The Acratech GP-ss Ballhead has the ability to function as a gimbal head and as a panoramic head, providing you with incredible positioning flexibility and stability for your equipment. Gimbal heads are desirable when shooting with telephoto lenses, especially when following moving objects.
The GP-ss Ballhead is designed with a small diameter base diameter of 2.08" to allow it to be used with travel-type tripods where the legs fold around the tripod head. The smaller base diameter allows the tripod legs to fold more compactly.
Even when using your tripod on rocky, uneven terrain the GP-ss Ballhead allows you to pan parallel to the horizon, eliminating the need to carry a separate leveling base to create accurate panoramic images.

Comments about Acratech GP-ss Ballhead:
Good:
Looks?
pano head function
gimbal function
never got far enough to test these functions
Bad:
You should be concerned with their tension knob. This is supposed to allow you to reposition the camera quickly. Cool, but designed badly. You can loosen the large ball head release control and tighten the tension knob to get enough tension to move the head without releasing any more knobs. However, if you make the mistake of not loosening the large release knob first, with nothing but your fingers to tighten the tension knob, you will over-tighten the tension knob, and never be able to unscrew it again. It tightens so much that no force on earth can free it without damaging the control. So do it right without knowing there is only one way to do correctly or break it forever.
Also, because this was their smallest head that spec'd the same, I thought for sure that this would allow me to properly fold up my 3 Legged Thing tripod over the top of it and store it in my tripod bag. Nope. Awkward angles prevent this. Not cool! It was made smaller to allow this, but the design of the knobs do not accommodate back folding tripod sticks.
I don't see how this head gets such good reviews. It is not strong or robust. It's fragile and complicated to a fault. It's my second try with Acratech and my last. You've been warned.
