The CanoScan 9000F Mark II Film & Document Scanner from Canon features a 12-line color CCD sensor that scans not just documents and photos but also 35mm negatives and slides as well as medium format film. The scanner captures film & negatives at a high 9600dpi optical and captures photos and documents at up to 4800dpi optical. Easily digitize your negatives and slides so they can be viewed, edited, and shared on the computer. The 48-bit internal color depth provides accurate color rendition. The included film holders and guides ensure you get accurate scans the first time and eliminate the guesswork of film scanning.

The FARE Level 3 retouching removes dust and scratches and restores color to faded photos. Additionally, the scanner features built-in gutter shadow correction. When scanning pages from a book, the 9000F Mark II automatically corrects for shadows that typically appear near a book's spine when scanning so you get an accurate scan the first time.

After you finish scanning a document, you can use the included OCR (optical character recognition) software to convert the image into editable text. The included software also provides the ability to save scans as PDF files for easy document archiving and sharing. Have a specific type of scan you perform often? You can program the scanner's 1-touch EZ Buttons to automate specific scans for a smoother workflow.

Also included is My Image Garden software, which makes the organization and printing of your photos both easy and fun with helpful and creative features.

FARE Level 3: Built-in retouching technology that delivers automatic correction to photos and film. It removes much of the dust and scratches while restoring its color all at the same time. Restore the life of your memories automatically instead of having to spend lots of time manually retouching them

The scanner itself is great. Out of the box, easy set up and was using it right away. I primarily imported thru Photoshop CS5 and within a short time scanned in about 70 pictures and negatives. Even without a printed manual, it was easy to figure out changing between scanning prints and negatives. The quality was great - nice range of grays to black - so everything dark wasn't black. Color was accurate. I tried the software, but it seemed a bit cumbersome and will have to sit down when I have time to work thru it to see if it's worth using. If you don't have another import method, like Photoshop and have to rely on the software, it may take a bit longer in your initial set up and learning curve. It scans quickly and quietly. I would recommend this scanner for the price and function. I read other comments about the negative holders being flimsy plastic, but as of yet, I haven't had any problems. Of course, they are plastic, so you do want to be careful with them.

I was deciding between this scanner and the Epson Perfection V600... and purchased this one because I'm already familiar with Canon products, and preferred the 9600 x 9600 dpi vs. 6400 x 9600 dpi and a few other minor differences between the 2. For the price and preferences I was looking for, it wasn't worth spending more on the Epson when the Canon had what I was looking for and then some. The software differences between the Epson and Canon were a non-issue for me, since I work in Photoshop. It's a great scanner and I've been pleased with the results.

The reason I gave it 4 out of 5 rather than 5 - was because of the lack of printed instruction material on how to use the software and scanning process. The onscreen guide is ok - but sometimes it's easier to have it in print. Plus, there was nothing about using the software, especially for those who would like to utilize the dust/scratch removal, etc. The scanner itself works well, but it helps to know how to use it.

I scan photos & documents for several hours every day as a professional graphics researcher. The included software is the worst software ever. It appends not only the scanning date, but also a sequence number to your file name. Example: _20131202_0001 will be added to EVERY file or photo that scanned on Dec 2, 2013. You can't name your file before you scan without going into the settings file every single time. More screens. More clicking. Productivity dropped substantially along with a corresponding increase in my blood pressure. The MP Navigator EX software that came with the 9000F (prev version) was basic, but it worked fine. Plus it didn't append my file name with all that extra garbage and let me name the file before the scan (much better for workflow purposes). Example: you look at a photo or doc, decide what you want to name it --then you name the digital file, scan & turn the photo over in the paper file, move on to the next item. With this Mark II software after the photo you have to take it off the scan bed turn it back over to look at it again & remember what it is supposed to be called, then turn it over again to put it in the file folder. This will make sense if you scan a lot of files & photos like I do for hours & hours every day. My document scans are typically named with the archival ref number, date of doc, whatnot). Eg: RG227-e124-box10-catalina.pdf now add "_20131202_0001" before .pdf. Unnecessarily extra long.

I bought the 9000F Mark II from B&H because I thought it was a newer version of the original 9000F. The hardware is exactly the same. Doesn't Mark II imply improved or better than the original model? Nope. WIth the new software it might as well be a entirely different scanner. I contacted Canon to ask if I could use the old MP Navigator EX software with the Mark II. No dice. Canon's response: "There is not a way to use the MP Navigator program with the CanoScan 9000F Mark II, and there is not a way to prevent the appended information from being appended to the scan filename. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause." This is more than an Inconvenience - it directly affects workflow and productivity, which is important to any freelancer. I need to either buy 3rd party software to use this scanner effectively or put that money towards another brand. Scanners at this price point are nowadays pretty much the same (for sharpness, color, etc). If the difference comes down to the software then Canon has lost my loyalty after buying 10+ canoscan machines.

Comments about Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II Film & Document Scanner:

I REALLY needed to digitize the many boxes of film negatives and slides I'd been moving around with me every few years. I tried one of the SD card slide/film scanners for a while and it was okay, but this has proven to be much better. I have some of my parents' slides from the early 1970's and although they're not in perfect shape, the CanoScan has done really well with them giving me more than adequate high-resolution digital versions so that I can do some level adjustments and scratch removal.

I can't speak to the photo software because I really only use the scanning utility and then bring everything into either Aperture or Photoshop to clean up. However the scanning utility was easy to setup with custom settings and the CanoScan is very accurate in terms of recognizing individual images on a 35mm film strip.

Comments about Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II Film & Document Scanner:

I bought this because I needed better scans of color prints than I could get from my office multifunction printer/scanner, and this certainly meets that need. I compared scans from my printer scanner with scans of the same print from the Canoscan, and the results are far better -- more accurate colors, better correction of defects, and faster. In addition to the scanner, I bought VueScan software, which provides a great deal of capability and flexibility and which recognized the Canoscan immediately. Therefore I can't comment on the Canon software that's included with the scanner. A dedicated film scanned would be a better choice for film, but the Canoscan will handle slides and even color negatives. It's useful to make a "color profile" if you're going to scan slides or prints so that you get correct color. To do that you need to buy IT8 targets. YOu can get them for Ektachrome and for both KOdak and Fuji paper -- Search for "it8 target" and go for the "Affordable" web site listing -- the one with s German (.de) URL.

The Plustek if far superior in every sense except that it is slower. The software that comes with the Canoscan is also weak. I got VueScan instead and it is far superior.I cannot recommend the CanoScan for slides.

I got this to replace an old HP S20. For what I do it worked great and I'd still be using it if I could get it to work on Win7. As far as the 9000F II, I really like it as a scanner the software seems to be working well and once again for my basic needs it does what I want/need.Not really a complaint but loading negatives in a tray is clumsy, but not really a big deal. I have about 3500 negs that I'm scanning for personal use and the scanner is well worth the $[$] One suggestion to any one doing a lot of negatives or needing to archive for professional or business purposes, get a dedicated film scanner, the extra money will be well spent.

Comments about Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II Film & Document Scanner:

This does a very nice job of scanning documents and photos. Unfortunately, I purchased it because it is advertised to scan film and while I admit it will produce a photograph from a negative, the quality is abhorrent. I cannot comment on slides or color film, but B&W film scans produce artifacts that are inexplicable. A dust-free negative, freshly cleaned, dust-free glass, and the photo looks it has a ton of dust on it. The "dust" changes with resolution selected, so I believe that it's an inherent problem. 120 negatives seem to do better than 35mm, but the artifacts are still there, just in reduced amounts. It's the first time I've been disappointed by anything named Canon. I'll keep it and play with it more, but I have a sneaky suspicion I'll be purchasing a dedicated film scanner.

I scan a lot of old negatives, including many that are unique sizes. The negative frames are good but don't fit 80% of my negatives. I had a local glass shop cut and polish the edges of 2 pieces of glass that I lay my negatives on .. I then cut and paste after I scan the entire sleeve of negatives - labor intensive but effective. The software that comes with this scanner is ok but there are several better options (including SilverFast - but you need to search out the one that is best for you)

Scanned in about 25 rolls of film and its working great so far. Took a little while to figure out the optimal settings in the scan gear program, but after that it was pretty repetitive. Great to see the old negatives come to life.

I bought this scanner to convert old 35mm family slides to digital. It took a few minutes to figure everything out, but now that I have a routine, I can work through a group of slides pretty quickly.

I use this to not only scan documents, but photos and film too. Unit works great in "AUTO", and produces excellent copies. This replaces my older Canon 2400 which doesn't have drivers for the newer windows software. The usual Canon product - GREAT!

We were going to send off our slides from our childhood, the slides our parents took and some of the 110mm also. Once we received the estimate from 2 of the three we solicited I almost died.

My wife suggested we try a scanner and do it our self's, I reviewed several and landed upon the 900F. Boy are we glad we did, it will scan 4 slides at a time place them in there own file. The 6x9 scan so perfectly, great quality ease of use and superb resolution. Its a must if you want to do your own slides,110, 6x9 and larger.

Other than a very small cosmetic scratch, which the product came with, the scanner is an outstanding product. Great resolution, very quite (as compared to my other scanner), came with very good film trays (they position and orient very well), very comprehensive user manual (don't try to print it out as it is ~ 560 pages), and has outstanding Canon customer support.

I mainly purchased this scanner for the ability to scan 120 film size, along with 35mm film. I haven't used that aspect of it yet, but I scanned some old pictures to a very high resolution very quick and easily. They came out very clear and I was able to work with a photo program to enhance them and maintain clarity. Easy scanner to use for pictures.

Comments about Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II Film & Document Scanner:

I use the CanoScan 9000F Mark II primarily to scan hoards of slides, negatives and old photos from my photojournalism days. One important thing about this model, compared to the 9000F and 8800F, both of which I owned and used, is that the Mark II is much faster and produces cleaner images. Scanning documents to copy, print, save or create a PDF file is simple, fast and gives excellent results. The only thing I don't like is that I don't have 2 of them. It's a great machine and worth the cost and has an excellent warranty policy with Canon.
