Product Highlights
  • Directional Video Condenser Microphone
  • Rycote Suspension System
  • Mounts to Standard Camera Shoe
  • 3.5mm Mini Plug
  • Studio-Quality Sound
  • 9V Battery Powered

The VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System from Rode is a shotgun microphone that can easily be mounted on a DSLR camera. It features a Rycote suspension system that attaches to the camera's shoe. The VideoMic is lightweight, and when mounting on a camera it does not appear in the frame. The VideoMic can also mount to Rode's boompoles for elevated audio capture. Its super-cardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides. The result is a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances.

The included Rycote Lyre is a non-elasticated suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic. It is more effective at acoustically decoupling microphones from unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than elasticated suspensions. The lyre remains effective at a wide range of temperatures and is virtually indestructible. It will never wear out, sag, snap or require any rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.

An attached, coiled cable terminates to a 1/8" (3.5mm) mini output connection. The VideoMic features a condenser element that utilizes a standard 9 Volt battery (sold separately). The microphone will run for approximately 100 hours on a single battery.

Barrel Canceling Pick Up
The Rode Video Mic functions as a true line plus gradient microphone with a super-cardioid pattern in the front and a barrel that cancels side-audio. The result is maximum pick up of the source in highly ambient and noisy environments.
Selectable 10 or 20dB Pad
When capturing audio in loud environments, the VideoMic offers built-in attenuation. The selectable 10 or 20dB pad lessens the microphone's sensitivity, allowing it to handle higher SPL levels without sacrificing clarity.
High Pass Filter Switch
A high-pass filter switch eliminates room ambiance and noise below 80Hz. This results in improved intelligibility while recording around machinery, wind or close proximities.
Internal Power
The condenser element is powered with a standard 9-volt battery for up to 100 hours (approximately).

I personally use this product for mounting on my camera's shoe mount, and a boom pole. It is so amazingly high quality, and has options for both indoor and outdoor. It is also fairly small and light, so it's easy to carry around! So far there is nothing I dislike about it.

I bought this mic thinking I was getting low quality sound with my Azden SMX-10 and heard raves about the Rode. Not having a way to test the Rode, I decided to just purchase one and give it a go.

Let me say that I'm in no manner a professional so there might be some things I'm doing wrong in using this or the SMX-10. However, I've followed all instructions I've found on using it. It just doesn't pick up sound much better than the on-board mic on the video camera ( a Panasonic HC-V750 )

I used it to record a keyboard session in conjuction with a Beachtek DXA-2T. The keyboard was plugged directly to a mixer and into the camera and the Rode Videomic was being used as the voice recorder in speaking from about 6-8 ft away. There was so much ambient noise being picked up in an otherwise pretty quiet room and the voice was echo-y and seemed 'far away'.

So at the moment, I'm unsatisfied with its performance and wouldn't recommend it to a friend but am optimistic to find I'm using it all wrong.

All those youtube people can't be lying.

      This one is good!

      By Barbette

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

This was the second Rode video mic I tried with my Canon D5. The first was the stereo mic which gave me a hiss on the audio track. I was not happy with that at $ so I tried this mic. I got nice, clear audio with no hiss. It was much more suited to my task at hand which was to record interviews. I haven't tried the boom pole yet. Most of the time I work without an assistant but I do want to try this application as well. I am quite satisfied with this video mic.

Quality is amazing as expected, both in the build and sound. I like the new shock system, works well. My only con is its large size on a small DSLR body. But for the price it is great.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I use the microphone with the Canon 70D to film inexpensive commercials and house videos for the web. It is very easy to use. It uses 9 volt batteries and does not come with one. I would suggest when going on a shoot at least have 3 extra batteries. I plug it directly into the camera to record sound and I do get a little bit of static noise. I'm trying to get a digital sound recorder to see if the static is because of the camera or the microphone. I use Adobe Audition to remove static. I would suggest getting it with the kit that includes the boom pole so you can get closer to your subject. I also got the 25 ft extension cord. I was told not to get the extension cord because the sound would not be as good but after several test I can not hear any difference.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I recently purchased this VideoMic and the Rode micro boom pole to shoot some testimonials. Beyond being lightweight and easy to use, I was loving the 80Hz setting on the mic. My testimonials were shot in a working manufacturing facility, so the hum of automated lathes and water drills would eat any voice recording alive. The 80Hz setting cut down on this background hum and delivered some pretty clear audio. The shoe mount gives you the added option for a camera mounted approach in case you decide to forgo the boom pole. I tend to shoot with a BMCC, so I kept the boom pole and picked up a 1/4" adapter so I could plug right into the camera and skip any syncing later on. Worked perfectly and kept my production moving along.

Very cool suspension system that keeps the mic steady when shoting while moving or walking.
I like the 9v battery instead of using up my 7D battery power.
I wasn't aware of the filter options, those are a definite plus.
Not crazy about the bulk. Tough to fit in a small camera bag, but now I have a reason to do some more shopping...need a new bag.

Is permentaly atached to my Canon 60D, use it everywhere for everything. It is a good quality, value for money. From time to time I might forget to turn the mic on, This is the second Rode video mic I have purchased which bears testimony of it's performance in my situation.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I like this mic a lot. But for some reason I was under the impression that it would be a compact dslr sized mic. The thing swallows my GH4 to the point I had to laugh.
To be honest I don't mind the size anymore. It never gets in my shots and it really makes my camera look like I have a really expensive pro set up. I know that shouldn't be a reason to buy anything, but working with clients... its nice that they feel they are really paying for something.
As far as sound... This is the best mic I own. When I took it out of the box and hooked it up, I threw on some headphones and was amazed that I could hear everything everyone was saying in the office. Very interesting.
As far as the build goes, to me it is very solid. I do not know why others said cheap, flimsy.
The 9v battery is a weird choice.. but maybe it'll last longer than AA? I would give it 5 stars if I could plug an XLR in and use it on a pole.
                          I don't regret this purchase.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

This is a great mic that can easily plug into a DSLR or other camera. I also purchased the Rode XLR adapter which allows me to use it with my DR-40 or any other standard audio input.

The audio quality is very good. The high pass/power switch is easy to use.

My only real complaint with this mic is that you must remove the battery cover and battery to switch patterns.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I purchased this in a bundle (Rode Mini boom pole and male to female extension) for a great price compared to what I would have paid for all of them separately. I got the mic just in time to start filming a web series that just hit principal photography and the quality that I received was phenomenal for the conditions we were filming in. (highway noise) I would definitely recommend this to a friend.
