Comments about Minox 7x42 MD C Monocular (Black):

I took a leap of faith based exclusively on Minox brand reputation to buy the 7x42 MDC monocular given that I couldn't find significant hands on reviews. I certainly do not regret the decision. First I ordered a cheaper monocular with similar specifications (Celestron Oceana 8x42) from another store, but came with an air bubble in the compass and questionable workmanship overall. With the price and quality of a toy, it went back the same day.
The Minox monocular was available only at B&H, at all the other stores was backordered to about 3 months. The white version was not available yet (Jan 2014). I must appreciate the prompt delivery and the technical details provided by the customer service over the telephone from B&H.
I purchased the monocular for use in boat races to quickly spot the marks and take a compass reading. Tested already in two major ocean regattas, the monocular proved extremely useful for that purpose. Compared to a stabilized binocular that is expensive, bulky, and battery hungry, the 7x42 monocular does not provide the same magnification nor image stabilization. However, I had no issues spotting the inflatable marks at few miles away in flat to moderate ocean conditions. The lower magnification (7x compared to 12x) and the high quality of the optics that are giving bright and sharp image with a large and deep field of view made spotting of the marks much faster.
The Minox monocular will fit in a larger pocket, but I wish it was more compact (maybe a 7x30-35 version). The size is adequate for a 7x42 optical instrument, basically it is a half of a binocular with same specs. I found the compass on the top to be slightly unusual positioned for the hand grip and I tend to constantly cover the white spot where the light comes into the compass.
Focusing with one hand is almost impossible. Although smooth, the adjustment ring is firm, maybe because is waterproofed, but there is a pleasant surprise: the depth of field is so good that I never had to adjust the focus during the boat race. Also has a large white mark on the ring that will tell if the instrument is already in the same focus position. The relatively firm focus ring will prevent accidentally changing the position in the pocket.
The compass is accurate and it was matching the reading of the boat instruments. The integrated mil graded reticle is useless for my purpose but others may find it useful. For distance reading I'm using a performant laser range finder.
The front lens cap is useful, but the back lens cap was lost during the first race, therefore dust is unavoidable on the ocular. The adjustable eye relief cup comes handy when used with sunglasses and definitely higher quality than a foldable rubber cup. I had no problem using it all day with polarized sunglasses on.
The wrist strap is not that handy, especially wearing sailor gloves; a neck lanyard would be a more useful in my opinion. It also came with a hard case (clamshell with a zipper) mainly for storage, and instructions that include how to use the mil-graded reticle.
Overall I'm very satisfied with the performance and the quality of the relatively inexpensive Minox 7x42 MDC.

Comments about Minox 7x42 MD C Monocular (Black):

This is a marine monocular with a reticle scale intended to calculate the distance to ships at sea, and the height of ships at sea. And it requires some math calculations. The brightness, color rendition, resolution, and clarity are superb. It's perfect for range finding the distance to offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico or Emirates.
