The LaCie d2 Quadra comes equipped with the LaCie Shortcut Button allowing you to easily launch a variety of applications including backup applications, music, slideshows and more with the push of a button.

Improved Performance and Reliability
With a USB 3.05Gb/s interface and 4TB storage capacity, the LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk is the ideal tool for those in need of fast throughput and large storage capacity. It features 7200 rpm drives with a minimum of 32MB cache for the enhanced performance and seek times, so it can handle the most resource-intensive application. With USB 3.0 you can benefit from data speeds of up to 130MB/s.
Cross-Platform Applications
The d2 Quadra features USB 3.0, eSATA, and two FireWire 800 interfaces, and it's backward compatible with USB 2.0 and FireWire 400. It's even USB 3.0-compatible on Mac computers, thanks to LaCie's USB 3.0 driver for Mac OS. With all of its interfaces, the d2 Quadra offers universal connectivity making it easy to back up and restore any workstation, no matter the configuration and interfaces. With USB 3.0 you can make faster, more frequent backups of your data.
Functional, User-Centric Features
With the preloaded LaCie Desktop Manager, you can easily configure the shortcut button to launch the application of your choice in one push and configure your drive's eco mode. And, with its two-color LED indicator, it is easy to check the drive status. It also includes Genie Backup Assistant software and Intego Backup Assistant software with data restore for Windows and Mac.
Fanless Aluminum Heat Sink Design
The d2 Quadra's fanless aluminum heat sink design offers increased surface area, keeping it quiet, safe, and free from dust inside. It can also stand upright, be stacked horizontally with other drives, or rack-mounted to save desktop space. It's a solution for heavy storage users who want off-site backups and archives of any work environment. The integrated eco mode automatically conserves energy if the drive is inactive for a certain period of time.

I've used a lot of drives in my day, being a video editor, and although I've had at least one drive failure from many of the top companies, including Lacie, G-tech, Seagate, and more, I still trust Lacie these days because out of probably 100 lacie drives (literally) I've only had one or two fail, while the rates are much higher for the other companies. The trick is to always have at least one redundant backup on another drive.

So for the money, 4TB at $275 with usb 3.0 is pretty stunning. the drive is quiet, stays relatively cool, and the case is the sturdiest of them all.

What ever you do DO NOT buy Rosewill HDD enclosures. I had 4 out of 4 of those fail me and through several attempted communications on my part I never heard back from them once.

I find that the Lacie Porsche drives are faster, lighter and cheaper although you cannot daisy chain them as they only have one usb port.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Quadra Hard Drive with USB 3.0:

I really like the LaCie Hard drives and are perfect as backups for Macs. I have a 2TB (2yrs old) and needed additional space to backup photos. I just got 2(4TB). They are perfect for backup since they have the on-off switch at the back so you can turn them off when not in use and I'll use the 2nd one for backup. I got the USB 3.0 versus the thunderbolt even thought I'm aware that I will sacrifice speed, the old one works perfectly fine for my needs and the price difference is considerable when you get two.
I gave it a 5 starts even though one of them came defective (clicking noise) and B&H replace it with a new one. The are very well built and an excellent external drives my old one it's been 100% reliable.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Quadra Hard Drive with USB 3.0:

Have used LaCie External drives to back up my data for years now; still have my very first LaCie drive, and it still works.
As computers evolve to match larger operating system requirements in storage space, and data storage requirements for other programs also enlarge on hard drives; the size requirements of external hard drives enlarge to match, and I upgrade to larger Lacie drives.
Have had Western Digital drives Fail, have had Seagate drives fail; have never had a LaCie drive fail. LaCie drives also always seem to have faster upload/download speeds than the other drive makers offer.
Will stick with laCie drives; they work reliably.

The speed is great, the price is great. I don't have any complaints at all. I've always used LaCies or a very similar more expensive brand and personally I don't see a difference besides price. I bought my first 1tb LaCie about five years ago and it has been through an insane amount of wear and tear and it's still running and I'm still editing off of it.

I also bought a Sonnet USB 3.0 expresscard to work with my 2010 Macbook pro. Much faster for watching video or editing photos with Lightroom 5. Needed to download drivers for the Expresscard with Mavrick OS X but not a big deal. I can also chain my old 2GB Lacie drive via firewire. After moving a lot of data from my Macbook to the new drive it is noticeably faster. It was the best choice for my setup ;-)

I stored files and movies on this hard drive and was able to watch it on TV usig the PS3. The only thing, sometimes it loses connection and you cannot access your files. Maybe it is my howe Wi-Fi. Otherwise it is durable and has lots of space.

As a video editor using the LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Drive series, I have found it to be a most reliable workhorse with Final Cut Pro over the years - moving from 1TB, to 2TB, and now the 4TB external drives. These have never let me down.

As a professional photographer the need to store images short & long term is very important. The first LeCie hard drive was the 160 GB rugged design, which I've had for 10 years. I'm shooting every day and carry it with me. Since then I've bought 2 more LaCie hard drive, one is a 250 GB & a 2 TB. The 4TB was a gift to my son who is an architect. His needs to store photographic images, designs and large file of plans. Having used LaCie hard drives for a long time this was the way to go. They are very reliable and easy to work with.

Comments about LaCie 4TB d2 Quadra Hard Drive with USB 3.0:

This is the third LaCie d2 Quarda hard drive that I've added to my home system. The other two are 3 and 2 years old, respectively and have never had a problem. I keep them daisy-chained. They're used primarily for photo and movie back up. The Firewire 800 is fast enough for real time editing in iMovie. I expect that the USB3 interface will be quicker and I will be upgrading the computer soon to take advantage of that speed.
The only drawback is when transferring large amounts of data from one to the other, even though they're linked with Firewire 800, the process has to go through the computer rather than drive-to-drive. This is a big drawback if you need to transfer a large amount of data.

I read that LaCie devices are awesome, so I bought a portable disk first, and I was pleased with it, then I bought this drive to replace a disk of 4 years (Wester Digital)

Good construction, configurable for two-position placement, reliable fast USB-3 and FireWire 800; Silent running. Programmable standby modes, and software.

Do recommend; have two of them.

We bought this drive to replace a five year old 750GB d2 Quadra drive that had died on us. We use these drives for video editing and find them to be fast and reliable. The slim design makes them easy to store, and with multiple cable connector options, they can be connected to almost anything, but what I really like is the "fan less" design. With no fan, the drives are silent in operation and there is one less point of failure. The heat sink built into the case does an adequate job of keeping the drive cool, even when left powered on for long periods of time.

We have purchased more than 20 of the d2 Quadra external drives over the past 6 years and experienced about a 5% failure rate with the older 750GB drives, which is rather high. The newer, larger drives have had less than a 1% failure rate within warranty, however. When a drive does fail under warranty, LaCie is a great company to deal with. You just send them the failed drive and they either repair or replace it with no hassles.

These hard drives are great. They run quietly and keep cool. I have never lost any data (knock on wood). IF you run an older MacBook Pro laptop like me from 2011 you will have to use firewire800. the downside to this is if you are diasy chaining two or more drives there all have to use 800fw. you cant use the usb 3 between drive unless your computer has usb3. other than that great drive. need to upgrade my computer I guess.
