The 8x42 Terra ED Binocular from Zeiss combines SCHOTT ED glass elements and a compact weather-sealed housing to create a multi-purpose optic that delivers the image quality and streamlined silhouette worthy of the Carl Zeiss name. The Terra ED is the third binocular line in Zeiss' Sporting Optics catalogue, accompanying their popular Conquest and legendary Victory binoculars under the big top. Zeiss engineers designed the Terra ED for birders and hunters seeking a budget-friendly set of glasses that do not sacrifice twilight performance or functionality.

At the core of Terra ED series optics are fully multicoated SCHOTT ED glass lenses designed to maximize light transmission and render contrast-rich images. Thanks to a space-saving Schmidt-Pechan roof prism design and lightweight composite housing, this binocular weighs less than 2 lbs. Complementing the high-transmission optical path and modest form factor, the Terra ED has a nitrogen-filled housing that provides fogproof performance and submersion tightness to a depth of approximately 3 ft, preparing these binoculars for almost any outdoor observation.

This configuration of the Terra ED binocular features 8x magnification and an immersive 56° apparent viewing angle. These features, in addition to the 18mm eye relief, equip the 8x42 optic for comfortable glassing. These glasses also boast the ability to focus down to less than 6 ft, allowing observers to get up close to the bird or other nearby subject of interest. A textured center focus wheel and twist-up rubber eyecups supply additional handling features that enhance the overall ergonomics of the Terra ED and help make it a full-featured binocular for close to mid-range glassing tasks.

The focus wheel takes some getting used to but overall very nice pair and they figured out a way to keep all the lens caps attached to the bino's......something Swarovski hasn't figured out.

Buying the Terra EDs all comes down to how you plan to use these binoculars...and if you have done due diligence to review the alternatives. It is a good idea to actually hold, adjust and test drive any pair of binoculars that you plan on buying for a specific purpose. I chose these for birding. While they are compact, they are also heavy. Ponderous. The housing is blocky, and never felt balanced in my hands. The Terras seem heavier than they are because the weight is distributed over a small area. They seem heavier than billed...a better balanced binocular like the NIKON Monarch 7 7x42 feels lighter than billed. I found the diopter adjustment on the Terras to be excessively stiff, and the back and forth to achieve proper focus was not rewarded by my high expectations for the Zeiss brand. In fact, I felt the optics on the Vanguard Endeavor 7x42s were equal to or possibly better than the Zeiss. Lesson learned...if you want small and light, do not try to cram a pound and a half of optics into a one pound bag. I was so impressed by the Monarch 7s, that I opted to purchase a pair of 8x30s. After using the Monarch 8x30s in the field, for me, they are the best $ binoculars on the planet that only cost $. They adjust in a snap, intuitively. And they weigh only 15 ounces.FYI-B&H stands behind what they sell...you cannot beat their service or prices.

Comments about Zeiss 8x42 Terra ED Binocular:

I bought these for birding, astronomy, traveling and general terrestrial use. I am very impressed with their quality. Apart from these my other good pair is the Canon 18x50 IS and the Zeiss is better but they aren't directly comparable because they are very different. I haven't used other premium models but there is the Cornell review that puts them as a best buy in it,s category with the Nikons 5 Monarch and other bionoculars that are slightly better (less than 10%) cost 2-5x more. Those that want that 10% may buy the Conquest or Victory or other premium they want but the Terras will be all one needs if he isn't that picky.I will not say anything else about the pros, they are too many to list. Just the cons, having in mind that they would add to the price if they would upgrade them and then I wouldn't have bought them.I would like wider eyepieces, 60+ degrees. A black color option (mine is the blue). A price included case. Not to see spikes from the roof prisms (but they aren't much annoying). Space around the tubes to put my fingers (but that requires longer tubes or open hinge). That's it. Everything else is perfect for my needs.

Comments about Zeiss 8x42 Terra ED Binocular:

Use these for viewing enjoyment. Simple as that - once a week walk/birding and the grab a look set for most other viewing opportunities... Have had a long time set of Binos made by Pentax - that was my first intro to what it is like to see objects with a decent light gathering optic... These Zeiss Binos bring "buckets" of light to you and the "eye relief" from the viewing lens is outstanding... Something not discussed much with Binos but should be... They are well thought out, rugged, image is near faultless, light gathering is on par with other Binos costing up in the range of $... !!! I have used a few others that are a bit lighter - and that is ONLY reason I did not give a Five Star Rating.... but, I have to admit, those other- lighter units- cost about twice as much as these.... You have to ask yourself - for this price - what else even comes close to SCHOTT ED glass, compact weather sealed and image quality that can run up against the $ optics out there...

Comments about Zeiss 8x42 Terra ED Binocular:

After 25 years of using an older set of binoculars I found it time to research a new pair. Between a few websites the Zeiss Terra ED received consistent high marks. They are a fantastic step up for bird watching and can easily be used without any eye strain. They feel great in the hands and very comfortable if wearing eyeglasses. They were also very affordable and made even more affordable with the Zeiss promo rebate of[$] AND a free Barska Fitness Watch and heart rate monitor offered by B&H. Very pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend them along with the B&H web store.

Love these! Perfect for birding - quality glass and works well for those with or without glasses. One thing that I wish was changed - the optics covers are cheap and don't fit well. Will be looking for something else to keep the optics covered while not in use.

This binocular is a very good deal. I was impressed with the price considering the great quality of the brand Zeiss. I study songbirds and I have used Nikon, Burris and Bushnell before, but Zeiss so far is the winner: Lenses are super clear and image is bright. Rapid focus but not extremely sensitive. Average weight for this type of binocular. The only minor flaw so far is that even though I can see birds at two meters from my feet, the image splits in two circles at that minimum distance. This is the main reason to give one star less than perfect.
