The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX80 Digital Camera is a compact point-and-shoot featuring a 16.2MP 1/2.3" Exmor R Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor for producing high resolution imagery with notable low-light performance. The sensor is greatly benefitted by the inclusion of the BIONZ image processor, which provides fast performance throughout the camera, including a 10fps continuous shooting rate, and impressive low-light sensitivity to an expandable ISO 12800. Full HD 1080i video recording is also supported up to 60fps in the high quality AVCHD format. These imaging capabilities are benefitted by the inclusion of an 8x optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, giving a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25-200mm. This zoom range can effectively be doubled, too, using Clear Image Zoom that employs an intelligent interpolation algorithm to increase zoom magnification with minimal image quality loss. For shooting in low-lit conditions and when working at longer zoom magnifications, Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to counter the effects of camera shake.

The WX80 also features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for transferring images and video between the camera and an Android or iOS device with the PlayMemories app. This allows you to instantly share your imagery with others on social networking or image hosting sites as well as backup to your home computer or cloud services.

For monitoring and playback of images, and for navigating the menu system, a 2.7" 230k-dot Clear Photo LCD is available and offers five brightness steps to aid in viewing in bright conditions. There are also a host of camera effects to further refine the appearance of your imagery including Superior Auto Mode, Picture Effects, Beauty Effects, Face and Blink Detection, and Intelligent Sweep Panorama.

16.2MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ Image Processor
The WX80 integrates a 16.2 megapixel 1/2.3" Exmor R Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor to produce high resolution imagery with notable low-light sensitivity. Working in connection with the sensor is a BIONZ image processor, which offers fast performance throughout the entire camera while helping to produce images with greater detail and quality. The combination of these two technologies enables an expandable sensitivity to ISO 12800, a fast continuous shooting rate of 10 full resolution frames-per-second, and full HD 1080i video at 60fps in the AVCHD format. Additionally, still images can simultaneously be taken while recording movies in order to provide multiple options as to how you depict the scene.
8x Optical Zoom Carl Zeiss Lens and Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization
A built-in 8x optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25-200mm, giving wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit most shooting situations. Five aspherical lenses are integrated into the lens' construction, helping to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range. Further extending this lens' capabilities is Clear Image Zoom, which can effectively double the optical zoom magnification with minimal image degradation. This intelligent digital zoom utilizes the BIONZ processing capabilities to comparatively asses neighboring pixels to more effectively interpolate information for creating well-detailed and more realistic-appearing imagery at greater magnifications.

Significantly benefitting this lens' long-range abilities is built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which helps to lessen the appearance of camera shake. 2-Way Active Mode functions by correcting for both vertical and horizontal motion, making it suitable for producing sharp imagery while moving.
Wi-Fi Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows you to instantly share your still images and video directly from your camera. Using the PlayMemories app, compatible with Android and iOS systems, you can share imagery between the camera and your mobile devices for uploading to social networking and image hosting sites. Additionally, you can wirelessly backup your work to a network-connected computer or share to a wireless-compatible television for viewing.
Other Camera Features
  • The 2.7" 230k-dot Clear Photo LCD monitor is a bright, clear means for composing imagery and reviewing photos and videos.
  • Enhanced Superior Auto mode will automatically determine camera settings to best expose for your subject matter, even in dark or difficult lighting situations, to provide you with clear, highly-detailed imagery.
  • Picture Effects help to add increased mood to imagery by altering their appearance to suit your creative direction. Effects include HDR Painting, Richtone Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Camera, Pop Color, Partial Color, Soft High Key, Watercolor, and Illustration.
  • Beauty Effect gives you the ability to enhance subjects' skin tones, smooth the appearance of their skin, remove blemishes and shine, whiten teeth, and more.
  • Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode allows you to create wide, up to 360°, panoramic images in-camera simply by sweeping your camera about the scene. Moving subjects and faces are also taken into account when stitching together images to produce smooth, seamless images with minimal distortion and a natural appearance.
  • Face and Blink Detection work to improve portraits by emphasizing focus and exposure on the subjects' face and help to ensure images are captured when your subjects' eyes are open.

Excellent value for a truly compact and versatile point & shoot camera. This camera was a gift for my wife who wanted a "small" and "user-friendly" camera. She approved of the Sony DSC-WX80's size and simplicity after handling it in the store and comparing it to other cameras. And, "RED" was her choice of camera color. The wi-fi feature was an added bonus feature, and it absolutely works with the iPad. Simply add the Play Memories Mobile app. The camera provides the SSID, Password and Device Name. Just remember to first go to the iPad Settings and chose the DIRECT-XXX-DSC-WX80 network setting. After turning on the camera, press Menu and go to Wi-Fi (Ctrl with Smartphone). Go to the Play Memories Mobile app and the iPad takes over the camera's controls (Mode, W/T, Self-Timer, Flash, Review Check, and shutter). The camera's display is deactivated and displays the message, "Controlling with Smartphone". Click "Exit", wi-fi is disconnected and the camera returns to normal in-camera controls. You may have to reset the iPad's network connection if it is not set to join automatically. Works like a charm.

The camera's controls are miniature, but manageable with fingertips and fingernails. As expected, the Carl Zeiss lens adds image quality to the package. The camera's size is definitely small and light-weight, perfect for pocket or purse.

The micro-USB power cord connection located behind the small power connector cover is a bit tight (and very small), so I connect it carefully. Purchasing an external battery charger as well as a spare battery would be a wise investment. A Micro to HDMI cable is also not included and suppose it's unnecessary if you use wi-fi or a memory card reader. The only missing feature is RAW, but at this price point, this camera is truly an exceptional value regardless and takes awesome pictures and videos with a host of powerful yet user-friendly features.

I bought this to replace an aging but still functional Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS. I thought the new sensor and processor would mean better image quality (especially in low light) and faster performance. I was wrong on those and all other counts.

It's slower to start up, long shutter lag, and then even longer to shut down (important as I use it while cycling). The power button is also very small and recessed and so I frequently don't hit it correctly the first time.

And photo quality? Horrible. No clarity, no detail, no punch, nothing... WAY too many megapixels... wasted on such a tiny sensor as there is just no detail there and even at the highest JPG it's really chunky and fuzzy. The flash is also useless and almost always causes overexposure (hard to believe given the tiny flash, but true). Outdoors in full sun it can be okay (but just about any camera can manage this), but indoors where such little cameras are so often used, it's very frustrating and produces a very high percentage of awful shots.

The screen is also washed out and low resolution, so all the shots look missed if you check them on the camera -- not confidence-inspiring.

The OS is also trying too hard to be dummy-friendly, with lots of options that aren't explained anywhere properly and seem to help in some situations and completely ruin shots in others, but without enough consistency to let you select the options properly ahead of time.

Definitely the last Sony camera I'll buy and will go back to the Canon lineup. Sony likes to talk specs and keywords, but this one definitely did NOT deliver when it comes time to actually capture decent shots.

Wanted a good, cheap point and shoot- this seems to do everything I need (nice quality photos, video, and excellent panaramas). Controls are easy (I like the wheel) and I like being able to adjust iso and a few things like that. Overall, good small pocket camera when I don't want to bring my slr.

I wanted something small to carry with me so I got better quality than my smart phone. Easy to use, slight manual control, such as exposer control.. But not too much. Macro is good, just focuses I don't have to set anything. The quick modes are fun to tinker with. It is no SLR, but nice print and good video. The rapid fire, surprised me, for such a little camera. The only thing I don't like, is the screen looks like I slightly over exposed the photo, but looks fine on the computer and prints ok.

Comments about Cyber-shot DSC-WX80 Digital Camera (Red):

I like Sony point and shoot cameras with CMOS sensors and Zeis lenses. The colors are nice and image quality is very good for this size sensor. I brought this for my 12 year old daughter and have similar ones for myself and another daughter that I brought last year. The reason I didn't give this a five star rating is because of the flash which casts an ugly, extremely warm cast and is very overpowering for subjects that are under 15 feet away and washes out the entire shot.

So far the only complaint i have is the playback volume is not loud enough for my old ears-- too much loud music in my younger years maybe....

I brought this camera for my daughter's birthday present. The still images ages and video are nice and sharp. At ISO 1600 the noise level is prerty good which I think is impressive for a camera in this price range.
I'm just unhappy with the flash which is too bright for portraits (only good for large area) and the color if the flash is too warm.
But otherwise it's a fantastic little camera.

Great little camera with big camera features. Bought it for trips and occasions when I don't want to carry my DSLR. Just wish it could shoot raw.

Comments about Cyber-shot DSC-WX80 Digital Camera (Black):

As an old SLR and later DSLR photographer, I was looking for a small camera with a reasonable amount of MPs. I settled for the Sony. ... It's small size make somewhat difficult to manipulate, some of the buttons are very small, especially for big fingers. Picture quality is acceptable, which one would expect with 16 MP. Media card not included as with most other cameras. All in all it does serve my purpose.

Comments about Cyber-shot DSC-WX80 Digital Camera (Red):
