The Nikon D5200 Digital SLR Camera features a 24.1MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 3 image processor to produce high quality imagery while delivering fast performance to all camera functions. The combination of these two technologies is a native sensitivity up to ISO 6400, which is then further expandable to ISO 25600. The processing speed of the EXPEED 3 also contributes to a fast continuous shooting rate of 5fps.

A 39-point autofocus system enables the D5200 to acquire precise focus quickly across the image frame, and nine cross-type points are centrally located to give even more accurate focusing abilities to critical subject matter. In regard to exposure handling, a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor is utilized by Nikon's Scene Recognition System to analyze both color and brightness values within a scene to best determine exposure settings as well as white balance, i-TTL, and also focus settings.

HD video recording is supported in multiple frame rates and formats up to full HD 1920 x 1080 at 60fps. Manual exposure control is possible during recording through modifying the shutter speed or ISO settings and continuous auto focusing is also possible when working with the full-time servo AF mode. Audio can be recorded using the built-in stereo microphone or through the use of an optional external microphone, both of which can be manually controlled across 20 levels during recording.

Image playback and live view monitoring is possible with the 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor, which features tilt and swivel capabilities for better use at high or low angles. For eye-level viewing, a pentamirror optical viewfinder is built-in for viewing and composing scenes quickly and intuitively.

The D5200 features a variety of built in imaging technologies, such as Active D-Lighting and HDR capabilities, to further enhance the look of your imagery while shooting. Scene modes, Picture Control, and Special Effects can also be applied to imagery to give a more creative, aesthetic appearance to your work. For instantly sharing your photos and video, the D5200 is compatible with the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter (optional) for wirelessly connecting your camera to an Android or iOS mobile device.

Imaging Technology
At the heart of the D5200 is a 24.1-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor and the EXPEED 3 image processor. The combination of these two technologies enables high resolution imagery with great detail and quality. The power and speed afforded by the image processor also provides high ISO performance up to an expandable range of 100-25600. Noise reduction technologies are employed during use to help render low-light photography with the utmost sharpness and clarity.
39-Point Autofocus System
A 39-point autofocus system, with nine cross-type sensors, is employed to acquire precise focus quickly and easily. The AF system is equally effective with both still and moving subjects and utilizes a unique 3D tracking system to detect and memorize the color of your subject to effectively track its movements.
2,016-Pixel RGB Sensor and Scene Recognition System
The exclusive Scene Recognition System paired with a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor is able to analyze color and brightness information within a scene to automatically determine precise exposure, i-TTL flash, white balance, and focus settings. By analyzing both color and overall brightness, imagery appears more naturally-rendered and detailed compared to purely measuring brightness values.
High Continuous Shooting Rates
The D5200 is capable of capturing full-resolution still images at a continuous rate of 5fps. This speed affords you the ability to easily track moving subjects or record fast-paced events. The optical viewfinder benefits this shooting speed by allowing you to more instinctively pan with your moving subject, whereas shooting in live view will render the shooting nearly silent for more discreet applications.
Vari-Angle LCD Monitor
The 3.0" LCD monitor features a vari-angle design, which allows you to tilt and swivel the monitor to better suit shooting from high or low angles. Its 921k-dot resolution provides high definition quality for more precise monitoring and image review. The menu navigation has also been simplified from past models, giving a more intuitive system of navigation through camera functions. Additionally, three background color choices are available: black, brown, and blue.
Full HD Movie Recording
The D5200 is able to capture Full HD video up to 1920 x 1080 with multiple frame rates up to 60i/50i. The vari-angle LCD monitor is well-suited to video monitoring and provides a natural method for composing scenes and following moving subjects. An HDMI type-C output is also available for connecting your camera to an HDTV for movie playback.

When working in manual mode while recording movies, exposure can be easily controlled through modifying the shutter speed and ISO settings. Continuous auto focusing is possible while recording when working in the full-time-servo AF mode (AF-F), which also provides subject tracking for better controlling your focus plane in fast-paced shooting situations. Face-priority AF is also available while recording HD movies.

A built-in stereo microphone can be used to record sound during filming, and can be controlled automatically or manually across 20 levels. These levels can be viewed before and during recording. Additionally, the D5200 supports the use of an external microphone for even greater control over your recorded sound with movies.
Built-In HDR and Active D-Lighting
For capturing images with immense contrast, built-in HDR is able to extend the D5200's native dynamic range capabilities by recording multiple exposures and blending well-controlled shadow and highlight exposures into a single image. HDR is most-suitable for stationary subject matter, whereas Active D-Lighting can suit moving subjects while still providing exposure and color control benefits.
Scene Modes, Picture Control, and Special Effects
16 different scene modes and six picture control settings allow you to further refine the look of your still imagery in-camera. Scene modes include: Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close up, Night portrait, Night landscape, Party/indoor, Beach/snow, Sunset, Dusk/dawn, Pet portrait, Candlelight, Blossom, Autumn colors, and Food. Picture Control settings include: Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, and Landscape.

When working with HD movies, you can apply Special Effects to alter the look of your videos. These effects include: Selective color, Miniature effect, Color sketch, Silhouette, High key, Low key, and Night vision.
Compatible with WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter
The D5200 is compatible with the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter to provide wireless connectivity to your camera. This enables you to instantly share imagery from your camera to Android or iOS mobile devices for sharing on imaging sites or through email. Additionally you can use your wireless device as a remote viewfinder and shutter release for taking photographs with your camera set at a distance.

The color accuracy and the sharp detail of the D5200 is stunning. See examples below. I've owned the D70, D60, D5000, and the D5100 (all purchased at B&H) and this is by far the best of them all. The autofocus is quick and changing the various settings is very easy.

A couple of the reviewers have complained that there is no histogram when reviewing the pictures. If you go to the playback menu and chose display options you can select various options to be displayed, one of which is the histogram. To see the histogram press the down arrow on the wheel around the OK button. Each time you press you will see one of the options that you chose.

The only thing that I wish this camera had is a watercolor special effect. The Sony RX100 has it and it creates some spectacular artistic images.

Bottom line, the D5200 is awesome!

This would be a great family camera and backup camera expect for one problem, when making videos the auto focus annoyingly hunts even in shots with little or no motion. The auto focus is also slow to respond to scene changes. The resultant videos continually go in and out of focus. The Nikon D5200 was purchased as a backup body for a D300 and as a primary video camera. It replaced a D5000 which has the same sensor as the D300 and can do 720P video. Since it is designed as a menu-based amateur camera unlike the D300, the D5200 like the D5000 has its limitations when replacing the D300. But, if the D300 quits in the Egyptian desert, the D5200 serves and takes nice still pictures. Like the new D7100, the D5200 has the latest 24 megapixel, higher ISO sensor. At the moment the D5200 is the lowest cost Nikon camera with this sensor. It takes good still pictures and the menu system is minimal making it easy to configure and use but limits camera flexibility. One interesting drawback, there appears to be no way to change how long the display stays on. The D5200 does have the ability to compensate for lens distortion which is a handy feature when using super zoom lenses like the 18-200mm and 18-300mm. Fully automatic point and shoot video is problematic because of the poor autofocus capability of the D5200 in video mode (it works fine taking still pictures). Besides periodic hunting for the right focus point and slow focusing, the D5200 has a hard time maintaining focus when zooming out to telephoto or panning a complex scene. You can get very good video results using manual focus but that limits the kinds of scenes that can be shot in video. Using auto focus in aperture preferred mode (A) also works if the aperture is set to F8 or higher increasing the depth of field. This will reduce or eliminate auto focus hunting but the camera has a slower response to change in light levels with a fixed aperture in video mode making panning problematic. Fortunately, the D5200's high ISO range permits setting small apertures even in relatively low light. Except for auto focus the D5200 video features are impressive. It offers a full video range from standard through full high definition with frame rates up to 60 and it has a built-in stereo microphone, something only found on the D7100. When it stays in focus, the D5200 takes excellent videos with good dynamic range and white balance and nice sound. The videos look as good as the still pictures. The D5200 was a video disappointment but I am keeping it.

Comments about Nikon D5200 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I bought this camera as an upgrade from the Nikon 1 J1 and it pleases me so much. I only have one lens for this camera and I've only had it for two days but in those two days I've shot about 500 pictures on this thing. I love it. The lens I chose for this camera is the 35 mm 1.8/G because I needed something I could really use for varying situations and it makes a good combination with the 24 megapixels of the D5200 if I need to crop. Some pros of the camera are: HDR capability, high ISO range, some very good and usable special effects for in-camera editing, timelapse capability. Some cons: I don't know, maybe the slow shutter? There's little bit of lag, not too much though. It's a great camera that will provide room to grow for several years.

Upgraded from a D40. Although the D40 is a nice light weight camera it only has 6 million pixels which is difficult when one does a lot of cropping. The 24.7 milliom pixels is great, although photos will take up a lot more space on my PC.

Comments about Nikon D5200 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I recently upgraded from a Nikon D40X that I've used for a little over seven years now, I lost a couple of pictures on the transfer to my computer and the battery suddenly died without much advance warning. I wanted something similar to what I have been using and didn't want to have to purchase new lens, speedlights, etc. The only thing really different were the batteries, but they came with the camera anyway along with a charger. Nikon suppies a very comprehensive instruction book and DVD along with new software for downloading photos and videos, and with some practice I feel very comfortable with it now. What I really like is the folding rotating viewscreen along with the ability to lock the mirror in the up position, along with more ISO speeds really opens up more options for shooting. Video wasn't something I would have specified on a DSLR, but I have used it, and it's nice to catch kids doing something in the middle of your photo shoot. Videos will, however, download a little bit differently on the computer than the photos. I'm very pleased with this new D5200 and I am looking forward to many enjoyable years of use with it.

I bought a couple of these for my studio interns because they were compatible with the stop-motion software we use. They are actually very good cameras for the price. We first purchased some Sony NEX-6 cameras, but they were less intuitive menus and did not work with the software.

Tried some low-light work with them and they are pretty good up to ISO 1600. Wouldn't go past that, personally. They are well made and do the job I need them to do.

My only complaint is that there is only one dial (shutter speed) and no dial for aperture. This is super annoying! I have to hold a second button and then use the dial...why not just make a second dial? Seems very counter-intuitive, especially for anyone buying this camera to learn with.

I was impressed with the lower noise at iso compared to my D5000. Also liked the added buttons to change settings faster. I felt like I needed an upgrade from my D5000 and I was not disappointed.

Comments about Nikon D5200 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

After looking at the mirrorless systems in pursuit of a compact and flexible travel camera that can deliver gallery prints it seems the best performers (noise, sensitivity and resolution, eye level viewfinder) are as big and as heavy as a small DSLR. And I already have a great set of Nikon mount prime and zoom lenses to cover the range from 8mm FE to 300mm tele. And, although the D5300 has a bit better noise processing and no OLPF, the 24MP is plenty of resolution for super sharp poster size prints. And the 5200 noise at base iso is low while not quite as low as the D800. Very similar properties to the Sony A77 at the same iso sensitivity. So, pluses are good image quality, lightweight, compact size, good performance. The quiet shutter release helps with low shutter speed situations. Minuses are smaller and relatively dim viewfinder image, limited AF compatibility (for a guy with lots of old Nikon glass). Also, the magnified image in live view is not sharp so it makes it hard to achieve precise focus. In use with AF-S and AF-I lenses, the autofocus error increases below 24mm focal lengths. Not up to the D7000 or D800 which autofocus nicely down to about 16mm.The D5200 does eat up the battery pretty quickly, not surprising given the low capacity of 1AH.On balance, it meets my expectations, mainly because I'm willing to deal with the focus problems to get the image quality, size and weight benefits.

Comments about Nikon D5200 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

Very nice, small DSLR. Lots of features crammed into a compact body. I chose this model because I needed a small camera to fit in a small tank bag on my motorcycle. Fantastic image quality in both raw and JPEG modes. Video quality is top notch as well. I would recommend this camera to most, but there are a few drawbacks to it that a buyer might want to be aware of before making a decision. 1) The lack of a second control wheel (which would be the Aperture wheel in Manual mode) makes it a little come cumbersome to use. You have to hold down the Exposure Compensation button while you spin the rear dial to adjust the Aperture... I sometimes hit the wrong button when trying to do this by feel. Then I end up changing my Shutter speed by mistake. 2) The lack of a White Balance button makes changing the white balance more complicated as well. 3) The fact that there is not an ISO button is not an issue, because you can use the function button for that. As a matter of fact, I think my camera arrived with ISO as the default setting for that button. 4) The buffer capacity is not what Nikon claims it is. The manual shows a buffer capacity of 35 shots in Large JPEG fine. I have not been able to get more than 11. This is probably not a big deal for most people in most shooting situations, but I have filled it up and had the camera slow down on me in 2 different situations.... shooting large groups on motorcycles riding past and photographing eagles grabbing fish. I have been working with Nikon on this for about a year now, but they haven't been able to explain it. They assured me that if I bought a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb/sec card that it would solve the problem. So I dropped $[$]on one of those and nothing changed. Every few months, I get an email from them saying my problem is still being researched in Japan and they will get back to me. 5) The paper manual that comes with the camera doesn't have much in it apart from the basics of how to attach a lens, turn on the camera and use menus and basic features. I remember my older Nikons came with thick manuals that went deeper into the advanced functions. It was nice to have that in my bag when I was in the field. 6) Buyers should keep in mind that there is not an internal focus motor in this model. When buying lenses you need to make sure you are getting AF-S lenses if you want to use auto focus. Most of the features I mentioned above are features that you get with more expensive models. This is a small, affordable, entry level DSLR, so you can't expect it to have every bell & whistle. I just wanted to mention the camera's limitations that I have run into. For the price I think it is a great camera... especially if the compact size is important to you.

Comments about Nikon D5200 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

Why do some call the D-5200 a "starter camera"? It takes superb pictures and functions with nearly the same sophistication as an "advanced" camera. I use it primarily in the video mode as a second camera for documentaries, since it records NTSC and PAL, is relatively light and costs far less than most dual format cam-corders. Major drawback: 20 minute max on shooting duration. Not to be used for extended takes.

I used it to take photos at he basketball game the other night and didn't even use the flash and I still got some great photos.Still working on figuring out all of the settings for action.
I have only had it for about 1 week but am really enjoying the smaller size and great quality photos it takes.
