If you have a Canon camera with a smaller-size APS-C sensor and EF-S mount, then the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM from Sigma is an incredibly versatile lens that is a real jack-of-all-trades lens you can carry in any situation. With a focal length spanning from a wide-angle 18mm up to a 250 mm telephoto zoom, with macro capabilities to boot, Sigma's 18-250mm could easily be your camera's first all-in-one lens, or a great replacement for several smaller lenses that you're looking to consolidate.

Sigma redesigned the optical and structural design of this lens in order to achieve a relatively compact size, at 4.0" long, as well as a close minimum focusing distance of 13.8" for macro photography. Their Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) construction maintains the structure of the lens, with little variation despite changing temperatures. The lens also incorporates a brass-made bayonet mount, to further reinforce the lenses durability and resistance to wear and tear over time.

The minimum focusing distance is the same throughout the focal length of the entire zoom range, and provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9. As an added benefit over fixed focal length macro lenses, the size and framing of subjects can quickly and easily be adjusted by rotating the zoom ring. For even further convenience, at each focusing distance on the side of the lens barrel, the maximum magnification ratio is also displayed.

The 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM has been built with Sigma's exclusive Optical Stabilizer (OS) function. This provides approximately 4-stops of effective camera correction, allowing for lower-light shooting, or greater sharpness in adequate lighting situations. This benefit is even carried into the macro range of photography, where the slightest bump or blur could easily ruin an image. This stabilizer is also adaptive to moving subjects, detecting your movement as you pan the camera and lens, offering effective correction there as well.

For high image quality, you know you've got to have high quality glass, and Sigma has incorporated their Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element into the 18-250mm. In addition to the SLD element, three aspherical lenses, including a double-sided aspherical lens, have been used in the lens' construction--offering excellent correction of color aberration, for better clarity and quality of images throughout the zoom range.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been employed to reduce flare and ghosting with this lens. This makes it resistant to strong incident light, such as backlight behind a subject, providing sharper, high contrast images even shooting into a light source. To prevent internal reflections from occurring, the included petal-type lens hood can be attached in order to block out extraneous light.

For a lens that offers a wide-angle to telephoto focal length, the ability to zoom-in with macro photography, and provides Optical Stabilization built-in, Sigma's 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM made for Canon cameras is more than a match. Whether you're on a macro product shoot, a walk in the park, or have a wedding to go to, this lens will help you shoot high quality images in any situation.

Possibilities as Wide as its Zoom Range
Going from an 18mm wide-angle lens in the park, to an 85mm portrait lens at a wedding, and later attaching a heavy 250mm lens for wildlife or sport photography means you'll have to carry pounds of gear around with you, by hand or on your back, all day long. With the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM, you won't have to risk dust entering your Canon camera body, dropping one of your lenses as the bride's aunt runs into you with a glass of wine, or fumbling to switch to your zoom lens as you watch an eagle soar away--missing opportunities because you had the wrong lens at the time
In Close, or Wide Open
Not only is the zoom range excellent for a variety of situations, but the focus range is also conducive to macro photography--with the added benefit of zooming in on the tiniest textures or creatures. With a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 you can get an up-close and personal shot of the petals of a flower, then immediately zoom out and catch a group photo before anyone blinks
Compact Construction
Incorporating double-sided aspherical lenses, and redesigning the lenses construction, Sigma has made improvements in keeping this lens at a relatively compact size, yet still achieving an outstanding zoom range. The filter thread diameter has been reduced to 62mm--while, with a 13x zoom range, the length of the lens still remains a mere 3.4" long
Tough Exterior, yet Quality Interior
While the design and construction of the lens has kept it relatively compact, the new Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material has been used to keep it strong and resistant to weathering effects. In addition, a brass made bayonet mount reinforces the strength applied to the surface of the lens. The combination of these features leads to reduced contractility with changing temperatures, a higher quality of lens construction, and allows for slimmer parts to be used--keeping it compact and strong
Holding Steady
Sigma has incorporated their unique Optical Stabilizer (OS) function that offers effectively 4-stops of correction. This makes it possible to compensate for camera shake even in the close-up macro range of photography where a small blur can be detrimental to an image. Even when photographing moving subjects, such as those in sports, the OS function automatically detects the camera's movement and offers effective correction for potential camera shake. The stabilizer's effectiveness does gradually decrease as the shooting distance becomes shorter, however, and is not available on Sony or Pentax camera mounts
Flares, Aberrations, and Ghosting. Oh my!
Everybody says you should invest in your glass, and Sigma's 18-250mm provides just the way for you to do that. With three Aspherical glass elements that offer correction for distortion. Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements that provide optimum color correction and sharpness, as well as a Super Multi-Layer lens coating that reduces flare and ghosting. This array of optical features assure high image quality throughout the entire zoom range, and widely varying lighting situations

Absolute the best superzoom out there today, period. Unlike other superzooms, this lens is sharp throughout the entire range(sharpness drops a bit at the most telephoto end). I had the Sigma 17-50mm OS. Was planning to get a telephoto and a macro lens. Decided to sell the 17-50mm once I heard Sigma was coming out with a new 18-250mm Macro OS. It's not a true macro lens, but for closeups it destroys all other superzooms. I haven't experience any lens creep. The Tamron 18-270mm PZD VC had some major lens creep. I did not like the Canon 18-200mm. It was bulky and heavy. The Sigma 18-250mm Macro OS is small and lightweight. Only con I really have is that the focus hunts on occasion. Check me out on Flickr.

I bought this lens to be used mostly as a travel all-in-one to go with my T3i, and have been using a Tiffen UV filter on it from day 1. After comparing directly to the Canon 17-55 F2.8, I immediately noticed that when I took a picture from the same position with the 17-55@55, the subject filled ~1/3 of the frame compared to the full frame on this Sigma@250, which didn't add up. A few weeks later I had the chance to compare directly to the Canon EF 75-300, which confirmed my suspicions and the claim by Microdevthat this isn't really a 18-250 lens. I took a few pictures of a framed photo on the opposite wall using both lenses and have found that this 18-250's tele end is equivalent to the Canon 75-300 at ~165. This is ridiculous! It's as if I bought a 55" TV and in the box was a 32"! This alone made me seriously regret buying this lens, and if it didn't mean incurring over $100 in losses (shipping both ways + border/customs/handling fees), I'd return it.

Aside from that, some other issues with the lens is the very noticable vignetting at the wide end compared to the kit 18-55 (both wearing UV filters, but not hoods), and the spotty autofocus: I've had intermittent issues where it just couldn't get focus and kept going back and forth in a loop. Focusing in live-view is a lot worse than the kit lens as well. Also, the lens makes a quiet but definitely audible and worrying noise constantly while the camera is on (sounds a bit like a 2.5" hard drive spinning and seeking). I haven't been able to identify the source of the noise since it persists regardless of whether the autofocus or OS is on or off.

Not to sound all negative, the sharpness seems to be ok, and there aren't any plainly visible abberations. I really like the "macro" usability even if it isn't a real macro lens, and the bokeh is as good as I've encountered in my so far brief forray in photography. The build quality looks and feels solid, and I appreciate the free hood.

All in all, I'm perfectly happy with the pictures it takes, but at the end of the day, the only reason I bought this lens was for its wide zoom range- and I was scammed in this regard. I've attached the pictures to back-up my claims against this lens. Hopefully, this review will warn others...

I bought this one for handle just one lens in all situations: hikings, vacations, etc.

It is good for me, previously I had a Tamron 70-300 VC and for my the stabilization of Tamron is better than Sigma, but Sigma is good enough.

Good size, good weight, great purchase for your all-in-one.

This is my one-lens solution for my Canon EOS camera. No more lugging three lenses so I have the right zoom (and missing the show while changing lenses). No more sore shoulders from carrying all those lenses. It's just what I wanted and I've had no problems with it. Catching a [$] rebate was really great!

I originally purchased this lens to take photos at youth baseball and softball. It has quickly become my favorite all around use lens. Focus is fast and sharp and the light weight makes it a lot better to carry. Really wish I had bought this lens sooner. Low light perfromance is a little lacking but that is to be expected. All in all I am very happy with this lens escpecally in photographing sports.

Comments about Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM for Canon EF-S Mount:

I am an amateur photographer/soccer mom. I have used my first DSLR for two years now (Canon Rebel T4i), and until now I only used the kit lens (EFS 18-55mm) that came with it. I went to B&H looking for a lens better suited for capturing action shots on the field.

My excellent sales guy steered me to this lens. He was sensitive to showing me a lens that was appropriate for my needs without being more than I needed or too expensive. At first he stated that this lens is the one lens for everything. I called him on that--even I know that there is no one lens for every shot. Perhaps a more accurate description is that this lens covers the needs of the kit lens plus a better zoom.

This lens really shines at max zoom. The photos I've taken so far at shorter focal lengths don't seem any different than what I've done with my standard lens, and there's no surprise there. But the photos at max zoom are pretty great. Granted it took 400 shots to get two really good ones--but I'm getting there!

The only complaint of this lens is lens creep. The lens itself is so heavy that the weight of the front element pulls the whole lens forward. There is a lock that keeps the lens at the chosen zoom, but it's annoying to constantly flip a switch back and forth every time I want to zoom out. For now the lens is a minor annoyance, but the google tells me that it may get more pronounced as the zoom ring's friction starts to wear with use. The google also tells me a simple solution--a black hair elastic tucked into the gap (I'll let you google that solution yourself).

Comments about Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM for Canon EF-S Mount:

If you can only take one lens with you, this is the one to take. It offers a wide range - from wide angle to telephoto and the macro focusing is fantastic. This is a very solidly-built lens - which means that it is not light. But if you liked the ruggedness of the old FD lenses, you'll like this one. The focusing is super-fast and the image stabilization is a nice bonus.

As I'm new in this photgraphy world I was looking for a lens which I can use in a daily basis without changing lenses periodically. In this point, this lens it's just what I need in this moment, as you can take a panorama foto as also as zoom photo. It has a sharp resolution even in zoom. HSM system it's a plus.

Comments about Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM for Canon EF-S Mount:

If you want a good 25x zoom lens for a steal, this is the lens for you. You can travel with it and it will give reasonably good pictures for the widest variety of subjects. However, with everything there is a tradeoff. While this lens can almost do it all including macro, one thing it suffers from is blurry focus. And even in focus, the pictures are often soft zoomed it. So I find that this lens leads to a great percentage of rejects. If the percentage of keepers is your main concern, this is not the lens for you. However, if you want to carry just one lens and be done with it (and be prepared to shoot extra frames), then this is probably the best deal on the planet.

I got this lens for a DisneyWorld vaction trip to replace lugging around multiple HEAVY lens. This lens is very compact yet has a tiny amount of heft to show me has higher quality than kit lens. I purchased through B&H for [$]. Can't beat the quality for this cheap. Pics seem pretty sharp. Perfect size and range for this kind of trip. The extreme tele end actually seems less than the 250mm claimed, but it was sufficient for replacing multiple lens. Great value for this lens.
