The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon is a standard zoom lens designed especially for DSLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. This lens has a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27.2-112mm, providing wide-angle to portrait-length angles of view for use in everyday shooting situations.

This lens features a fast f/2.8-4 maximum aperture to help better control your focus plane and to aid in low-light shooting. A built-in Optical Stabilizer also helps in low-light situations by providing a four-stop reduction in the appearance of camera shake, which is ideally suited for macro and telephoto shooting as well. The Hyper Sonic AF Motor delivers fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing that greatly benefits video applications. The integration of two FLD, one SLD, and three aspherical lenses in the construction helps to reduce the effects of chromatic and chromatic axial aberrations, and Super Multi-Layer coated elements help to increase contrast for sharp, clear imagery.

As part of Sigma's new Contemporary line of lenses, this lens is designed using Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) materials to help reduce the overall weight and size of the lens barrel by about 30% without compromising on optical integrity, rigidity, or overall durability.

For updating lens firmware and fine-tuning its nuances to best-suit your personal shooting, this lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock. The dock allows you to specify certain parameters and other settings through the Sigma Optimization Pro software, such as AF speed and focusing limitations.

Contemporary Lens Line
This lens is the first lens produced as part of Sigma's Contemporary line; deeming it lightweight and compact while still exhibiting high optical performance. This lens' wide range of focal lengths makes is suitable for a variety of shooting applications. Utilizing a smaller OS unit and an optimized distribution of optical and electronic elements, the size of the lens barrel is able to be reduced in size by approximately 30%. This reduction in weight is also afforded in part through the use of TSC materials in the barrel construction. This material offers high durability and rigidity but with less bulk than metal components.
Macro Shooting Capabilities
This lens features a maximum magnification of 1:2.8 and a minimum focus distance of 8.7" / 22cm, giving a working distance of just 2.2" / 5.5cm when shooting at the 70mm focal length.
Optimized Lens Construction
Two FLD (F Low Dispersion) glass elements, one SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass element, and three aspherical glass elements, including a double-sided aspherical lens, are integrated into the lens' construction to help improve overall image quality. The combination of these elements provides a reduction in both chromatic and axial chromatic aberrations throughout the focusing and zoom ranges. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also applied to lens surfaces to reduce the appearance of lens flare and ghosting, which helps to maintain image contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications.
Optical Stabilizer
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system is incorporated into the lens to provide a four-stop-equivalent reduction in the appearance of camera shake. This enables greater handheld shooting possibilities when working in low-lit situations, at longer focal lengths, and when working with macro subjects.
USB Dock
Compatible with Sigma's USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software for fine-tuning your lens' performance, updating its firmware, and better suiting it to your needs.
Other Features
  • A large maximum aperture of f/2.8-4 helps with low-light photography and also offers greater control over your focus plane for selective focus shooting.
  • A brass bayonet mount provides reinforced durability at the connection point between the lens and your camera.

There are so many things to like about this lens. I've been looking for a new walk around lens for a while and I did not have a huge budget. This lens fits the bill. Whenever, I use it, I keep saying to myself, "I really like this lens!" The lens is well made, does not feel cheap and is fairly light weight. Bokeh is amazing as well and depending on the situation, you can get some nice effects even at F5.6 which I was surprised at. I think my only slight criticism is that occasionally it can be a little slow to focus in tricky lighting or closeups but it's not a major compliant. I would highly recommend this if you can't afford L glass which was the case with myself.

It's a great overall, lightweight lens for photography, but not well suited for video applications, which was my primary reason why I bought this lens.
The HSM, Hyper Sonic Motor wasn't all that quiet and smooth in auto focusing on my Canon 70D. Also, I wish that auto focusing ring would be wider/bigger and smoother for better fine tune capabilities in manual focusing.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I had been looking at this lens and wanting to get one for a while and finally went and bought it. So happy I did. Went to a garden show over the weekend and got some really beautiful shots. Tack sharp images, fast autofocus, good OS. Took some shots of my grandson in low light situation and was very pleased with results since this is one of the resons I purchased this lens. Would definately recommend this as a step up from a kit lens.

Using this on my Nikon D7100. I must say I shot a wedding with it. I got fantastic results! also used it for video. its not made for fast/quiet autofocus in video (no swm) but if shoots great video as well. for the price its so worth it. Fast autofocus for pics. you can spend 900-1300 $ on a lens but the difference is not worth that extra 500-700$+ in my opinion. you get your bang for your buck

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I began to upgrade my equipment and needed a non-prime lens. I had purchased a used 30mm ex and fell in love with sigma. I read a lot about this lens and it was a toss up between the canon 17-40 or this one. I chose this lens and instantly fell in love although there is a little lens creep. Pictures are sharp and i mean sharp. I do a lot of night photography and althoug there is slight flare its easly edited. Over all this is my everyday lens.
Other lenses sigma 30mm, canon 50mm, lens baby spark.

I bought this lens to be a walk around, general lens. I used it to take some portraits and loved it. The low light capability is a big step up from the kit lens. The macro is also a very nice to feature to have. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

Just got this lens for my Canon 7D. I had the older version which I never liked. This lens is about 1/3 smaller than the older version and has a much nicer finish, and just like many of the reviews here say it does take better quality images. The image stabilization seems to work better too. I tried the lens hood out immediately due to other reviewers complaints. The hood works fine,,,does not feel loose or wobble like some people have reported. It doesn't feel quite as tight and secure as my older Sigma 30mm hood, but I think Sigma actually improved it by making it smoother to take on and off the lens (in other words, when you 'lock' on the hood to the lens with the clicking sound you don't have to wrench the lens to try to take it off). All I can think of is that maybe one of the other reviewers didn't know you have to rotate the lens hood until it 'clicks' onto it's final position. You can lightly hit it, bump it and it doesn't move at all. If you threw it at a wall or dropped it very badly the thing might fly off but you should be babying this lens anyway,,it's that nice. A '5 star' improvement over the older version !!!

This is a very positive step up from a "kit" lens. Only negative is it steps from 2.4 to 3.2 very quickly when zooming. Otherwise it is very sharp and the autofocus works very well on a Canon body.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I'm not ready to buy the top-tier pricey super fast lenses for my Canon Rebel T3i, so I love Sigma lenses for the excellent overall quality, and price -- but the quality can vary!! I've tried out five Sigma lens, and now own three --two returned. First lens was a Sigma wide angle 10-20. Love it for creative close-ups, vivid color. Second lens was a Sigma 50-150. SUPER love it for fast-moving event shooting. Though low-light can be an issue, that's the trade-off. Next I thought I'd like something a little lighter for less active events, like walk-around street shooting. So I tried out the 17-70mm f/2.8, but surprised by the difference in image quality -- the highlights were noticeably blown out, and Googling around I found this to be an issue with the lens. I just wanted the lens to render perfectly out of the box, like my other two Sigmas!! Next I tried the Sigma 17-50mm. Same issue -- highlights blown out. So I returned both for the 5-star rated Sigma f/1.4 35mm (which though pricey) takes fantastic shots, has excellent bokeh, vivid color, and crispy focus, and will become my go-to walk-around lens, and the third Sigma in my bag.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

rented this lens as i am debating my next "all purpose" lens for video. considered tamron and sigmas 2.8.... but im sold on this lens. blown away with this new sigma lens as i have an older sigma which i never really liked. i really wanted a lens with 2.8 all the way, but the 70mm and macro is a huge benefit for me. i shoot wedding video so the extra 20mm comes in handy. i messed around with the macro shooting some stills and was AMAZED with quality. i literally was able to focus on a subject (wedding ring) TOUCHING the glass!! build quality much better than the older sigma lenses. for $[$] you cant beat this lens. only 4 stars because i wish it was 2.8 all the way.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I bought the lens to replace a Tamron 17-35 that was a good lens.
This lens is amazing! Solid build, focuses quickly and the images I get are tack sharp.

I love photography, so I am interested in great images, not the technical details. There are plenty of people that do a good job of providing all the specifics.

When researching, I saw some complaints about the lens hood being easy to knock off. Mine is fine and I would have to work at it, to lose it.

This lens fits well into my lens selection and gives me a nice wide, fast lens that has become my walk around lens.

It is a great bargain at the price. I am glad I purchased it.

I am an amateur photographer, have been using this lens over 2 years, and had chances to compare with nikon kit lenses. I am overly satisfied with the performance. Very versatile, fast and accurate lens, good value for the money.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I fall in the prosumer category. Do a few paid gigs and a lot of personal shooting. I couldn't afford the Canon L lens and think this is the next best option. And it has image stabilization which give me three times the usable shots. Did a shoot yesterday for a client and had used a similar Tokina without IS and had a lot more freehand shots come out with the Sigma. Doing a wedding this weekend and I feel confident that this lens will take care of most of the shots. The only downside is the lens hood must be on absolutely correct or it will show up in the corners of your images. The auto-focus tends to hunt in some situations but for the $ difference I very happy with the Sigma.

Ok, I tested this lens on a 5Dmk3 not a crop body. Although the t2i was not up to the IQ of this lens, not the sensor or processing engine. With the the 5Dmk3 I could see the capabilities of this lens, despite not being a full frame lens. Just test run to check lens IQ. I found the contrast was up to 6400 ISO on par with the 5Dmk3 and will be a excellent walk around lens for my new 70D when it arrives. No full time manual focus, or overide, the focusing ring is really small, and I had to use fingers, couldn't use a palm. the AF ring moves when using AF. the hood can be bumped or moved, doesn't lock on tightly. love the build and size plus price! want to see my samples, vikta11 on youtube.

The lens has worked great but it seems to have trouble with the auto focus when the distances are extreme. I'm not sure if this is due to the lens, an attached filter or my learning to use the lens,

I have had the Sigma 17-70mm OS version for quite some time.. i LOVE THE LENS.. great macro shots, nice contrast, sharp! great body construction.when the new "C" contemporary version came out.. with a new look. new specs.. I was very excited as the way I can see it.. sigma would merely just take the old versio and improve it..So here are a few of my key things~-PROS--the body was very nice, new construction, felt solid, smaller and lighter.-the camera worked very well wide open and was sharp, especially from f2.8(sunny day)-F7.1-F11-CONS--macro shots seemed to lose some IQ-macro min. focus seemed to be worse (even though on paper it was supposed to be better) than the previous version-at 70mm had IQ issues and also focusing issues.. the focusing hunted and sometimes never got the right points in focus.. i'd have to take 1-3 pics at a time of a subject to ensure i got it right.my general feeling of this lens was that when I was walking around with it.. it felt very inconsistant, and I paid $[$] after tax on this product.. I'd expect it to be better than the previous version.. and I honestly did not have that feeling. The previous version felt more all around more constant and just more reliable.Granted, I did get good shots w/ the new "C" version but just general overall opinion.. I didnt feel like this upgrade was warrented.returned the new "C" version .. stuck w/ the previous version.but dont let my opinion sway you.. like I said.. i was able to get good pics with it.. and maybe I received a bad lemon when it came to macro and at 70mms~ try it out for yourself.
