The 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular from Nikon combines fully multicoated optics with a rubber armored fogproof housing to produce the image quality and handling that is characteristic of Monarch series binoculars. This iteration of the Monarch 5 features extra-low dispersion (ED) lens elements that transmit bright images with enhanced color fidelity and contrast. To preserve the image quality of these high-transmission lenses, Nikon also outfitted this Monarch 5 with phase-corrected roof prisms. Using dielectric coatings, these prisms align incoming wavelengths of light and render well-defined edges with lifelike color.

This version of the Monarch 5 all-terrain binocular boasts the same weatherproofing and functionality as its predecessor. The 10x42 configuration of the Monarch 5 has a 5.5° angle of view and can focus to within nine feet, making this set of glasses well-suited for birding, hunting, and almost any close to mid-range glassing activity. A nitrogen-filled fogproof housing provides this set of binoculars with the build quality needed to endure a long day of observation in unforgiving conditions. Non-slip rubber armoring, twist-up eyecups, and a comfortable 18mm eye relief equip the Monarch 5 binocular with the features needed for reliable and comfortable outdoor viewing.

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I do a lot of things outdoors, hunting, watching wildlife, and birds. These are very sharp with very nice glass. I have an older pair of Nikons and they will become my wife's binoculars. This is a tremenodus buy, on great binoculars, with a great warranty.

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

My wife and I have used these binoculars ourselves and been extremely pleased with their function. We purchased 2 pairs, one for my son and one for my son-in-law, as holiday gifts. They have been tremendously happy with the gifts, already getting out and using them in a nearby wildlife area. And I cannot say enough positive things about the continued superb service from B&H.

Good for spotting shore birds. I am still getting used to using the binoculars with my glasses on but so far, so good. Lightweight and compact. This particular model was recommended by an experienced birder in our group. Am very pleased with these binoculars.

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

Wonderful binoculars. They are crystal clear, very light to carry, and easy to focus.I wear glasses and these worked perfectly. Once you have them in focus and set to your eyes they don't change. On a recent deer hunt in cloudy, low light conditions these Nikon binoculars provided excellent visibility of deer at a distance of over a hundred yards. I would highly recommend these Nikon Monarch 5 binoculars.

The optics on the Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 are clear and crisp and the focus knob is easy to use. Will adjust to fit a small face so would be a good choice for a junior. Close focus is great! I *love* the front lens covers - stout construction and fast to deploy. The carry case is nice and spacious, but I would like to see something besides a belt loop on it - put a grommet on it for a carabiner.

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

The optics are just what you would expect from Nikon, very sharp and bright. The 10x is just right for both birding and taking in distant landscape. There is problem with the caps though. The front fall easily from there closed position and the eyepiece caps are totally useless. While these are not Nikons highest end binoculars,I would think they would put more thought into properly securing both front and rear caps.

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I recently purchased Monarch 5 (10 x 42) binoculars. I chose these because my wife had purchased an older model (8 x 42) a coupla' years ago and raved about them. Although I haven't taken these in the field yet, I use them almost daily for bird and animal watching around where I live. I'm very happy with the resolution and clarity, particularly near sunrise and sunset when the light is limited. The optical quality is quite good. These are the first binoculars I've used that were comfortable and work well while wearing glasses. They are actually lighter than my wife's and fit my hands well. FYI: I contacted a B&H expert about the text describing the model I purchased (5) and the Monarch 3 and Monarch 7, all 10 x 42. It said that models 3 & 5 were good for closeup & medium distances while the 7 was good for medium & long distances. This didn't make sense to me. He said that different staff had written the reviews and 10 x 42 obviously gave the same magnification for all models. Based on his interpretation, I couldn't justify the additional cost for a model 7 although I am sure they are higher "quality." I'm a moderately serious birder.

my wife and I are avid bird watchers. the monarch 5 is good as or better than her older monarch. crystal clear viewing and no eye strain at all. the best feature is the accuracy of the focus wheel. I bought the 10 power and my wife has the 8 power. the 10 power is just as bright as the 8 power. for the price you can not beat the performance. 5 star all the way. thank you b@h for a great price too!

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

bought these as a replacement to the bushnell legend ultra HDs I purchased in September; i wear eye glasses, and when i look through my monarch 5s I get more generous eye relief and a crisper field of view than with the bushnells, definitely worth the extra money!

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

Bird Watching. I've got an older pair of Nikon roof-prism 10x42s which I got on sale for about 1/4 the price of the Monarch. The Monarch is a bit brighter and a lot lighter and more compact. Honestly, the roof-prisms are pretty good. I'm hoping that the Monarch is more durable over the long run. Time will tell.

                                birding and general nature viewing
high fidelity view with no blue fringing
focus dial has just the right amount of tension to allow for accurate focusing and locking on subject.
Light weight yet very sold feel and easy to hold steady. Great cushioned neck strap.

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I have been using my Monarch 5 10X42s for birding the last couple weeks and love them. They feel good in the hands; the grip is comfortable. The focuser moves really easily allowing you to change focus from distant to close birds without much effort. Compared to my old binoculars of a different brand they are lightweight, easier to focus, and my eyes don't get tired after a couple hours. I compared them to the others in their price-range at @ and these preformed better with less color aberration.

Comments about Nikon 10x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I tried the monarch 3 and the monarch 5, optically close but the 5 was much lighter. I didn't get a chance to try the 7 but I didn't want to spend that much so I didn't care. I tried other brands in an equal price range and other cheaper nikon models, none came close to the monarchs.
This new version has ED glass and also being a photographer using nikon lenses, ED glass makes a big difference.
The low light capabilities are fantastic. Build quality is amazing, as it should be because they come with a 25 year warrantee.

My only complaint is that the eyepiece cap is not a snug fit, it just loosely sits on there and the strap and gravity hold it in place.
