The Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon is a telephoto zoom lens featuring a fast, constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. This lens is the first lens designed under Sigma's new Sports line of lenses, making it well-suited for fast-moving subjects such as wildlife, nature, aviation, racing, and other similar situations.

Featuring a dust- and splash-proof construction, this lens is ideally-suited for use in outdoor and adverse conditions. Its design features rubber focus and zoom rings as well as conveniently located mode switches to enhance usability with the lens. A built-in Optical Stabilizer provides a four-stop-equivalent reduction in the appearance of camera shake, helping to enable better handheld usage and low-light shooting. The Hyper Sonic AF Motor provides fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing for faster performance that also benefits video recording.

This lens is also compatible with the Sigma USB Dock, which allows you to use the Sigma Pro Optimization software to fine-tune certain lens settings to your own shooting needs. The ability to limit focus range, alter the AF speed, and modify the OS system is afforded through this, as well as the ability to easily update the lens' firmware.

Sports Lens Line
This lens is the first lens produced as part of Sigma's Sports line, making it ideally-suited for capturing fast-moving action with high precision. Its telephoto-length zoom range and fast maximum aperture make it especially useful for sports photography as well as wildlife, birding, and other fast-paced applications. Also benefitting these shooting scenarios is a wide range of customizable functions availed through the use of the Sigma USB Dock.
Optimized Lens Design
Well-suited to outdoor photography, a dust- and splash-proof construction enables use of this lens in adverse conditions. Joint parts, such as the mount, focus and zoom rings, and switches, are sealed to provide this resistance and improve overall durability. Parts of the lens have also been optimally designed for more comfortable use, including textured rings and well-placed switches for more efficient operation. A brass bayonet mount is also used to increase the durability at this connection point, giving more strength and rigidity between the camera and lens system.

The lens construction integrates two FLD (F Low Dispersion) glass elements and one SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass element to help reduce color aberrations and sagittal coma flare to improve overall image quality. Lens elements also feature a Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, which helps to improve image contrast and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
USB Dock Compatible
This lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning and personalizing certain functions of the lens to fit your personal shooting style. A focus limiter can be set to constrain your lens' focusing distances to suit the distances at which you are shooting. Additionally, this lens features an inner focusing and zooming configuration so the physical length of your lens does not change during use; which greatly benefits the use of certain filters such as a polarizer.

The USB Dock also allows you to customize the speed at which the autofocus system performs, how active the Optical Stabilizer system is during shooting, and allows you to easily update the lens' firmware.
Optical Stabilizer
The built-in OS (Optical Stabilizer) system enables a reduction in the appearance of camera shake up to the equivalent of four stops, resulting in a long lens that can easily be used handheld and low-light conditions. The OS system is divided into two modes; one for general shooting applications, and one that is better suited for panning shots of moving subjects. The OS system can be further adjusted to suit your needs through the use of the USB Dock.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications. This AF motor can also be manually overridden at any time by rotating the focusing ring, giving you the ability to fine-tune image sharpness through manual focusing.

Comments about Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I use this lens for weddings.

It covers a great range for longer churches. Before this lens, I would have to switch between my 70-200 and 300mm, this lens covers the useful range of both lenses so now I only need the Sigma.

It's sharp wide open and the OS is phenomenal. All that said, it weighs 10.5 lbs when coupled with a d800 so be prepared.

Comments about Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I read reviews for about a month and I made the decision to go for it and I'm glad I did. I also purchased the Sigma x2 converter and USB Dock. I shoot with the NIKON D7100 and I have not had any issues at all. It's nice to be able to shoot in low light and this lens will certainly let you do that. I also like that it zooms inside the barrel so the length stays the same. It is very heavy but I don't see that being a negative as there is a lot of big glass inside that will let you get the shot you want. I shoot hand held in good light without any problem. In lower light with the converter I find the mono pod or tri pod is best. The Mourning Dove and Tiger photos below I took hand-held without the converter and any flash on an over-cast day.During my research I searched on flickr for the lens and converter and was convinced after seeing the results people were getting. If you are new to photography it might be too much to handle as it's more the photographer than the equipment to take a good photo, however, this lens will get you closer.

I use this lens primarily for sports/action shooting as well as wildlife. It's a great lens for both. Produces very very sharp images. Definitely not a lens you'll want to shoot with off a monopod or tripod. It's a very heavy lens.

Comments about Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

Even at full retail - this is a great deal. I picked mine up very slightly used - and for a fraction of the price.

I shoot a lot of stock car racing (local dirt tracks and NASCAR) - and this lens is outstanding for high speed action.

I look forward to using this lens for wildlife also - wish I would have had it when I went to Churchill, Manitoba to shoot the Polar Bears.

The lens is heavy, but properly braced can be handheld. As stated by another reviewer - I can't downgrade it for being heavy - as that's part of the deal to get the optics. A monopod or tripod is welcome for extended shooting.

Part of my decision to acquire this lens is a future African photo safari.

Comments about Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I have been using Nikon's 80-200 f2.8 in the past 10+ years and decided to upgrade to a slightly bigger one which is why I purchased this lens.

This is a very sharp lens and the auto-focus is swift. The build quality is excellent. Though I have no scientific data but after a rough comparison I think it is sharper than the Nikon 24-120mm f4 lens I have.

Given its sharpness, zoom range and wide open aperture, f2.8, needless to say the size and weight of this lens is a bit overwhelming. However, just like photography itself, it's a compromise. If one wants sharpness, wide range zoom and open/fixed aperture, I personally think this is an excellent choice.

I would NOT mark "heavy" as a con because a good lens needs sturdy construction and glass itself is no light weight matter. So heavy weight should be expected. Whoever intends to use this lens needs either to use a monopod/tripod all the time or go to gym to work out often and hard.

The only con I could come up with this lens is probably its case. The case itself is too bulky and not necessary. I hope it could be a bit more form fit and compact so I could actually use it to carry the lens around on a tracking/camping trip.

Comments about Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I've been shooting professionally for over 12 years, I've owned many lenses Nikon, Canon, Tamron, Tokina and now Sigma. I used to shoot surfing but my bread and butter has been 4WD and off-road travel for about 5 years now. I had a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRI which I should have kept but when the VRII came out I sold it and upgraded. I may have got a bad copy, but my Nikon 70-200 VRII has never been as good as I had hoped. It's just not as sharp as my old VRI. I was looking at this new Sigma lens and loved the possibility of the 120-300 focal length. After reading reviews I went and got my hands on one.

Originally thinking it'd replace my 70-200, I quickly realised that it wasn't going to be the case but a totally new lens with a different purpose. It's a big piece of kit, weighing in at 3.5kgs, it's a beast. And a very solid, beautifully constructed one at that. Sigma have stepped up the game with this thing at a very good price. Ok now lets get to the test results.... I shot my car parked outside in the sun using a tripod.

It's heavy, definitely not a hang off the shoulder type lens like the 70-200..

The Autofocus is as fast as the 70-200. The stabiliser works like a dream.

120mm @ F2.8 The Sigma is slightly sharper than the nikon 70-200 with a nicer bokeh, but has a very slight amount of CA (color fringing) Where the Nikon has none. Super easy to correct in Lightroom.

120mm @ F5.6 The Sigma is still sharper than the Nikon AND it has LESS vignetting.

200mm @F2.8 The Sigma has LESS CA than the Nikon, nicer bokeh AND is sharper!

200mm @ F5.6 The Sigma is still sharper with less vignetting than the Nikon.

300mm @ F2.8 There is no CA and is on par with the sharpness of the Nikon at 200mm at 2.8.

300mm @ F5.6 Once again the Sigma is as sharp as the Nikon at 200mm @ F5.6

WOW.... I actually can't believe it. Even if my 70-200 needs calibrating for that exact sharpness, the Sigma out performs it in other areas with less chromatic abberation, less vignetting and a nicer bokeh!

I won't be selling my 70-200 like I thought, but it'll only get used now when I can't be bothered carrying an extra 2kgs!

Even if this lens was the same price as a fixed 300mm 2.8 it'd still be a great option with the zoom. As it is cheaper than the fixed 300, this thing is amazing. Do some more research and come to your own conclusion, this lens won't be for everyone BUT if you are looking for a fast cheaper tele-zoom.... Look no further.
