The MS-66-K DSLR/Video Mini Shotgun Microphone Kit from Senal is a complete solution for recording audio directly to your DSLR or camcorder. With several qualities of a professional shotgun mic packed into a pen-sized lightweight design, it allows for clear dialog capture without compromising your compact setup or getting in the way of your shot.

The microphone itself has a hypercardioid polar pattern that allows it to clearly pick up subjects directly in front of it while strongly rejecting unwanted off-axis sound. Designed for the clear capture of dialog, the MS-66-K is optimized for applications such as capturing interviews both in and outdoors. Its small, 6-inch frame stays out of frame when mounted to your DSLR, assuring your mic will never be in your shot, even with most wide-angle lenses.

The MS-66-K has an SPL handling of up to 124dB, allowing it be used with ease on louder sources. For quieter or more subtle subjects, the mic has a 3-stage gain control, allowing you to select between 0, 10, or 20dB of additional gain, therefore bypassing the notoriously noisy preamps aboard many cameras and camcorders. The mic has a partially coiled 7-inch cable that terminates in a stereo 3.5mm connector. Thanks to the included shockmount, you can attach the MS-66-K to a boompole as well as a camera. The rugged shockmount slides effortlessly onto the base of the microphone for a sturdy hold. Its slim profile allows fast and easy access to all controls and foam windscreen, and can be tilted, allowing you to adjust the angle of the mic as needed. The included windscreen helps reduce wind noise while in use. The kit includes a limited 10-year warranty

I needed a mic with 20dB boost option because my camera (Canon T3i) has a noisy preamp so I have to turn down its audio level to absolute minimum. This was the low-cost option that met that requirement.

At the minimum, the boost absolutely works and I can get adequate audio signal. And the sound is quite good -- balanced without any harsh, unnatural peaks. I use this to record myself talking and playing the guitar for YouTube, and didn't want to use a separate audio recorder if I didn't have to. This mic is quite adequate, as the sound quality is quite good.

On the criticism side, the battery compartment cover was very difficult to open -- I had to use a small flathead screwdriver, which scratched the plastic casing and made it not returnable. :( And there are no power on/battery indicator, so it's easy to start recording without the mic turned on or leave it on after you use it. The original batteries that came with it ran out in about a month after usage -- I probably recorded about 10 hours, all with 20dB boost. The last hour or so I did without realizing that the battery had died so the footage was unusable.

Before purchasing any gear, I always do a fair bit of research to see what others are saying about it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find many reviews or examples of this microphone, but due to it being on sale, I decided to take the risk and purchase it anyways. I have concluded that this microphone is an OK, inexpensive option for someone who is just starting out in shooting video on DSLRs.

Upon receiving the Senal MS-66, I was instantly surprised by how thin it was. Without the windscreen, it is slightly thicker than your average pen, and because of this it is powered by button cell batteries, which is slightly disappointing as they are not as common to find such as 9V or AA batteries. The construction isn't the greatest either, as it feels like cheap plastic. I literally thought I was going to break the latch off the battery cover as I tried for several minutes to open it. Luckily Senal claims 100 hour battery life, which far surpasses other DSLR shotgun microphones that are available like ones Rode or Shure make. One benefit of the weight is that if you do a lot of handheld shooting, this mic will barely add any additional weight to your camera.

Now for the most important question, how does it sound? A friend and I conducted a test for ourselves and test four microphones: Senal MS-66, Rode VideoMic Pro, Shure VP83F LensHopper, and the 5D MKIII internal microphone. Without getting into too much detail, we found that the Rode and Shure completely outperformed the Senal, which wasn't a shock to us, as the Rode and Shure are much larger, better constructed, and 2-3x the price of the Senal. What was still disappointing, is that the Senal was only slightly better than the 5D's audio. Although the audio was slightly cleaner and more directional when using the Senal, we found that it still picked up a fair amount of noise around the room and no matter how much we adjusted settings there was a slight hissing.

In conclusion, the Senal MS-66 is a cheap solution for anyone looking to get slightly better audio than that of a camera's internal microphone. I didn't expect for the Senal to perform in the same league as the Rode or Shure, however I still can't help but be disappointed by the construction and subpar results.

IF i had known it was as thin as a bic pen i wouldn't have picked it up.That being said the sound is an improvement over on board camera sound and it is way better than those $ @ mics i bought so its not a total waste of money.I would not use it in a professional setting. It does not isolate sound in front as good as i hoped. The battery compartment sucks but the batteries are cheap and last a while.Mine cane without batteries and i needed it the day i got it so i had to take a detour to get batteries. You get wgat you pay for. If you have $ only then this is what you get but if you are planning on doing professional work save your money and get something better.

It is a microphone really very good considering price and size. I bought this item for use with a DSLR (the best use for it) sony A7 and it worked perfectly. It comes with two small batteries which are required to function properly, and has a DBs regulator that can be 0dB, 10dB or 20dB, each with a different capture gain. It works well for close recording distances (around 2 meters from the sound source).

Good sensitivity and sound the with built in amp. Amp noise/hiss is a bit high when set to 20db. But it may be my audio recorder's internal amp that is noisy and not this little mic's fault... Very compact and light. Primary use on camera and/or boom.

I use the MS-66-K to record interviews and also I use it, with a cable extension, as a shotgun in mike pole. It works really well and the quality of the sound is aceptable. It is not a professional mike, but it does the job. It is a cheaper alternative to more expensive mikes and the sound quality is almost the same. The two batteries, they are not AA or AAA battery, but round-watch type batteries are reliable and they keep the mike working for many hours. I recommend to buy extra batteries online, they are cheap and you can buy them by dozens so you have enough spare batteries for all your recording sessions.

I was surprised by the price and heard decent reviews online. After acquiring it, I was very disappointed with the sound quality. This may actually work for someone that would like a shotgun mic on their iphone (with a converting cable), however, for a gh4 or BMPCC user it's just not worth it.

Using this microphone on an iPad for recording various types of sound in many difficult situation. While I do not always have the ability to get "close" to the source of the sound, I find that the MS-66-K works really well at bringing in the sound. Directionality is excellent and it had become my "go-to" microphone. The shock mount is very effective at elimination unwanted sound. I could not be more pleased and the price point was amazing. But then B&H is the place to shop if you want special pricing and quality, not to mention an inventory that is second to none.

Comments about Senal MS-66-K DSLR/Video Mini Shotgun Microphone Kit:
