The 10x42 Terra ED Binocular from Zeiss combines SCHOTT ED glass elements and a compact weather-sealed housing to create a multi-purpose optic that delivers the image quality and streamlined silhouette worthy of the Carl Zeiss name. The Terra ED is the third binocular line in Zeiss' Sporting Optics catalogue, accompanying their popular Conquest and legendary Victory binoculars under the big top. Zeiss engineers designed the Terra ED for birders and hunters seeking a budget-friendly set of glasses that do not sacrifice twilight performance or functionality.

At the core of Terra ED series optics are fully multicoated SCHOTT ED glass lenses designed to maximize light transmission and render contrast-rich images. Thanks to a space-saving Schmidt-Pechan roof prism design and lightweight composite housing, this binocular weighs less than 2 lbs. Complementing the high-transmission optical path and modest form factor, the Terra ED has a nitrogen-filled housing that provides fogproof performance and submersion tightness to a depth of approximately 3 ft, preparing these binoculars for almost any outdoor observation.

This configuration of the Terra ED binocular features 10x magnification and an immersive 60° apparent viewing angle. These features, in addition to the 14mm eye relief, equip the 10x42 optic for comfortable glassing. These glasses also boast the ability to focus down to less than 6 ft, allowing observers to get up close to the bird or other nearby subject of interest. A textured center focus wheel and twist-up rubber eyecups supply additional handling features that enhance the overall ergonomics of the Terra ED and help make it a full-featured binocular for close to mid-range glassing tasks.

Comments about Zeiss 10x42 Terra ED Binocular:

The Terra ED binoculars are a very good investment for someone wanting higher optical quality but at a fair price. The outer shell (sort of a rubber armor) resists perspiration unlike other brands. The optical quality is one step from being truly great. The compact and lightweight unit is constructed well. Optical image quality is very crisp and clear. The sharpness drops off a hair on the extreme outer edge but this isn't a problem as 99.8% of us will just move our head and keep our eyes fixed in the optical sweet spot. Color rendition and saturation are spot on. A couple of nit-picks: The focus knob is very loose compared to other brands. It's not a defect, but it just takes time to get used to it. The ribbing on the knob also is a strange. The spacing of the ribs is wider than I would prefer and thus my finger has to choose to either sit on the rib or sit in-between the rib when focusing. And since you do a lot of [fast] focusing, you want a firm, consistent finger placement. The eye-cups require above-average pressure to twist out. In theory, if you always keep them out, then this won't be an issue. If you use them with sunglasses, then it will seem stiff but this will likely get better over time. The included felt bag was disappointing. I prefer a quality protective case.

As birder I need a good binocular but don't want to spend a fortune. This pair is perfect for my needs. It is very bright and can focus quickly. The range of field is good and it can focus closer than most. I had a pair of Nikon Monarch glasses for years and while they were more than satisfactory these Zeiss are better. If I encounter any problems I hope their customer service is as good as Nikon.
