The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon is a standard zoom lens designed especially for DSLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. This lens has a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25.5-105mm, providing wide-angle to portrait-length angles of view for use in everyday shooting situations.

This lens features a fast f/2.8-4 maximum aperture to help better control your focus plane and to aid in low-light shooting. A built-in Optical Stabilizer also helps in low-light situations by providing a four-stop reduction in the appearance of camera shake, which is ideally suited for macro and telephoto shooting as well. The Hyper Sonic AF Motor delivers fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing that greatly benefits video applications. The integration of two FLD, one SLD, and three aspherical lenses in the construction helps to reduce the effects of chromatic and chromatic axial aberrations, and Super Multi-Layer coated elements help to increase contrast for sharp, clear imagery.

As part of Sigma's new Contemporary line of lenses, this lens is designed using Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) materials to help reduce the overall weight and size of the lens barrel by about 30% without compromising on optical integrity, rigidity, or overall durability.

For updating lens firmware and fine-tuning its nuances to best-suit your personal shooting, this lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock. The dock allows you to specify certain parameters and other settings through the Sigma Optimization Pro software, such as AF speed and focusing limitations.

Contemporary Lens Line
This lens is the first lens produced as part of Sigma's Contemporary line; deeming it lightweight and compact while still exhibiting high optical performance. This lens' wide range of focal lengths makes is suitable for a variety of shooting applications. Utilizing a smaller OS unit and an optimized distribution of optical and electronic elements, the size of the lens barrel is able to be reduced in size by approximately 30%. This reduction in weight is also afforded in part through the use of TSC materials in the barrel construction. This material offers high durability and rigidity but with less bulk than metal components.
Macro Shooting Capabilities
This lens features a maximum magnification of 1:2.8 and a minimum focus distance of 8.7" / 22cm, giving a working distance of just 2.2" / 5.5cm when shooting at the 70mm focal length.
Optimized Lens Construction
Two FLD (F Low Dispersion) glass elements, one SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass element, and three aspherical glass elements, including a double-sided aspherical lens, are integrated into the lens' construction to help improve overall image quality. The combination of these elements provides a reduction in both chromatic and axial chromatic aberrations throughout the focusing and zoom ranges. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also applied to lens surfaces to reduce the appearance of lens flare and ghosting, which helps to maintain image contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications.
Optical Stabilizer
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system is incorporated into the lens to provide a four-stop-equivalent reduction in the appearance of camera shake. This enables greater handheld shooting possibilities when working in low-lit situations, at longer focal lengths, and when working with macro subjects.
USB Dock
Compatible with Sigma's USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software for fine-tuning your lens' performance, updating its firmware, and better suiting it to your needs.
Other Features
  • A large maximum aperture of f/2.8-4 helps with low-light photography and also offers greater control over your focus plane for selective focus shooting.
  • A brass bayonet mount provides reinforced durability at the connection point between the lens and your camera.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I purchased this lens to upgrade from my D3200s kit lens. While the Nikon 15-55 is an Ok starting point this blows away expectations. At work I use the Tamron 12-50 with the constant 2.8 and honestly this lens is leagues sharper, with a much more accurate and faster auto focus.I feel like this lens would be very versatile, well versed for portraits and events. The decently fast aperture, impressive build quality and impressive image quality ensure this lens fights above it's weight class.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

A week back I got this lens and carriedout some low light and night shots both outdoor/ indoor with my Nikon D7000; the performance was more than expected. However, when it comes to portrait I would suggest to go for big aperture like f/1.8 and offcourse that would cost more. OS and HSM is really outstanding though I experienced AF stuck at some stage but later it worked fine. Overall a best lens for entry or enthusiast level.

The macro capability of that lens is quite good. If you need a short focus distance, wide angle and a standard zoom range, this lens have it all. I did not find a nikon lens with all that.

Previous version of that lens were not very durable under rough condition (humidity, dirt, impact). I hope this one would be better.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

For the price range and the catagory, this is a well considered lens. It is a bit faster than a mid-range kit lens and the build quality is on a high level. The only problem, especially for Nikon users is the availability of the 18-105 VR lens. At the same focal lengths and f stops, the Nikon either matches, or betters this Sigma and has the extra 50mm (in DX terms) reach which makes it much more versatile and useful as an all-purpose mid-range lens and because of it's kit-lens status, the Nikon lens can be purchased used in premium condition for ½ the cost of the Sigma. I purchased both lenses at the same time and put them through real world comparative tests and the Sigma was returned. Once again the Sigma is a very good lens, but for me, the Nikon won the race.

I have the Nikon D3200 dSLR with 24Meg pix APS-C sensor. With my lens, it has a snug fit to camera body. Sharpness is well within my expectations. The outer filter ring does block slightly the focus bright light on the camera body. having the macro function is a big plus. The company is very proud of their made in Japan designation.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I was attracted to the Sigma 17-70mm by its f2.8-4 aperture range and several positive reviews. I have used the lens with my Nikon D7100 and D3200. The lens is sharper than both the 18-55mm and 16-85mm Nikkors. The zoom ring is very smooth and shows no sign of creeping with the lens pointed up or down. The focus ring does rotate when auto-focusing but this has not caused any problems. The lens focuses extremely close, down to 8.6". With the lens zoomed out 70mm and focused at 7.2" there is only about 1.5" from the front of the lens and the subject, making difficult to light the subject.
Overall it is an excellent lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I recently took stock of my gear and decided that given a couple of upcoming trips where I wouldn't care to lug around my whole bag, that I would reconsider my 'walk around' lens. For a number of years that's been a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom. It's a fine lens and I have no truly serious complaints about it. However, it is heavy and does suffer from barrel creep and like a lot of lenses, the hood wants to come off.I also recognized that I rarely used it fully zoomed and also that I did occassionally have some interest in doing macro photography. So, considering these needs I reviewed available walk around zoom lenses for my Nikon D90 and decided to give the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro a try. I typically like to shoot nature close ups, landscapes and will be doing urban architecture with it on an upcoming trip and find that so far, it provides a nice balance of functions.Focusing is smooth, rapid and precise as well as being very quiet. Unlike the reports of other users, I have not experienced the reported fuzzy edges or barrelling effects in my limited use.It seems sturdy and well constructed. The lens hood snaps on preventing it from coming off when you have the camera slung lens down (as I often do) and it does not seem to suffer from lens creep. Also it doesn't seem to get lens barrel shadowing when shot using the pop up flash on the camera (something I rarely do).All in all, a good purchase and I would recommend it to other photo enthusiast types. I've attached two images; a hibiscus bloom shot at 2.8 at 17mm from about 3 inches, and a sundown shot, f10 at 50mm.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

This lens replaced my Nikon 16-85mm and my Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 VC. Both of those lenses had an annoying property where they required different autofocus adjustment settings for the extremes of the zoom range. Adjusting for 16mm meant 85mm was just out of focus, for example. The USB dock with this Sigma ensures that this lens won't have this issue, if it does, it's easily fixable.

What point is having sharp optics if you can't get your subject in sharp focus every time?

Optically this lens is as good or better than both of those lenses. Sharp to the edge across all focal lengths, except maybe the corners wide open at 17mm. Even then, this Sigma is as good or better than those two lenses (especially the Tamron). Unlike my 16-85mm I have no hesitation to use this lens wide open. Be sure to use a RAW converter that can properly correct lateral chromatic aberration (like Lightroom 5)

Fantastic lens. Couldn't be happier. Wanted to fix my AF issue, and ended up with a better lens. Great match with the Nikon D7100's high resolution & acuity.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I use this lens as my general walkabout on my D5100. I primarily shoot architecture and nature, so focal range works well for me. It has a nice weight and feel to the components. The fairly tight action on the zoom, which I like, gives a nice feeling of control.

The macro (+/- 9") and fast f/2.8 make it a great overall versatile lens. Good sharp image quality, not fantastic, but good for the price. Autofocus is reasonably fast. No vignetting, but focus can go a little soft around the edges sometimes. Bokeh seems fine to me, although other reviews seem to complain about it.

The OS optical stabilizer is not all that amazing. I've only done a handful of tests so far but I'm not seeing 4 stops reduction in shake. Overall very pleased with investment.

This has become my main walk around lens. The extra stop in speed allows enough selective focus for nice portraits at 70mm plus focuses close enough to cover the flowers etc. I couldn't do this with the 16-85 nikon. It seems sharp all the way to the corners, even at 17mm which some reviews claim it isn't. I'm highly pleased with the performance and usefullness of this lens!

I was looking for a step-up lens from a kit lens. I researched various sources and came to rely on DXOMark. While kit lenses are rated 9-11 of 40 points, this lens scored 16-17. I have had the lens for a couple of months and it has exceeded my expectation. The images are very sharp, the stabilization effective and the focal lengths very useable. It has become my "go-to" lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

First thing you notice is that this is a pretty lens. Sigma's re-design is elegant and understated; it's very attractive in my opinion. The fit, finish, and materials are all excellent, especially at this price point. This is the sort of product that can give plastic a good name. The action of the turning rings and switches feels precise and controlled. In terms of ergonomics, the only complaints I have are that the zoom ring is a little stiff (over-dampened), and the auto-focus rotates the focus ring and my fingers sometimes feel it move if I'm not careful about placement.

For versatility, the 17-70 is a home run. The ideal walk-around lens. It's very sharp across most of its range. With a relatively fast max aperture and optical stabilization, it handles low light situations extremely well. The auto-focus is fast, accurate, and very decisive. The bokeh is a very pleasant surprise; that, coupled with the focal length range, enables the 17-70 to do admirable portraiture. BTW, don't let anybody tell you differently: you'll have no problem generating background blur with f/4 at 70mm.

The lens is wide enough to capture decent landscapes, but this is probably the weakest part of the 17-70's repertoire. Why? Because as mentioned by others, the edges get a little soft at 17mm (up to around 20mm) and stopping down doesn't help very much. It's not horrible; in fact, in my opinion, it's at least as good as the kit lenses the Sigma will replace for most buyers. But compared to the end-to-end sharpness in the middle part of its focal length range, which is superb, it's a noticeable fall-off. For critical landscape work, I'd probably reach for another lens. This is the only thing keeping me from giving this lens 5 stars.

The macro capability is a really nice bonus. I think it's great for "casual" macro work -- close-up photos of flowers, coins, jewelry, and such. But the minimum focusing distance combined with the reduced magnification at 70mm from lens breathing, means that your working distance with this lens is extremely small. Small enought to create lighting problems and scare off tiny critters you're trying to shoot. If I were doing "serious" macro work I'd want a more serious macro lens, but for just dabbling with it like I do, this is great.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

Has become my primary walk-around lens. Love the size and weight. And it has great focal length range for most of my pursuits. Recent twilight/night photo shoot produced very sharp images. Still exploring its capabilities.

This is a great short/medium zoom for APS-C sensor cameras. Fast and sharp. IT is also small and light making it excellent for travel and walk-around. Pair it with a good 70-300 lens and you have a great combo.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

General purpose lens for crop sensor walk about. Offering a good range (albeit less than the Nikon 16-85) with excellent sharpness, resolution and color in the center of the image at all FL's. However, on the wider end of things, you cannot get rid of slightly softer sides, even at F9-F11 (the sweet spot for the 17 - 20mm focal lengths).

Better sharpness in the center and intermediate areas that even the 17-55 Nikon.

The macro is good too, offering some creative freedom that the Nikon does not offer.

Unlike most Sigma lenses I have owned (about 20), this is the first to hit focus on just about every shot. AF is fast and silent (nearly), and the OS offers great handhold ability when needed.

Overall conclusion then: Someone coming from the Nikon 16-85 will find this a good step up IMO, and even from the Nikon 17-55/2.8 it offers some performance benefits.

I bought this lens for use on a Nikon 5200 purchased for my granddaughter. I much prefer it to the standard 5200 kit lens. Build quality is much greater, zoom range is larger, the aperture is bigger and it has image stabilization. I'm quite pleased with the image quality of this lens and would recommend it to the beginning DSLR photographer.
