Comments about JVC GZ-E505 Full HD Everio Camcorder:

Over the past few months I have been transitioning from still images to video recording of birds and other species of wildlife. Living in an area where all species of wildlife are extremely leery of humans often requires higher power zoom ratios to "pull in" the subject. One of the features on the GZ-E505 that enticed me to order this camcorder was the 38x optical zoom and 65(62)x dynamic zoom. JVC's website claims at 38x for the EX500 Series that there is no "picture degradation" and "HD resolution" is maintained when using the Dynamic Zoom up to 65x. On the unit I received I find this claim to be a quite stretch. Be aware that no two cameras, lenses or camcorders of the same make and model produce identical performance results, and a different unit of this model may produce noticeably different results than my findings.

The added magnification of the dynamic zoom intrigued me so I began my lens/image quality test with the video quality set at the highest quality and the programming set to 'intelligent auto'. At these settings the maximum zoom magnification is 62x. Strong backlighting generally brings out the worst in optics, so I began recording images of birds high in the bare branches of trees against a very bright, white overcast sky. Chromatic abrasion was readily apparent at 62x, with strong color fringing in both the blue and red wavelengths. There was very obvious image degradation. As expected the effects of the color fringing gradually lessened as magnification was reduced and the image quality improved greatly. In clips of whitetail deer feeding in a snow-covered field, a slight blue fringing began to appear at 22x and above, but for the most part did not noticeably degrade the image. The red fringing was well controlled and was barely noticeable in these clips. In all fairness, two other consumer grade camcorders produced similar results when tested in a similar manner.

In less extreme lighting conditions of relatively even ambient lighting (without strong high lights or strong back lighting) results improved considerably. Subjects ranged from birds on feeders or in bushes, to deer on the edge of a wood lot, to a colorful still life setup absent of bright whites and deep blacks, and to everyday scenes such as our dog running in the yard. I was pleasantly surprised when numerous clips produced little to no detectable chromatic abrasion, even at 62x. At lower powers the images can be very pleasing.

After several weeks of testing my conclusion is that the performance of this camcorder is good to very good under most lighting conditions but that it does not do well at the extremes. This is a common problem in consumer grade camcorders with lenses lacking low dispersion glass elements. Being aware of this makes it a work around problem for me.

Many of the other features I have yet to test. The filter threads were a must have and work smoothly, as were the (as yet untested) integrated headphone output and Mic input.

It will take several months of working with this camcorder to learn all its strengths and weaknesses, however to date it appears the GZ-E505 will meet 80% of my needs, hence the 4 star rating.
