The 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular from Nikon combines fully multicoated optics with a rubber armored fogproof housing to produce the image quality and handling that is characteristic of Monarch series binoculars. This iteration of the Monarch 5 features extra-low dispersion (ED) lens elements that transmit bright images with enhanced color fidelity and contrast. To preserve the image quality of these high-transmission lenses, Nikon also outfitted this Monarch 5 with phase-corrected roof prisms. Using dielectric coatings, these prisms align incoming wavelengths of light and render well-defined edges with lifelike color.

This version of the Monarch 5 all-terrain binocular boasts the same weatherproofing and functionality as its predecessor. The 8x42 configuration of the Monarch 5 has a 6.3° angle of view and can focus to within nine feet, making this set of glasses well-suited for birding, hunting, and almost any close to mid-range glassing activity. A nitrogen-filled fogproof housing provides this set of binoculars with the build quality needed to endure a long day of observation in unforgiving conditions. Non-slip rubber armoring, twist-up eyecups, and a comfortable 19mm eye relief equip the Monarch 5 binocular with the features needed for reliable and comfortable outdoor viewing.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I bought these binoculars for birding, and have been extremely pleased with them. I'm primarily a photographer (--------) and routinely carry a nice 500mm telephoto lens on the camera. These binoculars have a similar "reach" or perhaps a bit more, and have a much larger field of view and apparent light-gathering power. They are a joy to use. I wear glasses, and for me one big selling point was the generous eye relief. They work wonderfully.Side note: I bought a second pair for my wife, and that pair survived a trip down a carpeted flight of stairs with no ill effects. Whew.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

Gift for my son, avid hunter, esp. archery. These Monarchs are highly rated, lighter weight than 10 x 42, with a broader visual field as well, for his style of hunting. Arrived well packaged. Have ordered many times from here...my go- to website.

I'm a first time birder, but wanted something really good without being too expensive. It may be normal now, but I love the attached lens covers so you can't lose them. I love that you can use it with or without glasses and there is an adjustment for it. They are lightweight. Perfect for me!

I was looking for a moderately price pair of binoculars. I have had a pair of Nikon binoculars for 20 years or so but wanted to get something up to date.I wear glasses so I wanted a pair with good eye-relief. This pair is outstanding. They are very easy to set up. The focus is very easy to adjust.I am very happy with this purchase.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I previously owned Nikon Aculon 8x42, my first pair for birding. They are very good, but a bit too heavy and I thought I could look for something a little better. My selection of binoculars 1st depended on the interpupillary distance being small enough for my eyes. I thought I could do research online, but unfortunately specs don't always include this measurement and sometimes the models change (tried Eagle Optics Ranger and their older model would fit me, but the newest ones did not). Anyhow, B&H were amazing. Yossi helped me try out models in my price range. The best test was focusing across the street into some dimmer/darker windows to compare what I could see. Since I have purchased these, I have taken them birding on the cloudiest of days - great optics. I compared them to the Monarch 7 which optically is better, but a bit heavier and obviously more expensive. The focus wheel is snug, but not tight. The diopter adjustment is very tight, which is preferred but easily accessible while looking through - unlike the ones that you have to pop out. My deciding points were a) interpupillary distance was perfect for me (fit first!) b) cost c) brightness d) weight. I've used them a handful of outings so far and love them!

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I needed binoculars with a narrow interpupillary distance. Although the specification says 56 mm for the minimum IPD, it looks like the actual IPD is 55 mm which worked out great for me. These binoculars are also lighter than most 8 x 42 binoculars. The fog proof feature is also great. The one thing that I wish it had was a larger field of view, but that might be impossible to have without compromising the other great features of this binocular. I liked the neck strap that it came with and also the case; pretty decent quality for the included accessories.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I liked a lot : faithful and vivid colors, internal blackening, screw baffles to eliminate internal reflections near the prism, ED glass, coating of lenses and prism, phase correction works near perfection, stability and extension of focus (from near to more than infinity), light-weight, small, ergonomics, neoprem neck-strap, suitable price for the results .I liked : almost imperceptible curvature of field with virtually flat image, edges almost no distortion, chromatic aberration residual and astigmatism are too low, median depth of field, good internal deflector for side lights midway between the objective lens and prism, very good level of contrast, very sharp image, accurate focus, diopter adjustment, blackened inner, eyerelif, cover of objetive lenses are rubber and securely fastened by straps around the optical tube, quality of bag.Disliked : It could block a little more UV but this does not become a problem, the cover of eyepieces lenses are plastic and will need replacing before it breaks, bag could have strap buckle at the waist as to Monarch X, the eyepieces lenses came with oily residue and it was necessary to clean, could have screen baffles near the objective lens to further improve the contrast on observations at noon on sunny days. Will be used primarily for handled astronomical observation (8x 5mm exit pupil) and second binoculars for birdwatching. It is quite usable for observation of landscapes and small wildlife. I would rate 4.75 considering price and features, gained 5 stars by rounding.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

The product was purchased for observing wildlife, both at home and in the field. It has been used mostly for bird and butterfly counts in a nearby state park. It seem well built, is a reasonable weight and the non-slip surface works well. The close focus ability is what prompted to me to choose this binocular and it has worked well for observing butterflies in the field.

A clear, bright image without begin too bulky or heavy. The adjustable eyecups make it easy to use with or without glasses.

I was looking for the best optics on a budget. These
binoculars fit the bill! Everything is bright and they show colors and defintition very well. With the ED glass and muli-coatings I see many years of use.

I tried these binoculars out at Bass Pro Shop before ordering them on B&H photo. I knew I wanted them the second I picked them up, but I am not well-versed in binocular lingo, so I asked the opinions of some of my seasoned co-workers before committing to them. I was told that the Monarch 5 8x42s were the best pair of binoculars you could get in this price range, and so far I completely agree. My first adventure with the Monarchs was to search for Snowy Owls, and I was amazed at the level of detail I was able to see. I am very pleased with my choice.

These are the best binoculars I have looked through in quite a while. We purchased a pair of them so that we could take advantage of birding while in Florida. They are fairly light and super sharp

Binoculars used for birding and provides good definition, color clarity, and decent in low light. Like the light weight, clarity & sharpness of image that is needed for bird identification at a distance. No negatives so far.

We ordered these binoculars based on reviews from Cornell Labs and references in various birding magazines. Not only were we pleased with the results, but the clarity of the images and close focus capability exceeded our expectations. The binoculars are water resistant, fog proof, and rubber coated for a good grip. Another nice feature is the attached lens covers which are not a hinderence to viewing. They out perform our 4 other pairs of binocs. We would recommend them
