I purchased this unit for the Thunderbolt connectivity and for quality. So many of the new machines are devoid of internal storage for hard drives. The direction is to run your apps and OS from a SSD boot drive and run your files from an external - fast - reliable - drive.
So I thought this was a good start in that direction.
I have other LaCie products including a Thunderbolt bridge that is connected to an e-sata reader (for bare hard drives). So when I read the negative reviews on this drive I thought perhaps it was isolated. Ive been happy with their products in the past.
    Sadly, not the case.
Opened it up, plugged it in - very excited to run at Thunderbolt speeds, and, fail. You have to run their set up software. After a few minutes it gave me a message that it could not complete the set up. The drive was unmounted from the desktop. I tried again. Fail again. Then it locked up my computer. Twice. I had to do hard restarts. Then i tried running disk tools in my own utilities. It wouldn't even see the drive at first. Finally it read the drive and I tried formatting it that way. No good. Fail.
Very expensive drive and my expectations were high. Sadly it seems the many bad reviews on this drive are accurate.
I've opted to go with two external USB 3.0 Western Digital My Book Studio drives for now. Eventually I may move to their higher end Thunderbolt units that have user replaceable drives. It looks like a great set up and reviews are strong from what I have seen. USB 3.0 is not as fast as the Thunderbolt of course, but at almost a third the price, and that it WORKED when I plugged it in, it becomes the clear winner.
I REALLY wanted this LaCie to be the solution, but it seems those who are saying they have let their quality control slip significantly, may be right.

Comments about LaCie 3TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

Drive connects fast & operation is smooth all around – have not had any issues. Only downside is there's only 1 Thunderbolt port – sometimes it would be convenient to have a 2nd so you can daisy chain. It's also like other LaCie drives, a little noisy – which is not a big deal for me. Overall, happy with this & my other LaCie drives.

Comments about LaCie 3TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

As a photographer, I bought this drive to store photographs, and to transfer several gigabytes of photos stored on CD's and transfer photos from an older external drive.

When loading and saving photographs in Photoshop there is no delay in saving even the largest file.

However, to achieve the maximum speed, the computer also needs the thunderbolt port to connect to the drive.

I can't think of anything negative to mention about this drive.

Comments about LaCie 3TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

It does seem faster, but I haven't used in enough speed crucial work to know for sure.

I've seen some reviews of this drive that complain about it's software putting it own thing on your computer...etc...first thing I do with any drive is delete all that by erasing the drive in disc utility and renaming it. Done. No problems. It is exactly the size of my other USB 3 and FireWire800 D2 Quadras, which is a little extra plus. The reason I don't give it 5 stars is that unlike the older FireWire800 D2's Quadras, it does not have 2 thunderbolt ports, so there is no pass through feature. My iMac only has 2 thunderbolt ports, so by the time I get a second drive, I'll be maxed out. And that'll eventually be pretty important b/c the infrastructure of thunderbolt is designed to link and pass thru multiple devices. Right now, I'm at less of a loss because my USB 3 ports were getting all filled up.

I use external drives for Mac Time Machine computer, video and photo backup. Also for video authoring with Premiere Pro. Previously I used WD books but have had three of them fail. So I went back to La Cie drives, which have been consistently reliable for me. I have a thunderbolt SSD rugged drive for portability. This new drive using thunderbolt is faster than any drive I've ever had. Perfect. Pros and Cons ultimately aren't known until years of use. But previous experience is reliable.

I use the 3Tb drive on my Imac thunderbolt port. It will be my backup disk and picture storage. I haven't tried video transfer from the camera to the drive yet. I think that would be the real test. I connected the drive and ran the software. It asked if I was going to share this drive with a PC, I said no so it used the whole drive in Mac format. It's very quiet. When the Mac does backups, you can hear a slight sound that reminds me of what modems sounded like. So far, I like the drive.

Using this as a photo drive on a 2013 iMac with internal 256G SSD. WOW! This drive, connected via Thunderbolt, is extremely fast. Lightroom is working so smooth.Compared to my old Lacie d2 Firewire drive this new Thunderbolt drive is silent. No disk noise at all. However, the blue light is very bright.Only downside is no Thunderbolt pass through :( Isn't that the point of Thunderbolt?!

Comments about LaCie 3TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

I work as wedding cameraman and get a lot o media to edit in each wedding coverage. So this beautiful hard drive was the best price-quiality-storage choice.
Thunderbolt run fast and let available the USB port to conect another devices as Contour Shuttle for example.

                    Grear choice.

Comments about LaCie 3TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

I bought this external hard drive to back up my 256 GB Solid State Macbook Pro and couldn't be happier with the results, setup, and ease of use. I love the speed of the Solid State laptop (I bike a lot, too, so it takes some jostling), but needed somewhere to put all of my music, photos, and videos, which take up valuable space on my computer. Now all my media files are stored on the LaCie, and I have plenty of extra space to add more in the future.

This LaCie model (3 TB d2 Quadra Hard Drive with USB 3.0/Thunderbolt) has a nice setup feature which allows you to format the hard drive for both Mac and PC sharing when you initially set it up. You simply slide a bar to choose how much space you want to devote for sharing between Mac and PC. As I don't use a PC anymore and have other smaller external hard drives that work for both Mac and PC, I opted for the full 3 TB (100%) for Mac, but it's nice you have a choice. The LaCie also has nice integration with Apple's Time Machine for regular backups and asks you if you want to setup Time Machine upon installation. Note: you have to be plugged in (i.e., the LaCie is not wireless) for it to complete Time Machine backups. This doesn't really bother me as it does others; in fact, I like the added security of it not being wireless.

The hard drive is not ultra quiet when downloading (again, this doesn't really bother me) as some have mentioned in other reviews. I've never had an external hard drive, personally, that didn't make some noise when downloading. Perhaps there are some out there, but likely much more expensive. It makes about as much noise as the Apple Super-Drive does when burning a CD.

Overall, I think the contstruction and materials are very high-grade. There is a large blue light on the front when the hard drive is on, which is unfortunate (I prefer little to no frills). The hard drive arrived quite heavy in the box, which surprised me at first. However, I now like the heaviness of it as it seems less likely to topple over on my desk. You can setup the stand (which screws in) for either horizontal or vertical display. For those wanting a portable hard drive, this is definitely not the model for you. I use it as a backup and keep it at home. There are extremely compact ones (with less capacity) that I use for travel.

A big bonus: LaCie throws in a free Thunderbolt cable, which can be pretty expensive if you don't already have one and have to buy it separately. I didn't use the USB cable to connect to my laptop (Thunderbolt is quicker) so can't speak about it here. I had about 1.5 TB of files transferred over from two smaller hard drives in one long night while I slept. Great hard drive for the price and ease of setup. Highly recommend!

When loading images from the drive in photoshop or lightroom, everything is super slow. I'm not sure if that is the fault of the drive or user error but it is annoying. Also, the drive makes much more noise than advertised. It starts up every so often, blue light flashing, and lots of noise.
