The PowerShot A1400 Digital Camera from Canon is a compact point-and-shoot camera with a 16MP CCD sensor and the DIGIC 4 Image Processor, which provides clear, well-balanced, high resolution images and HD 720p video. It houses a 5x optical zoom lens that equals a 28-140mm focal length in the 35mm format equivalency. This is a versatile autofocus lens that runs from wide angle to telephoto. The maximum aperture at the wide-angle end of this lens is f/2.8 which will provide clear imaging in low light. In addition, the ISO sensitivity reaches 6400 and the camera provides digital image stabilization which reduces the effect of camera shake and helps to provide crisp images in low light.

With a dedicated movie button, 720p HD video is easy to access and ready to go at all times. In addition to 720p video at 25 frames per second, the A1400 can shoot 640 x 480 VGA video at 30 frames per second.

The A1400 provides an optical viewfinder for composing images as well as a 2.7" LCD screen for composition and playback. New ECO mode conserves the batteries by dimming down the LCD when not in use. Smart AUTO is available to allow the camera to control all settings based on 32 predefined shooting situations and Scene Modes such as Fisheye Effect and Toy Camera Effect offer creative options. The A1400 is powered by convenient AA batteries.

I was looking for a replacement for my older Canon A590 IS and bought the A1400 because it is just about the only compact camera that is still available with an optical display. That said, it is not really an upgrade except for having a slightly wider zoom range and a higher pixel count. Canon has cost reduced this product to the max, removing the USB cable that was included with the essentially identical A1300, and the nice user guide that came with older models like the A590IS. That said, if you are not expecting too much and know how to use it properly, you can get very good images with this little beauty. However, you MUST download and study the manual if you want to get the most out of the camera. It is not difficult to use, but you have to learn the menus. If you can't be bothered reading the manual, then just leave it in full auto mode and be prepared to accept what you get.

Enthusiasts will want to put the camera in Program (P) mode to get access to the more useful features. However, there are no Aperture or Shutter priority modes like the A590 had. The maximum ISO sensitivity that you can set is 1600, and you will probably find that images taken at that setting will be rather noisy. Best image quality will be achieved outdoors or in brightly lit scenes with the ISO forced to 100.

The flash in the A1400 does not seem to overexpose nearby objects like the A1300 did, so that seems to have been fixed. However, there are significant lag times for writing images to the card (even with a fast card), reviewing images, and for the flash to recharge. This is not the best choice for fast action sports photography or low light situations in general.

To improve battery life, get a set of Sanyo Eneloops; you will find they work better and last longer than typical off-the-shelf alkalines PLUS you will save a lot of money.

Operating hints: you cannot focus manually, but you can choose spot AF and have the camera auto-magnify the AF point so you can see if you have achieved focus or not (focus can be slow in certain situations). I like to turn on the 3x3 grid to aid with composition and help ensure that the camera is leveled properly. Have fun!

I maintain that to take good pictures YOU HAVE TO HAVE A CAMERA! SLR's and bridge cameras generally have better quality and more features than point and shoot's, but you are less inclined to carry one with you all the time therefore missing that once in a lifetime foto op. The A1400 has a viewfinder (not great but adequate) which makes taking action shots easier and is easier to use than a screen in bright sunlight.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1400 Digital Camera:

I bought this camera for my wife to replace an old Canon Elph. She insisted on one that still had a viewfinder, which greatly limited our options. This camera is designed to be operated in "auto", where manual overrides are buried in a menu and are very limited. That would be OK if the auto setting produced good results, but so far it does not. The camera tends to drive up the gain in every situation that isn't full sun. This gives a grainy soft image that isn't as nice as our old 4 megapixal camera. Sure, with 16MP you can enlarge image a lot, but the end product is still of poor quality. I let several people use it and they all complained about trying to get the camera to focus on what they intended. I found that it would take several attemps at holding the shutter button down half way to get the camera to focus on the right thing. This takes away the simplicity of a point and shoot camera. Overall, I would say this camera is a disappointment.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1400 Digital Camera:

Me and my wife are using the predecessor models of this camera, A1200 and A1300, and now bought A1400 as spare, since this model line is already discontinued. Of course, they are not high-end cameras, but the quality pretty is high, images are OK. But some important properties of these three camerase are rather unique in nowadays. They use simple AA batteries, available everywhere, so we don't need to carry extra rechargeable battery packs, and also they are equipped with zoomable optical viewfinders (not perfect, but good enough to see your object under the bright sun, when camera screen is basically useles.

I bought this camera to take photo's in multiple locations for ID cards. The fact that it takes AA batteries is a huge plus and makes it easy to travel with and not rely on an electrical outlet to recharge batteries. The controls are not overly complex and easy for anyone to pick up and use. The display is easy to view indoors and out. Picture quality is sharp with good color balance.

A wonderful small point and shoot WITH a viewfinder!!!! I know that it is considered old fashioned to want something more than a washed out - reflective screen but I like to take pictures out of doors. The camera has all the feature that I need for general travel - and it's light, uses AA's at a very low price. I used to carry a bag with lens, motor drive, flashes. extra body, etc. no more - this one suits me just fine.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1400 Digital Camera:

I purchased this camera for work because I can take low resolution photos that are perfect for e-mail and it uses AA batteries. I USE rechargeable batteries in the camera, but always have spare AA Alkalines in my car, so I never worry about power. The camera takes good photos in low light with the flash on and even the photos taken at the lowest resolution are clear in 4 x 6 size. There are plenty of options for shooting in various conditions. You can't ask for more at this price point.

                  Viewfinder !!!

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1400 Digital Camera:

A vanishing breed, camera with a viewfinder. On those bright sunlit days a viewfinder is a godsend when trying to get that kodak moment. Not for the professional of course, but for those vacation/family moments. Adequate zoom with an easy operation makes this camera a must have. The price is an excellent plus.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1400 Digital Camera:

The Canon A1400 is an inexpensive point and shoot. It is very good value for its price. Used in Auto mode it is very simple to use and gives good results - great for the beginner or cazsual user. It also has many advanced features found in more expensive models. Unfortunately these are complicated to access (see the online manual)although once accessed, they work well, I believe. You get what you pay for.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1400 Digital Camera:

It was an 'impulse' buy, at such a low price, because it has an optical viewfinder, which is getting rarer these days. Turns out it has a special effect called "miniature" which I love. It has surprisingly good quality pics and video for such a low price.

Bought this for my 7 yr old grandson that kept wanting me to teach him to shoot with my big DSLR. This is just right for those little hands and he has taken some nice shots. This has some creative zones I hope to teach him as well. Will come back at a later date and let you know how he and the camera are working together. I especially like the optical view finder you hardly find in a point and shoot camera.
