Product Highlights
  • Directional Video Condenser Microphone
  • Rycote Suspension System
  • Mounts to Standard Camera Shoe
  • 3.5mm Mini Plug
  • Studio-Quality Sound
  • 9V Battery Powered

The VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System from Rode is a shotgun microphone that can easily be mounted on a DSLR camera. It features a Rycote suspension system that attaches to the camera's shoe. The VideoMic is lightweight, and when mounting on a camera it does not appear in the frame. The VideoMic can also mount to Rode's boompoles for elevated audio capture. Its super-cardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides. The result is a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances.

The included Rycote Lyre is a non-elasticated suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic. It is more effective at acoustically decoupling microphones from unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than elasticated suspensions. The lyre remains effective at a wide range of temperatures and is virtually indestructible. It will never wear out, sag, snap or require any rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.

An attached, coiled cable terminates to a 1/8" (3.5mm) mini output connection. The VideoMic features a condenser element that utilizes a standard 9 Volt battery (sold separately). The microphone will run for approximately 100 hours on a single battery.

Barrel Canceling Pick Up
The Rode Video Mic functions as a true line plus gradient microphone with a super-cardioid pattern in the front and a barrel that cancels side-audio. The result is maximum pick up of the source in highly ambient and noisy environments.
Selectable 10 or 20dB Pad
When capturing audio in loud environments, the VideoMic offers built-in attenuation. The selectable 10 or 20dB pad lessens the microphone's sensitivity, allowing it to handle higher SPL levels without sacrificing clarity.
High Pass Filter Switch
A high-pass filter switch eliminates room ambiance and noise below 80Hz. This results in improved intelligibility while recording around machinery, wind or close proximities.
Internal Power
The condenser element is powered with a standard 9-volt battery for up to 100 hours (approximately).

For a quick interview and a small budget this mic is a great backup boom for the price. Of course there are better mic's out there. This one feels cheap (plastic) but what can you expect for $[$]. It's extremely sensitive to direction and distance so it's best for close interviews. Impressed with the sound quality. Not impressed with the 8th inch connector. I'd rather the cable be independent from the unit. I've been having some issues with connection to my Canon 5D Mark ii. I'm not sure if it's the connection or the unit itself but I'll get levels but two minutes later all I hear is static on my clips. If the chord was independent I could test other ones to at least find out myself if it's a bad chord or if I need to send the mic in.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I use the microphone with the Canon 70D to film inexpensive commercials and house videos for the web. It is very easy to use. It uses 9 volt batteries and does not come with one. I would suggest when going on a shoot at least have 3 extra batteries. I plug it directly into the camera to record sound and I do get a little bit of static noise. I'm trying to get a digital sound recorder to see if the static is because of the camera or the microphone. I use Adobe Audition to remove static. I would suggest getting it with the kit that includes the boom pole so you can get closer to your subject. I also got the 25 ft extension cord. I was told not to get the extension cord because the sound would not be as good but after several test I can not hear any difference.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I recently purchased this VideoMic and the Rode micro boom pole to shoot some testimonials. Beyond being lightweight and easy to use, I was loving the 80Hz setting on the mic. My testimonials were shot in a working manufacturing facility, so the hum of automated lathes and water drills would eat any voice recording alive. The 80Hz setting cut down on this background hum and delivered some pretty clear audio. The shoe mount gives you the added option for a camera mounted approach in case you decide to forgo the boom pole. I tend to shoot with a BMCC, so I kept the boom pole and picked up a 1/4" adapter so I could plug right into the camera and skip any syncing later on. Worked perfectly and kept my production moving along.

Very cool suspension system that keeps the mic steady when shoting while moving or walking.
I like the 9v battery instead of using up my 7D battery power.
I wasn't aware of the filter options, those are a definite plus.
Not crazy about the bulk. Tough to fit in a small camera bag, but now I have a reason to do some more shopping...need a new bag.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I like this mic a lot. But for some reason I was under the impression that it would be a compact dslr sized mic. The thing swallows my GH4 to the point I had to laugh.
To be honest I don't mind the size anymore. It never gets in my shots and it really makes my camera look like I have a really expensive pro set up. I know that shouldn't be a reason to buy anything, but working with clients... its nice that they feel they are really paying for something.
As far as sound... This is the best mic I own. When I took it out of the box and hooked it up, I threw on some headphones and was amazed that I could hear everything everyone was saying in the office. Very interesting.
As far as the build goes, to me it is very solid. I do not know why others said cheap, flimsy.
The 9v battery is a weird choice.. but maybe it'll last longer than AA? I would give it 5 stars if I could plug an XLR in and use it on a pole.
                    I don't regret this purchase.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

This is a great mic that can easily plug into a DSLR or other camera. I also purchased the Rode XLR adapter which allows me to use it with my DR-40 or any other standard audio input.

The audio quality is very good. The high pass/power switch is easy to use.

My only real complaint with this mic is that you must remove the battery cover and battery to switch patterns.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I purchased this in a bundle (Rode Mini boom pole and male to female extension) for a great price compared to what I would have paid for all of them separately. I got the mic just in time to start filming a web series that just hit principal photography and the quality that I received was phenomenal for the conditions we were filming in. (highway noise) I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

The crew and myself started film making proyects again, but now we started to adquire equipment. This is the first shootgun mic that we purchase. I give it a try in the interviews we did for information in the new proyect we have for our university film festival. The sound is amazing in both exterior and interiors. We used with a D5100 making it a great DSLR with a good sound recording. We're going to start producing this week. I'm very excited...

I use this mic for DSLR video. It works great plugged directly into the camera, or into a JuicedLink preAmp, then into the camera. This design is far superior to their pervious device with the rubber bands. Delivers clean audio.

I used this on the Canon 3Ti and what a difference. I did the same video of Safety Talk Contest the year prior in the same Conference room with the same audio set up. Even had some of the same people competing this year. Well we played back the year before to see the difference with this years.
Well the difference was night and day. Much better sound quality. I could hear every word from 50 feet away. Last year with just the camera we could not hear when someone was talking or making noise anywhere else in the room when played back.
All back ground noise was gone except a little coughing in front of the camera. All the other noises are there but you do not notice them.
I have tried no others so I can't compare but I am VERY happy with this Mic so far.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

As a beginning DSLR filmmaker myself, I knew I must have the Rode Videomic. After extensive research, and confirming that it was the best and simplest microphone for my budget and knowledge, I purchased one.

Upon delivery I was excited to find everything nicely packaged and clean, and slightly larger than I expected. However, it does not interfere with the image on the camera.

I attached it to the hotshoe adapter I had to put on my camera (as my camera does not have a standard hotshoe) and was extremely glad, suprised and relieved to see how easy it was to attach and simply switch on.

The sound quality is superb for its price, and picks up the subject clearly with little extraneous noises caused by one's surroundings. The free deadcat provided by BH and manufactured by Rode is of course, quite a lovely and quality surprise as well.

One thing that perturbed me slightly though is the location of the pad-sound-thingy-mc'clicky. To change the db from 0 db to the other settings of -10db or -20db, you must remove the battery and use a tiny, pointy object to flick a little switch. I think that could have been thought out a little better.

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase, and satisfied with its professional sound from a basic microphone that any beginner or advanced videographer can use.

I have the older version of this microphone with the rubber band shock mounts, the bands dry up and rot out after about a week. This new mount is awesome! I have always loved the microphone for the price.

For the price of this product you can't beat the quality, strong construction and great audio quality. It isn't perfect for all situations but it is an all around great upgrade to your equipment.
