Questions? Ask our experts:

The white MDR-NC8 Noise Canceling Headphones from Sony are active noise canceling headphones that are built for compact transport and comfort. Made for use on the subway, train, plane or at the office, the MDR-NC8s are designed to reduce ambient noise by up to 90% when the noise canceling circuitry is activated. The noise is reduced by a noise canceling circuit that senses outside noise with built-in microphones and sends an equal but opposite canceling signal to the headphones.

The MDR-NC8s boast 30mm drivers with neodymium magnets designed to allow for powerful bass and clear high frequency response. The lightweight (6.0oz), on-ear design aims to allow for comfortable listening over long periods of time. The ergonomically shaped, flexible earpads and the adjustable headband also contribute to a build designed for extended use during leisure and travel.

i bought these headphones for use on airplane flights. I found the noise-cancelling to be very disappointing. The noise canceling was minimal. I could barely discern a difference when in flight, between having the noise canceling on or off. It's nice that they work as headphones even when the noise-canceling is off, but I'm not impressed with the sound reproduction quality. It's pretty good for the price though.

I would not recommend these for serious noise-cancelling. I give it no less than three stars because you get what you pay for for the price. Plus, the ability to fold it up makes it easy to carry. It's also easy to tell the left and right earphones - good labels. Easy to replace battery.

It did hurt my left ear, but that may just be me.

Comments about MDR-NC8 Noise Canceling Headphones (Black):

I mostly use these on subway rides that last about 45 minutes. These headphones are exactly what I'd expect $30 noise cancellign headphones to do. I'm not sure how much noise they're cancelling, but they certainly don't make the train any worse than it is. The cable is very short, and they aren't the most comfortable fit ever, but I got used to them after a few hours. Sound quality is fine, again - these are $[$]headphones designed for using in noisy environments. They do just that.

These were purchased for use on my computer, they are quite comfortable, light weight, fold compactly and have good sound quality for the purpose. They can be used without the noise cancelation feature, or it can be switched on easaly. The Noise feature uses one AAA batery and the first battery came with the phones.

Light and easily stowable they're good to travel with. Comparable to more expensive headphones I use to edit. Noise cancelling switch comes in handy to drown out the hum of a plane or noisy neighbors.

Nice headphones for $. People are complaining that they suck compared to Bose and Beats. Those people are snobs and must be willing to pay $ for headphones. I'm not. Sound quality probably a 7 out of 10. Not bad but not fantastic. They were a little on the quite side yes, but they were fine on the two airplane rides I took them for. Noise cancelling feature actually did drowned out the engine noise better than I expected. I would say GREAT headphones for $!

Comments about MDR-NC8 Noise Canceling Headphones (Black):

Noise canceling headphones should, at a minimum, cancel noise. When you put these uncomfortable headphones on, they muffle some noise. When you turn on the noise reduction feature, if you pay very, very close attention, you will notice that a tiny bit more noise vanishes. It's easy to miss, though.

I wore them for about an hour into the first leg of a flight, and finally ripped them off. They were hot and sticky, and kept me from falling asleep.

At my layover I tried some Bose NR headsets--now those are magic! They had a recording of a jet noise, and the instant you turn on the NR feature, all of that noise vanished.

As headphones, the sound quality wasn't very good, certainly not worth the price and the uncomfortable design.

                      I returned the Sonys.

The quality of sound is not amazing, but on the box you can read up to 90% of noise cancelling... The reality is that I am not able to feel a difference between NC on or off.
So this model is cheap, but doesn't deliver what I expected at all

I bought these as a replacement for an older set that got stolen. THe NC8 is a big disappointment. Very poor ear fit, pressure from the headset causes the ears to turn red. Sound cancellation is weak compaired to previous set... did very little to dampen the sound of the plane. My previous set made a world of difference. DON'T BUY THESE!

Comments about MDR-NC8 Noise Canceling Headphones (Black):

i bought these headphones for use on airplane flights.

I can tell no difference between noise cancelling and not. It sounds like fuzz with some clicking. If they cost more than $[$]I would consider the hassel to return. I'm keeping and using as regular low quality headphones - you get what you pay for...

Bought this as a gift for my teenage daughter who had her eyes set on far too expensive headphones by Ludacris. She loves them. The white color is "cool" and the sound is quite good considering the price. The sound is better without noise reduction, but when there is no sound, noise reduction can help reduce ambient noise by playing a sound that mimics waves.
