The Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder features three back-illuminated MOS sensors (3MOS) with an effective size of approximately 1/4" each and records Full HD 1080/60p video in the AVCHD format. The 12x Leica Dicomar zoom lens has a fast max aperture of f/1.5 and a 35mm equivalent of approximately 29.8-399.2mm, and the optical zoom is supplemented by an 25x Intelligent Zoom. Built-in Wi-Fi enables real time streaming and remote control via a smartphone or tablet. Other features include a 3.5" LCD touchscreen monitor, Five Axis Hybrid OIS, 5.1-channel surround sound, and iA Plus Mode.

Three 1/2.3" MOS Sensors with BSI
The imaging system features three MOS sensors with back-side illumination (BSI) and a total size of 1/2.3" each. Of this total size, the camera uses approximately a 1/4" portion of the entire sensor to accommodate Panasonic's existing prism system. This means the effective sensor size for the camera is approximately 1/4". This effective size yields a 35mm equivalent focal length of 29.8 to 399.2mm.
Leica Dicomar Lens
The fast, f/1.5 lens features a Nano Surface Coating that suppresses ghosting and flare when shooting moving pictures, and let you record bright images with very little noise even in dark places. The lens has a 12x optical zoom ratio, which is further extended by a 25x Intelligent Zoom.
Crystal Engine Pro II
The ultra-high speed Crystal Engine Pro II can process a huge number of pixels – approximately equivalent to four times the pixel count of Full-HD – which enables pixel shift technology for superb Full-HD image quality.
Live Channel Video Streaming
The built-in Wi-Fi function enables real time broadcasting of important events via Ustream. This lets you deliver live images to people with Internet access around the world. There is also a function to send e-mail to notify the start of broadcasting to preregistered e-mail addresses.
Remote Shooting and Home Monitoring
The dedicated Panasonic Image App allows users to remotely zoom In/Out, activate record Start/Stop, check audio recording and view the live image on a smartphone or tablet. The HC-X920 can be used as a home monitor, allowing you can monitor and record live video using your smartphone or tablet, even when you are away from home.
3.5" Touchscreen LCD Monitor
The 3.5" LCD features 1,152,000 dot resolution and intuitive fingertip touch-operation. When shooting, you can activate the shutter simply by touching a fingertip on the screen. For playback, you can also change thumbnail pages by sliding a fingertip across the screen.
Electronic View Finder
This extendable, 263,424 dot equivalent viewfinder is easy to use and convenient for focusing and other adjustments. The EVF makes it easy to see the scene under bright sunlight.
5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S. +
5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S. + thoroughly suppresses blurring over the entire shooting range. This makes it possible to capture crisp, clear images with reduced blur in almost every shooting situation.
iA and Scene Modes
iA (Intelligent Auto) senses the shooting conditions and automatically adjusts settings for optimal results. iA makes the bothersome settings for you and makes it easy to capture beautiful, well-focused images. Scene modes include Sports, Portrait, Low Light (motion image only), Spot Light, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Fireworks, Scenery, Night Scenery, Night Portrait (still image only), and Soft Skin Mode.
Creative Control
Four filter effects - Miniature Effect, 8mm Movie, Silent Movie and Time Lapse Recording - further enhance expressive capabilities. The filter results can be checked on the LCD while shooting. This makes it possible to shoot impressive video recordings that are matched to the shooting situation.
5.1-Channel Surround Sound
The HC-X920 is equipped with multiple electret condenser microphones for a realistic sound space to match true-to-life HD images. Other audio features include Wide mode, 12x Zoom Mic mode, Focus Mic mode and a Wind Noise Canceller.
Manual Control Ring and Focus Assist
The manual ring gives you easy, fingertip control over the iris, focus, zoom and exposure settings. You'll find using the ring is a much more intuitive, comfortable, user-friendly process than accessing a menu screen. In addition, Focus Assist supports manual adjustments by displaying blue outlines around subjects that are in-focus. You can easily check the focus on the LCD monitor when focusing manually, to ensure sharp images.
Optional 3D Conversion Lens
By mounting the VW-CLT2 3D Conversion Lens (sold separately) you can record FULL HD 3D images with the Multiview Video Coding recording system of the AVCHD 3D format. Right-eye and left-eye images are both recorded and played in Full-HD quality, using the Frame Sequential Method to produce FULL HD 3D images.
2D to 3D Conversion
2D images can be easily transformed into 3D images with the 2D to 3D Conversion function. Simply connect the camcorder to a 3D-compatible TV with an HDMI cable. The 2D to 3D Conversion function then uses the image processing capability of the engine to convert 2D images into 3D.
Level Gauge and Level Shot Function
The built-in Level Gauge helps users correct slight tilting that can be difficult to see with the naked eye. In addition, the Level Shot Function automatically detects and corrects the tilting of captured images. It corrects tilt even if when shooting in an unstable or awkward position such as low-angle or high-angle shooting.
20.4MP Still Photographs
Still Picture Recording mode lets you shoot with a maximum resolution of 20.4 megapixels.
Highlight Playback and Easy Share
You can enjoy Highlight Playback with a smartphone or tablet right after shooting. Favorite scenes can be shared on SNS with simple drag and drop operation.
Wireless TV Playback
An Access Point at home can be used to transfer data wirelessly to a compatible TV or a tablet in the living room, kitchen or other rooms in the home.
Pre-Rec Function
This smart function records three seconds of video even before you actually begin shooting. Before recording begins, the images are held in temporary, internal memory. This helps ensure that you won't miss the start of a moment you want to record, such as when an event begins all of a sudden.
Color Night Rec
Color Night Rec captures images with color even in dim lighting (1 lux).
A Variety of Interfaces
A mini jack on the side of the camcorder enables the use of an external microphone (sold separately), and the accessory shoe provides an interface for optional accessories. There is also a headphone jack, which allows you to monitor audio recordings or playback recorded footage with greater privacy.
Plug and Copy to External HDD
Recorded data can be easily copied to an HDD without having to use a PC.
Auto Ground-Directional Standby
The O.I.S. linear motor system can detect when the camera is in an unusual shooting position and automatically stops recording, saving both battery power and media storage space. This can be helpful if the user inadvertently engages the recording mode. Of course, this can feature can also be deactivated when necessary.
HD Writer
HD Writer software, included with the camcorder, makes it easy to play or edit videos on your PC and have more fun when the shooting's done. The Short Movie Story function makes it possible to transform still images and videos into dramatic short videos. Once the still images/videos, a theme, and background music are selected, the software takes over to automatically produce the movie. It's easy to add titles, rearrange scenes, provide transition effects, and edit images in single frame units.

I use this and its predecessor for live music recital recordings. As such, I basically start multiple cameras and record for the duration, generally only operating the main camera angle. I got this to replace an older Canon HV20, which, while it had excellent image quality for the time, became a nuisance because of the tape capture and the time required change tapes during the performances.

The image quality under normal lighting is spectacular with this latest camera. The low light performance seems adequate, also, although I haven't pushed it in that area. I capture at the HA setting, and with a 32GB SDHC card, I get over 4 hours on a chip. I am headed for DVD output, so the extra quality of the 1080P setting doesn't help a lot, and the battery life is a bit better at the lower bit-rate. I got the larger battery, and can get almost 3 hrs of battery life with occasional zooms and the LCD display active. That is enough not to have to run AC power to the camera, which makes for faster setup at the venue.

The usual sound problems exist with this camera, although no tape drive helps a lot. The EQ seems to have excessive presence and no bass, but that is a limitation of space, I presume. The 5.1 is okay, but as expected, the sound is very compressed on auto. I tried one session with the mics set to manual, no agc, and while I had the level set correctly, and the output shows no digital clipping, apparently there is a problem with limited headroom in the preamps, as the the sound was still distorted, despite being 3-6 dB below the maximum digital level. I'll try again with the agc turned on to see if there is a setting that makes the sound useful, but I always record a separate set of audio tracks with decent mikes anyway. It would be nice to get decent sound onto the camera recording, although to be fair, the sound is somewhat improved over the previous generation.

The separate sound tracks and multiple cameras helps reveal another flaw, at least as I use this camera. As we all know by now, these AVCHD cameras write files limited to either 4GB or 2GB, depending on the brand. This camera writes 4GB files, which means three, or sometimes 4 files for the event. Unfortunately, the camera mutes the audio for the last couple of frames in the file and then drops at least one video frame between files. There really is little excuse for this at this point in the technology curve, so I conclude Panasonic just didn't care enough to make this work properly between files. If you use shorter clips, it shouldn't be a problem, because you expect to edit this stuff together. While I also edit everything, the missing video/audio can come at an inconvenient time.

The audio and dropped frames are the reason for a 4-star rating for what is otherwise an excellent camera. And I can live with the audio issues, as I'm sure I will figure out the right way to use the audio track that is recorded with the video. I can generally live with the dropped frames as well, but it does sometimes force the choice of camera angles and when I have to go to a different camera during the editing.

As always, editing AVCHD without an intermediate render is taxing for computer systems. I've found that Vegas Pro 12 mostly gives good sync between the audio and video with 3 AVCHD video streams and 3 stereo audio buses, but that is on a very powerful SB extreme with SSD disks and RAID volumes. The dropped frames mean I have to resync between each file break, but you'd have to do that with multiple clips at any rate.

One other complaint - although the battery is essentially the same size as the previous generation, the batteries are not compatible. So I had to get another full set. There is also no external charger in the kit, so you either have to get one or charge in the camera. At least this camera will take external power while the battery is plugged in, unlike the previous generation.

I wanted to get a second HDC-HS900, but they apparently stopped making it without first supplying a suitable replacement. I guess the HC-X920 is now the highest level pro-sumer camera that Panasonic makes. While it does have a couple of advances (higher resolution stills, wifi), I feel like this camera seems like it should be a pre-HS900 model, rather than post. It seems needlessly larger, bulkier, and it even feels like a cheaper plastic unit. On top of that, there's no accessory shoe on top. Instead, they give you an attachment to put on the right side of the unit if you want to attach an accessory. This is not only a nonsensical and clumsy design, but it blocks your right hand from being able to operate the manual focus ring. Very bad design, if you ask me. I'd rather have another HS900, which doesn't suffer from these inadequacies.Oh, one other thing. These Panasonic pro-sumer devices, despite their INCREDIBLE picture, lack in the audio department. While the 5.1 quality seems good, the recording level is painfully low, and lacks in low end. I have a $ JVC camera whose sound blows away that of the much higher priced panasonic.

Comments about Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder:

I bought two of these for weddings, instructional videos and church productions. They are part of a 4 camera set up... I tried out the "20MP" still photo feature- Very nice! Rich but not over saturated colors with nice detail in both highlights and shadows. Adobe Elements loves the big files! The video is marvelous(!) in church productions. I set to manual- then used the lens ring to open up the iris until zebra stripes appeared then shut down until stripes went away- highlights were great, mids rich and lots of detail in shadows with no noise. These did better then our church's "real" tv cameras for shadow detail. You have to be careful with the lens ring or your fingers end up in the shot. I gave the camera 4 stars because of the lens ring- its great for fine tuning focus- but you have to crank it way too far to be able to "rack focus"- (this really dissapointed me). It's great for managing iris- but if you crank it really fast nothing happens, so you have to go easy even if your lighting guy makes an abrupt change. The lens ring is good for slow zoom over short distances, but again, you have to crank it too far to do a slow push or pull in a production with the ring- you'll have to use the touch screen or rocker switch for those. I've not used it for white balance because, so far, the camera's auto white balance has been spot on! I used in camera mics and sound was really nice. Only negative so far is that they make it obvious how bad my other 2 cameras are in low light!!!

A very good bye. Finally a camcorderwith a viewfinder at a good price. The problem with trying to film a scene in bright sunlight a been solved. This camcorder has so many features I can not begin to talk about them. The photos are great, especialy when you are videoing and taking pictures at the same time. The price for what you get is great.

Comments about Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder:

      Cons:
The camcorder is listed with three 1/2.3" CMOS sensors. While it has more light sensitivity than my Panasonic TM-700 with three 1/4" CMOS sensors, it does not even come close to my Canon XHA1 with three 1/3" sensors. Three 1/2.3 sensors should be more sensor area than three 1/3" sensors, so this is misleading from Panasonic. I did wonder how they could pack in so much sensor into that small of a camera, so it is not a replacement for a pro camera. I notice now the B&H website now clarifies that they are still really effective for only 1/4" each, which wasn't there when I boght the camcorders. Also, it still has noticeable steps of light changing in MANUAL iris mode. I had hoped that Panasonic would fix this compared to my old PV-GS120 DV camera which was smooth in iris change. Also, they moved the SD card slot to the bottom versus the side on the TM-700, so you cannot swap while on a tripod.
Pros: easier access to readily used functions
Better light sensitivity and low video noise in low light.

I make videos primarily for you tube using green screen in my studio. However I took this camera out this weekend to the city. (San Francisco)It was great. It handled both low light and transitioned to a beautiful bright sunny day with no problem.

As other reviewers have said the auto white balance is off, but manually setting your white balance is the way to go anyway. I highly recommend this camera especially considering the only competition is well over $1000

I reviewed the specs of several camcorders - well, three anyway - and I came to realize specs weren't the ultimate measure of satisfaction. I looked at some comparison videos on YouTube, and I was impressed with the imagery I saw. Not any one camcorder is perfect in all respects, but this one had the best balance of performance and features, hands down. There are a few little quirky things that will take some practice, but a little fiddling with the unit will iron all that out. Great low light performance, no vertical burst artifacts, and great dynamic range. And as always, B&H is a great supplier.

          I like it.

Comments about Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder:

This camcorder has fantastic picture quality and I researched it for 5-6 weeks before I made my purchase. I must have looked at 25-30 YouTube videos and read every review there was. I also looked at the Canon G20 and G30 along with the Sony. The lag people mention with the automatic color balance has a simple remedy. Turn the camera on about 5 seconds before you start recording and no problem. It has a diopter adjustment on the viewfinder and also a color balance quick adjust on the LCD screen to warm up some scenes like walking through the woods or near water. The menus are very easy to use and respond quickly. There are several presets for snow, beach, night, etc and the ones I've used so far work great. I am very happy with this camera and for the price I don't think it any camcorder in existence could touch it. B&H, as usual, shipped it very fast and very well packed.

Comments about Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder:

Although I've only had my X920 for a few weeks, I'm very pleased with its performance! This camcorder is replacing a years old Cannon HF100 consumer camcorder. So far I shot a few youth basketball games in a well lit gym, and a couple of church services, and I was very satisfied. I adjusted a few settings for color/saturation, exposure. I used the onboard mic set at 5.1, and I was pleased with the results.
I shot a few outside scenes and again, pleased with the results. Although with the sun shining, it was near impossible to use the LCD. Thankfully, the X920 has a view finder! Image stabilization is very good! Also, very pleased with the lowlight performance just goofing around in my home. Much better than my old HF100. The zoom capability isn't as long as other camcorders, but I'm fine with the zoom capabilities of my X920 none the less.

I found the wireless function easy to setup and use for remote control use via my iPhone. I've no idea if I'll be using that functionality much, but its good to have if I need it.

I already have a Panasonic AC-90, which I will do a few two-camera tests along with the X920. I know that I'll have to do a few tweaks to matchup these two cameras.

Be sure to purchase more batteries along with an AC battery charger. The X920 does not come with an AC battery charger. Although you can charge the battery while it's docked on the X920 by AC power, and it comes with a car charger. But Panasonic, why not include an AC stand-alone battery charger???
I also purchased an OEM Panasonic VW-VBN260 2500mAh extended battery from B&H, and two knockoff extended batteries which came with an AC battery charger from an online vendor. The cheap batts work just fine so far, as does the AC battery charger, which can also charge the OEM batteries for the X920. Although I'm sure the cheapo batts will gradually lose their power of longevity use over time. By the way, the extended batteries, both the OEM and cheap batteries, take at least 4 hours to fully charge. Possibly longer.

All in all, very satisfied my X920, although the price was more than I wanted to spend. But I wanted good performance, especially in low light. And if you want good performance from a camcorder, most times you have to pay a higher price.

A few items I bought besides the extra batteries, were some more 64GB & 32GB SDHC/SDXC cards, a UV lens for the protection of the X920's lens, a lens hood (Mennon 16:9 Screw Mount Rectangular Wide Angle Lens), and a wide angle lens (Digital King DSW Pro 0.7x AF Wide Angle Conversion Lens). I'm looking at buying another external boom mic, possibly the Rode VideoMic Pro.

All in all, I'm very pleased with the purchase from B&H of my HC-X920!

Comments about Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder:

I recently acquired the x920. Image quality is fantastic in daylight. Indoor image quality is also good. I plan to use this camera to record swim meets. One of the few camcorders without a bayer filter which allows for a sharper image as it records 900 to 950 lines unlike the other one sensor cameras from Sony and Cannon which record much less due to sensor type. Colors are accurate also.

I'm in the safari business.. photographic safaris.. and I have 50 years of experience in television and wildlife photography. I needed this camera as a small and inconspicuous tool for shooting activities and the interiors at lodges I use in my itineraries. Game drives, too. I want HD video with maximum resolution and the early samples I have done around my home and neighborhood make it clear that the X920 is exactly what I should use. I will appear to be a regular guest at a lodge, just filming my trip. As long as I don't show too much of other guests who might rather NOT be part of my marketing, I can merrily go about my business and end up with some quality HD video to show prospective clients.

Comments about Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder:

Step up from Pan S60. Much nicer colors, good depth. Same issue as with S60 that white balance is at times quite slow, and first second or two may be false color.
Easy in use and touch screen is responsive and quick to navigate. Not too many options to play with.
Have not been able to master keeping the horizon straight. The S60 is always spot on, but the balance on the X920 is just different, and once off it seems that the OIS plays havoc with the horizon. Will need to use a mono pod with this camera.
The quality of the video is excellent and in low light the camera captures enough detail.
Light and small enough to fit in (larger) coat pocket, and battery life is quite good.
When using a protective filter the in-build flash can not be used as it will wash the picture. Otherwise pictures at highest setting come out crisp and clear.

I researched consumer camcorders to death and decided on the X920. Best choice I could've made. 1080p quality is spectacular! Closest to a prosumer/pro camera I could get at this pricepoint. I've read other reviews saying the color hues were cold but I haven't seen that. Colors are true, audio is excellent, love the larger 3.5" screen. Well built and plan to get years of use out of it! Takes a bit to learn the wifi setup but works great!
