The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon is a standard zoom lens designed especially for DSLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. This lens has a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27.2-112mm, providing wide-angle to portrait-length angles of view for use in everyday shooting situations.

This lens features a fast f/2.8-4 maximum aperture to help better control your focus plane and to aid in low-light shooting. A built-in Optical Stabilizer also helps in low-light situations by providing a four-stop reduction in the appearance of camera shake, which is ideally suited for macro and telephoto shooting as well. The Hyper Sonic AF Motor delivers fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing that greatly benefits video applications. The integration of two FLD, one SLD, and three aspherical lenses in the construction helps to reduce the effects of chromatic and chromatic axial aberrations, and Super Multi-Layer coated elements help to increase contrast for sharp, clear imagery.

As part of Sigma's new Contemporary line of lenses, this lens is designed using Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) materials to help reduce the overall weight and size of the lens barrel by about 30% without compromising on optical integrity, rigidity, or overall durability.

For updating lens firmware and fine-tuning its nuances to best-suit your personal shooting, this lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock. The dock allows you to specify certain parameters and other settings through the Sigma Optimization Pro software, such as AF speed and focusing limitations.

Contemporary Lens Line
This lens is the first lens produced as part of Sigma's Contemporary line; deeming it lightweight and compact while still exhibiting high optical performance. This lens' wide range of focal lengths makes is suitable for a variety of shooting applications. Utilizing a smaller OS unit and an optimized distribution of optical and electronic elements, the size of the lens barrel is able to be reduced in size by approximately 30%. This reduction in weight is also afforded in part through the use of TSC materials in the barrel construction. This material offers high durability and rigidity but with less bulk than metal components.
Macro Shooting Capabilities
This lens features a maximum magnification of 1:2.8 and a minimum focus distance of 8.7" / 22cm, giving a working distance of just 2.2" / 5.5cm when shooting at the 70mm focal length.
Optimized Lens Construction
Two FLD (F Low Dispersion) glass elements, one SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass element, and three aspherical glass elements, including a double-sided aspherical lens, are integrated into the lens' construction to help improve overall image quality. The combination of these elements provides a reduction in both chromatic and axial chromatic aberrations throughout the focusing and zoom ranges. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also applied to lens surfaces to reduce the appearance of lens flare and ghosting, which helps to maintain image contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications.
Optical Stabilizer
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system is incorporated into the lens to provide a four-stop-equivalent reduction in the appearance of camera shake. This enables greater handheld shooting possibilities when working in low-lit situations, at longer focal lengths, and when working with macro subjects.
USB Dock
Compatible with Sigma's USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software for fine-tuning your lens' performance, updating its firmware, and better suiting it to your needs.
Other Features
  • A large maximum aperture of f/2.8-4 helps with low-light photography and also offers greater control over your focus plane for selective focus shooting.
  • A brass bayonet mount provides reinforced durability at the connection point between the lens and your camera.

There are so many things to like about this lens. I've been looking for a new walk around lens for a while and I did not have a huge budget. This lens fits the bill. Whenever, I use it, I keep saying to myself, "I really like this lens!" The lens is well made, does not feel cheap and is fairly light weight. Bokeh is amazing as well and depending on the situation, you can get some nice effects even at F5.6 which I was surprised at. I think my only slight criticism is that occasionally it can be a little slow to focus in tricky lighting or closeups but it's not a major compliant. I would highly recommend this if you can't afford L glass which was the case with myself.

I love my Sigma 18-35 1.8, but I wanted something with more range, that was still wide. I figured I would try this 17-70. It's not an ART lens, but I knew that, and I knew it was 2.8-4. However I though that it would stop down naturally when zooming, like with my video camera, instead it's like digital hard stops. Now I'm often just reframing, but this is still jilting, and also it sometimes seemed the camera was trying to compensate for this, even though I was in manual mode. I just figured it would be a loss of light while zooming in, but I almost wonder if this thing could be 2.8 all the way, except for whatever communication it has with the camera that makes it stop down to 4 on the long end. Conspiracy theories aside, this lens has a great range for an APS-C camera. I used it on my 70d and 60d. Images are sharp, colors look great. It's not full time manual, meaning you can't try to adjust focus when it's AutoFocus mode, it makes a noise if you try. I can do this with my 18-35 though, without breaking it.I really got this for video, although for stills it would be great too. I just needed a way to cover more range without having to constantly switch lenses and possibly miss shots. I just can't get past f4, at least not on the 70d, and if I was stuck at f4 and down, I would probably get the 24-105 Sigmaa. This lens worked pretty well, but I definitely found myself using a 2.8 lens more, especially for indoor work, or of course the 1.8 18-35 Sigma. If you keep your work stopped below f4 anyway, this might be a great lens, but just expecting more from Sigma at this point. Why not fixed at 3.2 or something?? That I could buy into as an Art lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I use this lens as an all purpose, walk around lens. It is a relatively light lens yet performs a macro function well and the same goes for the wide angle, medium and portrait lengths. I bought this lens for these things and the only complaint I can think of is blaming it for not being something I didn't ask for when I made the purchase, such as a longer lens.

Extremely versatile lens that takes the place of kit lenses. I found this lens to be very sharp. The macro capabilities work well. The reach of the zoom and the aperture range work exceedingly well for various forms of photography. This really is a great all-around lens. Very pleased with this purchase.

This is the third version of this lens I have purchased to use when photographing weddings. A great lens in low light, especially with optical stabilization. Good zoom range for groups and general candids. And this lens is a full stop faster than the Canon version.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I shoot a lot of sports and school events. Doing group shots and trying to keep mom and her phone camera out of the frame was always an issue, so when my old 28-70/2.8 was stolen I replaced it with this lens. I felt that the extra zoom range on the wide end would more than compensate for losing one stop of light on the long end. Unfortunately, what I found I was actually giving up was 2-3 stops across the whole zoom range because this lens is just not acceptably sharp until it's stopped down to f8 (f5.6 if you only care about the center of the frame). I kept the lens because the zoom range really is very convenient and the image quality is fine when I'm shooting in daylight or able to use flash and thus stay around f8-f11, but if you need to shoot wide open for lighting or depth of field reasons, look elsewhere.
This is a significant upgrade over kit lenses, and I have recommended it to people on that basis. Just don't expect pro quality wide open.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

It's a replacement for the EF-S 18-55 kit lens that came with my camera 7 years ago. I received it 2 days before my son's 8th Grade Graduation. I ordered it with a Hoya 72mm UV filter. I shot about 120 photos. The photos are real sharp indoors and outdoors. I got about 4 photos that showed vignetting, it may be due to the Flash or it may also be from the UV filter. You may have to remove the lens hood on certain shots depending on the angle the light strikes the front of the lens. At 17mm, I was able to cover about 30 people; I was 4-5 feet from the first row. It's definitely a good lens in events, it has just the right, yet useful range. I have yet to try shooting landscapes and architectures and I'm sure it'll do just fine. The lens hood came off a couple of times whenever it autofocused. Install the lens hood correctly by switching the AF/MF switch to MF, hold the lens so it won't turn while screwing in the hood until it clicks or the horizontal line on the hood aligns with the horizontal line on the lens. The lens cap tends to pop off, too. Other than this, I'm very happy with this lens. It's built like a tank, yet not as hefty, it's definitely a vast upgrade from the kit lens. This is the second lens I ordered from B&H, they have excellent customer support.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

So, I was looking for a 2.8 lens and had a photographer friend tell me about this Sigma 17-70. I was iffy about buying a non Canon lens (yes, I am THAT guy) but I couldnt beat the price. My thought process was, that I could buy this for the good price and if I liked it I would sell it and get something similar from Canon. Well, after the first weekend of shooting with it I was blown away with the quality and the fact that it has the same direction rotational zoom as my Canon lenses!

I shoot motorsports events, moving cars and beautiful restored muscle cars and hot rods at car shows. The details in these cars and thousands-of-dollar paint jobs are key to bring to life with pictures. I left it on all weekend at my first event with the lens and was very happy with it! I have it on my Canon 50D and its going to be hard to take it off and put another lens on from here on out.

DO NOT hesitate when looking into this lens, it is sharp and easy to use. Well worth the money. IF i HAD to say 1 downfall it is that when im rapid shooting with it (as a car races past me) there will be 1-2 blurry images from the 7-10 shots taken...that is the only downfall I noticed but with so many shots taken it is easy to delete the few blurry ones and keep the good ones.

I only recently got this lens. I bought it to use for event photography, though I've not used it for that yet. I've used it for long exposure night photography, landscapes as well as portraiture. The lens worked flawlessly. Focuses quickly as well as it has a very nice and smooth bokeh. The colors and contrast in the photos are better than expected.

This lens represents a nice compromise of speed, range, and weight, while being very sharp and affordable. It balances well on a T3i and the image stabilization is effective.

I did a lot of research before choosing this lens and I'm so happy with my decision. Very versatile, fast and sharp. You can do beautiful venue shots with available light, it has macro capability and works well for portraits. Love it. If you are not able to foot the cost of a canon lens, this is a great option. A great match for my Canon 60D.

A very happy match for my new Canon 60D body. I shot most of my last wedding with this lens. I spent a lot of time shopping on line. Ideally one might want a Canon lens, but third party lenses are a great way to go if you cant foot the price tag of a Canon Lens. I love this lens, its wide enough for venue shots, fast enough for great quality images in low light and works well for portraits. High quality lens. I am very pleased with the results and more importantly, so is my client.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I matched this lens with my Canon 60D. I have been using this lens for the past couple months for landscape and wildlife photos in S. W. Colorado. So far, I really like the color that I get in my photos. The only problem, which is slight, is the focus at 70mm. Some photos are just not clear. However, his may be an issue with the lighting I work with here in the mountains or settings I use and not the lens. I have to work on this. I am not a pro nor can I use fancy language as others to describe this lens. I can just say I like better vs my Canon lens.
