The Canon 32GB VIXIA HF G20 Full HD Camcorder shoots 1920 x 1080 Full HD video at 60i, in native 24p and 30p. With the 24p frame rate option you can give your footage a cinematic look. Using Cinema-Looks Filters you can boost that film look with multiple built-in adjustable filters. The HF G20 features a Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens with an 8-Blade iris for more professional-looking video and stills. It has a 30.4 - 304mm (35mm equivalent) focal length. The camcorder is also equipped with a Canon HD CMOS Pro image sensor that supports improved low-light performance and a wide dynamic range.
The HF G20 has 32GB of built-in memory that supports up to 12 hours of HD video. It also features two SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots that you can use for Relay Recording, which automatically switches video recording to the memory card when the internal drive becomes full. The camera features Dynamic SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization as well. Other features of the HF G20 include a 3.5" touch panel LCD, a 0.24" color viewfinder, a 58mm filter diameter and Smart AUTO function.
The HF G20 has a number of professional shooting functions as well. These include custom key and dial, composition aids and advanced control like manual exposure, aperture priority and shutter priority. It also supports Audio Scene Select and a highly adjustable internal microphone. For more professional audio, the HF G20 has headphone and microphone jacks. It has HDMI and USB connectivity as well. Plus, the Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe supports attachment of a variety of shooting aids including lights and microphones.
Tv/Av: Use the dial to adjust shutter speed (Tv mode) or aperture (Av mode), as needed. In this mode the key has no effect.
Manual exposure: When manual control is selected, the dial can adjust aperture, shutter speed, or gain. Select items to adjust, such as aperture or other settings, with the key.
Exposure Lock can be set on or off as can the AGC Limit.
Either color bars or color bars and test tone can be selected and recorded using a menu. The color bars comply with the SMPTE standard. -12dB, -18dB or -20dB can be selected as the test tone.
The white balance control has six available presets settable through a variety of day and artificial light conditions (Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent H, Fluorescent), as well as two manual white balance settings. Color temperature may also be manually set from 2000K to 15,000K in 100K increments for more precise adjustment.
Gain may be manually set from 0dB to 24dB in 1dB increments. Additionally, Auto Gain Control Limit allows you to set the maximum gain limit for the image sensor's sensitivity. With this function, brightness and noise can be balanced as required, and image quality can be maximized in low-light situations.
The zoom speed, as controlled by the rocker and handle controls, is selectable, with a choice of variable or 16 fixed speeds, with fast/normal/slow settings for greater control while zooming in various situations.

I use this camera for B-roll with weddings. The camera is very light and easy to use . The only problem I have is that the software provided dose not convert the cameras odd file formats to full hd video formats for easy editing.

Hobby. First use was at weekend festival at city park. Beautiful picture. Use it with a monopod and quite stable. Also loads up video and photos quick and easy on Mac to Apple's Final Cut Pro X and iMovie -- Only hassle was that less than 3 months after it's release a newer model came out (!?) -- but it's more expensive and I'm not interested in GPS or WiFi...so all is good.

Comments about Canon 32GB VIXIA HF G20 Full HD Camcorder:
This is the best non-pro video camera I've ever had. It's easy to use and light weight yet full featured with excellent low light performance. The mic is very good and there are simple settings to adjust how the mic "sees" the audio. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a top notch but not pro video camera.

Comments about Canon 32GB VIXIA HF G20 Full HD Camcorder:
I like the video quality of the cam, nice features, options, etc. However, what I don't like is the fact that while shooting in AUTO MODE I cannot remove display text, titles, etc. from the screen whilst doing a straight shoot / direct recording to a DVD recorder without all that junk appearing on the recorded DVD. Who wants all that text on the played back DVD? I realize you can remove the display text - info while recording in manual and cinema mode - WHY not in the manual mode. Videographers with challenged vision will be using the auto mode more than the manual & cinema mode...camcorder needs firmware -software update post haste.

Camcorder has some nice features, good low light, dual cards, battery is horrible (more money to spend), hot shoe not feasible...sound is not the best. Takes good video; not for sports or high action. Over priced...too expensive!

Comments about Canon 32GB VIXIA HF G20 Full HD Camcorder:
This new camera is just perfect for my uses in outdoor remote broadcast B roll inserts in a show that is being done in a studio, but will require additional outdoor shots. We have found that the quality is equal to studio HD equipment but much smaller and much easier to handle [i.e. from the back of a pickup]. Of course that is not even mentioning the thousands that are saved from investing in another studio grade camera [not to mention the fragility of the studio equipment].

Comments about Canon 32GB VIXIA HF G20 Full HD Camcorder:
The two main features I didn't get when I purchased the VIXIA HF S11 were native 24p and compatibility with the 5.1 channel microphone.
Along with those two features, the HF G20 delivers many additional upgrades. First and foremost is low-light performance; really seeing a nice improvement. The HF S11 did well when in Night Scene mode, but can't compare to the HF G 20.
The HF S11 lacked a viewfinder which I actually liked (not a huge fan). But, there are cases where having one would be good. For me though, it will remain virtually unused.
Having dual SD card slots was key this time around. Really like the simultaneous record option; creating an instant backup.
Cannot put my finger on it, but the plastic around the LCD screen seems a bit cheaper in feel as compared to the HF S11. Seems sturdy enough though.
Wish the touch-screen was a bit more sensitive (I'm used to the sensitivity on iOS devices). Still, a nice improvement over using physical buttons to navigate the menus.
Attaching the SM-V1 5.1 microphone is seamless; sound settings automatically switch.
Using a 3rd-party "re-wrapping" utility, I can now easily bring in footage directly from the SD card into Final Cut. I really don't miss the transcoding stage nor messing with telecine.
Final note on 24p... It's not for everyone, but it was of huge importance to me. My entire pipeline is now 24p-savvy (acquisition with the HF G 20, editing in Final Cut, burning to Blu-ray with playback on a player that outputs native 24p and display on a plasma monitor running at 72 Hz)

Comments about Canon 32GB VIXIA HF G20 Full HD Camcorder:
the G20 from Canon makes me fall in love with Canon all over again. I have owned and operated several HD machines, including the very first JVC HD when it first came out. The more pro-level HD video cameras have distinct features that newer generation of "compact" camcorders can't come close: like XLR audio feed, time-code, low-light sensitivity etc. Thanks to the thoughtful improvement Canon has made from the G10 predecessor, the new G20 gives you startling close qualities to the prosumer models found in Sony, Canon, and JVC.
G20 shoots well in low-light because of its CMOS pro sensor. for audio, you can actually connect XLR external mics through low-impedance hookups to give a warm sound reproduction.
The machine is small yet steady, giving a smooth handle when panning. The zoom could be a bit more subtle, and the speed control can use more precision (maybe I am just used to the larger HD machines).
Looking forward to having a serious petite gadget for traveling and casual shooting.
