Besides for the axial chromatic aberration, this is a superb manual focus lens. When opened all the way to f/1.4 it does get quite soft, but when stepped up to f/2 it is pretty sharp. Because the DOF is so narrow, making focus adjustments for close subjects is near impossible to get perfect without a tripod and monitoring the sensor with live view zoomed in 10x. For subjects at a reasonable distance I can just do some manual focus bracketing (slowly turning the focus ring while burst shooting) and hope that one shot catches the right focus point. The type of chromatic aberration in this lens was a killer for me at first until Adobe updated LR and ACR with tools to fix axial CA. Also, the focus ring is very nice. It's not too easy to turn but not too hard, and the range is spread around it nicely.

The Rokinon 85mm lens has good optical quality and a low price, but has major functional limitations. Cons:- No autofocus- Manual aperture, and no auto aperture stop-down. The aperture is controlled by the aperture ring and stops down immediately, so the viewfinder gets very dim as the lens is stopped down. It is like having depth-of-field preview always on.- No electronic interface with the camera, so lens type, focal length, and aperture are not recorded.- Minimum focal length is 3.3 feet. You can get close enough for a head and shoulders shot, but not for a tightly framed face shot.Pros:- Low price- Acceptably sharp wide open- Shallow depth of field and good bokeh wide openI use the Rokinon 85mm on a Canon 5D MkII. It is best used on a tripod, using live view to frame and focus. The live view overcomes the dim viewfinder problem when the lens is stopped down. The Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens is $130 more expensive but is a much more functional lens. The Canon is sharper at all apertures than the Rokinon. The only benefit of the Rokinon is the extra 3/4 of a stop, which does provide a noticible difference in depth of field and background blur. I rate it at 3 stars because the 3/4 stop advantage and lower price don't overcome the functional limitations compared to the Canon 85mm f/1.8, even considering the low price. Optically I rate it 4 stars.Detailed technical reviews of this lens can be found at [@] under the brand name of its manufacturer, Samyang.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Canon:

Sharper than any of the mid-grade zooms I have. Clean, creamy backgrounds, excellent color rendition with minimal chromatic aberration thanks to the aspherical element within. A nice size for an 85 mm too.Definitely an excellent portrait lens. Not that awesome for landscapes or sports and such; incapable of macro photography. Made me much more confident about buying a manual-focus only lens (it's so manual it has an APERTURE RING, like the old lenses from way back. No electronic components; camera doesn't even know there's a lens on the front. But it's my lens of choice when it comes to commercial, fashion, and portrait work. Nailing the focus through the viewfinder is tricky, especially in low light, but with a little patience it turns out super sharp, bokeh-licious images that really grab attention.

I LOVE THIS LENS! Its a huge upgrade from the standard factory lens that came with my 70D. Its a little challenging using manual focus but it's forcing me to get better at my craft! This lens brings the photograph to life with such vivid details!

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Canon:

I bought this lens mainly for portrait work and the low f-stop. For the price, it is an amazing lens. I use this on a Canon 7D and love the depth of field compared to my Pentax 50mm and Sigma 18-35mm. My setup consists of a LCD screen magnifier eyepiece since I only shoot in live mode with this lens. I'm not sure if I can survive with trying to focus through the viewfinder. Which is why I rated it 4 stars. The lens hood is thin and feels like it would crack easily.

I was initially saving up for a 70-200mm, but this was so affordable plus I absolutely need the F1.8, since the 7D does not perform as well in high ISO compared to the 5D. My friend bought this at the same time I did and had trouble using the lens for focusing. The Sigma 85mm and the Canon 85mm f1.2 would be the next investment. I would love this lens with AF, but for now it renders beautiful pictures if you can master manual focusing.

If you don't mind manual focus this lens is beautiful. I do wish I had autofocus since the exact focal length is so tiny it's hard to be precise but it's a great lens beautiful. Glad I bought it

I mainly create music videos, and this lens has given me the bokeh, clarity, and color that I was wishing for. The color was especially suprising, the color on this lens is vastly superior to the Canon 50mm 1.8. All in all this lens is an amazing value for the money.

So far, I am very pleased with this lens. My only negative would be that the LoCA (Bokeh Fringing) is really bad when I shoot at f1.4 and f2. I shoot only with a crop sensor body, so I guess I cannot fully appreciate this lens - as it was made for full frame. Although I am very particular about my photos, but for this price I think I could get over the purple fringing.

This lens is fantastic. Great clarity, good bokeh, all around beautiful.

I have never used auto focus, so the manual focus on this lens is great. It's got a smooth focus pull, great for racking. It's perfect for video, also works great for portraits and headshots.

The only downside to this awesome lens is it's 3 foot minimum focus length... No ECU's with this guy.

It more than makes up for it with all its other attributes- I don't go to a shoot without this lens. The results are stellar, whether its a tight framed closeup or a rich wide shot. It delivers amazing quality paired with my Canon 6D.

I have used this lens for multiple portrait shoots and I have fallen in love with it. Purchasing it, I was fairly certain it was going to have a plastic feel due to the low price, but boy, was I wrong... This lens is a tank. It's almost as heavy as my 24-105 L lens! Wonderful build quality and the focus ring is smoother than butter.

I have ran into only one problem with this lens: when you are shooting around f/1.4-f/2.8 it really just feels like you're guessing and hoping that your subjects are in focus. There is no chip telling you that you are in focus, which in turn does not inform your camera where the f stop is at so when you import your pictures, there is no info about the lens.
But there is also no doubt in my mind that using that lens has made me a far better photographer.

I've had this lens for about 8 months and am so surprised by and happy with the performance. Sharp, beautiful bokeh, smooth focus ring, hefty build quality, all for such an affordable price. If you don't need auto focus, this thing delivers. It's also very small and discreet for such a long range.

This a high quality piece of glass and at this price point is practically a steal. I use it on my T4i and it works like a charm. If you're a little more than a beginner and you're looking to upgrade, go with a Rokinon. I'm going to purchasetheir 14mm next. It also features a manual aperture ring and only manual focus which will help you improve your skills as a beginner and give you total manual control.

I got this lens as an inexpensive, wide aperture portrait lens for sharp focal points and massive bokeh and it is exactly that. It's a little tricky getting it perfectly sharp around the edges of the frame, but it works excellently with centered focal points and any softness of a subject at the edges is not so much that it's uncorrectable. If you want awesome portraits and are on a budget, this is the lens to get.

Probably one of the sharper lenses I have gotten my hands on. The MF needs a little getting used to, but if your new to MF, the best way to learn how to use is to get out and use it. I use this as a walk around lens, and if you use the zone focusing technique, then MF isnt really a problem. The focusing ring is SOLID!! Nice firmness to it, gives you great control and precision. The aperture ring is great also, clicks right into place.

This lens is also great at rendering skin tones. Once you get the hang of MF, images taken are pretty sharp. Now, if it only had a confirmation chip, that would be a perfect.

I really would like to give this a 4 1/2 stars but felt it more deserving to round up to 5 rather than down to 4.Lets start with the price point. You are getting an amazing value for the price. You cannot find any quality glass as fast as 1.4 for cheaper. This is an absolute steal!Function - The focus ring was a little stiff upon first use but not enough to cause any problems. The manual focus and manual ap. is something that you need to be comfortable with before you buy the lens but I wasn't as all surprised as I read up before I purchased. The bokeh from this lens is amazing and it produces great images even on a crop sensor. This is definitely my new favorite prime and beats the heck out of my beloved nifty-fifty. Bottom Line- If you are a portrait photographer and want a fast, manual lens, then you should pony-up and get this lens.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Canon:

I bought this lens for 60D and it's very zoomed in-- a video I watched on Youtube said that because this lens is for a full sensor, camera bodies like 60D or 7D (that isn't a full sensor) will produce a zoom that is about double the original distance. In this case it's about 135mm-150mm.

I'm going to play with the lens for a little more and decide whether I should keep it or not. I'm thinking, if I'm focusing on an actor's face from the distance but don't want them to feel intimidated by the closeness of the camera, this lens will be perfect. Even more, if I ever do upgrade to a canon mark series, this lens will work beautifully.

If you do not own APS-C or a crop-censor body and plan on filming, this lens would be your first bet! Even if you own 60D like me, it may prove to you (I'm hoping this will to me over this weekend's shoot), it's worth having around a 135-150mm prime zoom lens.

The lens is absolutely beautiful in its build and image quality. Amazingly large aperture! I love the way the focus ring moves.

Smooth focusing makes this lens great for both photographers and videographers. This allows you to get close up shots of a person, but it doesn't quite make it for Extreme close up shots (min focus distance). I am wondering if a close up filter could help with that...

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Canon:

This is a solid piece of glass. The focus is smooth, and this works great for close-up shots, but not for extreme-close-ups. The min focus distance doesn't allow you to get an in-focus shot of say, someone's eye... unless its a huge eye and you can stand farther away I guess.

The silly issue for it though is that the EF red dot alignment marker is on the inside of the mount and not on the barrel of the body. You wouldn't think it would matter, but it is a little frustrating as you fuddle for a few precious seconds while air and maybe dust breath in and out of the body while you're switching lenses.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Canon:

I bought this lens three weeks ago and have used it 3-4 times, mainly for video and low-light photography usage. I use a APS-C camera (60D). The lens is an EF mount and does not have any electronic contacts for communicating with the camera.

As a result, the camera will not have any EXIF information or even recognize that a lens is attached if you try to record video or go into live view. But this isn't too big of a problem - the camera just gives you a notice that you can choose to turn off.

The lens is quite heavy and of strong build, although I don't believe the casing is made from metal. It feels sturdy in the hand. There are two adjustable rings on the lens - a focus ring and an aperture ring (since you cannot control the aperture from the camera body). Both of these rings are well-constructed, but the aperture ring is turned in discrete steps (I think there may be a declicked version for cine use).

The bokeh is pleasant and not distracting. The lens is quite sharp, though you need to be proficient with manual focusing. There doesn't seem to be too much vignetting, and I have not tested for CA on the 60D. I recommend this lens for those who are looking for an affordable wide-aperture prime for low-light and video use.
