  • Macro Shooting Capabilities

The Pentax MX-1 Digital Camera (Black) is a compact point and shoot camera featuring a 12 megapixel 1/1.7" backside-illuminated CMOS sensor. This sensor is capable of producing high quality, detailed imagery with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 12800. Pentax body-based Sensor-Shift and Pixel Track Shake Reduction systems can also be employed to further benefit difficult light shooting by compensating for the effects of camera shake.

The built-in lens features a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-112mm, providing a wide breadth of shooting possibilities. A maximum f/1.8-2.5 aperture is ideally-suited for dimly-lit shooting as well as providing greater control over your depth of field when shooting. The lens construction incorporates four aspherical elements to help reduce the chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range, giving way to imagery with greater clarity and quality.

For image playback, review, and monitoring, a 3.0" 920k-dot LCD is available and features a tilting design to facilitate easier usage from high and low viewing angles. Further contributing to an overall successful design is the inclusion of genuine brass top and bottom plates for greater durability as well as a more aesthetic appearance reminiscent of a film camera.

The MX-1 is capable of recording full HD 1920 x 1080 video at 30fps, as well as standard HD 1280 x 720 video at either 60fps or 30fps. Playback can be done on either the LCD monitor or an HDTV when connected via the HDMI port.

1/1.7" 12MP BSI CMOS Sensor
The MX-1 utilizes a 12 megapixel 1/1.7" backside-illuminated CMOS sensor to produce high quality imagery with especially notable low-light performance due to a maximum sensitivity of ISO 12800. The low-light shooting abilities are further extended by the integration of Pentax body-based Sensor-Shift and Pixel Track Shake Reduction (SR) systems. This method of image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake up to the equivalent of three stops.

The image sensor also aids in intelligent focusing capabilities by using technologies such as Fast Face Detection, Smile Capture, and Blink Detection. The combination of these modes enables you to take images of people in a quick and intuitive manner without sacrificing focus or exposure quality.
smc Pentax 28-112mm f/1.8-2.5 Lens
A fast f/1.8-2.5 4x optical zoom lens is featured on the MX-1, giving a 35mm-equivalent zoom range of 28-112mm. The wide maximum aperture benefits both low-light shooting as well as enabling greater control over depth of field. This lens also integrates four aspherical elements in its construction to reduce the appearance of chromatic aberrations and improve overall image quality.

Macro shooting capabilities are also afforded by the lens, and allow you to shoot as close as 0.4" / 1cm away from your subject.
Full HD 1080p Video
Full HD 1920 x 1080 video capture is supported up to 30fps in the high quality H.264 compression. Creative video playback options are available, such as high-speed and slow-motion playback options, and connection to an HDTV is also possible via the HDMI port.
Compact and Functional Design
The MX-1 is a compactly designed camera, yet it retains the design functionality reminiscent of larger, interchangeable lens cameras. Textured mode dials, exposure dials, and other physical features give this small camera an effective physical stature. Genuine brass covers are used on the top and bottom segments of the body to provide durability while also instilling a refined aesthetic appearance akin to a film camera.

For monitoring and reviewing imagery, a 3.0" 920k-dot LCD monitor is incorporated into the design and features tilting capabilities (down 45° and up 90°) for use from both high and low viewing angles. A dual-axis level gauge is also available and visible on the monitor for ensuring straight horizons when shooting in either vertical or horizontal orientation.

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews on this MX-1. I guess Pentax is a low awareness brand, and this model is a bit late to the party, for this class of camera.

Overall, this camera is what internet reviewers would call "a keeper", as long as you take photos to post online, or print photos which aren't poster size. It has a large host of features, an excellent lens with a reasonable focal range which lets in a lot of light, an attractive look and feel, and, oh yes, it takes good photos too.

The lens lets in a lot of light and is "wide open" even at 110mm which is very very helpful in low light. It also means that bokeh aka out of focus appearance, is smooth and attractive, for this sensor size (in general, the bigger the sensor, the more attractive the bokeh)

The only real negative is the weight and size. The brass top and bottom may be a marketing plus, but I'd prefer to skip the brass and make it 100grams lighter. Also, the lens sticks out a bit, especially with the third party auto lens cover I've stuck on front- it's still pocketable, but only just.

This camera has a nice design in vintage style, it is easy to use and it is really good value for money. I don't like its software interface; too old-fashioned.

Comments about MX-1 Digital Camera (Silver):

I saw the review of this by Chris Nichols on TheCameraStoreTV. That guy knows how to sell cameras. This thing has everything. A useful zoom range at low f stop. First rate macro. Small. Lots of dandy features. My brother and I were given K1000s when we were in our 20s. We shot everything with those cameras for years. This thing duplicates the K1000 but with all the lens you need. The fact that the lens is not interchangeable is sort of a relief. I may own 40 lenses. I immediately bought one for my brother and am about to buy one for myself. At this price, how could I not.

Comments about MX-1 Digital Camera (Black):

This is a handsome, well-built boutique point and shoot that could have been great with an eye level viewfinder. I also don't care for having to go through the menus to change scene modes.

In full auto mode the flash should deploy automatically.

The pictures out of this camera will not disappoint you, especially at the current price for this model.

Comments about MX-1 Digital Camera (Black):

At this price point, I don't think you can do any better than the MX-1. This is a solid, well made camera. All the controls operate smoothly and precisely. It's fairly large for a compact camera but it will fit in a large pocket or purse, or belt pack, or whatever. Just not a shirt pocket, or a jeans pocket. The lens and sensor are perfectly matched to one another, producing exceptionally good results for a small camera. No, it's not a DSLR, but within reason you can get some excellent photographs with this camera. Yes, it only has a 4X zoom, but within that range you get great photos. I would rather have excellent vacation photos without the super telephoto shots, than mediocre vacation photos with a 20X zoom compact. I own several compact small sensor cameras, a mirrorless APS sensor camera, and two DSLRs. I am quite happy to use this camera for casual shooting and more than pleased with the image quality.

I've been using it around town and so far love the quality of the pictures and the portability. I also love the vintage look of this camera.

I bought this camera because I wanted manual controls and high quality pics without the bulk of an SLR. So far I'm loving this camera! Fast startup, fast focus, and beautiful pictures. I love the weight and sturdiness of the body and it just looks so retro! Menus are easy to navigate and the camera is easy to use.
The only things I don't love are: slow write times, built in panorama function is awful, and, due to the placement of the neckstrap attachments, the camera does not hang vertically (but there are some leather half cases with neck straps out there that I plan to buy which should remedy that problem)
All in all, I am extremely happy with my camera!
