I love Nikon, but the Vello is a solid alternative when you just can't part with the money.
I am comparing this grip to the Nikon grip I have for my D7000:
    - it fits - no wiggle, space, or play between the body and grip.
    - buttons are responsive - I use the AE/AF for bbf, and there is no lag; shutter button has good feel, and directional buttons work fine.
    - Command dials work
    - battery tray - battery will not seat as easily in the tray as the Nikon grip, however, once it's in, you're fine. Tray slides in smoothly, and fits perfectly in grip.
    - Love the extra battery tray for back-up use with AA batteries.
    - The feel is solid and grip surfaces are identical to the Nikon.
    - Camera recognizes the grip/battery

I am happy with the performance, and very happy to have saved the extra money for other gear on my wish list.

I have a Nikon D600 and a 24-70mm f2.8 lens. The lens is fairly heavy, so the battery grip provides better balance.

The main reason I wanted a battery grip was so I could shoot verticals without having my right elbow wrenched up in the air to reach the shutter button. The battery grip provides a shutter release for vertical orientation shots.

I examined the grip Promaster makes, and it seemed a little junky in construction. I also examined the Phottix grip, and it didn't look any better. I've heard from more than one source that Nikon's grip looks junky. I read reviews for battery grips, and the general consensus seemed to be that Vello has one of the better made grips. Upon receiving mine from B&H, I agreed that the Vello grip appeared to be more solidly constructed.

I like the grip, and it makes my camera more enjoyable to handle. Having said that, the multi-selector is very squirrely. It cannot be depended on to take me to the focusing sensor that I'm trying to select, but it's possible to reach the multi-selector on the camera, so I'm OK with the multi-selector being undependable.

Also, for purposes of image playback, the multi-selector is pretty much useless, because if I want to zoom in on an image in the monitor and navigate the box that selects the portion of the image that will appear magnified in the monitor screen, then one touch of the squirrely multi-selector will entirely undo all the zooming that has been done, because it thinks I'm trying to press the OK button in the center of the multi-selector.

The grip also has a command dial and a sub-command dial. These work fairly well, but they cannot be 100% depended on to be accurate. For example, when changing f-stops in succession, the dial might go from f2.8, f4, f5.6, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16, f11, f16, f22. The dial for the shutter speeds also skips around like this.

I can live with these problems by using the camera's controls. The main thing I'm concerned about it the shutter release, and it has a good, solid feel, and it works well.

I'm not going to return the grip, because I suspect the problems with the one I have are typical, and if I exchange it, there will be more of the same. I'm glad to have a grip that is far less expensive than the Nikon version. I can live with the grip's shortcomings.

It's possible that with use, the command dials will begin to work better. I say this because when I first attached the grip to the camera and tried to turn the camera on, nothing happened. But when I removed the battery holder and then put it back into the grip, the camera turned on just fine, and I haven't had any more problems with the camera not powering up. Evidently, there was a problem caused by the contacts having never been used before, and removing the battery holder and reinserting it into the grip cleaned the contacts.

Was a pretty reliable product for about 1 year of normal use. The locking mechanism has just recently broken only allowing me to lock my camera in half way. Not good news if your not aware, last thing you want to do is drop your 2-3k camera cause of a $[$]grip. The genuine nikon grip is a rip off, but might have to bite the bullet now.

This economy unit is not premium quality, but it works fine with one exception. If you use the AEL/AFL button for dedicated focusing, it will not function for that use. It will hold focus and exposure fine, but cannot be used as a focus button independent of the shutter release. If you need to use a grip occasionally and/or for casual use, this product should serve you well.

I wouldn't personally give this product a star but I couldn't post review without a star.. The product is made a bit on the cheap side. My particular issue seems to be a manufacturing flaw. The cursor tab on the grip which is a small button isn't made to stay on the unit. It doesn't have any way of being secured to the frame and thus keeps falling off exposing the button and grid behind it. I would NOT recommend this product personally after my experience.

I bought this for a trip to San Francisco to minimize the need to charge between locations as I was going to have little time stationary. I tested it out the weekend before my trip and in terms of function and aesthetics, little separates it from the Nikon brand grip. Unfortunately, I had an issue with the toggle/dial coming off completely on my first day in the city. I'm overall very careful with my equipment but somehow a piece came off completely without me even realizing when it happened so whatever happened had to have been subtle. I would like to think that this occurance was an anomoly so I have taken it up with the Customer Service team of Vello, but until I hear back, I would suggest paying a little bit extra for the branded version.

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

I purchased this more for the vertical grip than the additional battery life, so keep that in mind as you read this review.

The first thing I want to point out is how well-constructed this grip is. I've owned a Vello grip for my D7000, and it felt plasticky and hollow, even with a battery installed. This grip, on the other hand, feels solid and well made. The only part that feels slightly out of place is the shallow and cheap feeling AE-L/AF-L button, but it's not so bad that I can't manage working with it. (I've reprogrammed that button to perform 'AF-ON' for focusing, just to give you an indication of how frequently I use it.)

If I'm being honest, I actually find the contouring on this grip to be better than the one on the D600/D610. The indent below the shutter button is noticeably deeper than the one on the native handgrip of the camera, which provides a more secure feeling when I pick it up.

The only negative I can really pick on is the fiddly process of connecting this grip to the camera. The wheel coupled to the mounting screw is thin and difficult to manipulate, and it takes a little patience to get it to mate properly with the underside of the camera. Fortunately, for most people, this isn't a process you will go through often, but I tend to add/remove the grip frequently, so this is a small frustration to deal with.

Minor annoyances aside, I would whole-heartedly recommend this product. Considering how much less it costs than the Nikon version, it's a no brainer for anyone that isn't of the mindset that only 1st-party products will give you the best experience.

                    AF ON doesn't work

This grip fits very well and I probably would have kept it if it allowed me to shoot using the AF-Lock button to focus (which is how I prefer to shoot). Unfortunately this grip does not give me this capability so I returned it. Otherwise it fits very well and creates a nice vertical hand grip. The buttons are a big flimsy and I would be afraid they would eventually break. All in all, you get what you pay for here.

As much as I would love to open my case and have a chior of Nikon Angels sing... Money comes into play every time. The Vello grip is a great alternative to the Nikon version of it. All the functionality is there and aside from a QA issue here or there, i see no reason to shell out the extra cash for the Nikon brand. I've grown comfortable with having three brands in my bag, Nikon, Vello, and sigma. I would buy this brand of grip over Nikon every time. If there is an issue, just return it and grab another unit. It's worth it. Plus you can spend some of your cash elsewhere.

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

I have been very impressed with this grip thus far. I have never used the Nikon version, so I have no comparison to make, but the savings difference is what sold me. I will also say that having only one camera battery slot versus the two that the Nikon brand grip provides was not really a make-or-break deal for me; anything that I do doesn't require an extensive need for battery power, so again, the savings were imperative to me. I always have a plethora of spare AA batteries on hand for my flash, so if all else fails, I can use those in a pinch.

In addition to the most obvious reason for getting a battery grip (the added battery life), I have really enjoyed having the vertical shutter release. Not having to twist my arm around with my heavy camera, heavy lens, and heavy flash has certainly saved me some sore muscles. I find it to be just as responsive as the shutter release on the actual camera.

It fits like a glove against my D610, has no "loose" feeling or movement, and the material of the grip feels exactly as such ... a grip. I don't have any worries for the safety of my camera in my hands while using this. I agree with many others that the camera simply feels better and more balanced while it is attached, and I don't even notice an aesthetic difference (the least of my worries, however). My camera recognized the additional device right away, and I have not had any malfunctions with it to date.

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

This product is great for taking photographs in portrait orientation. I was mixed between this and Nikon's official vertical grip, the MB-D14.

I had asked the B&H rep to compare them side-by-side (Note: I did not test them attached to the DSLR.) The difference I observed were the MB-D14 weighed slightly more, and that the quality/texture of the rubber in the grip has a more "prime" feel to it. Other than that, both have similar keys and functionality. Also, neither are made in the USA or Japan.

The selling point was the price, at half the price of the MB-D14, it was the biggest factor in my purchase choice. The BG-N10 came with the product item, a soft carry cloth, and 2 battery trays (1 to hold an EN-EL15 battery, and the other to hold AA batteries.)

I bought this grip to add more battery life and for the ability to use AA bateries in an emergency situation where I can't recharge. What I didn't realize was that the camera handles much better with the added piece. The additional shutter release and sub command dial are also an added bonus when holding the camera vertically.

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

The grip is definitely not a Nikon, but it hardly matters. It's very easy to attach to my Nikon D610. Just spin the wheel and a green light flashes, showing its connected. At first i thought the grip was a bit loose on the camera, but i just didn't have it on tight enough (tighten as hard as you can {within reason}) The grip of the camera is much more comfortable with the grip on. I would recommend using a sling rather than the standard strap because a regular strap may cross over your view in portrait orientation. This grip is not as good looking as the Nikon one. It doesn't flow perfectly with the body of the camera (aesthetically) but it's a great price and the Nikon is too expensive!I would buy this again.

I really like this grip. It worked very well with my D600. I mainly bought it for the comfort factor as I am a wedding photographer and have sore wrists after hours of shooting. It definitely suits my needs and preferred not to buy the expensive Nikon grip. I'd rather use the savings on other gear!

I gave this product 4 stars because of the significant price difference vs. the name brand version, but the Nikon version is pricey for a reason.

This grip doesn't feel as solid as my Nikon-brand grip for a D300s. The buttons seem a little loose, but I haven't had any big issues.
