I am an inveterate Mac user and like many of us seem to spend much of my time looking for more storage space. I thought I had it solved a few years ago when I purchased a Firewire 6 TB RAID– but as I was looking for speed rather than safety I still came away looking for more. I found it in this LaCie 4 TB drive. It's taken the load off my RAID and allowed me to change it back to a safer RAID 0 and so become my backup device. The LaCie carries the burden of multiple symphonic libraries from East West. These and a variety of other samples take up about half the drive, leaving me room for some further growth.

The LaCie is far and away the fastest external drive I've ever owned. Subjectively it seems comparable to the internal drive. There is another model LaCie that is substantially faster than this. I'm not sure, but I believe this model might've been an early contender in the Thunderbolt category. In any case, it worked straight up out-of-the-box, accepted reformatting to divide the drive, and has accepted a lot of data very quickly without problems. I only wish that I had bought one sooner. One small piece of advice, if you are a Mac owner remember to turn off hard drive sleep in the Energy Saver panel in system preferences. Otherwise, any exterior drive will take a performance hit. Other good things about the LaCie: it's quite small, virtually silent and on the handsome side. It comes with hardware to allow either horizontal or vertical placement, or placement in a proprietary LaCie rack. It is quite energy-efficient, as it has no fan, but instead relies on its aluminum body to radiate excess heat. It comes with both Thunderbolt and USB 3 Cables.

I bought this HDD only one year ago. One day, the enclosure stoped working. I took it to apple technical service, they opened I found out that the hard drive inside was a seagate, the most common crasher HDD. Thank good this time I could being able to save my data. But this Lacie is just a pretty face. I won't buy one again.

Worked right out of the box - but that was expected. The drive gets pretty warm when used and is also quite noisy. Otherwise, it's pretty good for how much it costs.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

I use this HD to edit video. Prior to purchasing this USB 3.0 drive I was using a USB 2.0 to edit with a PC using Premiere CS5. That drive couldn't handle the load and locked up during editing. I've only been using the LaCie drive for 2 weeks but so far I haven't had any locking up, dropped frames or slow downloading. Like others have said this is a fast (I don't have Thunderbolt), quiet HD and was easy to setup. Follow the instructions on the box or go online to their site.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

This drive is very fast, and keeps up when editing on my new Mac Pro, and FCPX. Large gb Photoshop files transfer easily and quickly as well. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is the drive was not initially recognized by my new tower when I first got the drive. However, I remember reading that someone else had a similar issue, and they were told to reverse the thunderbolt cable. Worked like a charm after I reversed the cable. I love B&H as they were ready to replace it as soon as they heard from me via eamil. They sent postage right away, but I did not end up needing it, and have been very happy since the issue was resolved. I will buy another drive like this eventually when I can afford one.

I bought as an additional hard drive to my Pegasus R4. just as back up in case anything goes wrong with pegasus, plus if I have to be mobile its much easier to carry around compare to my pegasus, plus still have a 4TB size. And has a great price. I am using it almost a year now, so far no problems. Its my second Lacie hard drive and I am very happy with it.

This works like a charm. The case is hefty metal, nice solid feel. The T'bolt interface is truly fast. The set up for iMac was quick and easy. It's not absolutely silent but it's by far the quietest disk I have.

I just got this drive, but so far so good.\Some people discuss that the thunderbolt throughput speed won't really be effective with this drive. If it is truly no faster than usb 3.0 then I'll be disappointed to have spent the extra $[$]over the non-thunderbolt version of this drive. But speed is important to me so I sprang for this.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

Fast. We use it as a backup for our Lacie 4TB 2Big. Perfect backup drive but also fast enough to edit on without wanting to punch myself in the face. I would buy a second for a third redundant back up as soon as more funds magically make there way back into my wallet. Little pricy but the cost is worth the speed and reliability.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

This is the fifth LaCie external drive I have purchased from B&H. All have performed perfectly. The Quadra Hard Drive was very easy to set up and install. I was able to copy my 1TB of photos from my old drive to this one very efficiently. At two weeks it is doing everything advertised.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt on same drive are just what the doctor ordered when you work with newer Thunderbolt macs and older towers and need to transfer data. I love the way this drive automatically powers off at shut down and spins up when you start up. The only problem with this is the speed issues. It max's out on both thunderbolt and USB 3 connections. So that's great but that max speed is the best you'll get out of a single 7200RPB drive. It's ashamed that LaCie and other manufactures (g-technology) don't make a small raid drive with both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt options. I say that now but sure a drive like that will surface soon.

I use this to back up my photos from my imac. This product is easy to use and setup. It has a small footprint on my desk and is fast with the thunderbolt connection. I does require an outlet to use and can become a little loud. But otherwise it is a great device.

At my research institute all external disk drives must be encrypted. This drive makes the issue very easy to handle. It's always encrypted. I think the price is acceptable for an external 4TB hardware encrypted disk drive. The Thunderbolt interface makes it very fast.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Hard Drive with USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt:

Been using Lacie products for over 10 years with no issues. Nothing is fail proof so multiple backups is a good idea. The hard drive should be replaced every Five (5) years in my opinion.

                                      Would buy again.
