Sony's 32GB HDR-PJ650 HD Handycam Camcorder with Projector in black is a Full HD 1920 x 1080 video camera that shoots at either 60 or 24 progressive frames per second and stores the video on its 32GB of internal flash memory. The camcorder features BIONZ image processor and a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor for improved low light sensitivity. The wide-angle Sony G 12x optical zoom lens provides a sharp image, and the included lens hood helps to protect against lens flares that can degrade the image. Sony's Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system with Active Mode provides for improved camera shake reduction and smooth moving images. Features such as manual touch panel focus, zebra bars, expanded focus mode, and peaking provide for greater exposure and focus control. The video camera is configured with an electronic viewfinder and 3.0" flip out touchscreen LCD.

With the HDR-PJ650 you can capture in 24p mode and use the CinemaTone gamma presets for cinematic effect. You can also take 20.4MP still photos while simultaneously shooting HD video (in some modes). You can choose from AVCHD or MP4 formats for image quality or smaller file sizes depending on your needs.

Built-in to the camera is a 5.1 channel surround sound microphone, and a manually adjustable audio level control allows improved audio recording. A dedicated headphone jack allows consistent audio monitoring while an external mic jack allows the camera to accept audio input from an optional external mic.

The HDR-PJ650 also includes a built-in 20 lumen projector that allows you project video at up to a 100" diagonal size without having to connect to a playback device. The camera has a dedicated microHDMI port that allows you to project media from your tablet, phone, laptop or other HDMI enabled device. The camera can automatically create short movies complete with music and transitions based on preset configurations. Sony's Direct Copy allows you to copy files from the camera's internal flash memory directly to an external USB drive using a Sony USB cable (external USB drive and cable are optional and sold separately). The camera can also access videos stored on the external drive for playback on an HDTV. The built-in USB connector plugs into a computer for file transfer or camera charging, with two minutes of charge time providing one minute of recording time.

The HDR-PJ650 comes with various automatic features to simplify the shooting process. For example, a Contrast AF auto focus system is included as is Tracking Focus. The Tracking Focus feature works as an extension of Face Detection and allows you to select an object with a touch of the LCD and have the focus automatically follow the selected object. If the object leaves the frame and subsequently returns, Tracking Focus will resume operation and follow focus on the selected object. Additionally when Face Detection identifies people in a scene, the camera engages an acoustic processor to reduce background noise, which combined with the camera's Wind Reduction results in making recorded voices clearer. The HDR-PJ650 includes Sony's Intelligent Auto mode, which analyzes a shot, and automatically selects the appropriate settings from among ten distinct scene modes. Other modes include Sony's Golf Shot setting to capture a few seconds of motion as a sequence of 22 high-resolution still photos

1080/24/60p and 20.4MP Still Images
Create high definition 1920 x 1080 24p/60p videos and high resolution 20.4MP still images. Image capture is handled by Sony's back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor is designed for compact cameras and camcorders. The sensor relocates the photo diodes above the support circuitry, which maximizes the light gathering area per pixel and achieves better results in low light conditions. Image processing is handled by a BIONZ image processor. In certain recording modes you can shoot HD video, and capture 20.4MP stills at the same time.
Sony G Optical Zoom Lens
This lens has a 35mm equivalent of 26.8mm at the wide end of the focal range, and the 12x optical zoom is supported by a 20x extended Zoom, with a 160x digital zoom. The HDR-PJ650V also ships with a removable lens hood to block unwanted light from entering the lens and causing undesirable flare in the shot.
Balanced Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Active Mode
Balanced Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode mounts the lens and image sensor together as one optical block floating inside the camera body. As the camera is moved the entire optical block moves as one unit, maintaining the integrity of the optical path and improving shake reduction. Another benefit of this image stabilizations system is that it also reduces vignetting (light falloff towards the edges of the frame) and lowers distortion in videos and still photos.
Color EVF
The 0.27" Color EVF features 201.6 K dot equivalent resolution for a clear, crisp representation of your video allowing increased run time when used instead of the LCD screen.
3.0" Xtra Fine LCD Touchscreen Display
The 3.0" (16:9) Xtra Fine LCD features 921K dot resolution for sharp, bright, vivid images. The LCD display also functions as a touchscreen that allows you control over camera functions, enabling you to change settings to best capture the scene.
AVCHD or MP4 Recording Formats
Users can choose between the AVCHD or MP4 format. AVCHD provides premium video that can be enjoyed on large screen HDTVs and is ideal for capturing precious memories at special occasions, family vacations and other moments you want to treasure for a lifetime. MP4 is great for those moments that you want to quickly share on your social networks or store on the cloud.
Embedded Flash Memory and Removable Media Cards
The built-in 32GB embedded flash memory can record and store up to 11 hours 40 minutes of high definition video footage (HD LP mode). The HDR-PJ650 also comes with a single media card slot that is compatible with both SD/SDHC/SDXC cards and select Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo cards. Additionally, the camera can record directly to the removable media.
Intelligent Auto Mode
Intelligent Auto mode goes a step beyond traditional auto modes by analyzing your shot and then automatically mixing and matching settings from these modes: Portrait, Baby, Tripod, Backlight, Landscape, Spotlight, Twilight, Macro, and Low Light for up to 180 different setting combinations to optimize your images.
CinemaTone Camera Presets
CinemaTone technology is used to deepen the color and recreate film-like color tones. Combined with 24p recording, you can expand your shooting into a more cinematic direction.
Built-in USB 2.0 Cable
The built-in high-speed USB 2.0 cable provides an easy connection to your computer for charging or file transfer, without the need for a separate cable. It also fits conveniently into the hand strap so it's out of the way until you need it. Charging your camcorder is faster than ever now through the USB; for every two minutes of charge time you get one minute of recording time.
Direct Copy and Highlight Playback
With Sony's Direct Copy feature, you can transfer your media files from your camcorder directly to an external USB HDD using a Sony VMC-UAM1 cable (USB HDD and Sony Cable sold separately), all without using a computer. Your camcorder can also directly access videos stored on the external hard drive for playback on your HDTV, allowing you to utilize the camcorder's handy playback features. The Highlight Playback feature identifies and compiles key scenes into a short, entertaining movie complete with music and transitions. You can even pinpoint the exact scene you want to include in the highlight reel.
Built-in Projector
The built-in projector features a maximum 20 lumen output and screen coverage of up to 100" diagonal. Project your footage directly from the camera to view your day's shooting, or share memories without crowding everyone around the LCD screen.
View Everywhere
Enjoy your favorite memories virtually anywhere. A dedicated microHDMI port allows you to connect external HDMI-enabled devices like smartphones, laptops and tablets. You can also view footage from these devices through the projector of the HDR-PJ650, and with the camera's built-in Clear Phase stereo speakers and S-Master digital amplifier technology the audio sounds more like real life.
Unlimited Storage
You can attach the camera to an optional external drive to view that drive's video content (dependent on format). You can also transfer content from the camera's internal memory to free up space, giving you virtually unlimited storage options.
Built-in GPS
A built-in GPS receiver gives you the ability to view your current location on the LCD map display, as well as "tag" your shooting locations. Tagged videos and still images can be reviewed and played back using the Map Index function on the camcorder or once downloaded to your PC using the supplied PlayMemories Home software. Additionally, the receiver automatically adjusts your camcorder's clock to the proper time zone
Accessory Multi-Interface Shoe
Sony's Multi-Interface shoe is specifically designed to offer a common interface across all of Sony's Digital Imaging products. Quickly and easily attach a vast array of accessories compatible with this interface, including optional video lights, microphones and even Sony's Wi-Fi module (Must be purchased separately).
Golf Shot
Golf Shot captures a few seconds of motion as a sequence of up to 22 still images, which can be viewed/printed individually or as a composite "sequence shot" image, which can be used for analyzing the nuances of a golf swing, tennis serve, and other fast action.
Advanced Camera Control
The video camera comes with manual control capabilities over focus, exposure, iris, shutter speed, AE shift, WB, audio levels, gamma curves. Combined with the expanded focus, zebra bars and peaking display these are tools that allow you to improve your video as you gain more control over your shooting process.

I was looking at the NX30 as a possibility for our news operations, due to the floating lens assembly. At first I thought this may be a gimmick, like so many others you can find in camera world, I also thought the same of the pico projector on the screen back. I have had this camera for a number of weeks and it has performed flawlessly as a lightweight, pocket friendly option for our mobile reporters. Field tests have shown that the image stabilization is superb in comparison to software based stabilization found in Canon and other counterparts. The image quality is worthy of mention as well, since this was a big concern in choosing a small camera for TV news operations. The compact size of the PJ650-V is a real asset in dynamic news gathering where speed, agility and shooting without a tripod is essential. This camera has already been tested in recent protests in the midwest and it performed admirably in low light and fast moving events. There are some options missing here and some cons to the camera that can be forgiven and some not. Given the price comparison to the Nx30 Model, which is better suited to the Video Journalist, some of these cons can be forgiven. The proprietary file system is not optimal and a huge slow down for pros looking to turn packages quickly, but the convenience and quality is sufficient to outweigh the extra steps in production. The projector proved to be useful, especially in reviewing footage with colleagues without crowding around a tiny screen. The controls are a little awkward and it would have been nice to see these transferred to the touch screen. Sound is also and issue - the 5.1 surround sound microphone (built in) is superb in its performance, but too much so in terms of picking up the smallest of noises - a much undesired effect in most professional production. The choices are limited here. Although Sony make an XLR adapted handle with microphone inputs and holder, this one is as expensive or more so than the camera itself, making the Sony's decision here incomprehensible.Although the camera boasts a 24 megapixel still image capability, I have yet to be able to capture anything impressive or quality with this mode. It is best left ignored, as taking a frame from the video can yield better results. Sony has chosen a proprietary attachment system for this and similar series of cameras that limits the connectivity options. Although an external cold shoe via an extension arm is possible, it makes the camera a much more clumsy proposition. I believe Sony corrected this mistake in later models, especially the NX30, but here it is a real handicap. Finally, I was impressed with the onboard light! This is not an item that one usually reviews favorably, but in this case, the PJ650V has two small LED lights on board that are bright enough to illuminate subjects with a 6-9 ft distance. In military terms this would be a close quarters camera in that it is best used up close, something that its small design facilitates all too well. I added the extra sized battery and a 64GB card to "professionalize" the capacities. So far it has proven to be a great little cam.

The PJ650 is a handy little camera that is SUPER easy to use and figure out. It has nice high quality HD footage and also has a slow motion mode that is cool. It has a couple of LED camera lights too. Here are the pros:

light weight. Great battery life. Easy to shoot with little effort. Slow mo. Some manual modes available. Manual knob in front.

CONS: 1. manual modes leave a lot to be desired. You can only change 2 modes at a time. Once you adjust the 3rd mode (which ever that is in the order you adjust them) the 1st one falls back to auto. 2. Quality adjustments are throttled. I mean, you don't have FULL control of resolution vs quality. No SD progressive mode. No 720P mode. just HD and SD and I vs P. 3. Selecting highest quality mode available, recording to my SD card caused the audio to cut in and out. Clear literal skips. Checked this on 2 playback devices. SD card is Sony UHS-1 Class 3 Speed 10 64GB SDXC (above recommended speed and class). 4. Low light causes gain to totally destroy footage. Even when using optical zoom, edges and stuff look warbly and grainy. 5. Slow motion footage is cool, but HEAVILY compressed. I'm cool with it having a limit of 2 seconds of filming time. I understand that Slow Mo is intense. But the compression is HORRIBLE. 1440X1080 and cruddy. You have to squish it down to 480P to make it look decent.

Sorry Sony. This one is for people who really don't know what they're looking for in footage.

I'm using it for some professional purposes at work and so far easy to use, compact, lightweight and I like the projector although it took me a couple of tries to figure it out. Of course it would have helped had I read the book first. It is a really nice camera this is my 14th cam and I really like this one a lot.

Surprised at the quality of the video this records. Sound is also better than expected. LCD screen is nice and image stabilization works good. Easy to set up the manual controls. Lots of options but still easy to navigate the menus. Feels good in-use.

The responsiveness of the touch screen could be better. Also the viewfinder image seems like it could be better too. Zoom controls seem too sensitive.

Overall seems like a good balance of size, price and performance. It looks good too.

I'm pretty impressed with this camera so far. I use it in a low light setting in the church at which I work. I've been very impressed with the quality of video even when lighting can and should be an issue. I've also been very impressed with the quality of audio captured without an external mic [although I am planning on purchasing an external mic anyways]. I've also used it for a few short movies, and it works great! Great price on the camera too!

I love the image stabilizer and it has great picture quality. The projector is nice but not necessary. I wish it had more display info on the screen.

Comments about Sony 32GB HDR-PJ650 HD Handycam Camcorder with Projector (Black):

The camera delivers great images, as you would expect from Sony. The image stabilization is fantastic and all the auto programing makes it easy for anyone to use but you also have all the control available for any special set-ups. The only slight disappointment is the eye level viewfinder is a little small. Overall well worth the price.

The camera is very user friendly.
                    Love the touch screen option.
                    Plenty of recording time.
                    Very good quality resolution.
Zoom very good and easy to use.
Functions easy to access and use.
I would rate the camera up there with those that are much more expensive.
The only thing I am not sure about yet is the ease of transferring video to dvd, have not tried that yet.

Very impressed so far! Great image quality, decent low light performance, and the projector is pretty great too. So much better than I thought it would be and I had pretty high expectations. My only complaint is Sony's clunky menus and not-so-responsive touch screen. And killer image stabilization.

This is an end of an era camcorder, a reasonably priced Sony camcorder with an eye level viewfinder. This replaces my older XR500 and is very similar. I do miss that the PJ650 won't let you use a card for your photos, and the internal memory for the video. Both video and photos have to go either on card or internal. I liked to take the card out to get prints. So my first trials are putting both video and photos on a SDHC card. The results have been excellent. I have found that getting to the fade-in feature takes an extra few steps using Menu. Wish there was just a button to push to activate fade. But I wanted Sony and I still rely on an eye level finder, so I was pleased to find this HD camcorder at a great price at B&H.

Comments about Sony 32GB HDR-PJ650 HD Handycam Camcorder with Projector (Black):

I bought this camcorder because I wanted to move on from home movies to more serious video-making. The 1080p 60fps video looks absolutely gorgeous, and low-light performance is more than sufficient. The zoom is really good, and the optical image stabilization is amazing. The sound is pretty good, and surround sound is quite nice. It feels pretty solid in the hand, and I get the sense that it probably wouldn't break if dropped from carrying height. There is weight to it, but I found that useful in keeping it stable during videoing. The projector is amazing the first time, but the novelty wears off after a few uses. The image is quite brighter than I expected. The resolution (640x360) could be better, but people know to use a monitor or TV for serious viewing. The hot shoe, and with it the ability to add an external flash or microphone, really makes this camcorder future-proof for any expansion of its original intention.Overall, this is a great buy for the money, and as a professional consumer camcorder, it is well above average.

I bought this camcorder to shoot weddings where the use of a tripod is difficult, but it is a great camera for all types of activities. It is small but not so small as to get lost in your hand. The image stabilization is perfect, well beyond what I expected. When set on the best quality it generates huge files, but the detail is great. The color is very good with no tonal cast at all. Using frame grabs as stills is quite acceptable but not nearly as good as a dedicated DSLR mostly due to the HD frame size.

Comments about Sony 32GB HDR-PJ650 HD Handycam Camcorder with Projector (Black):
