The Handheld Digital Microscope Pro from Celestron is a cost-effective digital microscope designed for students and hobbyists. This USB-powered microscope has a built-in CMOS camera sensor capable of capturing still photos and videos with 5 megapixel resolution. The portable computer-powered design makes this unit at home anywhere a laptop can go. Celestron's Mac/Windows-compatible Micro Capture Pro software allows users to analyze, annotate, manipulate, and save the transmitted images from the digital microscope. An included USB cable also allows real-time images to be displayed on a TV or projected in a classroom.

The Handheld Digital Microscope Pro includes a height-adjustable stand that adds functionality by accommodating tall specimens. A 20-200x magnification zoom range is suited for almost any specimen, including slides and three-dimensional objects. LED illuminators near the microscope objective provide incident lighting that is dimmable using a switch integrated with the USB cable. The built-in 5MP camera, height-adjustable stand, video output cable, and feature-rich software make the Handheld Digital Microscope Pro a well-equipped entry-level instrument for the field, classroom, or home.

The microscope does what is supposed to be doing. It is not too high magnification (don't expect to see individual cells), but it is not low either (40-200x - I could take it up to 120x calibrated and with a good result on the photo). Photos at 5MP have quite large pixels, but 1,3-3MP are very good in quality and very usable. I liked the fact that it automatically polarizes according to the light available and this also prevents too high reflections. I've tested it on several types of materials and I've found that it is not capable of focusing on totally reflective surfaces (e.g. glass, mirror, shiny metals). Other than that I'm very pleased with it and it will be a wonderful complement for my research. I'm an archaeologist working on prehistoric pottery and this microscope will significantly aid the construction of a more precise typology of the pottery analyzed. The software that comes with it is easy to use and easy to learn, but could have been a bit more intuitive (especially in the way photos get to be calibrated - you need to read the manual to understand what to do, but it's easy). Also you won't be able to use it without the stand or any other holding device, in other words it needs to be absolutely still in order to get good results. Finally I liked that there is no button to capture photos on the device, but instead is part of the software, as this prevents shakiness in the photo or video.

Comments about Celestron Handheld Digital Microscope Pro:

I am a behavioral neurobiologist working on Drosophila (fruit fly) feeding behavior. I wanted to document the appearance and behavior of the flies, but we didn't have a camera on our dissecting microscope. The optics of this microscope are incredible. The field of view and depth of field are not limiting at all. In some ways it is completely comparable to our scope that costs 3 or 4 times the price. The camera is excellent, adjusting to a very wide range of light intensities. The software is simple but has useful functions, and it is intuitive. One drawback is that the stand is a little bit flimsy. The scope can be taken off the stand, however, and held in place by other means. The focus wheel is a little inconvenient when taking a video, since rotating it shakes the scope. In my specific unit, one side of the field of view is not quite in focus when the other side is, but I assume when I bring it back to exchange it, that will not be a problem.Overall, I could not be more satisfied with this purchase. When I showed the images and movies to the head of the lab, he said we should buy more of them.

Comments about Celestron Handheld Digital Microscope Pro:
