  • 9V Battery Powered

The VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System from Rode is a shotgun microphone that can easily be mounted on a DSLR camera. It features a Rycote suspension system that attaches to the camera's shoe. The VideoMic is lightweight, and when mounting on a camera it does not appear in the frame. The VideoMic can also mount to Rode's boompoles for elevated audio capture. Its super-cardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides. The result is a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances.

The included Rycote Lyre is a non-elasticated suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic. It is more effective at acoustically decoupling microphones from unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than elasticated suspensions. The lyre remains effective at a wide range of temperatures and is virtually indestructible. It will never wear out, sag, snap or require any rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.

An attached, coiled cable terminates to a 1/8" (3.5mm) mini output connection. The VideoMic features a condenser element that utilizes a standard 9 Volt battery (sold separately). The microphone will run for approximately 100 hours on a single battery.

Barrel Canceling Pick Up
The Rode Video Mic functions as a true line plus gradient microphone with a super-cardioid pattern in the front and a barrel that cancels side-audio. The result is maximum pick up of the source in highly ambient and noisy environments.
Selectable 10 or 20dB Pad
When capturing audio in loud environments, the VideoMic offers built-in attenuation. The selectable 10 or 20dB pad lessens the microphone's sensitivity, allowing it to handle higher SPL levels without sacrificing clarity.
High Pass Filter Switch
A high-pass filter switch eliminates room ambiance and noise below 80Hz. This results in improved intelligibility while recording around machinery, wind or close proximities.
Internal Power
The condenser element is powered with a standard 9-volt battery for up to 100 hours (approximately).

I personally use this product for mounting on my camera's shoe mount, and a boom pole. It is so amazingly high quality, and has options for both indoor and outdoor. It is also fairly small and light, so it's easy to carry around! So far there is nothing I dislike about it.

For a quick interview and a small budget this mic is a great backup boom for the price. Of course there are better mic's out there. This one feels cheap (plastic) but what can you expect for $[$]. It's extremely sensitive to direction and distance so it's best for close interviews. Impressed with the sound quality. Not impressed with the 8th inch connector. I'd rather the cable be independent from the unit. I've been having some issues with connection to my Canon 5D Mark ii. I'm not sure if it's the connection or the unit itself but I'll get levels but two minutes later all I hear is static on my clips. If the chord was independent I could test other ones to at least find out myself if it's a bad chord or if I need to send the mic in.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

This mic is nice. Tested it with a Canon 60D camera and liked the sound, compared the actual camera microphone with this one plugged in and you really notice the difference.
The only thing is that you'll need a 9V battery which is not as commercial as AA or AAA, and, of course, not included.
Other than this I really like it!

          Good Entry Level Mic

          By James Hewitt

          from Doylestown, PA

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I purchased the VideoMic and the VideoMic Pro. The standard VideoMic sounds great but if you have the money go with the Pro version it is miles ahead. I don't want to turn you away from this, because this has almost the same sound; Its just that the VideoMic Pro has that +20db Switch which helps improve the signal to noise. Exellent product from Røde.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I bought this mic as an entry level product to start getting better audio quality. It is very simple to operate and goes right on the shoe mount. Two things that I found that were annoying were 1) the red cradle/shock mount sags under the weight of the mic so the dead cat actually shows up in the field of view with my 24-105 lens. I have to jam something between the lens and mic to elevate it out of the way. 2) it has a hissing sound on all my video. It doesn't matter if I have the 80Hz filter selected or not. But for the money this is a good value to get things started. The quality of the mic itself is good overall.

Does a good job taking the audio up a notch on a DSLR. The only thing I wish it came with would be a good protective case. I keep it in the original packaging when transporting which is a bit cumbersome.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

As a substitute for the in-camera mic on the current crop of DSLRs, the Rode VideoMic does a superb job of capturing sound at a very attractive price. The Lyre suspension isolates the mic from the camera body, and helps eliminate sound of the IS in the lens, and other close camera handling issues in a run and gun situation.

I haven´t used for a long period of time yet, but I can say It´s a very nice product. Very easy to use (I have a Canon 60D). The sound it incredible if you compare to the camera´s internal mics. I purchased it because I needed fast for a wedding, if you are seriously interested in sound, buy a real shotgun mic for a few dollars more, like the Azden around $, it sound better and you can use it in more different situations. The Rode it´s a great mic for on camera and if you don´t want something to put on the camera and go shooting, it´s not a real shotgun mic. Also, it´s has a cheap construction.

I use this with my dslr for short films and other nature type videos. The mic itself is great, the only thing that holds it back is my cameras preamps. Nothing an external recorder can't fix. But for the price it is in my opinion almost an unbeatable solution for greater sounding audio.

I use the Rode video mic with my Canon 70D camera, and the audio quality changed for the good dramatically. It's very portable. It also has a feature to lower the decibles, although it's really small, but that doesn't matter. It's a great product at a great price.

Comments about Rode VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System:

I bought this mic thinking I was getting low quality sound with my Azden SMX-10 and heard raves about the Rode. Not having a way to test the Rode, I decided to just purchase one and give it a go.

Let me say that I'm in no manner a professional so there might be some things I'm doing wrong in using this or the SMX-10. However, I've followed all instructions I've found on using it. It just doesn't pick up sound much better than the on-board mic on the video camera ( a Panasonic HC-V750 )

I used it to record a keyboard session in conjuction with a Beachtek DXA-2T. The keyboard was plugged directly to a mixer and into the camera and the Rode Videomic was being used as the voice recorder in speaking from about 6-8 ft away. There was so much ambient noise being picked up in an otherwise pretty quiet room and the voice was echo-y and seemed 'far away'.

So at the moment, I'm unsatisfied with its performance and wouldn't recommend it to a friend but am optimistic to find I'm using it all wrong.

All those youtube people can't be lying.

Phenomenal sound quality in a variety of situations. Particularly excellent at capturing sound when the camera is bouncing or moving around. Highly recommend for video production.

We use this for broadcast classes when recording large and outdoor events. Picks up from a good distance, it's easy to use, and gets the job done for what we need.

This was the second Rode video mic I tried with my Canon D5. The first was the stereo mic which gave me a hiss on the audio track. I was not happy with that at $ so I tried this mic. I got nice, clear audio with no hiss. It was much more suited to my task at hand which was to record interviews. I haven't tried the boom pole yet. Most of the time I work without an assistant but I do want to try this application as well. I am quite satisfied with this video mic.
