The red Tough TG-2 iHS Digital Camera from Olympus is their flagship "tough" point-and-shoot digital camera with a 12MP sensor, a fast f/2.0 zoom lens and waterproof, shockproof, crush-proof and freeze-proof capabilities. The 12MP Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor combined with the powerful TruePic VI Image Processor provide detailed, true-color images and fast performance speeds. Full HD 1080p video capture with a dedicated one-touch button and HDMI output is supported by the TG-2 iHS and high-speed 720p HD recording is possible at 120 frames per second with slow-motion playback. You can also simultaneously shoot photos while you record video.

The TG-2 iHS is built tough to withstand the elements and the drops that might otherwise damage a compact camera. It can shoot underwater to a depth of 50' (15 m) and with two protective frames it is shock-proof to a drop of 6.9' (2.1 m) and crush-proof up to 220 lbf (100 kgf). It's able to shoot and maintain all functions in temperatures as low as 14°F (-10°C) and a protective seal keeps it sand- and dust-proof. Both the lens and the OLED screen have coatings to prevent scratching and to keep rain and condensation from obscuring your view. A double-lock battery door prevents accidental openings, vital when underwater. The TG-2 is particularly apt for shooting while diving as it has four shooting modes designed to automatically capture underwater light and color balance.

The lens on the TG-2 iHS is a 4x optical zoom that provides the focal length equivalency of 25-100mm (wide angle to telephoto) in the 35mm format. The maximum aperture at the wide-angle end is f/2.0 which makes it ideal for capturing clear images in low light. A Digital Zoom function is also available to double the telephoto reach if necessary and a macro mode is supported for extreme close-ups. Dual Image Stabilization offers sharper images by reducing the blurring effects of camera shake. And fast burst shooting is supported at 5fps (frames per second) in full resolution and up to 60fps in lower resolutions.

A 3.0" OLED screen with a water-repellent coating provides composition and playback and numerous assistive features make it easy to get the best shot possible. Enhanced Intelligent Auto will make all camera adjustments to capture your images with the optimal settings and Scene Modes allow you to match the camera's settings to the scene you are shooting, whether it be Sports, Snow, or Night Portrait. One-touch Panorama is supported and Face Detection recognizes when you are shooting people in order to optimize exposure on their faces for sharp, well-lit portraits. Creative Art Filters, such as Watercolor, Fisheye and Miniature are available to add special effects to your images and Beauty Mode lets you smooth out wrinkles, whiten teeth and add make-up touches.

The TG-2 iHS also features GPS, e.compass and manometer functions to log the route taken while shooting and to provide location, landmark, elevation and depth information which can be recorded along with the compatible image.

12MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS Sensor
The 12MP sensor in the TG-2 iHS provides high quality, detailed images with fine low-light performance and fast autofocus capability.
TruePic VI Image Processor
The image processing engine on the TG-2 iHS offers fast transfer and performance speeds and allows the camera to shoot both high resolution photos and Full HD video with accurate colors and minimal noise.
4x Optical Zoom Lens with Fast f/2.0 Maximum Aperture
With a focal range that runs from 25-100mm in the 35mm format, the lens on the TG-2 iHS provides shooting lengths from wide-angle to telephoto. The wide-angle allows for expansive vistas and the telephoto lengths can bring distant subjects closer. At the wide-angle end, the maximum aperture is f/2.0 which allows in sufficient light to shoot at fast shutter speeds and is therefore very effective in low-light situations and can create shallow depth of field images. Because this camera is meant to be used in all weather conditions, the lens is provided with a water-repellent coating to keep rain drops and condensation from clouding-up the image.
8x Digital Zoom
A Digital Zoom function allows you to double your zoom range to 8x for further telephoto reach if needed.
1080p Full HD Video with Dedicated Button
A one-touch button allows you to record videos with amazing clarity in Full HD 1080p video and the TG-2 iHS offers Multi-Motion Movie IS, which is a newly developed image stabilization technique that helps to reduce the blur created by camera movement when shooting video. Micro HDMI (Type D) output makes playing back videos on your HDTV simple and at 720p HD resolution you can shoot videos at 120 frames per second for slow motion capture.
Multi-Recording
Simultaneously record videos and still images so you'll never have to compromise one for the other. Simply start recording your video and press the shutter button to snap stills throughout the recording.
3.0" OLED Screen
A 3.0" OLED with 610k-dot resolution features anti-glare technology for easier composing and shooting in direct sunlight. It also has several protective coatings to prevent scratching and to keep rain and condensation off your display.
Waterproof, Freeze-proof and Extremely Durable
The TG-2 iHS is extremely durable and designed to be used in inclement weather, to shoot underwater and to withstand the bumps and crashes that other cameras cannot. It is waterproof to 50' (15 m), shock-proof to 6.9' (2.1 m), crush-proof to 220 lbf (100 kgf), freeze-proof to 14°F (-10°C) and dust-proof.
Underwater Shooting Modes
The TG-2 iHS boasts 4 different underwater scene modes -- Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2 and Underwater Macro -- each carefully calibrated to allow for optimal underwater color balance, exposure and flash.
Double-Lock Durability
A multi-directional, double-lock mechanism keeps the camera's battery door from opening and protects your camera from accidental openings underwater.
ISO Range 100-6400
An ISO range up to 6400 offers accurate color reproduction and low-noise imaging even in low light situations. Auto and Expandable High ISO are also provided.
Dual Image Stabilization
Dual Image Stabilization combines Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds to capture crisp, clear images even in low-light situations.
High Speed Continuous Shooting
Shoot 5fps (frames per second) up to 25 images at full resolution 100 images at up to 60fps in lower resolution.
Autofocus Tracking
AF Tracking automatically tracks fast-moving subjects such as kids, pets and sporting events, and continuously adjusts the focus and brightness so you can capture these moments with ease.
AF Illuminator
An LED Illuminator on the front of the camera acts to enhance focus and exposure for macro shooting. It also works in conjunction with the flash, especially underwater, to help illuminate your subject in low-light conditions.
Shooting Modes
Shooting Modes include Intelligent Auto, Program Auto, Microscopic Macro Mode, Custom Mode 1, Custom Mode 2, Beauty Mode with Make-up, Panorama and Backlight HDR.
Intelligent Auto and Scene Modes
In iAuto mode, the camera automatically detects the subject, lighting and situation to identify the scene you're shooting and adjusts the settings for ideal results. Scene Modes include Portrait, Beauty, Landscape, Night, Night + Portrait, Hand-Held Starlight, Sport, Indoor, Self Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Beach & Snow, Documents, Pet(Cat) and Pet(Dog), Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2, Underwater Macro, and S macro.
Aperture Priority Mode
For added flexibility and creative control, Aperture Priority Mode allows you to manually adjust the aperture for optimal results. Simply set the mode dial to "A", to make adjustments.
Microscopic Macro Mode
Capture up-close detail of your subjects by employing Microscopic Macro Zoom, which combines the optical zoom and super resolution zoom to equal from 7 to 14x magnification (35mm conversion) from a distance of 0.4" (1 cm).
Hand-Held Starlight Mode
At night and in low-light situations where image blur is more likely to occur, Hand-Held Starlight mode captures multiple images and stitches them together into a single, crisp photo.
Face Detection
Face Detection automatically recognizes your subjects' faces and optimizes exposure for sharp, well-balanced portraits and group shots.
Shadow Adjustment Technology (HDR)
HDR Mode compensates for shadowed areas to minimize the differences in highlight and shadowed areas resulting in more uniform exposure across the image. When used together with iAuto or Face Detection, the subject's face is shot with optimal exposure settings so that the face can be seen clearly even under strong back light conditions.
Panorama Mode
Capture panoramic vistas all in one frame with the touch of one button, by simply panning the camera across the scene.
Magic Filter - Photo and Video
Magic Art Filters add creative touches to photos and some are applicable to videos as well. Choose from Pop Art, Pin Hole, Fisheye, Soft Focus, Punk, Sparkle, Watercolor, Miniature, Reflection, Dramatic and Fragmented.
Shooting Assist Functions

GPS, E.Compass and Manometer
With the GPS and e.compass functions, location and landmark information will be displayed and recorded along with the image. The TG-2 iHS is also equipped with a logging function so you can track the route taken from your recorded images by using applications such as Google Earth. The manometer records elevation and water depth and displays a warning when the camera approaches a depth of 50' (15 m).
System Expandability
The TG-2 iHS is compatible with various accessories and converter lenses including a Fisheye Converter Lens and Tele Converter Lens and via the converter adapter ring, you can fit any 40.5mm filter onto the lens. 03/06/13 - I got the Olympus TG-2 and FCON-T01 Fisheye (and the required CLA-T01 adapter) about 2 weeks ago and I'm having a whole bunch of fun with it and really impressed. I probably should rate 5 stars instead of 4, but to me, the top score should be reserved for total perfection. I'm an amateur photographer, so I won't be getting technical in my review, but I have above average expectations for image quality. I'm also realistic about the trade-off's between price and performance. For the price, I'm getting a LOT of performance from the TG-2.This camera takes great pictures and video, plain and simple and really makes a difference in low light conditions due to the F2.0 lens. I've been running around with the TG-2 in my pants pocket and it's only slightly more bulky than a wallet. It never turned on accidentally. It takes about 2 seconds to fire up, then just point and shoot. Take a few shots quick and easy. Take some video (with stereo sound, by the way). Back in pocket. Rain, no problem. Dust, no problem. Low light, no problem. If you are into cameras very much, you know there is no single camera that does everything. On one end, I have a Panasonic GH2 DSLR and the other end a GoPro Hero 2. For me, the Olympus TG-2 is a perfect fit right in the middle and could trump my other 2 cameras in a lot of situations - you get F2.0 lens, good functions, 3" OLED display, HD video, 12Mp stills, compact size, and waterproof. What a great combo. My gut feeling is I will use the TG-2 more than the others for every day shooting and family vacations (especially with the FCON-T01 Fisheye Converter Lens) due to all the features, functions and rugged waterproofness (is that a word?).First impressions, the TG-2 is a bit heavier than I expected for it's compact size, which is a good thing. There has to be some "meat" to make it rugged. However, the grip in the right hand (fingers on the front grip and thumb on the rear pad) requires some grip pressure, which you get used to quickly. The included wrist strap was too bulky for my liking, so I swapped it with a thinner strap from my old Olympus Camedia. I also bought the Floating Wrist Strap, which has a quick disconnect so the clip can always be attached to the camera if not using the float. I did not test the float yet to see if it actually has enough buoyancy. Finally, I got the recommended Pearstone Onyx 240 Camera Pouch. This pouch is perfect if you want the smallest pouch possible for the base camera, a spare SD card and a spare battery, but don't expect to fit anything else, especially the Fisheye lens, or the charger or the USB cable.Menus - I thought the menu and button system were very intuitive. Some say the buttons are a little small, but I say, what do you expect on a camera this size. I have big fingers and had no problem. I only read the manual to install the battery and SD card and proper closure of the waterproof doors. After that, I found my way around the menus with no problem. You will benefit from reading the manual to dig deeper into some features like the GPS, but I found it easy to just poke around. The CLA-T01 adapter ring - you must have this ring to attach the Fisheye converter or the Tele lens (I did not get the Tele). I think this adapter ring should come standard with the camera because it comes with a removable lens cap. To me, the interchangeable red / black bezel is just bling and the base camera has zero protection for the lens. Well, actually the lens appears to be behind a flat glass plate. Either way, there is no protection. For a rugged, toss it anywhere camera, I think there should be protection on the exposed optical element. So, I'm leaving the adapter ring in place to use the lens cap.Since I mentioned the adapter ring already, I will start with the Fisheye converter. The big benefit is the huge 130 degree view and the minor con is it's slightly bigger than I expected. But WOW, you capture everything in the wide view. This is great for impromptu filming of friends and groups or scenes in general where you can't plan the shot and you want to capture it all. Just roughly aim the camera and shoot. You won't miss.I don't intend to use this as an "underwater" camera, but certainly in rain or splashing waves, or playing around near the surface of the water. One thing I'm curious about with the Fisheye, there is a gap between the Fisheye and the front lens of the camera (a hollow space created by the adapter ring). Water can get into this space, which is part of the design. But it seems like water will only seep into or out of this space gradually. It's certainly OK with air in that gap, and probably fine when fully filled with water, but what happens to a photo when the gap is only partially full of water? We shall see.Camera modes - For all around shooting, I get great results with iAuto mode and I really appreciate the A mode to set Aperture priority for more control. But like others mention, it would be fantastic to have full manual mode. I'm not bothered by lack of camera RAW only because I have not gone down that road yet. One thing you might want to study in the manual is what functions can be changed in what Mode. Either way, it's obvious in the menus. For example, iAuto does not allow manual flash - only the camera decides if and when to fire the flash. I tried some photos at night on my back porch with only the light from the windows. There was clearly a need for flash, but it did not fire and I could not make it fire. Other cameras have this same issue with full auto so I guess that's on purpose. To my thinking, iAuto should be dumb and dumber mode - if in doubt, fire the flash. Afterall, iAuto gives you the choice to turn the flash off if you don't want it. To force the flash, you must use P or A mode, (Scene modes vary as to which flash mode is available).Magic mode - this is basically special effects. To me, this is gimmick stuff. If you are serious about these effects, you will do it in a photo editor. But I must say, I had a lot of fun with Reflection and Fragmented for quick and easy in-camera fun.Super Macro mode plus tele zoom - holy guacamole. I had THE most fun with this mode. I never had a camera that could zoom in this close. The camera has a small LED that can be turned on for these super tight shots (again, super intuitive from the button / menu). I found it best to remove the bezel ring or adapter ring because they blocked some of the LED light since you are soooo close to the subject (flash is no use - it's like way out in left field, so the LED is essential). We took photos of our eyeballs, and fingertips and the surface of a raisin, and tree bark and plants and insects and all kinds of stuff. It really is like have a microscope.F2.0 lens - for those who know how to utilize a fast F2.0 lens, it gives just what you expect. Great low light performance and fantastic shallow depth of field. For low light, of course you are still limited by the quality of the sensor in a camera of this price point, but the results were impressive for using available light to capture natural colors. For point and shoot, iAuto works great. I got fantastic hand held shots at night in my living room and kitchen with just a few overhead incandescent lights and no flash. The colors looked natural.Battery life - So far it seems good as advertised, but I need to get a few more miles on the camera to say for sure. I bought an external charger and 2 spare batteries, which is typical good practice for any camera.Overall, I think the TG-2 is a winner and I'm just scratching the surface of the potential for this camera. I'm going on a kiteboard trip to Dominican Republic and I plan to use the TG-2 as my primary camera for all photo and video aspects of the trip.

After reading so many glowing reviews, I was incredibly excited to receive the TG-2. Unfortunately, that excitement gradually fizzled the more I used it. The convenience of a tough, durable camera is great, but I am honestly not convinced that the photo quality is better than what I capture with my iPhone 4S (maybe I'm not using it properly?).

The camera starts quick enough, focuses and shoots quickly, but the photos seem over saturated and anything further than 30 feet away seems to have an almost cartoon-like quality to it. Bold, dark lines separating a mountain's ridge line from the sky in the background, for example. I apologize that I'm not savvy enough to articulate this in technical terms.

Macro-mode is unbelievably great, but landscape photos (the main reason I purchased the item) aren't any more impressive than what I can do with my camera phone and with that, the value seems to evaporate for me.

Additionally, there is a terrible clicking noise when shooting video. From what I understand, this was an existing problem with the TG-1 and only somewhat addressed in the TG-2. It is hard to believe that this was allowed into production, it seems like a glitch you'd see with a product in beta.

I wish I loved this camera more than I do. On paper, it has everything I need in a camera. It is not a DSLR replacement (as I've read in other reviews) and if you're OK with 'good enough' shots I suppose it would suffice. After reading so many reviews, I was expecting a little more.

Much more of a camera than expected

    By Judyjanome

Comments about Tough TG-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

I had decided to purchase an underwater type camera three days before I left on my Bahama Cruise. This little black camera with red trim met and exceeded all of my expectations. Having only a day or two to learn all of its functions and play a bit I was not only able to capture all of the photos both underwater and point-and-shoot but allow my grandson 14 to use the camera is well. All of the different scene modes were a total surprise to me. When I returned home and viewed all of my photos on my television I was in more than pleased with the results. I have since found out that there are two lenses that I can purchase as well as an additional case for underwater use which extends the depth in which you can use the camera. The optional lenses are a fish eye lens and a telephoto lens. Olympus definitely delivered as well as the BH photo store on this little black beauty.

Bought this camera for our contstruction crew to keep onsite. They needed something that they didn't have to worry about getting dust into, dropped, or wet and this one fit the bill. It's also a nice, compact size and has great recovery time so you're not waiting forever to snap the next photo. We haven't fully put it to the test yet to comment on battery life or picture quality but so far, so good.

So far so good. I'm weary of taking my SLR on vacation, since we go to the beach so much. Not only do I worry about sand and water on my SLR, I worry about theft...I hate leaving it on a towel while in the ocean. I did research and discovered that this is the best underwater and beach point and shoot. So far so good. Easy to use, has an Aperture priority setting, which is nice, and can go anywhere. Haven't tried underwater yet. Glad to say it doesn't match my SLR (I'd be annoyed if a $ point and shoot can match a $ SLR with $ lens), but I am very satisfied with the pics. And there's no shutter delay like most point and shoots, which is HUGE.Lots of presets that I'd consider tinsel that I'll never use. But Definitely a strong recommend.

          Fast and easy to use

          By Aaron

Comments about Tough TG-2 iHS Digital Camera (Black):

I chose this camera a few weeks ago after researching all of the competition and trying out the Nikon. I'm overall very happy with it. Pros: very fast startup and shutter reaction, easy to use video button, some manual controls that let you play a little bit, good white balance accuracy, a user-friendly interface, and the fast lens, of course. Photo quality seems very good, but I admit I haven't yet downloaded any to a computer to look at them closely. The flash fires quickly, and the GPS and manometer seem good, even though I will not use them. Cons: I have big hands, and this camera just doesn't fit very comfortably in my grip, I fumble with it when trying to use one hand, the zoom is only 4x, and the zoom in video mode is jumpy, slow, and can be heard in the video, it was the most expensive of all the competition, it is a little bit buggy, and has frozen on me twice and does strange things when charging, no wifi. I haven't taken it underwater yet, but I plan to very soon. The compartment doors are solid, but I'm a little bit worried that the closure mechanism doesn't seem to be very robust, and might leak, as some users have complained. I assume that it won't leak, but the closure mechanism on the Nikon, for example, seemed much more solid, like you're closing a vaultOverall, I'm very happy with it, but I'll update this review if there are any problems in the water.

I use this camera mostly when fly fishing.

It takes very nice images, and the f2.0 lens is a real advantage over its competitors. The macro function allows for excellent images of aquatic insects.

Took this camera on vacation to Mexico in January. On the way, I read a Popular Photography mag from this summer about underwater photography. Pics there were from DSLR's in casings. I never thought the underwater pictures that I would take from this camera would be as sharp (untouched) as the ones I saw in the magazine. I was very pleased.
The camera is still "new". I will hope that the quality lasts. It does have lots of other extras/gadgets that make a point and shoot fun to take along.

My wife and I got ourselves this camera for Christmas. So far, it's been great. We are still trying to figure out how to use all the features, but for basic point and click photography, this is much better than our previous (7 year old) Olympus Tough camera. I like the way that it can snap pictures fast. I'm having difficulties getting low light pictures to come out well.

like the camera, the lens is awesome at 2.0 for shooting in low light, had the orignal tg and it had a 6.3 constant blurry shots...the body is a little small for large hands and found myself funbling with it several times. good start up time and fast shutter trip time.did notice a bit of noise in the shadows.i am a pro shooter and use this as my fun camera and mistreat it...it keeps performing..takes a beating and keeps on shooting so for that its prefect

An awesome camera as it lives up to it's expectations. The scene mode offers a lot useful settings. I like the compactness of the this camera as well as it's attributes as being tough. Shock proof, water proof, freeze proof.

I also like that the photographer can adjust the volume of the camera. And the 25-100mm zoom is silent.

A great camera for a point-and-shoot. I don't think you can go wrong with this one.

Great camera and was thrilled when I finally got for my birthday. I was saddened when camera broke at my first day at the beach on a 10 day snorkle vacation. Use was normal, not used in deep water nor was it knocked around. I did use it underwater 3 times, on third time settings could not be adjusted nor could I review photos. I let it dry out, screen showed many errors, then sometimes no errors, then sometimes errors. I am not sure if I got a got a bad model or not, but did follow manual instructions.

Bought it for use at the pool and beach. Have lumix LX3 and my wife has canon s100. Had a better movie mode than the LX3 and had fast start up and a better zoom. One weakness was no RAW. Worked well underwater and the macro mode is very impressive. The fast F2.0 is nice for use in low light and you don't need the flash for a lot of situations.
Did wish it had raw and manual controls, though the aperture priority worked well for most situations.

This is my first Olympus. I chose this camera for underwater and tough use, but the camera is excellent for everday use as well. Noise is quite good at high ASA settings. The f2 lens helps a lot under low light conditions. No shortcomings observed. This is an excellent camera for travel; rain, wind, cold, drops, water, dust, you name it, are no problem, you can just concentrate on the photo.

We bought this just before going to French Polynesia and were very glad we did. It seemed to be rated highly by many other reviewers, so I went with it. The f/2.0 lens was a big help - the camera does a good job of not using the flash on auto mode (it is nice to see some faster lenses on point&shoots). The build quality is excellent. Only complaint is the non-standard cable used for charging - just one more thing I have to add to my carryon! I have several high end Canon DSLRs & L-series lenses and was not disappointed with the pictures from this Olympus!
