rods per the Profoto mounting system, as well as a (typically Profoto) oversized carrying case. Thoughtfully, Profoto prints their logo on the case exterior as well as the size of the soft box in highly legible script, helping you find the right bag when you are looking for it. Last week I shot a series of abstract sculptures that were about 3' high and had rough surfaces, and ironically found the light from this soft box to be a bit too soft and too even. The sculptures needed harder light to create textural shadows. So, this box is too soft/big for some applications. It would work well for simulated window light, and would be ideal for portrait, boudoir, or wedding work, or studio tabletop work. It's probably a bit too large to be powered by a Speedlite outdoors although Profoto is happy to sell you a Speedlite mounting ring that fits. If you are shopping for a first modifier, I'd recommend using the smaller 3' Octabox as it gives round catchlights and can be set up to be a bit more directional and shaping. Used for people, this is ideally more of a 3/4 or full-body light. Its light tends to be very soft and wrap-around (flattening, not flattering) for head shots.

Comments about Profoto RFi 3.0 x 4.0' Softbox:

I bought this softbox because I was looking for one that would work in four different ways: 1) with my Profoto Acute flash heads, 2) with the adjustable RFi adapter for my Canon 600 RT flashes, 3) with my PCB Einsteins and 4) with my 500 watt lamped Arrilite 1000 tungsten floods (RFi boxes are rated for heat resistance up to 500 watt tungsten, if common sense precautions are observed). The only softboxes I could find that fulfilled all of these requirements, at any but astronomical prices, were the Profoto RFi boxes. The 3' x 4' size is a good one for most general use, relatively light weight, made very well with nice slightly heavy fabric and well sewn seams, plus works just fine with all my flash gear, including the Canon 600's with the truly pro level constructed Profoto RFi Speedlight Speedring adapter (B&H #PRRFISLSR, $[$]). I can use this softbox for very many applications, which makes its high, but not outrageous, price an actual bargain. The shape of the box is quite shallow, so it can fit into tight places, the light spread is soft and very even with the inner diffuser in place and it transmits light without losing too much to the baffling and diffusion. It is a little difficult to initially put together, but it gets easier with time and repetition. The aluminum (I think) poles are sturdy and well made, but the steep angle of the bend - to make the box fairly shallow - may put enough force on them to eventually make them less resistant to bending and make the box sag a little; I'll just to have to see. Right now, everything is perfect. The way the poles are threaded into the fabric is a little different than with other top-end boxes. There isn't a full-length pocket through the length of the seams of the silver-clad fabric into which the poles are inserted to give the box its shape. Instead, there is a shorter "loop" of a fabric pocket about a third of the way down the length of each seam, into which the poles are first slid before ending up at the very end of the seam, inserted into a very sturdy pocket of double-layered cloth. It's different, but it works well and looks like it will last.

Comments about Profoto RFi 3.0 x 4.0' Softbox:

After several lower quality softboxes I purchased Profoto. Great investment. The entire package is excellent, from storage case to the adjustable speed ring (separate) Easy to assemble and the construction I don't feel is matched by others.

Comments about Profoto RFi 3.0 x 4.0' Softbox:

Coming from shooting with mostly photoflex boxes before, this Profoto RFi box is a huge improvement! It's much sturdier, the fabric is thicker, the rods are stiffer and don't bend out of shape as much. The rods get much thicker (probably about a 1/2") up towards the speed ring connector — right where all my old rods use to get bent out of shape. The color coded rods are a nice touch.

The rods go through a tiny loop about 1/4 of the way from the top of the box, then through a velcro loop (that the inner diffuser attaches to), and then into the corner pockets. The corner pockets are only about an inch long though, so sometimes the rods will come out while you're building the box. Not really an issue if you put these together and leave them up in a studio, but I could see it getting annoying on location if you're constantly taking them apart and putting them together (it seems to be the biggest problem on the larger boxes like this and the 1x4 and 1x6 strips).

Comments about Profoto RFi 3.0 x 4.0' Softbox:

I use this with a profoto D1. It does what it's supposed to do. The construction seems good. The black part is a thick almost like canvas material. The interior is a beaded silver. It has one interior diffuser that attaches to the four corners via velcro. The outer diffuser attaches with velcro around the entire perimeter. It isn't the easiet thing to assemble and disassemble. There are four robust steel rods with a rounded aluminum tip that slides into a pocket in each corner of the front of the softbox. The other end has an aluminum shaft that goes into the port in the speedring. It doesn't come with a speedring, thats a seperate thing. They're both color coded. The best way that I've found to take it apart is to push the opposite corner into the floor a little bit and push the rod opposite that, which would be in your hand in towards the speedring while pulling the black pocket that the rod goes into the other way. It puts a little bend in the rod but it's the only way I've been able to take it apart. You'll figure it out. It all comes in a nice bag with a handle for transport/storage. It's expensive but you get what you pay for. I'll be getting another when they come back in stock.
