The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon is a standard zoom lens designed especially for DSLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. This lens has a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25.5-105mm, providing wide-angle to portrait-length angles of view for use in everyday shooting situations.
This lens features a fast f/2.8-4 maximum aperture to help better control your focus plane and to aid in low-light shooting. A built-in Optical Stabilizer also helps in low-light situations by providing a four-stop reduction in the appearance of camera shake, which is ideally suited for macro and telephoto shooting as well. The Hyper Sonic AF Motor delivers fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing that greatly benefits video applications. This AF motor can also be instantly deactivated by rotating the manual focus ring, giving you the ability to fine-tune your focus manually. The integration of two FLD, one SLD, and three aspherical lenses in the construction helps to reduce the effects of chromatic and chromatic axial aberrations, and Super Multi-Layer coated elements help to increase contrast for sharp, clear imagery.
As part of Sigma's new Contemporary line of lenses, this lens is designed using Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) materials to help reduce the overall weight and size of the lens barrel by about 30% without compromising on optical integrity, rigidity, or overall durability.
For updating lens firmware and fine-tuning its nuances to best-suit your personal shooting, this lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock. The dock allows you to specify certain parameters and other settings through the Sigma Optimization Pro software, such as AF speed and focusing limitations.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:
General purpose lens for crop sensor walk about. Offering a good range (albeit less than the Nikon 16-85) with excellent sharpness, resolution and color in the center of the image at all FL's. However, on the wider end of things, you cannot get rid of slightly softer sides, even at F9-F11 (the sweet spot for the 17 - 20mm focal lengths).
Better sharpness in the center and intermediate areas that even the 17-55 Nikon.
The macro is good too, offering some creative freedom that the Nikon does not offer.
Unlike most Sigma lenses I have owned (about 20), this is the first to hit focus on just about every shot. AF is fast and silent (nearly), and the OS offers great handhold ability when needed.
Overall conclusion then: Someone coming from the Nikon 16-85 will find this a good step up IMO, and even from the Nikon 17-55/2.8 it offers some performance benefits.

This lens is absolutely wonderful, i love it. The build quality is really good. Zooming is really smooth. Focusing speed is quite fast considering i have a d3100. I can't really think of a flaw for this lens. It's perfect for it's price range and it's fairly light.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:
I bought this lens for use on a Nikon 5200 purchased for my granddaughter. I much prefer it to the standard 5200 kit lens. Build quality is much greater, zoom range is larger, the aperture is bigger and it has image stabilization. I'm quite pleased with the image quality of this lens and would recommend it to the beginning DSLR photographer.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:
This is the perfect primary travel lens for people who like shooting anything from insects, to flowers, to people, to art, to architecture. It is not perfect, but with a bit of perimeter cropping, I love the results. Pictures are clear and sharp in the center and the speed allows food shooting without a flash. I highly recommend this lens for anyone who travels...
