The E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens from Sony is a powerful, yet compact zoom lens for APS-C format E-mount mirrorless cameras from Sony. Its zoom range is equivalent to 27-300mm in the 35mm format and therefore offers everything from true wide-angle to super-telephoto capabilities. This versatility allows you to shoot groups, interiors and expansive landscapes and also zoom in for portraiture and to bring distant subjects close. A newly developed internal linear stepping motor provides quiet and smooth focusing which is ideal when shooting video. And in addition to the Power Zoom function with three variable zoom speeds, the lens supports constant speed zooming for slow, smooth zoom, which is also desirable when shooting video. Zoom can be controlled from camcorders that feature built-in zoom levers and by the standard control on the lens barrel.

Optical Image Stabilization (OSS) provides 4-stops of shake-correction which will allow you to gather more light with less blur and provide clearer images when shooting in low light or at long focal lengths. When OSS is combined with the Anti Motion Blur and Hand-held Twilight Modes of NEX-series camcorders, low light interior shots can sustain themselves with lower ISO's and minimal noise even when using ambient light. An optical design that includes 5 aspherical elements and Extra-low dispersion glass provides sharp, high-contrast images throughout the frame.

For a lens with such a wide zoom range, it is particularly compact and its metal exterior provides durability and a high-quality presence. Direct Manual Focus allows you to use the focus ring on the lens barrel for precise manual focus.

18-200mm, 11x Zoom Range
With its 18-200mm zoom range that is equivalent to a 27-300mm zoom lens in the 35mm format, this lens is supremely versatile providing wide-angle to super telephoto capabilities. It is compatible with APS-C format E-mount cameras and will fit on full frame E-mount cameras but is only fully compatible if used in crop mode.
Smooth and Quiet Autofocus and Zoom
An internal stepping motor means that autofocus and zoom functions are completed smoothly and in virtual silence, which is ideal when shooting video so that camera noise does not interfere with recorded audio.
Power Zoom with Variable and Constant Zoom Speeds
In addition to three variable speed zoom speeds, this 18-200mm lens supports constant speed zooming for slow, smooth zoom effects that can enhance cinematographic expression but are difficult to achieve manually. Power Zoom can be controlled by the built-in levers on Sony NEX-camcorders or by the built-in zoom lever on the lens.
Direct Manual Focus
Direct Manual Focus allows you to utilize manual focus at anytime. Simply turn the focus ring on the lens barrel for precise focus control.
Optical Image Stabilization
Optical SteadyShot (OSS) allows for sharp images to be shot using shutter speeds as much as 4 stops slower than would normally be possible when shooting handheld. This allows for sharper images in low light or when shooting at telephoto lengths. OSS, when combined with Anti Motion Blur and Hand-held Twilight mode, will provide clear, detailed video images even when using ambient interior lighting.
Optical Design
Five aspherical lens elements and Extra-low dispersion glass deliver sharp images with little aberration or distortion.
Circular Aperture
A 7-blade circular aperture offers naturally smooth and attractive out-of-focus areas (bokeh).
Durable Metal Exterior
The exterior of the lens barrel is made of aluminum alloy for a high-quality appearance and feel that ideally balances the lens' compact dimensions and provides the durability needed for long-term usage.

Easy to mount, quiet motor, sharp images - a quality lens, but oh so slow to zoom. What was Sony thinking? Still, overall, it's a keeper.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

I purchased this lens to extend the focal range of my Sony NEX-6 that I originally purchased with an 11-18 mm ultrawide angle lens. I tried out the lens under some of the worst conditions in an interior museum gallery with no windows and no supplemental lighting and no tripod. The lens was still able to autofocus even with an ISO setting of 12,800. The motorized zoom was virtually silent although a bit slower than I expected. My other issue with the lens was it was significantly heavier than using my Panasonic FZ150 24X Superzoom and after using the Sony lens for two hours in a "target rich" museum setting my shoulders and upper arms became quite sore.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

Use for commercials, documentary and interviews on my Sony FS-700. Sharp and great focal length range. Not very fast but great all in one. For low light situations I use an Metabones speed booster adapter with Nikon prime lens. All together a perfect kit that covers all my needs in terms of lens. Sharper and better color and geometrical corrected than expected.

I'm so sad that when I've got Sony FS-700 almost a year ago I was not able to get it with this lens, and take it with regular 18-200mm Kit Lens...
I wish only about TWICE faster speed for fast zooming mode in this lens! Current "fast zooming mode" is not fast enough...

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

I have used this lens both for still and video NEX cameras. The most recent use was for July 4th fireworks photography. This is a high resolution lens, although the Sony manual zoom lens of the same focal length appears to have at least as high a resolution, and is less expensive. The lens appears to be made solidly. However, it is heavy compared to the NEX video camera bodies. It takes some practice to learn balancing the video camera in hand, because it becomes front-heavy upon attaching the lens. Also it takes some practice to reach the wide-tele switch, which is in an unusual place compared with standard consumer camcorders. Also I found no advantage over the manual 18-200 zoom when using on NEX-7 or NEX-5 still camera bodies.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

I got the NEX-7 plus the Zeiss 24mm in Jan 2012, and have been using both a lot since [as a supplement my Canon DSLR gear]. I have been very pleased with both for both stills and video - low light performance is especially impressive. At family/sporting events, however, an NEX with a superzoom is much more practical than a DSLR and/or juggling primes, which means you will capture moments (in remarkably sharp detail) that you would otherwise miss, which is the name of the game. The smooth/slow powered zoom Sony's 18-200 PZ OSS is in fact a very significant and helpful addition to the 18-200 design if you want to shoot smooth/artistic video, as getting a uniform slow zoom by hand is otherwise somewhat difficult (if you want/need fast zoom for certain action sports, just click the PZ feature off and zoom the lens by hand). In short, an NEX + the 18-200 PZ setup works quite well for both HD video and 24MP stills (that can be blown up to 16x20 prints with compelling detail) in a very wide range of practical situations that demand smallish gear. Highly recommended.

Well over all it is good lens, but with FS100 once you pass 150mm zoom then AF can easily be fooled specially if have brighter background, so can't really rely on AF, otherwise its a good lens.

I wanted a GOOD tele zoom. I have a third party tele zoom lens that I had hoped would work well. It was a disappointment. This lens is more than I was hoping for. Great color, exceptionally sharp photos and more. On 24MP files digital zooming in Lightroom means I doubt I'll ever need a longer zoom. And it covers wide angle exceptionally well too! Other than the lens hood being a little funky (I believe its made more for movies than still shots), I have no complaints and I'm VERY HAPPY I spent a few extra bucks to get this lens!

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

After evaluating the wide to telephoto zoom lens options for my NEX 6 (and possibly a future camcorder), the Sony 18-200mm power zoom was, by far, the best choice. With a wide focal length range (made even greater [to 400mm] by using the "bi-pixel" feature of the NEX), smooth and relatively quiet power zoom for video clips, close-focus capabilities, very responsive auto focus, compact design, great ergonomics and intuitive controls that readily allow switching from auto to manual zoom and focusing, the 18-200mm lens provides an excellent and versatile optic that can generally serve as an all-purpose lens.

The image quality of the zoom is very good to excellent. There is some mild softness and some minor loss of contrast in the corners wide open. The rest of the range is quite sharp and contrasty, with excellent results for both stills and video. The power zoom feature is well worth the few extra ounces compared to other lens options and provides significantly better video results than can be had with manual movements. The included lens hood is helpful to prevent potential flare and protect the front element. Highly recommended.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

I use this lens to take action photos from a distance without affecting the flow. The quality of images is amazing with minmal or almost none aberrations on the edges.
Has a fast auto focus targeting most of the times ( compared to the Tamron equivalent which I tested for 1 month ). The zoom is smooth ( manual ) and the automatic modem helps you to do beautiful close ups on video mode. The position of the buttons and ring to control zoom and focus are placed in a way that you can find them without looking.
The down side is that it's heavy and with time you feel it. But is the trade off for having a motorized zoom. The battery life didn't get affected that much using automatic zoom all the time.
Overall I really love this lens and it's worth the price for to get beautiful photos with minimal editing!

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

I use this on my FS 700 and it is very good. It hold focus as you zoom and it looks nice. Much better than the old SEL 18200 still lens. The motor feathers at the end of a zoom nicely.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

This lens integrates perfectly with the VG900. Rocker arm zoom control works flawlessly! I have used this in a variety of scenarios from low light to action shots and the zoom and autofocus work like a charm. The only complaint I have is that the servo makes it very difficult to mount on my Merlin2 since it extends quite a bit under the lowest line of the camera.

This lens is virtually SILENT during both zoom and autofocus! With several hours of recording using both the built in mic and with a shotgun mic either top or arm mounted, I did not once pick up sound from the lens AF or zoom. That is pretty amazing.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

Currently, this is the only Sony zoom lens with an internal motor. So it is primarily for video use. I bought it for my FS100. I'm happy with the smooth, steady zooming with speed control. This feature is really the only reason I purchased it. Since it does what I bought it for and there is nothing else to compare it too, I give it 4 stars. What I'm not so happy about is the motor on the bottom of the lens. Be aware that the main photo of this lens is not showing you the bottom. The motor covers part of the focus ring. This makes it necessary to purchase a follow focus system instead of using the rubber jar opener trick for focus pulling.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

Just got got this lens a week ago and upgraded Sony's firmware to 2.0 to use the rocker handle on the FS 700. Sharp for the price. Autofocus work well, but has all the usual problems of autofocus. The design of the manual focus is not so good since it is embedded in the motor housing and my Zacuto follow focus zip gear can't be attached. We attempted to do some motion control 'vertigo' dolly zooms, but the firmware didn't include a way to program zoom points, but it works with remote so we were able to manually get some decent stuff. Firmware allows fixed or variable speeds from the rocker or remote. The zoom is a bit slow for ENG/Reality work but it would work nicely for cinematic zoom and doc work. The only other drawback is a hiccup when staring zooms from faster speeds. Used with the camera's slow motion features, some really cool shots can be achieved.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens:

I've tried almost all the superzooms but this is it - almost perfect lens for run and gun style shooting. Specially useful for travel documentary as it's not that fast aperture wise but the f6.3 aperture is still quite useful for avoiding small focusing errors or if the subject moves a bit during an interview.
It also focuses quite close even at 200mm (0.50m/1.64ft).
I use this on NEX 5n (when travelling) and on FS700 (Picture Profile nr 3 for almost noiseless ISO 3200 in low light).
Be aware that the motorized zoom isn't completely silent and on camera mic will pick it up.
One should also take a notice that a video style square lens hood is indeed included in the box albeit not mentioned in "what's in the box" description - I was a bit worried about that prior receiving the lens.
