Questions? Ask our experts:

The 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular from Nikon combines fully multicoated optics with a rubber armored fogproof housing to produce the image quality and handling that is characteristic of Monarch series binoculars. This iteration of the Monarch 5 features extra-low dispersion (ED) lens elements that transmit bright images with enhanced color fidelity and contrast. To preserve the image quality of these high-transmission lenses, Nikon also outfitted this Monarch 5 with phase-corrected roof prisms. Using dielectric coatings, these prisms align incoming wavelengths of light and render well-defined edges with lifelike color.

This version of the Monarch 5 all-terrain binocular boasts the same weatherproofing and functionality as its predecessor. The 8x42 configuration of the Monarch 5 has a 6.3° angle of view and can focus to within nine feet, making this set of glasses well-suited for birding, hunting, and almost any close to mid-range glassing activity. A nitrogen-filled fogproof housing provides this set of binoculars with the build quality needed to endure a long day of observation in unforgiving conditions. Non-slip rubber armoring, twist-up eyecups, and a comfortable 19mm eye relief equip the Monarch 5 binocular with the features needed for reliable and comfortable outdoor viewing.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

As a beginning birder the Nikon Monarch binoculars add so much to the adventures and treks to find birds. Several other members of the group on a recent trip to Bend, Oregon had good binoculars, but my new Nikon purchase was the best view yet. Thanks B & H for also helping me find the most comfortable harness as well. The Bushnell harness is light, easy to use, and has a great design.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

For birding these have excellent light gathering ability, are easy to adjust, lightweight, have great close focus as well as distance, and easy to grip. The fact they are waterproof takes the fear of the rain ruining a good pair of binoculars away. I would highly recommend these to the birder who wants an excellent pair of binoculars at a fair price.

I got these for birdwatching and they are bright and sharp. They are very light and easy to focus and hold with one hand while holding my dog's leash in the other. The only thing I don't like is the eyepiece lens cap which are very loose, but I don't use them when I'm out hiking anyways.

I use these for wildlife viewing. I'm an avid wildlife photographer and use these binoculars to help spot birds and animals.

Nikon put the correct features together in a durable and easy to use package. The images are sharp and bright.

The only difficulty I found was that the diopter adjustment ring was very stiff. This is not much of a problem since once set, it doesn't change much. Better tight than loose.

We purchased these Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binoculars to replace an old Nikon set that we loved to use for years. These new ones are even better and outstanding for viewing in low light (at the theater or ballet) as well as outside for sports and action activities. They are very lightweight, compact and comfortable.

I like the ability to use them with my glasses on. the view is very sharp. the only downside is that the eyepiece cover will not stay on.

                Birding

                By Smit

                from Atlanta

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I use these for birding. They are about the minimum angle width for following birds in flight. They allow a decent amount of light in for overcast days. I would recommend as a high quality introduction to birding.

                Pros:
Decent amount of eye relief for wearing with Glasses. Comfortable strap. Goes from indoors to outdoors without fogging. Easy to adjust.

                Cons:
The eye cap doesn't stay on well. Eye relief does not stay extended.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I bought these binoculars for birding, and have been extremely pleased with them. I'm primarily a photographer (--------) and routinely carry a nice 500mm telephoto lens on the camera. These binoculars have a similar "reach" or perhaps a bit more, and have a much larger field of view and apparent light-gathering power. They are a joy to use. I wear glasses, and for me one big selling point was the generous eye relief. They work wonderfully.Side note: I bought a second pair for my wife, and that pair survived a trip down a carpeted flight of stairs with no ill effects. Whew.

Gift for my son, avid hunter, esp. archery. These Monarchs are highly rated, lighter weight than 10 x 42, with a broader visual field as well, for his style of hunting. Arrived well packaged. Have ordered many times from here...my go- to website.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I'm a first time birder, but wanted something really good without being too expensive. It may be normal now, but I love the attached lens covers so you can't lose them. I love that you can use it with or without glasses and there is an adjustment for it. They are lightweight. Perfect for me!

I was looking for a moderately price pair of binoculars. I have had a pair of Nikon binoculars for 20 years or so but wanted to get something up to date.I wear glasses so I wanted a pair with good eye-relief. This pair is outstanding. They are very easy to set up. The focus is very easy to adjust.I am very happy with this purchase.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I previously owned Nikon Aculon 8x42, my first pair for birding. They are very good, but a bit too heavy and I thought I could look for something a little better. My selection of binoculars 1st depended on the interpupillary distance being small enough for my eyes. I thought I could do research online, but unfortunately specs don't always include this measurement and sometimes the models change (tried Eagle Optics Ranger and their older model would fit me, but the newest ones did not). Anyhow, B&H were amazing. Yossi helped me try out models in my price range. The best test was focusing across the street into some dimmer/darker windows to compare what I could see. Since I have purchased these, I have taken them birding on the cloudiest of days - great optics. I compared them to the Monarch 7 which optically is better, but a bit heavier and obviously more expensive. The focus wheel is snug, but not tight. The diopter adjustment is very tight, which is preferred but easily accessible while looking through - unlike the ones that you have to pop out. My deciding points were a) interpupillary distance was perfect for me (fit first!) b) cost c) brightness d) weight. I've used them a handful of outings so far and love them!

Comments about Nikon 8x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I needed binoculars with a narrow interpupillary distance. Although the specification says 56 mm for the minimum IPD, it looks like the actual IPD is 55 mm which worked out great for me. These binoculars are also lighter than most 8 x 42 binoculars. The fog proof feature is also great. The one thing that I wish it had was a larger field of view, but that might be impossible to have without compromising the other great features of this binocular. I liked the neck strap that it came with and also the case; pretty decent quality for the included accessories.
