The Artist Transport from Avid is a compact media controller enabling project navigation and precise edit control with one hand. The Artist Transport connects to your edit system via Ethernet cable, and interfaces with a large array of available audio and video software via EUCON, HUI, and Mackie Control Protocols. From rapid shuttling to fine editing control, the weighted data wheel and springloaded shuttle ring provide you with both an analog feel and precise control over your editing timeline.

The six programmable soft keys and seven programmable edit control buttons allow you to configure your Artist Transport to suit your needs and workflow. The integrated keypad provides for quick numeric entry, and can be additional programmable soft keys. Weighing only 2.6 lb, with a smaller footprint than a 13" laptop, this unit is compact, portable and good for use with a laptop or a fully fitted editing studio.

Timecode, as well as soft key functions can be displayed on the integrated OLED display. The Artist Transport can be combined with other control surfaces in the Artist series for additional controls, and the modular design allows you to customize your control panel layout.

One-Hand Operation
The Artist Transport is designed to give you customizable editing and project navigation functionality while only needing to use one hand. The controller interfaces with both Audio and Video editing applications, providing transport controls, shuttle, playback, fast forward, rewind, and more.

The Artist Transport can be programmed with macro functions, edit functions, and can seamlessly navigate between projects, applications and even workstations without using your mouse or keyboard.

Control Protocol and Functionality

EUCON is an advanced protocol to communicate with software over an Ethernet connection at over 250x the speed of MIDI, allowing responsive communication with or control of the below:
Data/Jog wheel
Shuttle ring
Programmable buttons
Transport controls
Numeric keypad
OLED display

EUCON allows the Artist Transport to have deeply integrated control of applications such as the below:
Pro Tools
Avid Media Composer
Avid Symphony
Final Cut Pro
Apple Color
Autodesk Smoke for Mac
FilmLight Baselight

Note: See Specifications for information on software version compatibility with EUCON Protocols.
The Artist Transport comes with 6 programmable soft keys. These can be programmed to perform application specific functions such as: Keyboard shortcuts, Macro Commands, Editing, Project and Program navigation. Soft Keys can also be programmed to assign functions to both the data/jog wheel and the shuttle ring on the fly.
Programmable Adjustable Data/Jog Wheel
The Data/Jog Wheel is optically encoded for responsiveness, and weighted for good hand feel. The sensitivity of the wheel can be adjusted and set either globally or programmed specifically via software.
Programmable Adjustable Shuttle Ring
The springloaded Shuttle Ring sits at the base of the Data/Jog wheel providing variable fast forwarding or rewinding through the timeline. Releasing the shuttle returns it to zero and stops shuttling. The sensitivity of the wheel can be adjusted and set either globally or programmed specifically via software.
HUI and Mackie Control Protocol
The Artist Transport supports HUI and Mackie Control Protocols over its Ethernet connection for legacy software applications that don't support EUCON.

Note: Not all EUCON functionality may be available using HUI and Mackie Control Protocols.

Comments about Avid Artist Transport Editing Console:

I installed the Avid Artist Transport in my studio about a week ago and have been totally satisfied with my decision to purchase. As a right-hander I found it most useful on the left side of the desk - leaving my right hand for the mouse. The combination of the Transport and mouse is great. The Transport is an extremely flexible piece of hardware, and can be programmed to accommodate your own personal workflow - though there is a learning curve involved in setting up all the assignable buttons and knobs. I have found that the more time I spend thoughtfully programming the Transport, the more powerful it becomes. I am using it in combination with an Artist Mix, and the two units create a great compact control surface for Pro Tools v10 - the Eucon protocol is a giant step up from trying to control PT with HUI.

Comments about Avid Artist Transport Editing Console:

My first editing system was a VHS-to-VHS linear editing console with the old jog/shuttle wheel that you'd punch-in to switch between the two modes. When I first started investigating this product, my inner middle-schooler wanted to recapture those days of jogging and shuttling through old VHS decks.

I've only been using it for about a week now, and I have to say that I really do enjoy it, though it is something of a luxury purchase. I can't really say whether this will ever be faster than the old mouse/keyboard combo, though in its favor it certainly looks impressive sitting at my workstation (e.g. impressing clients/producers.) I have also taken the added step of punching holes out of stick-it notes to create colored dots that I place over and under the buttons to create color associations with the functions of the buttons and that has helped me learn the device more quickly.

I do wish the console had one or two more buttons, or possibly a second shift key, as the current setup allows only 33 commands (my original list of commonly used commands included about 10-15 more actions.) It also seems silly that you have to activate the jog/shuttle mode with two of the buttons. Intuitively, I would have imagined that the jog/shuttle wheels would work out of the box, and nearly returned the device thinking it was defective when they didn't work immediately.

Another knock is that it seems rather temperamental. A few times I have accidentally put too much weight at the front, causing the device to buck up and down resulting in the device becoming frozen. The device does come with leg attachments that make it sturdier, but it felt awkward rocking the elevated surface.

A small thing, but I also wish it had a single slider. I can mostly use just this device when I edit, though editing sound levels of course still requires mouse input.

All in all, if you're willing to invest a little time to learn a new way of interacting with your NLE, or you want to make a statement to your clients that "I'm a serious editor," then I'd recommend this device. If you're about the "experience" of editing, I might also recommend this device as it makes editing feel more hands-on (getting your hands dirty, as they say.) If you're a small studio, or a pragmatic editor, I'd pass on it.
