The Acratech GP-ss Ballhead has the ability to function as a gimbal head and as a panoramic head, providing you with incredible positioning flexibility and stability for your equipment. Gimbal heads are desirable when shooting with telephoto lenses, especially when following moving objects.

The GP-ss Ballhead is designed with a small diameter base diameter of 2.08" to allow it to be used with travel-type tripods where the legs fold around the tripod head. The smaller base diameter allows the tripod legs to fold more compactly.

Even when using your tripod on rocky, uneven terrain the GP-ss Ballhead allows you to pan parallel to the horizon, eliminating the need to carry a separate leveling base to create accurate panoramic images.

        Comments about Acratech GP-ss Ballhead:

Backpacking and hiking to some amazing landscape photography locations are my most enjoyable pursuits. On a recent trip, my previous ball head decided to lose fasteners "again!" This certainly impacted my ability to image some sharp photographs at locations I worked very hard to reach. In the evening I was stacking rocks and leveling them with pebbles to hold my camera steady for long exposures. The Acratech GP-ss is fantastic for my backpacking requirements. The fasteners have limits so I don't lose them due to vibration or contact with thick brush. The GP-ss is lighter than my previous ballhead and it serves multiple purposes as a traditional ballhead, or you can reverse it on the tripod (with help from a supplied allen wrench) to level your platform easily for panoramas. I like this a lot! The design is open, so easy to clean. It holds my 6D and my backpacking lens (24-105mm F4L IS USM) solidly.

          Comments about Acratech GP-ss Ballhead:

I was looking for a ball head that was light weight, functional and sturdy for use in all outdoor environments. I like that the ball head is wide open and can't trap grit, sand and debris to jam the head. This ball head has a lower profile than the others and is lighter than my Manfrotto pistol grip. That it can function as a gimbal head is icing on the cake! I also have used it for panorama shots and like that I can easily adjust the tension to pan, it is quite a lot like my fluid dampening Gitzo…BUT…much more functional!I LOVE that the the knobs at the same levels are different sizes so I don't have to look at which knob I am loosening, I can do it by feel. I stuck with the knobs over the lever because I am constantly hoisting the camera on the tripod and cutting through brush, a lever may hang on a limb and loosen the clamp and I would loose the camera. I use a M4/3 camera system so I don't have to worry about half the weight that full frame cameras do. I do not think this ball head would have any problem handling full frame cameras with long and heavy telephoto lenses.I have not found any down side to this ball head at this time. I am very, very pleased with my decision to purchase this ball head.

            Comments about Acratech GP-ss Ballhead:

I needed a photographic ballhead for a Manfrotto 755XB fitted with a video fluid head. Of course, the number of ballheads available is overwhelming, and my budget wasn't. A quick call to B&H's product professional put me on to this ballhead, from a company I wasn't all that familiar with. However, the rep assured me that it would fit my requirements: lightweight, reasonably-priced, and well-made. This ballhead is all that and more. Nicely designed and easy to install on my tripod (once I remembered those three little set-screws on the mount), I couldn't be more pleased. I can see myself purchasing other products from this company, if the build quality of this item is representative of their other products. If you don't have a mounting plate already, you'll need one, either an Arca-Swiss Universal plate, or you can purchase a camera-specific plate made by Acratech (the advantage of which is a little raised lip on ones side of the plate that keeps your camera from moving on the plate).

If you're in the market for a well-priced, well-made ballhead, I recommend you give the Acratech GP-ss a look.

              Comments about Acratech GP-ss Ballhead:

Fits perfectly well with my GItzo 1542T. Lightweight and it does all the functions I expected it to perform especially the Gimbel option. Best of all its made in the USA, 1 kg weight and easier and simple to use.

                Comments about Acratech GP-ss Ballhead:

                - "Open" ballhead design affords freedom of movement but also prevents dirt accumulation around or under ball.- Versatile design allows for 3 functions including "normal" use, use as a gimbal head and use as a levelling panoramic head.- Refined design is complemented by high-quality machining and finish.- The only reservations I have are when the ballhead is placed in an inverse position for panoramic photography...altho it works fine, I have a paranoid nagging feeling the inverse position is not as secure as it could be. And the bubble level is not easily viewable once a camera is secured on the quick release plate.

                  Comments about Acratech GP-ss Ballhead:

This is a beautifully designed and manufactured ballhead by Acratech. I've owned the GV2. But this head is perfect for tripods with legs that fold back 180º for travel and back-packing--it is much more compact. The uniqueness of this head is you can quickly remove the QR clamp (arca-swiss compatible) and fasten it onto the pan base. Then one mounts the head upside-down so leveling is achieved above the ballhead. No matter how askew the tripod legs are placed, leveling is done in a moment, thereby stitched panoramas can be created with precision.

There are many knob controls -- pan, ballhead, tension, clamp. For the non-pro, that can be a bit fussy and hard to master.
                  Note:
The base of this head is 53mm, suitable for mounting on tripods with a narrow base width.

I paired this ballhead with a Gitzo 1541T and couldn't be happier. Having owned the GP version for my larger tripod, I already new the quality that Acratech offers with their products and the GP-ss continues that tradition. I would not hesitate recommending this ballhead for a travel tripod, offering a small diameter base, in a solid lightweight smooth functioning ball head . Great job Acratech !
