The 16x56 Monarch 5 Binocular from Nikon features a weather-sealed housing and high-transmission optics, delivering the image quality and reliability characteristic of Monarch series binoculars. This large-objective model from the Monarch 5 lineup features 56mm objectives and the same eco-friendly premium glass optics as other Monarch 5 binoculars. The lens system is made of lead and arsenic-free, extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements, which efficiently transmit light through the optical channel and maximize image brightness.

To complement the high-transmission ED lens system, Nikon equipped the 16x56 Monarch 5 with multicoated roof prisms that render a luminous view that is packed with detail and contrast across the 59.6° apparent view. Phase-corrective prism coating aligns the incoming wavelengths of light and preserves color fidelity as well as sharpness; a multi-layer dielectric mirror prism coating maximizes light reflected through the eyepieces. This range of optical technologies allows the Monarch 5 binocular to produce lifelike colors and impressive brightness—even if you are viewing during twilight hours or under heavy cloud cover.

In addition to their premium optics, the 16x56 Monarch 5 boasts the same user-friendly handling and all-terrain construction as their smaller-objective stable mates. A rubber armored body with sculpted grips gives these glasses an ergonomic feel and provides slip-resistance. The nitrogen-filled fogproof housing is built to endure long days of birding or hunting in heavy rain or extreme humidity. Other user-friendly features include a rubberized focus wheel and twist-up eyecups with multiple click-stop positions and a 16mm eye relief that permits a comfortable viewing distance even for eyeglass wearers.

The combination of a nitrogen-filled fogproof housing with ED lenses, 56mm objectives, and an included tripod mounting adapter make this configuration of the Monarch 5 a full-featured binocular for almost any long-range observation.

Comments about Nikon 16x56 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I bought these for sitting and spotting deer in dense bush over long distances instead of a spotting scope. They have performed well and above their purchase price in every aspect from construction to low light visibility, being the last couple of minutes before darkness. Best used on a tripod, though not necessary for short viewing periods, and the metal adapter is soild and steady. I had read others concerns about this adapter being hard to tighten up properly. No concerns at all if you use the correct size screwdriver and better still the binos pack away with the adapter left on in the provided case without issue. I have compared these to some current Euro made 15's and some of their preceeding models in the field. They are not as good as some of the current Euro 15x56 for light transmission or edge to edge clarity. They do give a little as a result for colour sharpness. However the new technology advantage with these Euro made offerings does not equate to the large leap in cost. These are similar to the previous models of some High end Euro Binos for quality of light transmission in the similar magnification. Most other offerings are 15x as these are a 16x. Exit pupil is slightly less giving way to the Euro models for last light performance, but only in the final minute or so. Overall, quality of build is sound and functional and above current offering in the same price field. These are not at the cutting edge of technology per some Euro models, however they are only a step and a half down at the most without the price tag. When used with a near full moon they again showed their quality. The only cons, could be longevity of clarity in the lenses in years to come, as some lesser priced models can get smokey in the glass. If these don't, they are a steal and I honestly don't expect them to as Nikon have a good reputation with their lens quality and if you resell them down the track you probably won't get much for them compared to the Euro version which historically of late hold their value extremely well in the second hand market. Depth of field is excellent with focussing a little ardous at short range as the focus wheel completes a full range with one turn and so is quick. They have withstood rain, snow and a back pack into the hills without issue. Easy on the eye, no noticable eye strain over a long viewing period. I can't comment on suitability for eyeglasses as I don't wear them. I suppose if you want the very best buy the Euro versions, but you will pay a lot more for not much more performance. I gave them a 5 star rating because honestly they are performing well above their respective price range.

Comments about Nikon 16x56 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black):

I use these for birdwatching. They are so much lighter than the Monarch 4s I used to use. They are comfortable to carry around and quick and easy to focus.

The wide lenses give great clarity in low light conditions. The 16x magnification is particularly useful for differentiating between species that are easily confused.

They may be more expensive than some other brands but this is a case of getting what you pay for.
