Comments about JVC GZ-EX515 Full HD Everio Camcorder:

I bought this camera for its purported ability to stream directly to the web via WiFi and UStream. This feature flat out doesn't work, and JVC support for this is non-existent. Try following the steps in the YouTube video JVC posted regarding WiFi connections (I had to find this video myself via a Google search), and you will eventually get to a step where they tell you to select "Add Everio Camera Shot" in the UStream Producer software. That option does not exist. In addition, I've had problems getting the WiFi in the camera to connect to my home router, and more problems getting the camera and the Everio app on my phone to work together. Clearly software is not JVC's forte. To top it all off, JVC doesn't even support the bizzarly named LoiloFit software that comes with the camera, with which I also had problems. The JVC tech told me that support for Loilofit was provided by a company called informer.com. Unfortunately, informer.com says they do NOT support Loilofit, so if it doesn't work -- and it doesn't -- you're out of luck. My last e-mail to JVC support about this situation went unanswerd. This may be a fine camcorder when used simply to record video for later playback, but if you're looking for a device with advanced features for streaming, remote operation or web connectivity, look elsewhere.

Comments about JVC GZ-EX515 Full HD Everio Camcorder:

One reviewer mentioned Windows didn't recognize the video files; my experiences with Windows 7 have been the opposite. Once I click on the STREAM folder, and double click on a file, Windows Media Player successfully opens and plays the file, including the stereo sound.

I have an old PowerDirector V7.0 I purchased five years ago, and I haven't had any problems loading the HD footage or editing it.

I have been experimenting using three Tiffen filters for daylight shooting and two filters for night time shooting. In both conditions, I use the Heliopan rubber lens hood, to reduce glare.

At night I use the Haze-1 filter and the Circular Polarizing filter. During the day I add the Neutral Density 0.6 filter.

Using these filters has reduced the glarish/almost stark electronic video look to daytime shots, and brought out the 'warmer' colors. At night outdoors, or indoors, I remove the Neutral Density 0.6 filter and this brings out the warmer colors.

I noticed during daylight shots of landscapes, that distant shots came up clearer due to reduced haze. The warmer colors became more vibrant, without compromising the various shades or hues of green from different species of plants.

Sunset time lapse shots bring out rich shades and hues of pink, orange, salmon and purple.

I have taken night shots of the Moon and realized the Haze-1 filter gave the Moon a pink atmosphere.

The red supergiant star Betelgeuse, or Betelgeux looked so good when I looked at it through the viewfinder, that I forgot to hit the 'Record' button! I'll need to correct that for next time...

Colder winter temperatures and nocturnal cloud cover, as well as changes to the night time position of the Moon and Betelgeuse means having to wait for the next favorable seeing conditions.

Another future target will be Jupiter and its four Galilean satellites; Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

I would definitely recommend purchasing the highest capacity battery the BN-VG138 (I purchased 4), the Davis & Sanford DAMXG13 tripod for its 6ft height and solid construction, and Velio CB-500 dual shoe bracket.

The main reason I got this camcorder as it has motion detect which enables me to get great close-up movies of backyard birds as they feed. I edit the clips with iMovie on my Mac and along with Mpeg Streamclip and I am able to get a 2 MB image of the bird as I scrub through the video. If I scrub through the clip using the camera to create an image or use the button to take a picture it will be less than 1 MB

Comments about JVC GZ-EX515 Full HD Everio Camcorder:

I am an amateur Australian wildlife videographer and have shot in Standard Definition (SD) using Sony camcorders.

I have been looking for quite sometime, for a small camcorder that had a native 1920 x 1080 CMOS image sensor with progressive recording capability, and a professional broadcasters' bit rate of 24 Megabit/second.

Good low light response is also a requirement because I'd like an opportunity to return to the Phillip Island Nature Park in Victoria, to refilm in true HD, the little fairy penguins that come out of the sea in the afternoon.

The GZ-EX515 meets and exceeds my requirements; the 1920 x 1080 native resolution sensor, with 60 progressive frames per second capability, along with 24Mbps AVCHD recording, delivers excellent detail, and depending on light conditions, almost film like quality images.

Freeze framing the footage shot from the side of a car, shows very little motion blur.

The low light performance is better than I expected, and there is much less noise than seen with the older generation CCD SD image sensors.

The lens is capable of up to 38x zoom, and with the O.I.S. enabled, yields excellent tight shots, even when shooting the country side from the side of a car travelling at 70mph (safety note: somebody else was driving).

I plan on purchasing a set of filters to experiment with reducing glare and bringing out richer colors, under different light conditions.

I am looking forward to visit Mt. Buller and film other native wildlife such as Kangaroos and Cockatoos.

The camera is very light in weight and feels almost like an extension of my hand. The lens when zoomed to an equivalent magnification as my eyes see a scene, closely matches the horizontal and vertical field of view; something I have found challenging to match with the older SD cameras.

The camera's lens allows installing optical filters, to remove UV Haze, or enhance colors.

Another feature included in the camera, is the capability to shoot in slow motion at 300 frames per second, at SD resolution.

I shot footage of a whipper snipper (lawn edger) and at a certain angle, it is possible to see the nylon string slowly spinning. I am looking for another opportunity to film in slow motion.

The camera allows taking snapshots during video shoots. The quality is the same as a 2 megapixel camera.

I use a 32GB Sandisk UHS-I microSD card, to allow plenty for plenty of recording space, for wild life shooting; the animals will do the unexpected on their own schedule, and not ours, requiring running the camera for a long time, to capture those unexpected moments.

The GZ-EX515 does not have built-in GPS; if you have a smart 'phone with GPS and WiFi, it is possible to interconnect the camera and smart 'phone to geotag the video footage.

The camera includes HDMI, microphone input and headphone sockets, together with an accessory shoe.

The accessory shoe may be used for a boom microphone or video light.

With the use of the correct optical filters (40.5mm) and lighting design, the camera is well suited for short film making on a limited budget, run and gun nature/wild life documentary film making.

The only things that aren't so great about it, are the lack of the capability to plug the power supply/charger to a car's power supply, and the supplied battery does not power the camera for long at the maximum image quality setting.

The responsiveness of the GZ-EX515 is very good, when on standby the camera takes about a second to be ready to shoot, giving time to start filming unusual occurrences.

Comments about JVC GZ-EX515 Full HD Everio Camcorder:

It will take a few months to run the camera through it's paces but so far this camera has met or exceeded my exectations. I haven't used any of the other cameras in this catagory but if someone says that they have a better one I would have my doubts.
