I bought this packaged system to add some security around my remote farm property where I have experienced some vandalism. The system is very easy to set up and use. The manual is exceptionally well written for people that have never installed a video system before. The system has it's default settings set to values that will suit 9 out of 10 users, but is able to be customized for use in any situation I can think of. The hard drive on the DVR has one TB of memory, which is large enough to record for long periods of time before you need to start overwriting what's on the hard drive.
My only negative comments about the system are that the cameras motion sensors don't seem to reach out very far, and that there are only 60 foot cables for each camera. The cameras didn't pick up motion very far out, even after enhancing the sensitivity on each cameras motion detector. After proper camera installation, I took a measuring tape and measured the distance that I could move about and the camera not pick up motion. The average was about 14.5 feet before the camera icon would light up and the recording would start. One camera would pick up out to almost 19 feet, but the other 3 cameras just weren't picking up motion very well at all. I set the cameras sensitivity levels to their highest levels and that did help add a couple of feet to the area that they would monitor, but it was still a disappointing find. I looked into buying some other cameras that were a little more responsive, and noticed that Swann has actually discontinued the model 530 camera that comes with this system.
The other negative was that most people might need to pick up a BNC extension cable if they need to run cable farther than 60 feet. That's not a big deal because there are inexpensive extensions available. But the buyer needs to be aware that it may be a possibility that extra cable may be needed.
For most people this system will work for their video surveillance needs. It's got good camera resolution and a huge hard drive. And for the price I don't think you can beat the value.

We are using this surveillance system for our home. The video quality is pretty good. The app provided on the Swann website for our Mac has a lot of bugs and crashes all the time. The network settings are difficult to figure out if you don't have a static IP, which most people don't. Once you figure it out, it works good. It's nice to be able to view the live images on your smart phone when you're away. We have the motion sensitivity turned to its lowest setting for night time and we still get countless false alarms. The night vision on one camera stopped working after 1 week, but Swann claims they will send us a new one. A bit of advice for running the wires. Tape the connections together, or the power cable will likely come un plugged. Then you'll need to unmount the camera and try to reconnect it. Happened to me on one camera and I learned my lesson for the rest. Overall, I give this an average rating because the price was right. If it were any more expensive, I would have given it a lower rating.

Comments about Swann DVR8-2900 8-Channel D1 DVR with Smartphone Viewing (1TB):

Bought this to have some coverage of my home due to a rash of recent burglaries in the neighborhood.

The video is not terribly impressive, but this was the best I could afford. No way you could read a license plate, or even get a good facial ID, unless the subject is within a few feet of the camera.

During the first setup, I connected this to my 1080 TV via an HDMI cable, and got nothing. An email to tech support was answered in a few days, which told me I needed to set the display before I could connect to a 1080 display. To do this, I needed to borrow a VGA monitor to complete the setup. Once this was accomplished, 1080 via HDMI works ok.

After install, I noticed the cameras make this really annoying clicking sound as they go from day more to night mode. During dusk, or times of the day when clouds were passing by, the light changes enough where the camera has to switch modes. The clicking during these times is non-stop and annoying as hell. As I write this, the dining room camera is clicking away like mad.

Menus and interface are clunky but manageable. In this day of Android and iOS, I'd hope for something a bit better.

Networking interface is confusing and complex as hell. I still don't have it working.

I had hoped to wait until a better quality, more intuitive system came along, but this will have to do for now.

I recently bought the Swann DVR8-2900 to monitor my home when I'm away. It arrived on time. I unpacked the box and tested the cameras immediately. They were all working perfectly. Complete installation of the cameras, wires and DVR hookup took less than three hours, and having to crawl to the farthest corners of the attic to run the wires was the most difficult part of the job. After hooking up the DVR to a TV and turning it on (at night), I was really pleased with the picture quality: Black and white with no graininess. Adjusting the camera angle to get the best viewing area was also easy to do.The only initial downside was that flying bugs easily set off the motion detection so I had read the Advanced Configuration section of the manual to figure out how to decrease the sensitivity. The instructions were straightforward and the problem was solved without difficulty.Daytime pictures in color show fairly fine detail, a great improvement over the IP camera that this system replaced. Without hesitation I would highly recommend it.

I am using the Swann 8 Channel kit with four cameras in a home application. The system gives good video quality. As others have mentioned, I believe its good quality for the money. The system documentation is very good and I did not have any difficulty installing or setting up the system. One has to be careful and use the correct Phillips screwdrivers when mounting or adjusting the cameras because the screws may strip out easily. I drilled pilot holes when mounting the cameras and I still stripped a screw or two. I have the system set up to alarm and record on motion. I have noticed that during the night the system always detects motion and records almost constantly. I have not yet determined if it has to do with the sensitivity settings or that the system naturally detects constant motion when the cameras night vision mode becomes activated. It may be the nature of the beast. I am very pleased with this product and have no regrets. The B&H sales representative was very knowledgeable and courteous. The system arrived very soon after the order was placed.

This system is pretty good for an entry-level system. The video quality is rated at 600TVL which is pretty good for seeing if there is anything going on. However, it is a little less than desireable if you're wanting a positive identification in court. The instruction manual is not well written and I had to turn to the internet for clarification on a few things. Setting up the SwannView and MyDVR for remote (not at my house) viewing required a call to technical support. I'm a 20+ year veteran of the consumer electrconics industry and I found it difficult to follow and understand the written instructions. Still it is, all-in-all a good system for the price. In 20-20 hindsight, I wish I had spent the extra money for an HD system.

This was my first experience with installing and setting up a security camera system. It is quite intuitive to set up and use. The cameras are very good for the price paid, although I wish they did have a manual switch to keep them from automatically going into IR mode. I suppose that's a pretty common feature, and so I won't dock any stars for that. The one star removed from a full 5 star rating is for the mounts on the cameras. These are clumsy and difficult to adjust. The tiny screws are easy to strip out, and the mount point of the back of the camera housing is not really adjustable. With a combination of tweaking, you can get the camera generally aimed where you want it to go, though, so it's not a deal breaker.I like that there are four additional channels available to me should I ever choose to expand the system. The 1 TB drive included is large enough to record many days before recording over previous footage. The web interface is bad, but the apps available for free download (if a little hard to find for Mac OSX), work simply and effectively.

Quality system with 4 cameras (max 8) , with the wiring for power & video going through the mounting post . The wiring through the attic was the most difficult , but completed in 12 hrs , while the 24/7 tech support from Swann is amazing. They set everything up for me by remotely logging into my computer ( with my permission )

Lived with the system for a few months. Monitor quality is good, auto motion detect is good - no real quality issues. I had a glich when setting up the system through my router so I could use my laptop and smart phone for remote monitor. It took one phone call to tech support and they had the problem solved and the system up and running. It's very handy and makes me at ease to know I can monitor the place throughout the day from anywhere. Not a better system out there for the price paid.

We have a half acre and a large barn that's my shop, I started with the DVR8 2900 and 4 cameras and it worked so well I've added two more. They are simple to hook up and work wonderful.
I would recommend this to anyone that wants a excellent camera system at a very reasonable cost.

I went to the B&H store in Manhattan to look at their different systems for retail store cameras. It quickly became apparent that the hard-wired systems gave much better picture quality over wireless - no contest. This camera system took me 2 days to install in a 19th century wood frame building. All wires concealed. It worked beautifully and was easy to program right out of the box. As soon as people coming into the store saw the monitor on with the four framed views, then the shoplifting stopped immediately.
