The US-366 from Tascam is a USB 2.0 digital audio interface that can be configured as either a four input/six output, or a six input/four output device. The unit features two low noise microphone preamps with phantom power, digital I/O, a built-in digital mixer and effects, and low latency monitoring. Steinberg's Cubase LE 6 software bundle is included to facilitate out of the box use on a user's Mac or Windows based computer.

Inputs include XLR and 1/4" TRS connectors with the ability to switch Line 1 input to a Hi-Z input for direct connection of electric guitars or other electronic instruments. The converters allow for up to 24-bit/192kHz recording and the internal processing is 24-bit throughout, although internal effect use is limited to 44.1 or 48kHz sound sources.

The DSP mixer functions in two modes. The multi-track mode is ideal for music creation delivering independent monitor mixing with send-levels, as can be found on an inline-console. In addition, the mode delivers mono monitoring. The stereo-mix mode is geared towards easy and convenient podcast recording or broadcasting.

On-board DSP effects include a compressor, 3-band EQ, and reverb. Input effects can be used during recording, while the reverb can be applied to any monitoring signal at the same time. Low-latency monitoring is available from the on-board digital mixer, and volume can be monitored and adjusted easily with the oversized dedicated top panel knob.

A conveniently placed "Mixer Panel" button located on top of the unit provides a one-click recall function for the DSP-mixer. An optional footswitch allows for hands-free operation of a DAW transport control via either "Mackie Control" or "HUI" emulation. The unit is housed in a compact, aluminum desktop housing and is USB bus powered, especially useful for mobile use.

Comments about Tascam US-366- USB 2.0 Audio Interface with DSP Mixer:

I spent several weeks researching different audio interface options. I do a lot of singer/songwriter/acoustic type recording. The Tascam US-366 USB interface seemed to fit all of my needs. There is a vast amount of inputs and outputs. I was particularly surprised to see S/PDIF and Optical In and Out options - for a unit in this price point. Quite frankly, they packed an awful lot of inputs and outputs into this little box. I'm not sure I will use all of them, but it's nice to know they are there if I ever need them. The unit is well built, feels fairly solid, and the knobs and buttons have a nice touch and smooth feel to them. I didn't install drivers from the CD - I went right to the Tascam website and downloaded the latest drivers. Installation was fast and easy - no issues to report. I've installed the unit on both XP and Windows 7 32-bit machines. I tested the unit with an AKG condensor microphone (compliments of included 48V Phantom power). The result was clear audio - with plenty of overhead. Honestly, I just needed the unit to record quality audio signals that I could then import into my digital audio editing program for mixing and editing. Mission accomplished. I was also looking for something that was compact (the unit could easily fit into a backpack or laptop case) and the fact that it is USB-powered makes it a truly portable recording solution. Take along this (and a laptop) and you're good to go. The installation/activation of the included Cubase LE 6 software was somewhat of a confusing song and dance - but that's not really on Tascam more than it is on Steinberg. Either way, I can't think if anything I don't like about the US-366. I'm not sure I would use it to record an entire band - but for my stated purposes, it works great. To round out the deal - it includes a software mixer, and digital effects. I took advantage of the current rebate - and feel that I did quite well with an audio interface of this quality for just under a hundred bucks. Tascam is a brand that I know and trust. I'll echo what another reviewer said and agree that you just can't go wrong with the Tascam US-366.

Comments about Tascam US-366- USB 2.0 Audio Interface with DSP Mixer:

I purchased this unit a few weeks ago after reading rave reviews and comparing the feature set to other similar devices. I chose this one over two other offerings of similar price. Frankly, I'm sure I would have been happy with any of these.

I read a great review on another site that helped sway me onto this one. The key being the quality of the a/d converters and mic preamps. After recording some acoustic guitar with an SM57, it is clear that the unit sounds really good. I have never experienced such low noise before. It's really something. The mic pres sound really nice IMO, but then again, I don't consider myself an expert in this by any stretch ...

One thing that bothers me with this unit is that it has a little bit of a "made in China" feel to it. I don't know how so many people wrote that it was built like a tank. It has a nice smooth finish, and the aluminum knobs are beautiful, but the assembly was a little bit poor. The two first knobs catch on the face panel because the pots they are attached to are not centered in the holes. While this seems trivial, it feels like I'm really forcing them when I use them and it makes me worry about future problems with the pot always being stressed. Maybe I'll take it apart and see if I can line things up better. Besides that, the connectors all feel pretty good. The little switches feel a bit flimsy, but at some point, you have to step back and think about the price. Ten years ago, a unit like this would have cost 10 times the price. I figure, that high quality hand-built feel doesn't exist anymore, and especially not in this price range.

In my opinion, it is a great device that is very affordable, and sounds really good.

I'm pretty disappointed that I could not fix my audio latency issues with this unit, but I'm sure that has to do with me not knowing what I'm doing since I haven't heard anyone else mention or complain about this.

Comments about Tascam US-366- USB 2.0 Audio Interface with DSP Mixer:

The sound quality is great, but you need to read the manual and spend some time to configure it the way it suits your application. There is not a use case document that helps you there, you need to figure it out.
there are limitations, for example in multi-track mode you cannot record the mixed output with effects, unless you connect the output to another sound card and record using that card. In Stereo mode, you cannot output only the sound coming from the computer to the analog outs. I use the unit for skype and I did not want my mic input on the analog out which goes to speakers, but that is not possible, so be careful about the loop that it creates (set the volume properly)or use headphones. The unint also reduces the sound volume by 3dB, which can be corrected for in the mixer menu by increasing the mic and computer volumes by 3 dB.
To use the analog outputs you will need balanced (stereo) 1/4" TRS cables. The analog RCA output does not have a volume control on the unit, can use the control panel fader instead.
The dynamic effects are also limited to one input, or mixed output, or the reverb.
However the unint sound quality is great and once you get used to it, there are ways to work around the limitations. I have other Tascam devices and they are all great. The customer service is not so great though. The unit is USB powered with +48V, and digital coax and optical I/Os very handy. Easy to access the panel using the button on the unit. Great looking product.
